2 Navy Coaching Staff Richie MEADE Head Coach 16th Year at Navy / 20th Overall North Carolina 76 One of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, Richie Meade is one of the most sought after coaches in the game today. Synonymous with leadership and discipline, Meade embarks on his 20th season as a collegiate head coach and 16th at the Naval Academy with one thing on his mind - leading the Midshipmen to a National Championship. While it s not a simple task, the 2004 National Coach of the Year has orchestrated the resurgence of Navy lacrosse over the last six seasons. Though playing in the 2004 National Championship Game thrust Navy lacrosse back into the national limelight, the Mids fell two goals short of claiming their first NCAA lacrosse title and two goals shy of returning to the national semifinals in 05. While it had the lacrosse community buzzing, it s left Meade and his Midshipmen hungry for the opportunity to return to the National Championship Game and their chance at etching their name on that coveted trophy. Not only has Meade kept Navy on par with the growth of lacrosse, the program continues to be lauded for its accomplishments. Navy is one of just 12 teams all-time to appear in the National Championship game, including one of nine to make multiple appearances. Additionally, Meade s Mids are one of just four teams to have been invited to the national tournament in each of the last six seasons. Only one other time in program history ( ) has Navy made as many consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. Navy has won 72.9 percent of its games over the last six seasons and is ranked fifth nationally in wins with 70. Meanwhile its winning percentage is seventh among the national powers. In each of the last six years, the Midshipmen have reached double-digit wins, marking the first time in school history they have achieved that feat. Navy posted a school-record 15 wins in 2004 and the second-most wins in 2005 with 12. The Mids turned in backto-back 11-4 records in 2006 and 07, posted a 10-6 mark in 08 and produced an 11-5 record last spring. The Class of 2007 graduated as the winningest class (wins) in school history with a record, while the grads from 2006 and 08 produced 44 wins, the second most in school history. Additionally, Navy owns a remarkable six-year 32-5 (.865) record in Patriot League action and has won at least a share of the regular-season title in five of the six seasons it has been a member of the league. The Mids have also won five of the six tournament crowns, including last year when Navy clipped Colgate in triple overtime before upsetting top-seeded Bucknell, 9-8, to earn the league s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Rise of Navy Lacrosse After playing in the 2004 National Championship, the hunger to make a return trip was a driving force throughout the 2005 campaign. It was that drive that helped the Mids overcome obstacles thrown their direction every step of the way, which included multiple injuries. Despite being short-handed and banged up most of the season, the Mids produced a 12-4 record, claimed their second-consecutive Patriot League Tournament title and made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament as the fifth seed. The Mids produced a first-round victory over Delaware at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, but dropped a two-goal decision against sixth-ranked Virginia at Homewood Field in Baltimore in the quarterfinals. The last time Navy won back-to-back first round games was the 1987, 88 and 89 seasons in which the Mids claimed opening-round wins over Brown, Harvard and Penn, respectively. Seven of Navy s last eight games of the season were against nationally-ranked opponents and the Mids posted a 4-3 record which featured a pair of victories over arch rival Army. The Midshipmen also posted a 9-8 win over Maryland during that eight-game stretch, their first win over the Terps in Annapolis since It also marked the first time since 1980 and 81 in which Navy has won backto-back contests against Maryland. Nine Midshipmen were named to All-Patriot League teams, while six players garnered All-America recognition. Has led the Midshipmen to 70 wins over the last six years, the fourth most in the country. Has led Navy to six-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since it earned 12 straight berths between the Mids are just one of four teams (Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Maryland) to appear in each of the last six tournaments. Led the Mids to the National Championship Game in 2004 for the first time since Navy is one of just 12 teams all-time to appear in the National Championship Game and one of nine to make multiple appearances. In 2004, became the fourth coach in school history to receive the Morris Touchstone Memorial Award as the National Coach of the Year. Has helped mold an All-American in all 15 seasons at the Naval Academy with 18 different players earning the distinction. Seven players earned All-America honors in 2004, the most since the 1975 campaign. Produced Navy s first Kelly Award winner, Mickey Jarboe in 1999 and 2000, since Leonard Supko garnered the honor in Matt Russell, a 2006 graduate, received the Kelly Award in Navy Coaching Staff Meade has led the Mids to 10 or more wins in each of the last six seasons, the first time in school history. Over the last six seasons, Navy has produced the topfour win totals in school history (school-record 15 in 2004, 12 in 05, 11 in 06, 07 and 08). Has led the Midshipmen to at least a share of the regular-season crown four times and five Patriot League Tournament titles since joining the league in 04. Has directed Navy to a 32-5 Patriot League record and an 10-1 mark in the Patriot League Tournament. Led Navy to its first documented win over a No. 1- ranked team with a 9-6 win over Maryland (4/10/04). Owns a 15-3 record against arch rival Army, including wins in 13-straight games ( ), the longest winning streak by either team in series history. Dating back to 2003, Navy has won 40-straight games when holding its foes to five or fewer goals. Has guided the Mids to a 39-2 record over the last four years when scoring 10 or more goals. His defense has been among the top five in eight of the last 10 seasons, including 2005 and 06 when it was ranked No it has been among the top three in five ( ) of the last six seasons. The Mids have posted a record at home over the last six seasons, outscoring their foes, The Class of 07 holds the school record for most wins with 49, while the Class of 06 and 08 are second with 44 wins. Tournament for a third-consecutive year routing 14thranked North Carolina (11-3), defeating arch rival and nationally-ranked Army twice and picking off fourth-ranked Maryland on its home field along the way. Despite winning a share of its third-straight Patriot League regularseason crown, Navy was forced to defend its title on neutral territory when the Mids cruised past Lehigh and Army to win their third-consecutive Patriot League Tournament and earned the league s automatic bid to play in the NCAA Tournament. It was in Washington, D.C. where the Mids season was cut short by a come-from-behind win by fourth-ranked Georgetown in the NCAA quarterfinals. Navy opened its 2007 campaign on a remarkable roll, winning its first eight contests, including an impressive 19-8 victory over No. 5 North Carolina. The Mids, however, dropped three of their next four games by a combined three goals. Navy rebounded by defeating Army and Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament to win its fourth-straight conference title and earn the league s automatic bid to play in the NCAA Tournament. Eleven Midshipmen were named to All-Patriot League teams, while Richie Meade was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time in four years. Meanwhile, Billy Looney was named a First-Team All- American and defenseman Jordan DiNola was named to the honorable mention squad for the second-straight year. Heading into the 2008 campaign, there were more questions than answers for Meade. While Navy s defense remained nearly intact from the previous year, its offense was decimated by graduation and injuries. Navy answered the critics by winning eight of its first nine games - dropping a heartbreaker in overtime to sixthranked Cornell, while taking overtime wins over NCAA Tournament qualifier Ohio State and Bucknell. Six of Navy s last seven games, however, were against nationally-ranked foes who seemed to solve the Mids. After getting clipped in OT by Georgetown, Navy came back to take a 5-4 victory over No. 3 Maryland on the road, its first win over a top-three program since beating the Terps in 2004 when they were ranked No. 1. What followed, however, was a three-game skid, including a 12-9 loss to Colgate in the opening round of the conference tournament. Despite the slide at the end of the regular season, the Midshipmen received an at-large bid to play in the NCAA Tournament where they would go on and beat fourth-seeded North Carolina, 8-7, in Chapel Hill. Arch rival Johns Hopkins, however, played the spoiler in Annapolis on May 17, as the Blue Jays ended Navy s season in the quarterfinals. Jordan DiNola, who was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, became just the 33rd player in school history to earn All-America kudos three times, as he was named to the second team, while Nick Mirabito completed his collegiate career seventh on the Mids career scoring list and was an Honorable Mention All- America selection. A return trip to the NCAA Tournament was the highlight of a 2009 season that saw the Mids face their fair share of adversity. Three frustrating one-goal losses and three changes in the goal were quickly erased by a run from the Mids that would give them the much-needed momentum at just the right time of the year. Meade called upon senior keeper Tommy Phelan to step into the cage on March 28 against Georgetown. It was just what the doctor ordered, as the Mids snapped a five-game skid against the Hoyas, The following week, Coach Meade is Navy Lacrosse. His attitude, approach and mindset reflect the type of athletes the Naval Academy is looking to produce. - Three-time All-American and 2004 Markland Kelly Award winner Matt Russell the Mids man-handled No. 8 Maryland, 10-4, in front of a national television audience staged at the country s premier lacrosse venue, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial stadium. And on April 11, the Mids clamped down on Army at the Day of Rivals in Baltimore, earning an N-Star and bragging rights for the year. Navy s quest for a fifth Patriot League crown began with a triple overtime win over Colgate, thanks to junior middie Joe Lennon who scored the final three goals of the game. The Mids then utilized both ends of the field without flaw to upset top-seeded Bucknell and earn the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Junior attackman Tim Paul paced Navy with 32 points on 18 goals and 14 assists to garner Honorable Mention All-American honors, while junior attackman Brendan Connors erupted for a team-high 21 goals. Meanwhile, Navy s man-down unit was ranked No. 1 in the country, yielding just six goals on 40 attempts (.150). The Mids 7.61 goals-against average was ranked eighth nationally. 2004: A Season to Remember The year 2004 will forever be etched into the Navy lacrosse annals. Its 9-6 win over Maryland was the program s first win over a top-ranked program and one-of-six Navy wins over top-10 ranked teams. The Academy also attracted better than 18,500 fans to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to witness No. 1 Johns Hopkins battle No. 2 Navy in a 10-9 overtime Blue Jay decision. Along the way, Meade helped orchestrate Navy s seventh-consecutive Star Game victory against arch rival Army. After sweeping through the Patriot League with a 7-0 record in its first season as a member of the league, Navy conquered Colgate and Hobart in the league s postseason tourney to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Hobart win came with an added bonus, marking Meade s 100thcareer victory. By virtue of its Patriot League Tournament win, Navy earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, making its first appearance since The Midshipmen went on to gain the nation s support as they fought their way through the NCAA Tournament. First defeating Penn handily, 11-5, at home and then surviving a battle against 32: Navy Lacrosse Media Guide seventh-seeded Cornell on the Big Red s home turf. Navy made it to the coveted national semifinals where it beat eighth-ranked Princeton, 8-7, before succumbing to Syracuse by a goal in the finale with better than 40,000 fans looking on. By year s end, seven Mids garnered All-America kudos, including keeper Matt Russell who was named a First-Team All-American and the winner of the Ens. C. Markland Kelly Award as the nation s top goalkeeper. Coach Meade s sincere concern with developing gentlemen of character and integrity goes beyond the playing field. He sees that his players graduate from the Naval Academy as not only great lacrosse players, but also gentlemen of honor and integrity who are able to tackle any challenge with the tenacity and zeal that he has for the game of lacrosse graduate and three-year letterwinner Chris Pieczonka Meade was the recipient of the Morris Touchstone Memorial Award, given to the National Coach of the Year. He is just the fourth Naval Academy coach to earn the Touchstone Award. Navy s Seventh Head Coach In 1995, Meade joined the Naval Academy where he was named the program s seventh head coach and now leads the Midshipmen into their 102nd season as a varsity sport at the Naval Academy. It was a homecoming of sorts, as he served as an assistant coach for the Mids for five years under then-head coach Bryan Matthews from Meade has spent the past 14 years renewing the tradition of Navy lacrosse and implementing an aggressive style of play that has been the program s trademark. Since coming to the Academy, there has been at least one Midshipman who has earned All-America honors, including three-time honorees Andy Ross ( 97) and Chad Donnelly ( 00), 2006 graduates Steve Looney and Matt Russell, Billy Looney ( 07) and Jordan DiNola ( 08). Meanwhile, two-time First-Team All-America Mickey Jarboe was named the Kelly Award winner in 1999 and 2000 and Russell claimed the award in 04. In his first season at Navy, the Mids posted a 6-6 mark, as both coach and team adjusted to a new system. The Mids hoped to improve on that record in '96, but a mere four points kept Navy from celebrating a 7-5 record, and the team finished 4-8 overall. In 1997, Navy jumped out to a 4-0 record and a No. 4 national ranking, only to lose its final four games and finish at an even 6-6. In 1998, Meade s squad posted its first.500-plus season since his arrival, thanks in part to returning six of the top seven scorers from 97. The year 1999 saw the Mids return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since The Mids earned an at-large bid after producing a 7-7 record with impressive wins over North Carolina and Georgetown. In 2000, the Mids associated themselves with a conference the ECAC for the first time in program history. Meade s squad finished tied for first with Georgetown,

5 however, the Hoyas posted a win over the Mids in Washington, D.C. to win the head-to-head tie breaker. In 2001 and 2002, the Mids recorded identical 8-5 records and both years they finished third in the league. The Journey to Navy A native of Williston Park, N.Y. on Long Island, Meade played at Nassau Community College before transferring to North Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976, as well as a Master of Science degree in After working in the recreation field and as an assistant coach at Duke, he was named an assistant at North Carolina in A year later, he earned his first head coaching job at the University of Baltimore, where he had a four-year record of The school dropped its athletic program in He then came to Navy for five years ( ) as an assistant lacrosse coach and Assistant Professor of Physical Education. 6 Navy Coaching Staff Stan ROSS Assistant Coach Third Year Loyola 96 Coaching Career Returning for his third season as a member of the Navy coaching staff is Stan Ross, who, after mentoring the Mids offensive squad alongside Anthony Gilardi in 2009, will take over the defensive reins in Under Ross leadership, Navy scored more goals and dealt out more assists than the season prior. The Mids averaged 8.94 goals, while turning in 5.56 assists per contest. Navy s starting attack combined to score 52 of Navy s 143 goals, while the trio also accounted for 38 of the 89 assists. Junior Tim Paul paced the Mids with 32 points on 18 goals and a team-high tying 14 assists en route to garnering Honorable Mention All-America recognition. Meanwhile, attackman Brendan Connors reaped the rewards of Ross coaching, as he came into his junior season having scored just two goals and dealt out two assists. Connors, in turn, paced the team in 2009 with 21 goals and 10 assists. Meanwhile, Navy also saw great production out of its midfield where Patrick Moran earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors behind his 20-goal, three-assist performance, while all-league middie Joe Lennon had the hot end at the end of the season, scoring four goals in leading the Mids to a triple-ot win over Colgate in the Patriot League semis. Though he coached Navy s offense in 2009, he orchestrated the Mids man-down unit, a squad that yielded just six extra-man goals in 40 attempts (.850) and was ranked No. 1 in the country. In particular, the Mids finest performance came against league rival Colgate. Having faced the Raiders twice during the season, Colgate was 0 for 6 against the Mids man-down unit. Ross helped carry on the Navy tradition of producing one of the stingiest defensive units in Div. I lacrosse. The Mids have been ranked among the nation's top four in scoring defense in eight of the last nine years and the top three in each of the last five seasons. In 2008, Ross helped Navy secure a No. 3 national ranking in fewest goals allowed per game, surrendering 104 goals in 16 games (6.50). Going into the NCAA quarterfinals, the Mids had been ranked No. 1 for seven consecutive weeks. The Mids held 10 of their 16 opponents to seven or fewer goals, winning 22 in a row when achieving this feat. It has given up double-figure goals just nine times in the last 46 games (2006-present) and 11 times in the last 62 games (2005-present). Navy held seven of its foes scoreless in the opening stanza, including nationallyranked Maryland. The Terps, who owned the nation s seventh-ranked scoring offense, was unable to score against the Mids defense for the first 41 minutes of the game. In league action, Navy held Lehigh and Holy Cross to a combined 36 shots in back-to-back contests. The Mountain Hawks were held without a shot in the first quarter, while the Crusaders managed just two shots in the opening half. Guided Navy s man-down defense to a No. 16 national ranking, stopping the EMO on 74.3 percent of the opportunities. Overall, the Mids surrendered nine extra-man goals and just two by Patriot League foes. Four defensive players garnered All-Patriot League recognition last spring under his direction, including Jordan DiNola who became the program s first player to be named the league defensive player of the year. Additionally, DiNola joined an elite list of players in school history who have been named All-Americans three times, being named to the second team in Coaching Roots Ross, who was named the third head coach in Butler lacrosse history on June 16, 2004, spent two seasons ( ) as the Bulldogs head coach before the program was dropped and the season cancelled on Jan. 31, He led the Bulldogs to a 9-17 record over two years, while nine of his player garnered All-Great Western Lacrosse League recognition. In his first season on the job, he inherited a program that featured just four seniors, but nonetheless led the Bulldogs to five wins. Four of Butler's losses in his first season were against ranked opponents and all on the road, while firstyear players accounted for 65 percent of the team's goal-scoring. Ross began his coaching career at Loyola where he was an undergraduate assistant to Dave Cottle in Upon graduating, Ross moved on to the University of Denver where the Pioneers were in their first year of Division I competition. In addition to coaching the defense, he assisted with fund-raising and recruiting. A year later, Ross accepted a position with Princeton as the program's defensive coach. That season the Tigers won the National Championship, finishing the 1998 campaign with a 14-1 record. From Princeton, Ross went on to serve as Tony Seaman s top assistant and defensive coordinator at Towson for six seasons ( ). In addition to his duties as defensive coordinator, he directed Towson's recruiting and scouting programs and served as the staff liaison to the Tigers' strength and conditioning coach. While at Towson, Ross helped lead the Tigers to a record, including three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Tigers finished the 2001 campaign with a record of 14-4 and advanced to the national semifinals after being crowned America East champions. Towson went on to win back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association titles and earned an automatic NCAA Tournament berth in his final two seasons with the program ( ). Additionally, the Tigers advanced to the national quarterfinals in Playing Career After a stellar prep career at Baltimore Boys' Latin School where he earned All-Metro honors for two straight years, he enjoyed a successful college career at Loyola College. He lettered all four years for the Greyhounds as a close defenseman and was a starter as a junior and senior. Personal Ross is a 1996 graduate of Loyola (Md.) College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. He and his wife, Kathleen, are the parents of a son, J.D., and a daughter, Katie. 34: Navy Lacrosse Media Guide

7 Anthony GILARDI Assistant Coach Second Year Ohio State 04 Coaching Career Anthony Gilardi is the newest member of the Navy coaching staff, joining the program as an assistant coach in October of In his second season, Gilardi will continue to focus on the success of the Mids offensive unit. Under Gilardi s leadership, Navy scored more goals and dealt out more assists in 2009 than the season prior. The Mids averaged 8.94 goals, while turning in 5.56 assists per contest. Navy s starting attack combined to score 52 of Navy s 143 goals, while the trio also accounted for 38 of the 89 assists. Junior Tim Paul paced the Mids with 32 points on 18 goals and a team-high tying 14 assists en route to garnering Honorable Mention All- America recognition. Meanwhile, attackman Brendan Connors reaped the rewards from Gilardi s coaching, as he came into his junior season having scored just two goals and dealt out two assists. Navy Coaching Staff Prior to his arrival in Annapolis, Gilardi had spent the previous eight years in Columbus, Ohio as a member of the Ohio State lacrosse program, four as a player and the last four as a coach. One of the most talked about teams in collegiate lacrosse over the last few years has been Ohio State and its ability to emerge as one of the contenders among the traditional powers. Though the program has been around for some 50 years, it wasn t until early this decade that former head coach Joe Breschi was able to jumpstart the program. Another individual who was a major contributor in helping develop the program was Anthony Gilardi, who helped lead the Buckeyes to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances as a player and once as a coach. In 2008, Ohio State experienced a record-breaking season that saw the Buckeyes post an 11-6 record and earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Facing eighth-seeded Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. in the opening round of the tournament, the Buckeyes dominated the Big Red to produce the school s first NCAA Tournament win (15-7) and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. Averaging goals per game, Ohio State was ranked third in the country in scoring offense, while it s extra-man attack was also ranked third, scoring on 45.7 percent (32-70) of its opportunities In his three seasons as a full-time assistant coach with the Buckeyes, the program never dipped below.500, nor did they finish lower than second in the conference standings. Coaching Roots Gilardi began his coaching career by working with both the Ohio State and Denison lacrosse programs. As the co-offensive coordinator at Denison during the campaign, he helped develop two All-North Coast Athletic Conference attackmen and led the Big Red to the Div. III NCAA Tournament. Additionally, he was responsible for creating game plans and breaking down film, while developing and implementing speed and agility programs. That same year, Gilardi signed on as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater where he worked with the attack on a one-on-one basis. His knowledge of both the program and the game gave him an edge over his peers as Breschi hired Gilardi as a full-time assistant coach in In his new role, Gilardi assisted newly-named Ohio State head coach Nick Myers with the instruction of the offense that turned out three All-Americans, eight All- GWLL selections and 2008 GWLL Player of the Year Kevin Buchanan during his tenure. In addition to helping develop and install offensive schemes, Gilardi was responsible for the Buckeyes faceoff and wing play, as well as breaking down game and practice film and creating scouting reports. He was involved in all aspects of recruiting, developing instructional camps and coaching clinics and implemented a Junior Recruit Day program. Playing Career A two-time All-Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) selection, Gilardi helped guide Ohio State to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003 after winning a share of the conference title. A year later, the Buckeyes earned their second-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth by way of claiming their first outright GWLL title with a 5-0 record. Anchored by his co-captain Gilardi, who was one of the top point producers (41) and assist (24) men in the country in 04, Breschi s Buckeyes turned in a 12-4 record, the most wins by the program since Ironically, one of their 12 wins was against a Navy team who would go on to win a school-record 15 games and earn a date with Syracuse in 2004 NCAA Men s Lacrosse Championship. Gilardi, who was named Ohio State s offensive MVP in 2004, stands 13th on the school s all-time scoring list with 133 points on 75 goals and 58 assists. Meanwhile, his 58 assists are the ninth most by a Buckeye. While he was cited multiple times for his play on the field, Gilardi also was recognized for his success in the classroom. A three-time scholar-athlete selection, he received Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2003 and 04. He earned a Bachelor of Sciences degree in History in 2004 and was the recipient of the prestigious Corwin A. Fergus Postgraduate Scholar-Athlete Scholarship. Though his collegiate playing days came to an end, Gilardi signed a free-agent contract to play with the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse in He played with the organization for two seasons. Personal Active among his coaching peers, Gilardi spoke on the topic of unsettled offense at the 2007 Intercollegiate Men s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA). A native of Baldwin, N.Y., Gilardi and his wife, the former Jessica Coridan, were married on Aug. 8, Mark GOERS Volunteer Assistant Coach Ninth Year Towson 95 Coaching Career After serving as Navy s Director of Lacrosse Operations for the last four years, Mark Goers is returning to the sidelines as Navy s volunteer assistant coach. One of the game s most prolific faceoff specialists, Goers will focus his time on improving the Mids faceoff unit, while on game day he will also handle the box. In addition, Goers is an instructor in the Naval Academy Physical Education Department. Goers came to the Academy in 2002 as an assistant coach, but in 2006 transitioned into the Mids Director of Lacrosse Operations. In that role, he oversaw Navy s travel, facilities scheduling, camps and clinics, as well as other administrative duties including budget, compliance items and film. As an assistant coach from , Goers molded the Mids into one of the most successful faceoff squads in the country. In 2004, Chris Pieczonka was ranked No. 2 nationally in faceoffs, winning 67.6 percent (173 of 256) of his draws and led Navy as a team to a tie for No. 2 in the national rankings, winning 65.5 percent (268 of 409). By virtue of his ability to face off, Pieczonka was ranked 10th nationally in ground balls, scooping up 5.81 per contest. Another player Goers is credited in refining is two-time All-American Steve Looney. The middle of three lacrosse playing brothers, Steve was the workhorse of Navy lacrosse during his four-year career. A multi-faceted player, he saw time as a face-off specialist, a wing player on face-offs, a defensive midfielder and an offensive midfielder. Looney, the 2004 Patriot League Tournament MVP, surfaced with the ball in 2004 and 05 in nearly every ground ball opportunity. Playing Career Goers came to the Naval Academy after a three-year stint at Ohio State where he oversaw the Buckeyes offense and face-off strategy. A 1995 graduate of Towson, Goers is regarded as one of the premier players in Tiger history. A 1994 Third-Team All-America, he held Towson records in face-offs won in a game (21 vs. Villanova in 94), ground balls in a season (127 in 94) and ground balls in a career (274, ) until 2004 when Justin Berry edged out Goers in those categories. Meanwhile, his 78.8 face-off winning percentage is the best single-season winning percentage in NCAA history. Coaching Roots Upon graduation, he began his coaching career in 1996 as an assistant coach at his alma mater where he helped lead the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the 96 NCAA Tournament. In 1998, he returned home and assisted his former high school coach Earl Brewer at Langely High School in his home state Virginia, and helped to direct the prep team to the state regional finals. Just a year later, he joined the Ohio State program that was beginning to flourish. In 2000, Goers helped develop face-off specialist Anthony Kelly to a.540 percentage the nation s 27th-best mark. The Fairfax, Va., native has competed for the Columbus Landsharks of the NLL and was an all-club team member for Team Toyota. Personal Mark and his wife, the former Jessica Anna Christina duhoffmann, were married Dec. 7, 2001, and reside in Kent Island with their son, William, and daughter, Juliette. Goers comes from an athletic family. His mother, a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan, holds multiple indoor track records, his father played basketball at Wittenberg and his brother, Matt, played lacrosse at Ohio State and was the team captain his senior campaign Navy Lacrosse Media Guide : 35
