One of the most storied rivalries in college sports, the winner of Saturday s Star Game not only gains bragging rights, but each member of that team receives a star for their letter sweater signifying a victory over their archrival. Additionally, a Navy win would secure at minimum a share of the Patriot League regular-season title and an opening-round bye as the No. 1 or 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament (April 24 / 27 / 29). u PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT: With just two weeks left in the Patriot League regular season, four teams - Navy (6-1), Bucknell (5-1), Loyola (5-1) and Lehigh (5-2) - have qualified for the six-team Patriot League Tournament set to begin on Tuesday, April 24 with two quarterfinal games involving the #3 through #6 teams. Colgate (2-4), Boston University (2-4), Army (2-4) and Holy Cross (1-5) are fighting for the final two spots. Just 32 players have recorded 100 points in Navy s 111-year history with the last coming in 2016 when Patrick Keena closed out his career with 108 points. Ray enters the weekend with 94 points, while Torain has amassed 88. Ray also need just 1 goal to join the Mids all-time top- 20 goal-scorers list. ARMY NAVY 10, #8 ARMY 6 APRIL 15, 2017 ANNAPOLIS, MD. Score By Quarters F Army (10-2, 6-1 PL) Navy (6-7, 4-4 PL) Navy went on a 7-0 run over the final 16 minutes of the game to overcome a three-goal deficit and defeat #8 Army West Point The Mids also clinched the Army- Navy Star Series presented by USAA for the 19th time in the last 21 years. Navy jumped out to a 2-0 lead as attackman Dave Little utilized to a Ryan Wade pass to ripple the back of the net and put the Mids on the scoreboard. Midfielder Greyson Torain tacked on an unassisted goal. The Mids held the Black Knights off the scoreboard until the eight-minute mark in the second quarter, when Nate Jones sent his shot past Navy keeper Ryan Kern. On the ensuing faceoff, Army defensive middie Anthony George picked up the ground ball and passed back to faceoff specialist Dan Grabher who knotted the game. Navy took a 3-2 lead four minutes later when attackman Chris Hill wrapped around the cage and scored his first career goal against the Black Knight. Army answered 43 seconds later when Conor Glancy picked up the ground ball and fed middie Ted Glesener for a 15-yard goal straight up the middle. The Mids looked to get the final shot of the half following an Army turnover, but Navy failed to convert after an errant pass on its offensive end of the field. Army quickly got the ball to mid-field where David Symmes threaded his pass to Jones who was being smothered by Navy defenseman Michael Strack at the crease and Jones batted it in for the go-ahead goal with just 1.9 seconds left. Army scored back-to-back goals to open play in the third quarter, unassisted strikes by Symmes and All-Patriot League attackman Cole Johnson, to give the Black Knights a 6-3 advantage with 3:32 to play in the game. The Johnson goal, however, would be Army s final goal of the game, as the Mids defense clamped down and held the Black Knights without a goal for the final 18:32. Navy s offense began to whittle away at Army s lead, scoring a pair of goals in 10 seconds. The Mids tied the game less than a minute into the final stanza when Ray was left uncovered at the crease and Little found him for the door-step goal. Nearly six minutes later (8:20), Kern made one of his 10 fourth-quarter saves that sparked a transition goal that saw senior defenseman Chris Fennell feed Little for the game-winner. After opening the season 3-0, including a 9-7 win over nationally-ranked Rutgers, the Black Knights have lost five of their last seven. Their two wins during that stretch were against Lafayette and Holy Cross. Army heads into the weekend having lost three in a row by a total of six goals vs. Colgate, 10-7 vs. Bucknell and 8-7 vs. Boston University. Army s defense has been stout, holding its opponents to just 7.10 goals per game which is #2 nationally. NAVY - THE SERIES Saturday s contest marks the 99th contest between Army and Navy on the lacrosse field, meeting for the 86th consecutive year. It s the longest continuous lacrosse series between Navy and another team. Navy owns a series advantage and has won 17 of the last 26 contests in the series. The Mids also own a advantage in Star Games, winning 14 of the last 20 including each of the last three. Should Navy defeat Army on Saturday, it would be the first class to go 4-0 in Star Games against the Black Knights since the Class of 2007 accomplished it. The Mids lead the series in West Point, , however the Black Knights have won four of the last five games played at Michie Stadium. Navy won the last meeting in West Point, 11-10, on an overtime goal by current senior Casey Rees. Army and Navy have met twice in a season on seven previous occasions. In 1978 and 81, the two also met in the NCAA Tournament. The two have met in the Patriot League Tournament in 2005, 06, 07, 10, 15 and 16. Navy has scored eight or more goals in 24 of the last 31 contests against Army. However, the Mids have scored double figures just four times in the last 13 games of the series. 6 MEET OUR NATION S FUTURE LEADERS Navy s Class of 2018 has put together a record over four seasons, including an 23-8 record in Patriot League action. The Mids were crowned 2016 Patriot League Regular-Season Champions and earned the program s first NCAA Tournament berth since 2009 when they received an at-large bid in 16. A win by the Mids on Saturday would secure at minimum a share of the Patriot League regular-season title and an opening-round bye as the No. 1 or 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament (April 24 / 27 / 29). Additionally, the Class of 2018 would be the first class to post a 4-0 mark in Star Games since the Class of Navy s seniors will graduate on May 25 and be commissioned either 2nd Lieutenants in the Marine Corps or Ensigns in the Navy. Graduates serve a minimum of five years in the Navy or Marine Corps, while pilots serve eight years upon earning their wings. Ten different players accounted for the Mids 15 goals against Lafayette, including Christian Daniel s careerhigh 5. Daniel is the first Navy freshman to notch 5 of more goals in a conference game (ECAC, , or Patriot League, 2004-present) in program history. Junior Ryan Wade produced a 5-point game against the Leopards with a goal and 4 assists. Wade bested that mark a week ago against Colgate where he matched his career high with 5 assists. It s the most assists by a Navy player since Greyson Torain dealt out 5 against Lehigh a year ago. Christian Daniel (3G, 2A), Jack Ray (4,1) and Greyson Torain (3,2) each produced 5-point games in the win over Bucknell. He, along with junior middie Ryan Wade, has produced at least one point in all 11 contests this season. He is the first Navy freshman to reach 15 goals and 10 assists since Sam Jones and Tucker Hull both produced 23 goals and 15 assists in He needs 1 point to become just the 13th freshman in school history to score 30 points and is 4 shy from breaking into the Mids top 10 rookie scorers. He is 3 goals away from Navy s all-time top 10 freshman goal scorers and is tied for 10th on Navy s freshman assists list. Daniel has scored all 4 of Navy s extra-man goals this season - 2 against Lafayette (3.10), 1 vs. Loyola (3.17), 1 vs. Colgate (4.7). Team IMPACT s mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. Established in 2011, Team IMPACT has matched over 900 children with collegiate teams at over 400 institutions in 45 states, improving the quality of life of hundreds of courageous children and touching the lives of over 25,000 student-athletes. For more information about the program, log on to www. goteamimpact.org(.) Here s a little more about Navy s favorite teammate - Grayson is in first grade. He lives with his parents Dan and Danielle, brother Holden, sister Annabelle, and their dog Fitz. Outside of school, Gray loves legos, all things Star Wars, outdoor activities and being read to - especially Curious George stories! But his favorite activity is blowing the whistle at Navy lacrosse practices for the faceoff drills. Gray has a tremendous heart, a natural ability to put others first and to keep a smile on through even the most difficult circumstances. 9 NAVY FIELDS ELITE MIDFIELD LINE All-American midfielders Casey Rees and Greyson Torain were among the 50 players named to the 2018 Tewaaraton Award Watch List on March 1. The Navy pair join Patriot League players Johnny Surdick and David Symmes of Army, Chris Gray and Jack Wilson of Boston U., Will Sands of Bucknell, Andrew Pettit of Lehigh and Loyola s Foster Huggins and Pat Spencer on the list. Navy also has two players on the women s preseason watch list - Jenna Collins and Kelly Larkin. Torain is the team s third-leading scorer this season with 26 points on 14 goals and 12 assists, while Rees has amassed 14 points on 11 goals and 3 assists. In 2016, Rees etched his name in as one of the program s top-scoring midfielders. As the team s thirdleading scorer, he produced 37 points on a team-best 34 goals and 3 assists. The 37 points are tied as the sixth most by a midfielder in school history. The 34 goals are the most by a Navy player since 2004 when Joe Bossi pumped in 44 and Ian Dingman scored meanwhile, the 34 goals are the third most in program history by a midfielder and the most since Brian Keith set the record of 41 in of his 37 points were scored against Patriot League foes, while he scored just 11 points against nonconference opponents. Last season, Torain stepped up his game and was tied as the Mids leading scorer with 38 points alongside Ryan Wade (13-25=38). Torain recorded a team-high tying 23 goals and dealt out 15 assists. The last time a midfielder led Navy in scoring was in 2010 when Pat Moran totaled 38 points on 28 goals and 10 assists. It has been accomplished 22 times with Graham Gill ( ), Jamie Slough ( ), Brian Keith ( ), Glen Miles ( ) and Mike Chanenchuk ( ) having done it multiple times over their careers. One of Torain s most incredible stats is 37 of his 54 career goals have been unassisted, including 18 of 23 a year ago and 7 of 14 this spring. Wade, meanwhile, was moved from attack to midfield in the fall and has flourished in his new position. He stands #2 on the Mids scoring list this season with 27 points on 6 goals and 21 assists. He is ranked 22nd nationally in assists per game (1.91) and is ranked 20th on the Mids all-time assists leader board with 46 in just 27 contests. ALL IN THE FAMILY Over the years, Navy has seen several sets of brothers walk through the gates of the Academy. Some of those brothers attended the Academy at the same time, like the Looneys (Brendan 04, Steve 06, Billy 07) and the Lennons (Clipper 05, Bobby 09, Joe 10). Others, like Shane ( 09), Pat ( 14) and Brendan ( 16) Durkin, just missed playing alongside one another. Navy has one sets of brothers on this season s squad - Casey ( 18) and Spencer ( 21) Rees. Older brother, Matt, was a four-year letterwinner and two-time All- American long-stick midfielder for the Mids who graduated last May. The Rees father, Cliff ( 88) played basketball alongside David Robinson at Navy and earned a trip to the Elite 8 his Plebe year. Matt and Casey Rees are among just four sets of brothers who have earned All-America honors while playing for the Midshipmen. They join the Looney s (Steve and Billy), the Supko s (Len and Denny) and the MacLaughlin s (Don and Harry). Junior midfielder Ryan Wade and 2017 graduate Connor Wade, who played goalkeeper for the Mids, are the sons of two-year lacrosse letterwinner Rear Adm. John Wade ( 90) and nephew of three-year lacrosse letterwinner Tim Andrews ( 88). Senior defenseman Steve Hincks father, Steven ( 78), garnered Honorable Mention All-America honors as a defenseman for the Mids his senior year. As a freshman he was a member of the team that played in the program s first NCAA Championship Game and was an NCAA Semifinalist the following three seasons. Sophomore attackman Connor Young s father, Steve, is a 1984 graduate of the Naval Academy and was a member of the football and soccer teams. Freshman attackman Joe Byrne has a familiar last name around the Yard. That s because nearly everyone in his immediate family has graduated from the Naval Academy. His father, Bill, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1987 and later served as the Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy from A Rear Admiral in the Navy, he assumed command of Carrier Strike Group 15 in October of A three-year football letterwinner, he was co-captain of the 1986 team. He also holds the school record for single-game completions (37). His mother, Amy, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1987 and was a member of the cross country and track & field teams. His sister, Brigid, graduated from the Naval Academy in 2013 and was a member of the cross country and track & field teams. His brother, Michael, graduated from the Naval Academy in 2016 and was a member of the sprint football team. His sister, Martha, is a senior at the Naval Academy and was a member of the women s lacrosse team her first two years in Annapolis. Freshman midfielder George Martin s father, George, is a 1991 graduate of the Naval Academy who was a member of the golf team. Navy Colgate Annapolis, Md. Navy HEAD COACH RICK SOWELL On June 9, 2011, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk introduced Rick Sowell, a man who has been involved with rebuilding programs at Georgetown, Dartmouth, St. John s and Stony Brook, as the Naval Academy s eighth head men s lacrosse coach in its 100-plus year storied history. In his first season at Navy, Sowell directed the Mids to a 6-6 record, including a 3-3 mark in Patriot League action. It marked Navy s first.500-win season since Navy capped off its season with an 8-2 rout over No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The six-goal victory marked the Mids largest margin of victory in the series since 1965 when Navy scored a 15-6 win over the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, the Class of 2012 became the first class since 1974 to graduate having twice beaten Hopkins. In 2014, the Mids earned their first trip back to the conference postseason tournament since Sowell guided Navy to a share of the Patriot League regularseason title in 2015 and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. He was named the 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year. Sowell garnered Patriot League Coach of the Year honors for a second straight year in 2016, led the Mids to the league s regular-season crown and the program s first NCAA Tournament bid since Additionally, Navy s opening-round win over Yale was the program s first NCAA Tournament win since Sowell compiled a (.644) record in five seasons at Stony Brook and was named the America East Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons as he guided the Seawolves to back-to-back America East regular-season titles ( ). In 2010, Sowell led Stony Brook to the program s first America East regular-season title, a school-record 13 wins, a No. 6 national ranking and a 9-7 victory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves were just a game away from advancing to the school s first final four, losing in to Virginia in the quarterfinals, Stony Brook had four players earn All-America honors, including Kevin Crowley who was the school s first First-Team All-American and was named the USILA Player of the Year. Sowell, who was an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2010 World Championships in England, led Stony Brook to a 9-6 record in 2009 and a final ranking of No. 20. It marked the school s first end-of-theseason national ranking. Stony Brook finished 4-1 in America East and stood as the regular season co-champions. Prior to Stony Brook, Sowell was tapped to head the rebirth of the St. John s lacrosse program that had been dormant since Sowell had just one season to recruit before the Red Storm took the field in Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth from and revived the Big Green program, taking the team from last place in the Ivy League to first. In his final season at Dartmouth in 2003, Sowell s squad posted an 11-3 record and won the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. It was Dartmouth s first Ivy League title since 1965 and just the third Ivy League title in school history. During the title run, the Big Green upset No. 2 Princeton marking the first time that Dartmouth had won at Princeton since Sowell was also named the NEILA Coach of the Year that season. Sowell s coaching career began at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he helped guide the Shoremen to the NCAA D-III national title game in 1986 and the semifinal round in Sowell was named the 1985 D-III National Midfielder of the Year and was also a two-time All-American. He helped lead Washington College to the D-III national championship game twice. His 45 goals and 14 assists earned him D-III First-Team All- America honors and an invitation to participate in the annual North-South All-Star Game. Sowell graduated from Washington College in 1986 with a bachelor s degree in history. 13
