1 Raptor Rambles November 22, 2010 Issue 2 Check out our website: Inside this Edition: Team Updates 2 Dragon Rap 3 Face-Off 4 Board bits 5 To submit stories, please contact Shari at or to shari06@telus.net DMHA to Honour Memory of Chris and John Charmont In light of the recent tragedy, the DMHA will honour the memory of two of its own. Chris and John Charmont were members of the EnCana Atom Raptors. Their loss is not only felt by their teammates but by all of Minor Hockey and the community of Drumheller. In their honour, John s #4 jersey will be retired during a special ceremony. The time and date of this ceremony will be announced in the near future. All DMHA teams will also wear a commemorative #4 patch for the remainder of the season. The staffs of Cenovus and EnCana have also set up a trust fund for Terra and Megan Charmont and donations can be made at any ATB branch across the province. Teams have already begun donating proceeds from 50/50 or raffle sales to help out the Charmont family. Donations can also be made to the Make a Wish Foundation in their memory. Drumheller Minor Hockey will also be selling Thoughtful Little Angel pins in memory of Chris & John Charmont. The pins will be available at the arena concession for $7.00 per pin with all proceeds going towards the Charmont Family trust fund. CAHL Report by Norm Fournier This edition is in loving memory of Chris and John Charmont. You will always be our teammates, you will always be Raptors. Hello everyone I had the pleasure of attending the CAHL retiering meeting in Strathmore on Tuesday November 16th. It wasn't too bad this year it only took just over four and a half hours to go through all the teams. I am happy to report that all teams from Drumheller ended up where they belonged and/or where they wanted to be. The only team to move this year was the Novice tier 2 which was granted the move down to Tier 3. I strongly believe this should be a fairly successful year for all teams in Drumheller. Some of you may have new governors, please make sure you check the CAHL website to see if that has changed. If you have any concerns or questions about CAHL please feel free to phone or contact me at any time. Now that the real season has begun here's wishing all the teams a successful and fun season. Norm Fournier CAHL Rep Drumheller Minor Hockey
2 Raptor Rambles Page 2 of 6 Team Updates Thanks to the generosity given to our team at the Strathmore tournament, they are able to make a $1000 donation to the Make a Wish Foundation - Encana Atom Raptors The Encana Atom Raptors played in their first Tournament of the season last weekend. They showed great strength and determination during the 3 day event. With a record of 1-win, 1-tie, and 1-loss, they played in the 3rd and 4th place final. It was a hard felt battle that went to a shoot-out after a 3-3 tie at the end of 3 periods. In the end despite a great performance, the shootout didn t go our way. The team did an amazing job despite the tragic loss they endured to their team. They are an incredible bunch of kids! Thanks to the generosity and compassion that was given to our team at the Strathmore Tournament, they are able to make a $ donation to the Make A Wish Foundation, on behalf of Terra & Megan Charmont. The support of the hockey teams at this tournament was amazing to see and feel. With a new schedule upon us the Encana Atom Raptors are moving forward with optimism and courage throughout the entire season. The Atom Yavis Raptors team coached by Pat Hummel, has had a strong start to the season. Pretiering record consists of 3 wins and 2 losses as well as beating Three Hills in exhibition play. We competed in the Camrose tournament on November weekend losing out in the semi-final Sunday morning against Wetaskawin. Post re-tiering we are sitting with 11 teams in our division consisting of Taber, Cochrane, Didsbury, Lethbridge, Duchess, High River, Okotoks, Indus, Carstairs and Brooks. Next tournament we will be in Red Cliff on the January weekend. If should be a great yet challenging season for our kids! The Hiway 9 PeeWee Raptors are off to a good start! Our coaches, although all new to this role, are doing a wonderful job of teaching the required skills to our kids to develop them into a respectable and talented team. You can see their confidence improving after each practice! The kids, parents and coaches are enjoying the new season and are looking forward to our regular game season. The parents are certainly proud of the improvement already in this season as each game goes by. We are working hard to try to raise funds so our kids can attend more tournaments. We are attending the Three Hills tournament coming up next month and are very much looking forward to that. We are in the process of hosting a tournament in January at the Hussar Arena. Everyone is working hard to ensure a fun filled weekend! We have had quite a bit of response and hope to have everything organized in the near future. Here's to a promising, eventful and fun-filled season and best of luck to all our Drumheller Teams! The Greene Construction PeeWee team is off to a steady start. There was a lot of shuffling in our tier with four teams moving up to tier 1, one team moving down to tier 4 and 3 other teams moving in. All in all, the tier looks very competitive and we look forward to a very exciting season. We are also excited about the prospect of hosting provincials this season. The bid was put in by DMHA last week and we are anxiously waiting to hear if we have been awarded the event. The PeeWee 2 Raptors are anxious to get back on the ice this weekend. With 10 teams in our tier, we have a lot of games ahead of us and we couldn t be more excited! Good luck to everyone, travel safe!
3 Page 3 of 6 Dragon Rap by Dan Price The Dragons wish to extend their deepest condolences to the members and friends of the Charmont family and Drumheller Minor Hockey in light of the recent passing of Chris and John Charmont. The Dragons players, staff and owners, in honour of Chris and John and in support of Terra and Megan, would like to be of service to the Charmont family in some way, and have created two initiatives with this in mind. First, the Dragons have donned a logo, similar to the patch adorning the DMH jerseys, in memory of Chris and John. This logo is in the form of helmet stickers for the players and lapel pins for the coaches. The Dragons will continue to wear this logo for the remainder of the season. Second, the players have created a pledge drive called No Shave For The Brave to honour and raise money for Terra and Megan. On November 18 th, the Dragons players all shaved and agreed not to shave again until the Christmas break. Their gesture is in recognition of Terra and Megan s courage, strength and resilience, and the players are collecting pledges for this initiative with that in mind. All money raised, in addition to the Dragons personal donations, will be donated to the Charmont family trust fund. Drill of the Month by Coach Dan Price Each month in Dragon Rap, the Dragons coaches will also provide a Drill of the Month. If you have any questions about the drills or would generally like to discuss coaching or the game of hockey, please do not hesitate to contact Head Coach Dan Price at (403) DRILL OF THE MONTH November 22, 2010 Pursuit Sprints Objective: Develop Skating & Timing for Gap Control Drill Keys: Defenseman skates backward, forward, backward Defenseman mirrors the Forward; keep in front of you Maintain close distance ( gap ) between Defenseman and Forward, maintain balance, take away time and space

5 Page 5 of 6 Board Bits In conjunction with Hockey Alberta, the DMHA is supporting the Respect in Sport program. The Respect in Sport Parent Program is an effective and informative online training program for parents of active children. This one hour online certification program reinforces a parents role in a child or youth's activities, encouraging positive sport behaviours, and providing insight into the various roles other individuals (such as coaches and officials) play. This program empowers parents to ensure the safety of their children, encourage positive and effective communication, and to enhance a child's fun and camaraderie of the activity. DMHA made this program mandatory for all carded coaches who did not already have their Speak-out certification however we d like to encourage parents to take part in the program as well. To register, you can follow the link on our website to the Hockey Alberta website. There is a small fee for the program however all parents who take the Raptor Rambles program and submit their certification to Shallyn Schinnour will be entered in a draw for Flames tickets to an upcoming game. For more information on game dates and submission deadlines, contact Shallyn at s_schinnour@hotmail.com The DMHA board would also like to thank all the teams who have generously made donations to the Charmont Family Trust Fund and to all of those who helped with food donations for the funeral last Saturday. Finally, the board would like to remind everyone to submit your completed volunteer hours to Janet Schrock and/or Hansine Kostelecky to receive a refund on your volunteer fee. If you have a question for the board, please contact Shari at shari@canalta.com Rumblings round the Arena Each month Raptor Rambles will highlight a hot topic around the arena.
