1 Navy Midshipmen 2016 Lacrosse Game NOtes Gm 11: Army vs. Navy April 16 12:06 Pm West Point, N.Y. Game Day Storylines u Scene Setter: While bragging rights will once again be on the line when Army and Navy battle one another on Saturday at Michie Stadium (12:00 PM), both teams are also fighting for the right to host the Patriot League s postseason tournament slated for the week of April 25. The Mids, who enter the game 8-2 and 6-1 in Patriot League action, are led by fifth-year head coach Rick Sowell, while the 5-1 Black Knights are under the direction of 11th-year head coach Joe Alberici. Saturday s contest marks the 96th meeting in a series Navy leads, u Follow the Action: Saturday s contest will be televised live via CBS Sports Network with Jason Knapp and Steve Panarelli calling the action. Additionally, the American Forces Network will also carry the game live, bringing the action to the homes of our military men and women stationed abroad. Pete Medhurst will provide the call on 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV, as well as 1500 AM WFED. Radio coverage begins with the Navy Lacrosse Pregame Show at 11:45 AM. The game will NOT be streamed online due to television coverage. u What s on the Line?: Saturday s contest is much more than just your average game. One of the most storied rivalries in college sports, the winner of Saturday s Star Game not only gains bragging rights, but each member of that team receives a star for their letter sweater signifying a victory over their archrival. Additionally, a Navy win would secure the No. 1 seed for the Mids in the Patriot League Tournament (April 26 / 28/ May 1) and at minimum a share of the Patriot League regular-season title. If Army West Point wins, the No. 1 seed and regular-season crown will still be up for grabs. u 6 Straight, Do I Hear 7?: Navy has won six in a row for the first time since 2008 when it also won six straight. The Mids have not won seven in a row since opening the 2007 campaign 8-0 en route to an 11-4 finish. Navy s six-game winning streak is the fourth longest active streak behind Air Force (10, 10-2), Yale (10, 10-0) and Maryland (7, 8-2). u Poll Analysis: #9 Navy is ranked inside the top 10 for a second consecutive week and the first time since The Mids entered the 2009 campaign ranked 11th and after wins over VMI (13-5) and 19thranked Ohio State (8-6), they pushed up to #9. The Mids, however, fell back to 12th after dropping a 9-8 decision to sixth-ranked North Carolina on the road. Navy owns a record (59.9) when ranked and a mark (61.3) when ranked among the top 10. u Dueling D: Saturday s contest will feature the fourth and fifth-ranked defenses in the country. Navy boasts a 6.70 scoring defense and has surrendered doublefigure goals just twice this season - both in double-overtime losses (12-11 vs. Johns Hopkins, 10-9 at Boston U.). Since 2004, Navy is when holding its opponent to single digits. Army, meanwhile, stands fifth with its 7.00 mark and has also given up double digits just twice this spring (13-11 loss to Rutgers and win over Lehigh). u Double Digits: Navy has scored 109 goals in 10 games this season (10.90 G/gm). The Mids have not finished a season averaging double figures since 2007 when they produced goals per contest. Navy has reached double figures in 8 games this season and have won 6 in a row when scoring 10 or more goals. u The Race to 100: Senior attackmen Patrick Keena and T.J. Hanzsche are well within range of reaching the elusive 100-point scoring mark for their careers. Just 31 players have scored 100 career points in Navy s 109-year history. Keena owns 93 points, while Hanzsche has posted 90. Breaking Down the Rivalry All-Time Army-Navy Record Navy Leads, (56.6) Navy s Overall Record vs. Army, Last 20 Yrs. Navy Leads, (61.0) Navy s Star Game Record vs. Army, Last 20 Yrs. Navy Leads, (65.0) Overall Record vs. Army (52.1) Star Game Record vs. Army (57.5) Saturday s Army-Navy men s lacrosse game is one of three remaining Star competitions of the season. In addition to Saturday s lacrosse game, the Army-Navy men s tennis match will be played on April 23 (in Annapolis) beginning at 1:00 pm. The Army- Navy baseball series will also be played in Annapolis on April Navy needs to win just one of the final three Star competitions to secure the Star Series. Meaning, if Navy defeats the Black Knights in Saturday s lacrosse game, the Midshipmen will win the Star Series for the 18th time in the last 20 years. At worst, Navy at this point has clinched at least a tie in the Star Series Star Game Victories Over Army West Point W Cross Country M Indoor Track & Field M Cross Country Gymnastics M Swimming & Diving Wrestling W Swimming & Diving W Outdoor Track & Field Football M Outdoor Track & Field M Basketball Patriot League Tournament With two weeks remaining in the Patriot League regular season, the race for not only the right to host the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 1 seed, but the race to get into the tournament remains fairly murky. Navy faithful can rest easy, however, as the Midshipmen have already punched their ticket into the six-team tournament with a 6-1 record and their final conference game played on Saturday. A Navy win on Saturday would secure the No. 1 seed for the Mids and at minimum a share of the Patriot League regular-season title The top two seeds in the tournament will receive a bye, while the remaining seeds (3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5) will play in quarterfinal games on Tuesday, April 26. Those winners will then join the top two seeds in the weekend semifinal (April 29) and championship (May 1) rounds played at the site of the highest overall seed in the tournament. The brackets will re-seed after the quarterfinal round. While the Mids currently sit atop the standings with a 6-1 record and will be joined in the tourney by Army West Point and preseason favorite Loyola who are both 5-1, along with Lehigh who is 4-3. The final two spots have yet to be determined - Bucknell and Boston U. are 3-3, Colgate and Holy Cross are 1-5 and Lafayette is 0-6. If Bucknell wins on Friday, Colgate will be out of the tournament and the Bison will be in. If Boston U. loses to Loyola, it cannot clinch a spot, however, if Holy Cross loses to Colgate, the Terriers will be in. This weekend s lineup includes a Friday night matchup between Lafayette and Bucknell (7:00 pm), along with Saturday contests between Army and Navy (12:00 pm), Boston U. and Loyola (12:00 pm) and Holy Cross and Colgate (12:00 pm). Lehigh has a nonconference matchup against Cornell on Saturday (2:30 pm). 1 Navy Midshipmen NavySports.com Game , 6-1 PL Record 8-3, 5-1 PL 9 / 10 Ranking 20 / 20 Won 6 Streak Won 1 W, 16-9 vs. Colgate Last Game W, 15-4 at Boston U. Patriot League Tournament Semifinals Score By Quarters F #5 Army WP (10-5) #1 Navy (8-5) Despite reeling off five consecutive goals in the second half, Navy s rally fell short as Army West Point upset the top-seeded and 15th-ranked Midshipmen, 11-7, in the semifinals of the 2015 Patriot League Men s Lacrosse Tournament played in Annapolis last April. The Cadets scored the first six goals of the game on six shots as Navy was held scoreless in the opening quarter. The Mids finally got on the scoreboard at 6:55 in the second quarter when midfielder Kevin Wendel used a spin move to get his right hand free and fire in a 10-yarder off an assist from attackman T.J. Hanzsche. Army, though, would answer with a pair of goals to push its lead to seven (8-1) at the break. The Mids began to climb their way back into the game when just 58 seconds into the second half Navy midfielder Colin Flounlacker juked middie A.J. Canara on the right wing, sending his lefty shot at the ankles of 2015 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Sam Somers. It would be the first of five in a row for the Mids. Down three goals heading into the fourth quarter, Navy used only 37 seconds before cutting the lead to two at 8-6 when Gabe Voumard won a foot race down the right alley and scorched the back of the net from 10 yards out. After being held scoreless by Navy for 22-plus minutes, Army senior Alex Newsome found Jimbo Moore for the extra-man goal following an interference call to put the Cadets up by three with 11:12 remaining in the game. Navy trimmed the deficit to two when Flounlacker sent a pass to Hanzsche for the doorstep goal. Army scored the final two goals of the game to post the 11-7 win and punch its ticket into the Patriot League Championship Game. Scoring Summary h-v 1 11:54 A Mullins from Cook :21 A J. He has amassed a record in 12 years as a collegiate head coach and a mark leading the Army program. The Black Knights have three losses by a combined four goals, dropping a decision to Rutgers, a 9-8 loss to Syracuse and an 8-7 decision to Bucknell. In addition to five Patriot League wins, Army s nonconference victories include a 9-5 win over UMass, a 22-3 win against VMI and a 16-6 win against NJIT. Army is ranked among the nation s top 10 in eight statistical categories, including boasting the fifth-best scoring defense (7.00). Additionally, the Black Knights are among the top 10 in clearing percentage (#3, 91.1), faceoff winning percentage (#4, 64.6), man-down defense (#3, 77.8), scoring margin (#4,+5.91), ground balls (#5, 34.36), caused turnovers (#9, 8.73) and points per game (#10, 19.91). The Black Knights offense sits just outside of the top 10 in 11th, averaging goals per game. They have been held to single digits just 3 times this season. The attack tandem of junior Cole Johnson and freshman Nate Jones has been sensational. Johnson, who was recently added to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, is among the nation s scoring leaders. He has amassed 54 points on 30 goals and 24 assists and is ranked #3 in points per game (4.91), #12 in goals per game (2.73) and #11 in assists per game (2.18). Jones, meanwhile, has produced 31 points on 29 goals and 2 assists. He is 18th nationally in goals per game (2.64). He is averaging the second-most goals per game in the country out of the freshman class behind Rutgers Adam Charalambides (2.73). Another freshman, AJ Barretto, has been stout on defense, starting in goal for the Black Knights where he owns a 6.80 goals-against average and a 57.6 save percentage. He is seventh in the nation in GAA and sixth in save percentage. Senior defenseman Austin Schultz and rookie pole Danny DeSanti lead the team with 14 and 10 caused turnovers respectively. Army also boasts two of the top faceoff specialists in the country in senior Alex Daly and junior Dan Grabher. Daly has won 70 of his 105 draws (66.7), while Grabher has won 83 of his 129 faceoffs (64.3). Daly is fourth nationally and Grabher is seventh. Perhaps its weakest link is handling the ball. Army is averaging turnovers per game (#33). Fifty-five of its 147 turnovers have been at the hands of its starting attackmen. Army Vs. Navy - The Series Friday s contest marks the 96th contest between Army West Point and Navy on the lacrosse field, meeting for the 84th consecutive year. It s the longest continuous lacrosse series between Navy and another team. While Army West Point has won 7 of the last 10 games in the series, Navy snapped a six-game losing skid to its rival in last year s Star Game (10-7) played in Annapolis. However, the Black Knights avenged that loss just 13 days later when they defeated the Mids, 11-7, in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals. The Mids lead the series in West Point, although they have lost four in a row to Army on its home field. Navy s last win at Michie Stadium was on April 15, 2006, when the Mids captured an victory over the Black Knights. Navy has scored eight or more goals in 22 of the last 28 games against Army. However, the Mids have scored double figures just once in the last 10 contests against the Black Knights. Record Watchers Faceoffs: In his 34th game wearing a Navy uniform, junior Brady Dove became the Navy record holder for career faceoff wins. Dove won 13 of the 22 draws against Loyola (3.19) and on his 12th attempt of the day, he moved past previous record holder Chris Pieczonka ( ) who posted 363 wins over 46 contests. Dove has amassed 422 faceoff wins in three seasons. Sophomore Joe Varello stands 19th on the list with 46 wins, trailing 18th-place Dan Decker ( ) by 8. On April 2, Dove became only the ninth player in Patriot League history to reach the 400-win milestone behind a 13 for 16 performance against Holy Cross. He is tied for ninth on the league s all-time wins list, 2 behind current Loyola specialist Graham Savio in eighth and 18 behind seventh-place Ryan McCormack of Army West Point ( ). With 112 wins this spring, he stands ninth on Navy s single-season faceoff wins list. He is the only player in school history to reach 100 wins in three different seasons (163 in 2014, 147 in 2015). Meanwhile, he needs 14 wins to tie eighth-place Mikelis Visgauss (2008) and 17 to move into seventh alongside William Wallace (2006). The record of 173 was set by Chris Pieczonka during the Mids run to the National Championshpi Game in Goals: Senior attackman T.J. Hanzsche has scored 69 goals over his four seasons. He leads the team with 23 assists this season and owns 57 for his career. He is just the 18th player in school history to reach the 50-assist milestone. Ranked 14th, he needs 2 assists to tie former teammate Sam Jones ( ) for 13th. Keena (23) needs 5 more assists to join the Mids singleseason assists leader board. The last player to add his name to that list was Jon Birsner who appears three times (29), 2005 (31) and 2006 (36). Twentythree assists are the most by a Navy player since 2012 when Tucker Hull dealt out 24. Points: Keena and Hanzsche are well within reach of the elusive 100-point scoring mark for their careers. Just 31 players have scored 100 career points in Navy s 109-year history. Keena owns 93 points, while Hanzsche has amassed 90. Saves: Senior keeper John Connors moved into 11th on Navy s career saves chart (343) following his season-high 13-save effort at Lehigh (3.26). 7 Navy Lacrosse Partners with Team Impact The Navy lacrosse team was introduced to and adopted five-year-old Grayson Osborne last fall through Team IMPACT. Team IMPACT s mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. Established in 2011, Team IMPACT has already matched over 900 children with collegiate teams at over 400 institutions in 45 states, improving the quality of life of hundreds of courageous children and touching the lives of over 25,000 student-athletes. For more information about the program, log on to Here s a little more about Navy s newest teammate - Grayson s favorite color is green and his favorite foods are chips & guacamole and sun butter & jelly sandwiches. He s a big fan of the TV show Star Wars Rebels and his favorite song is This Too Shall Pass by Tyler Stenson. Grayson and his family (parents Dan and Danielle, brother Holden and sister Annabelle) have a boxer named Theo and a maltese named Fitz. Grayson s favorite activities include playing Star Wars, riding his bike, fishing, being outdoors and playing with Legos. Grayson has an incredible imagination and due to the fact he is often home while his siblings are in school, he likes creating worlds and scenarios, usually based on Star Wars or Pirates that he brings the rest of the family into. He is also incredibly selfless and whenever he has to have surgery he picks out gifts to wrap and give to the other kids on his floor. Grayson served as an honorary team captain in last Saturday s game against Colgate, walking out with cocaptains Patrick Keena and Jules Godino for the coin flip and leading the team onto the field with the American flag. Navy Among Winningest Programs Navy is one of just seven Div. I men s lacrosse programs that has produced 700 wins and one of four to reach 775 victories. With 780 wins, Navy is the fourth-winningest team in Div. I men s lacrosse history behind Johns Hopkins (961), the only program to top 900 wins, Syracuse (876) and Maryland (783). Navy will play three of the other six teams who have won 700-plus games this season - Johns Hopkins (L, OT) - including Army West Point (4.16) and Maryland (4.19) in its next two contests. The Mids are looking to snap one more streak - a fourgame losing streak in games played at West Point. Navy hasn t beaten the Black Knights on their home field since April 15, 2006 (11-10). The Mids dropped a 9-6 decision in 2008, lost 11-8 in the 2010 Patriot League Tournament, lost 9-6 in 2012 and lost 14-7 in Ironically, prior to their current four-game skid, the Mids had won five in a row at West Point (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006). All in the Family Over the years, Navy has seen several sets of brothers walk through the gates of the Academy. Some of those brothers attended the Academy at the same time, like the Looneys (Brendan 04, Steve 06, Billy 07) and the Lennons (Clipper 05, Bobby 09, Joe 10). Others, like Shane ( 09), Pat ( 14) and Brendan ( 17) Durkin, just missed playing alongside one another. Navy has two sets of brothers on this season s squad - Matt ( 17) and Casey ( 18) Rees and Connor ( 17) and Ryan Wade ( 19). Senior attackman T.J. Hanzsche s father, Tom, was a four-year letterwinner for the Mids from who played attack on four NCAA Quarterfinal teams. Senior goalie John Connors is the brother of four-year letterwinner Brendan Connors ( 10), who played on two NCAA Tournament teams and one (2007) of two Navy teams who went undefeated in Patriot League play. Junior goalkeeper Connor Wade and freshman attackman Ryan Wade are the sons of two-year lacrosse letterwinner Capt. John Wade ( 90) and nephew of three-year lacrosse letterwinner Tim Andrews ( 88). Matt and Casey Rees father, Cliff ( 88) played basketball alongside David Robinson at Navy and earned a trip to the Elite 8 his Plebe year. Sophomore long pole Steve Hincks father, Steven ( 78), garnered Honorable Mention All-America honors as a defenseman for the Mids his senior year. As a freshman he was a member of the Navy team that played in the program s first NCAA Championship Game and was an NCAA Semifinalist the following three seasons. Midfielder Joe Lennon scored four goals for the Mids, including the last three. It marked the Mids first overtime win in postseason action, as Navy previously lost NCAA Tournament decisions to Cortland State (2OT) in 1972 and Washington & Lee (3OT) in The Navy win also goes down in the record books as the longest Patriot League Tournament contest. The Mids 8-7 loss against Cornell in 2008 marked the first time in program history that Navy had played an overtime game at a neutral site. Hofstra has previously hosted the quarterfinal round eight times, most recently in 2014, while Delaware also held the event in Navy has hosted five times previously, including in Seven Mids Named to Patriot League Silver Anniversary Team Seven former Navy standouts, including six who played in the 2004 NCAA Championship Game, were named to the Patriot League Men s Lacrosse 25th Anniversary Team it was announced last August. The Patriot League announced 25-player teams in each league-sponsored sport to commemorate its Silver Anniversary of being an all-sport conference. The league began sponsoring football in 1986 before becoming an all-sport conference during the season. The anniversary teams were voted upon by representatives of each league school. Among the men s lacrosse honorees, 10 received Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year recognition, including each of the last five, and all but one of the winners since The list also includes four winners of the league s defensive player of the year honor and two recipients of the goalkeeper of the year award. Eighteen of the 25 honorees earned first, second or third-team All-America status during their career, while the group has combined for 68 All-Patriot League honors. Jon Birsner, Navy ( ) Birsner, along with his Silver Anniversary teammates, helped propel Navy to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances beginning in 2004 when the Midshipmen won the hearts of America en route to their Memorial Day appearance in the National Championship Game against Syracuse. Also Navy s inaugural season in the Patriot League, the 2004 campaign saw the Mids win a program-record 15 games, claim its first of nine Patriot League Regular-Season titles (co- or outright) and win five Patriot League Tournament crowns. A two-time All-American, Birsner garnered Second- Team All-Patriot League honors as a junior before closing out his career as the 2006 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. He finished his career as one of just three players in program history to score at least 100 goals and deal out 50+ assists. Jordan DiNola, Navy ( ) DiNola, is joined by Billy Looney, Steve Looney and Matt Russell, among a group of just 36 men in the program s 108-year history to earn All-America honors at least three times. Also, one of just three players in school history to earn First- Team All-Patriot League recognition three times, he capped off his career by being named the 2008 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. Along the way, he anchored defenses that were ranked No. 1 nationally in 2006 (5.47), #3 in 2007 (6.60) and #3 in 2008 (6.50). A year later, the Mids led the country surrendering 6.63 goals per game. A two-time First-Team All-Patriot League selection, he earned Third-Team All-America honors in 2004 and first-team kudos in 05. Billy Looney, Navy ( ) Looney is one of 36 players in program history to earn All-America honors at least three times and one of only 13 to lay claim on one of the top three All-America squads (1st, 2nd or 3rd, not Honorable Mention) at least three years. A First-Team All-Patriot League selection as a sophomore, junior and senior, he was a member of four Patriot League Regular Season and Tournament-winning teams. Navy 15 Head Coach Rick Sowell On June 9, 2011, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk introduced Rick Sowell, a man who has been involved with rebuilding programs at Georgetown, Dartmouth, St. John s and Stony Brook, as the Naval Academy s eighth head men s lacrosse coach in its 100- plus year storied history. In his first season at Navy, Sowell directed the Mids to a 6-6 record, including a 3-3 mark in Patriot League action which featured a victory over 12th-ranked Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. It marked Navy s first.500-win season since Navy capped off its season with an 8-2 rout over No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The six-goal victory marked the Mids largest margin of victory in the series since 1965 when Navy scored a 15-6 win over the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, the Class of 2012 became the first class since 1974 to graduate having twice beaten Hopkins. In 2014, the Mids to put together a 3-5 Patriot League mark and earned their first trip back to the conference postseason tournament since He guided Navy to a share of the Patriot League regularseason title in 2015 and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. He was named the 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year. Sowell compiled a (.644) record in five seasons at Stony Brook and was named the America East Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons as he guided the Seawolves to back-to-back America East regular-season titles ( ). The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak to top-10 opponents, as it last defeated a top-10 team on April 3, 2009, when the Mids defeated No. 8 Maryland, In 2010, Sowell led Stony Brook to the program s first America East regular-season title, a school-record 13 wins, a No. 6 national ranking and a 9-7 victory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves were just a game away from advancing to the school s first-ever final four, narrowly losing in to Virginia in the quarterfinals, Stony Brook had four players earn All-America honors, including Kevin Crowley who was the school s first First-Team All-American and was named the USILA Player of the Year. Sowell, who was an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2010 World Championships in England, led Stony Brook to a 9-6 record in 2009 and a final ranking of No. 20 in the country. It marked the school s first end-of-the-season national ranking. Stony Brook finished 4-1 in America East and stood as the regular season co-champions. Prior to Stony Brook, Sowell was tapped to head the rebirth of the St. John s lacrosse program that had been dormant since Sowell had just one season to recruit before the Red Storm took the field in Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth from and revived the Big Green program, taking the team from last place in the Ivy League to first. In his final season at Dartmouth in 2003, Sowell s squad posted an 11-3 record and won the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. It was Dartmouth s first Ivy League title since 1965 and just the third Ivy League title in school history. During the title run, the Big Green upset No. 2 Princeton marking the first time that Dartmouth had won at Princeton since Sowell was also named the NEILA Coach of the Year that season. Sowell s coaching career began at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he helped guide the Shoremen to the NCAA Division III national title game in 1986 and the semifinal round in Sowell was named the 1985 Division III National Midfielder of the Year and was also a two-time All-American. He helped lead Washington College to the Division III national championship game twice. His 45 goals and 14 assists earned him Division III First- Team All-America honors and an invitation to participate in the annual North-South All-Star Game. Sowell graduated from Washington College in 1986 with a bachelor s degree in history.
