All-Time Patriot League Tournament Record 11-3 All-Time NCAA Tournament Record Today s game Presented by Countdown to Faceoff 10 Navy has lost just 5 games (62-5) when scoring 10 or more goals since the start of the 2004 season. Navy is 16-0 under Sowell when scoring 10 or more goals (5-0 in 2012, 3-0 in 2013, 4-0 in 2014, 4-0 in 2015). 9 The Mids have successfully clinched what will be their ninth appearance in the Patriot League Tournament. Navy, who own a 5-2 record, is the only team who has punched its ticket into the 6-team tournament slated to begin with a pair of quarterfinal games on April Navy is looking for its eighth win of the season. The last time the Mids won 8 games was in 2009 when they finished the year 11-5, won the Patriot League Tournament and made their last appearance in the NCAA Tournament. 7 Junior attackman Patrick Keena needs 7 assists to join Navy s single-season top 20. The last player to add his name to that list was Jon Birsner in 2006 (36). 6 Sophomore Brady Dove is ranked #6 in the country in faceoff percentage, winning 66.5 percent of his draws. Last week marked the first time this season and only the fifth time in his career that he lost the faceoff battle, winning just 10 of 22 against Loyola. 5 Senior Gabe Voumard enters the game riding a 5-game point/goal-scoring streak. He is also 1 of just 2 players on the roster who have scored goals against Army. 4 Freshman Jack Ray has scored just 4 of his 16 goals in front of the home crowd. 3 Navy has had a player score hat tricks in 6 of the 11 contests this season. The Mids are 6-0 in those games. 2 Both Kevin Wendel and Jack Ray have produced 2 or more goals in 6 games this season. Wendel scored just 3 combined goals his first two years. 1 The Mids are 4-1 in one-goal contests this season. After dropping a 8-7 decision to Bucknell at home on Feb. 21, Navy has won four consecutive onegoal games against #19 Holy Cross (7-6), #14 Towson (8-7, 3OT), Lehigh (13-12) and Colgate (7-6). 1 Game Preview While bragging rights will once again be on the line when Army (8-3, 4-2 PL) and Navy (7-4, 5-2 PL) square off this Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (1:00 pm), both teams are also fighting for the right to host the league s postseason tournament slated for the week of April 20. Navy is atop the standings with a 5-2 record, while Army is 4-2 with two remaining games. Saturday s contest will be televised live by CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan (play by play) and Evan Washburn (analyst) calling the action. There will be no video stream available for this contest. The game will also be carried live by 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV with Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller handling the call. Coverage begins with the Navy lacrosse pregame show at 12:45 pm. Additionally, live stats will be available on the Mids official web site. Honoring Our Nation s Future Leaders Prior to the start of Saturday s contest, Superintendent Vice Adm. Ted Carter, Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk and Head Coach Rick Sowell will honor Navy s eight senior lacrosse players, as well as their parents, in celebration of Senior Day. Anchored by its senior leadership, Navy has produced a 7-4 record this spring. It s the most wins by the Mids since 2010 when Navy played its way into the Patriot League Championship Game. The Mids have also posted a 5-2 mark in Patriot League contests this season, the most wins in conference action since 2007 when Navy posted a 6-0 mark. Additionally, Navy has already punched its ticket to appear in the six-team Patriot League Tournament. On May 22, Navy s seniors will graduate and be commissed either 2nd Lieutenants in the Marine Corps or Ensigns in the Navy. Graduates serve a minimum of five years in the Navy or Marine Corps, while pilots serve eight years upon earning their wings. On Nov. 20, Navy s seniors received their service assignments. Two will be commissioned 2nd Lieutenants in the Marine Corps, while six will serve as Ensigns in the Navy. 3 Scouting the Black Knights Tenth-year Army head coach Joe Alberici has directed the Black Knights to an 8-3 overall mark, including a 4-2 Patriot League record. Army s losses have been by a combined SIX goals. The Black Knights dropped a 12-9 decision to #2-ranked Syracuse, a 7-6 decision at Holy Cross and a decision against #14 Loyola. Despite 3 losses, Army ranks #3 in the country in scoring margin (+6.18). Five of the Black Knights 8 wins have been by 8 or more goals, including 3 by double digits. Army is among the top 20 in 11 of the 15 statistical categories tracked by the NCAA. What has become a staple for recent Black Knights teams has been their defense. They enter Saturday s contest ranked #2 nationally, holding their foes to 6.55 goals per game while Maryland leads the country at The anchor among the defense is All-American goalkeeper Sam Somers who stands #3 in goals against average (6.83) and #11 in save percentage (56.5). Meanwhile, Army also ranks 9th in assists per game (7.91), 9th in points per game (20.64), 11th in scoring offense (12.73), 12th in shot percentage (32.4), 12th in winning percentage (72.7), 13th in clearing percentage (88.5), 14th in faceoff winning percentage (57.0), 17th in man-down defense (70.4) and 18th in ground balls per game (31.00). Army s two lowest rankings are in saves per game (#62, 9.00) and turnovers per game (#32, 13.64). Senior attackman John Glesener is atop the scoring leader board for the Black Knights with 42 points on 24 goals and 18 assists. He owns 4 of Army s 14 extraman goals. He is ranked 27th nationally in points per game (3.82). Meanwhile, sophomore attackman Cole Johnson has amassed 41 points with a team-best 30 goals and 11 assists. Junior attackman Connor Cook, whose cousin Taylor played lacrosse at Navy, has 26 goals and 6 assists for 32 points. He owns the fifth-longest goalscoring streak in the country, notching a goal in each of the last 17 contests which dates back to Feb. 16, All-Patriot League faceoff specialist Alex Daly (44-80, 55.0) suffered an injury midway through the season, but sophomore Dan Grabher has picked up where he left off. Grabher has won 80 of the 136 draws (58.8) he has taken and is ranked 14th nationally. Series vs. Army Overall Navy Leads, Last Navy Win , Navy 8-4 in Annapolis, Md. It s the longest continuous lacrosse series between Navy and another team. Navy owns a series advantage that included 13-straight wins by the Midshipmen between 1998 and The Mids have won 14 of the last 21 contests in the series. The Mids also own a advantage in Star Games, winning 11 of the last 17. Army, however, has won 7 of the last 8 games in the series, including each of the last 6 contests overall and 5-consecutive Star Games. The Mids lead the series in Annapolis, , however Army has won back-to-back games (2011, 13) on the Mids home field. Navy s last win at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium was a 12-1 decision on April 27, There have been only six times in the 93-game history (dating back to 1924) in which the two programs have battled twice in one season (1978 and 1981 in the NCAA Tournament; 2005, 06, 07 and 10 in the Patriot League Tournament). Navy has scored eight or more goals in 21 of the last 26 games against Army. The Mids have held the Black Knights to single digits in nine of the 15 games since joining the league in Army has reach double digits 4 times in the last 11 games against the Mids, including each of the last 2. Army wasted little time in making a statement, scoring its first goal just six seconds into the contest. In a mirror image of the 2013 contest, faceoff specialist Alex Daly won the draw and fed All-American attackman John Glesener who fired in his shot from 10 yards out. Navy answered just 51 seconds later when Jones ducked under his defender and sent his diving shot from the left crease past Army backup keeper Bobby Sincero. Jones goal, however, would be the last for the Mids until late in the second quarter as Army put together a 5-0 run that featured five different scorers. After nearly a 28-minute scoring drought, Navy punched in a goal with 1:14 left in the half when Jones found classmate Austin Heneveld who split a pair of defenders and sent an eight-yarder past Sincero. Just nine seconds later Army midfielder Michael Larrabee answered to again put the Black Knights up by five. Navy, though, would get the final say in the half as cocaptain Pat Kiernan intercepted an Army pass and ran the length of the field to find Jones for the transition goal and trim Army s lead to four (7-3) at the break. The Mids, who were outshot 21-8 in the opening half, scored two of the first three goals to start the second half. Army again put together a 3-0 run with three goals scored by three different players to gain its largest lead of the game at six (11-5) with 3:13 to play in the third. The Mids, however, could get no closer than five, as Army scored three of the game s final four goals. April 12, 2014 West Point, N.Y. Sophomore close defenseman Chris Fennell has made 21 consecutive starts. At least one Navy player has turned in a hat trick in 50 of the last 84 games (dating back to the 2009 season). Navy has had 6 games this season in which at least one player has posted a hat trick - VMI (T.J. Hanzsche, Dave Little, Kevin Wendel), Holy Cross (Jack Ray), Lafayette (Hanzsche, Wendel), Lehigh (Gabe Voumard), Colgate (Ray) and Boston U. (Colin Flounlacker, Wendel) - and is 6-0 in those contests. Since 2004, Navy owns an amazing 61-3 record when holding its opponents to six or fewer goals, including a 19-2 mark in the last seven seasons combined. Navy owns a remarkable 62-5 record when scoring 10 or more goals since 2004, including a 38-4 mark in the last seven seasons (9-1 in 2009, 10-1 in 2010, 3-2 in 2011, 5-0 in 2012,3-0 in 2013, 4-0 in 2014, 4-0 in 2015). At least one pole (close defense or LSM) has either scored a goal or dealt out an assist every year since Sophomore close defenseman Chris Fennell extended that trend with his man-down goal against Bucknell (2.21). He also punched in a transition goal in the triple overtime win over #14 Towson (3.3), taking the ball coast to coast for his second career goal. Fellow close defenseman Jules Godino added his name to the list by scoring his second collegiate goal and first of the year in the Mids win over Lehigh (3.14). Navy has been held to single digit extra-man goals in each of the last four seasons (7 in 2012, 9 in 2013, 7 in 2014, 9 in 2015). The Mids were 0 of 8 in their first three games this season before scoring on 2 of their 3 attempts at Holy Cross. The Mids head into the weekend having scored 9 goals on 37 attempts. Navy has scored 7 or fewer goals in 24 of its last 50 contests. The Mids snapped a 29-game losing streak with scoring 7 or fewer goals when they defeated Holy Cross on Feb. 28 in a 7-6 win. Navy also earned a 7-6 win over Colgate (3.21) on the road. Loyola (15-28) is the only team who has won the faceoff battle against the Mids this season, edging Navy by just 2. Navy has scored a man-down goal in each of the last five seasons, including goals by three current players. Patrick Keena scored a man-down goal against VMI in 2014 and a week later, T.J. Hanzsche scored vs. Georgetown. Chris Fennell added his name to that list earlier this year with his first collegiate goal in the loss to Bucknell. 47 of Navy s 111 goals (42.3) this season have been unassisted, including 12 of freshman Jack Ray s 16. May I Assist You? Junior attackman Patrick Keena has clearly made it a point to be the Mids play maker this season. He has accounted for 21 of Navy s 62 assists and is the first Navy player to deal out 20 or more assists since Tucker Hull recorded 24 assists in He is 24th in the country in assists per game (1.91). He tied for third in the Patriot League in assists per game, while Bucknell s David Dickson leads the league with 2.25 assists per game. Keena is 7 assists shy of joining Navy s single-season assists top 20. Michael Herger is 20th, having dealt out 28 in The last player to add his name to that list was Jon Birsner in 2006 (36 assists). Just ONE player has added his name to the list since Birsner appears 3 times on the list - T6th with 36 in 2006, 13th with 31 in 2005 and T17th with 29 in Keena, meanwhile, needs 12 assists to join the Mids career leader board. He owns 32 heading into the weekend. Eddie McKinnon ( ) and Bruce Seitz ( ) are tied for 20th on the list with 45 assists. 7 Dove Soars Among Faceoff s Elite, Added to Tewaaraton Watch List Sophomore Brady Dove etched his name into the Navy record books as one of the best faceoff men a year ago, boasting the nation s 20th-best winning percentage ( , 56.4) and setting program records for faceoff wins and attempts by a rookie. Little did anyone know, it would be just a hint of what the future would hold for the Second-Team All-Patriot League selection. This year, Dove stands #6 in the country winning 119 of the 179 draws (66.5). He is eighth on the Mids singleseason wins list, 54 shy of tying record holder Chris Pieczonka (2004). Dove was one of 11 players added to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List on March 19, pushing the list to 61 members. The field will be narrowed to 25 nominees on April 23 and the five finalists will be announced on May 7 and invited to the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony set for May 28 at the Smithsonian Insitution s National Museum of the American Indian. He opened the year by winning all 10 of his draws against VMI and combined with rookie Joe Varello to win 21 of the 26 draws they took in the first 3 quarters. He won 19 of the 25 draws he took against Lehigh (3.14), tying the record for most wins at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It was also just one off the school record for wins. Dove is already among Navy s top 5 on the career faceoff wins leader board, a list which dates back just 30 years when faceoffs were first documented. Winning 8 of his 14 draws against Boston U. s Sam Talkow (3.28) who was ranked just.001 behind Dove heading into the game, he moved into third on the all-time wins list. With 282 wins, he trails second-place William Wallace ( ) by 31 and is 18 wins shy of becoming only the third player in school history to win 300 faceoffs. He has lost the faceoff battle against the opposition just five times (2014 vs. Georgetown, Colgate, Army, Maryland; 2015 vs. Loyola) during his career (25 gms). Already the program s record holder for faceoff wins (163) and attempts (289) by a freshman, he became Navy s record holder for wins by a sophomore (101) on March 10 when he won 13 of the 16 draws at Lafayette. Eleven days later, he grabbed the attempts by a sophomore record (143) against Colgate. He garnered Second-Team All-Patriot League honors last spring after finishing the year second on Navy s single-season faceoff wins list with 163. Chris Pieczonka set the record of 173 over the course of 16 games in 2004, while Dove played 2 fewer contests. Additionally, Dove is ranked 19th nationally with his 5.73 ground balls per game average. He leads the team with 63 ground balls and stands 13th on Navy s single-season list. The Mids are also among the top 20 in ground balls per game (11th, 32.45), caused turnovers per game (12th, 7.82) and winning percentage (18th, 63.6). Navy is just outside of the top 20 in scoring margin (22nd, +1.55) and shot percentage (27th, 28.9). Navy, who has has struggled on extra-man for a number of years, must solve its issues after finishing the 2014 season 66th out of 67 teams, scoring just 7 goals on 39 opportunities (17.9). After starting the season 0 for 8, the Mids are now 9 of 37 (24.3) and ranked 58th among 69 teams. Navy in the NCAA Rankings (out of 69 Teams) Category Rk Avg. 9 One-Goal Decisions Navy has played 82 one-goal games (of 275) since the start of the 1996 season, winning 34 (41.5) of those contests. Among those 82 games, 29 of them have gone into extra minutes with Navy winning 12 (41.4). Over the last eight seasons (2008-present), 36 of the Mids 11 contests have been decided by one goal and Navy has produced wins in just 15 of those contests. Over the last six seasons (2010-present), the Mids are 9-17 in one-goal affairs. In 2007, Navy played a program-record seven one-goal games, including five that were decided in overtime. Navy was 1-1 in 2012 in one-goal decisions, marking the first time since 1996 that it had not played at least three one-goal games. Navy is 4-1 in one-goal contests this season. The Mids dropped an 8-7 decision to Bucknell (2.21) in their Patriot League opener with the Bison scoring the game-winner with 51 seconds remaining in the contest. However, Navy snapped a five-game losing skid in onegoal decisions when it posted a 7-6 win over #19 Holy Cross (2.28). The Mids dealt #14 Towson an 8-7 triple overtime loss in Annapolis (3.3) and scored a victory against Lehigh (3.14). Navy owned a 4-goal advantage over Colgate midway through the fourth quarter, but the Raiders rallied to close within one, 7-6, by game s end. Navy s One-Goal Games (since 1996) Year Gms. Since the beginning of the 2004 campaign, Navy has lost 34 of its 67 road games (neutral sites not included). Navy has had a losing record on the road in 4 of the last 6 years. The Mids were 2-4 in 2010, 1-6 in 2011, 3-2 in 2012, 0-5 in 2013, 1-6 in 2014 and 3-2 in Under Rick Sowell, Navy is 7-15 on the road. Navy s 7-6 win over #19 Holy Cross on Feb. 28 marked its first win over a ranked team on the road since defeating #12 Colgate, 12-11, on March The Mids won back-to-back road games at Lafayette and at Colgate, marking the first time they have put together consecutive wins on the road since 2012 when the Mids beat Lafayette (12-7), Towson (10-6) and Colgate (12-11) on the road. Navy In Overtime Navy owns an all-time record in overtime contests, including a mark in games at home. 27 of the 40 games have been decided in a single overtime period, however 7 have gone into double overtime, 4 into three extra frames, 1 into four and 1 into six. The Mids snapped a four-game skid in extra-frame games when they defeated #14 Towson, 8-7, in triple overtime on March 3. The Navy-Towson contest is one of 24 games to go into overtime this season, and is tied as the second-longest game in terms of extra frames. The Saint Joseph s vs. Michigan game ended in 9-8 quadruple overtime win by Michigan on March 14. Perhaps no overtime game in school history gained more attention than when Andy Warner etched his name into Naval Academy lore by way of his overtime goal against 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins in 2010, snapping a 36-game losing streak to the Blue Jays. It was the Mids first win over Hopkins since Meanwhile, another overtime thriller saw Navy pull out a 9-8 triple-overtime victory over Colgate in the 2009 Patriot League Tournament Semifinals. Midfielder Joe Lennon scored four goals for the Mids, including the last three. It marked the Mids first overtime win in postseason action, as Navy previously lost NCAA Tournament decisions to Cortland State (2OT) in 1972 and Washington & Lee (3OT) in The Navy win also goes down in the record books as the longest Patriot League Tournament contest. The Mids 8-7 loss against Cornell in 2008 marked the first time in program history that Navy had played an overtime game at a neutral site. Some of those brothers attended the Academy at the same time, like the Looneys (Brendan 04, Steve 06, Billy 07) and the Lennons (Clipper 05, Bobby 09, Joe 10). Others, like Shane ( 09), Pat ( 14) and Brendan ( 17) Durkin, just missed playing alongside one another. Navy has a single set of brothers on this season s squad - Matt ( 17) and Casey ( 18) Rees. Senior Alex Heyward s grandfather, Shannon, is one of only 36 players in program history to be named an All-American at least three times. The elder Heyward garnered All-America honors in 1955, 56 and 57 Third-year attackman T.J. Hanzsche s father, Tom, was a four-year letterwinner for the Mids from who played attack on four NCAA Quarterfinal teams. Junior goalie John Connors is the brother of four-year letterwinner Brendan Connors ( 10), who played on two NCAA Tournament teams and one (2007) of two Navy teams who went undefeated in Patriot League play. Sophomore goalkeeper Connor Wade is the son of two-year Navy lacrosse letterwinner Capt. John Wade ( 90) and nephew of three-year Navy lacrosse letterwinner Tim Andrews ( 88). Matt and Casey Rees father, Cliff ( 88), wasn t a standout on the lacrosse field, but instead played basketball alongside David Robinson and earned a trip to the Elite 8 his Plebe year. Freshman long pole Steve Hincks father, Steven ( 78), garnered Honorable Mention All-America honors as a defenseman for the Mids his senior year. As a freshman he was a member of the Navy team that played in the program s first NCAA Championship Game and was an NCAA Semifinalist the following three seasons. 9

Navy 11 Head Coach Rick Sowell On June 9, 2011, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk introduced Rick Sowell, a man who has been involved with rebuilding programs at Georgetown, Dartmouth, St. John s and Stony Brook, as the Naval Academy s eighth head men s lacrosse coach in its 100- plus year storied history. In his first season at Navy, Sowell directed the Mids to a 6-6 record, including a 3-3 mark in Patriot League action which featured a victory over 12th-ranked Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. It marked Navy s first.500-win season since Navy capped off its season with an 8-2 rout over No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The six-goal victory marked the Mids largest margin of victory in the series since 1965 when Navy scored a 15-6 win over the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, the Class of 2012 became the first class since 1974 to graduate having twice beaten Hopkins. Last season the Mids to put together a 3-5 Patriot League mark and earned their first trip back to the conference postseason tournament since Sowell compiled a (.644) record in five seasons at Stony Brook and was named the America East Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons as he guided the Seawolves to back-to-back America East regular-season titles ( ). The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak to top-10 opponents, as it last defeated a top-10 team on April 3, 2009, when the Mids defeated No. 8 Maryland, In 2010, Sowell led Stony Brook to the program s first America East regular-season title, a school-record 13 wins, a No. 6 national ranking and a 9-7 victory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves were just a game away from advancing to the school s first-ever final four, narrowly losing in to Virginia in the quarterfinals, Stony Brook had four players earn All-America honors, including Kevin Crowley who was the school s first First-Team All-American and was named the USILA Player of the Year. Sowell, who was an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2010 World Championships in England, led Stony Brook to a 9-6 record in 2009 and a final ranking of No. 20 in the country. It marked the school s first end-of-the-season national ranking. Stony Brook finished 4-1 in America East and stood as the regular season co-champions. Prior to Stony Brook, Sowell was tapped to head the rebirth of the St. John s lacrosse program that had been dormant since Sowell had just one season to recruit before the Red Storm took the field in Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth from and revived the Big Green program, taking the team from last place in the Ivy League to first. In his final season at Dartmouth in 2003, Sowell s squad posted an 11-3 record and won the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. It was Dartmouth s first Ivy League title since 1965 and just the third Ivy League title in school history. During the title run, the Big Green upset No. 2 Princeton marking the first time that Dartmouth had won at Princeton since Sowell was also named the NEILA Coach of the Year that season. Sowell s coaching career began at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he helped guide the Shoremen to the NCAA Division III national title game in 1986 and the semifinal round in Sowell was named the 1985 Division III National Midfielder of the Year and was also a two-time All-American. He helped lead Washington College to the Division III national championship game twice. His 45 goals and 14 assists earned him Division III First- Team All-America honors and an invitation to participate in the annual North-South All-Star Game. Sowell graduated from Washington College in 1986 with a bachelor s degree in history. He was inducted into the Washington College Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Potomac Chaper of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in February of 2013.
