Continue straight off the exit ramp onto Morrissey Boulevard for approximately one mile. Turn right into the campus and follow the driveway to the parking areas. From the North Interstate 93 South (Southeast Expressway) to exit 15, Columbia Road/JFK Library/UMass. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp and proceed towards the rotary. Turn right the first opportunity out of the rotary and remain in the right lane descending the ramp onto Morrissey Boulevard. Stay to the right of the curb at the bottom of the ramp and in the left lane. The first traffic light is in front of The Boston Globe plant. At the second traffic light, turn left into the campus and follow the driveway to the parking areas. From the West Interstate 90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) to Interstate 93 South (Southeast Expressway). Follow directions from North as indicated above. 1

4 2002 Season COACHING STAFF Rick Peterson Head Coach Babson 83 First Season Andrew Reed Assistant Coach Salisbury 04 First Season Rick Peterson becomes the seventh Head Coach in UMass Boston history. The Massachusetts native has been very successful in the coaching arena, having led Marshfield High School to a combined record in the 2007 and 2008 campaigns, including a Division 1 semifinals appearance in Peterson wasted no time in making a name for himself, leading the Rams to a 15-4 record and was selected as the Atlantic Coast League s Coach of the Year in Prior to his appointment as Marshfield s Head Coach, he served as the Freshman Coach in 2005 and led the squad to a 21-1 mark, before directing the Junior Varsity team to a 19-1 record the next season. Peterson has been extremely active in youth lacrosse, having been the Head Coach of the Eastern Massachusetts Junior Minutemen in the U-19 league and leading the Massachusetts AAU unit to a Silver Medal in the AAU Junior Olympics in Andrew Reed joins the UMass Boston coaching staff and brings a career experience that has known nothing but winning with him. A Duxbury, Massachusetts native, Reed played his college lacrosse with national powerhouse Salisbury University. The midfielder helped the Sea Gulls to a combined record of 52-6 in three seasons, including a pair of national championships in 2003 and 2004 and will look to help instill that winning attitude into the UMass Boston players. Prior to his collegiate career, Reed was a High School All-American at Duxbury High School. He graduated from Salisbury University in Before making his mark on the coaching scene, Peterson was a four-year standout at Babson College and graduated from the school in 1983 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, marketing and communications. Peterson currently resides in Marshfield, MA with his wife Susan and daughter Lindsay. 2 UMB Lacrosse

5 OUTLOOK UMass Boston faces a lot of challenges in. A new Head Coach, many new players and a new beginning. The Beacons will play hard for 60 minutes and give their opponents all they can handle, while becoming a more cohesive unit as they jell this season. Despite limited numbers, UMass Boston features a number of highly skilled players and should only get better as the season goes on. The Beacons attack will not be short on experience with some very talented returners keying the effort. Senior Peter Kovach (Cohasset, MA) has been among the team s top scorers the past two seasons and will be counted on to be a big part of the offense again. He tallied nine goals a year ago and will start at left side attack, while sophomore John Canty (Milton, MA) returns after a phenomenal freshman campaign that saw him lead UMass Boston in goals and points. The three-time Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, ranked among the LEC s top 10 in points and assists per game and should be the Beacons top player and scorer. He will also take a good number of faceoffs for UMB. Junior Aaron Pollock (Belmont, MA) returns to the attack after seeing action in goal last season. Selected as a Captain this year, he will be counted on as one of the team s top scorers. He netted three goals in 12 contests as a freshman. Classmate Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, NJ) will also contribute on the attack as a set-up man. He has excellent stick skills and has been a good goal scorer during his career as well, including 10 tallies last seasons. Junior Junior Aaron Pollock was very good in goal last year, but returns to attack for transfer Al Craven (Milton, MA) will also be counted on to add to the team s offensive punch from the midfield. A strong player with the hardest shot on the team, he should also be one of UMass Boston s top scorers. Junior Tim Boyle (Dorchester, MA) returns in the midfield and will contribute on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field, while senior Robert Schwartz (Philadelphia, PA) will see a lot of time with a long stick in the midfield as well as in the defensive zone. He s an outstanding player, who has shown real improvement during his career. The Beacons also have a group of players in their midfield, who are just great athletes and should solidify the middle of the field for UMass Boston. Sophomore Roman Ricci (Duxbury, MA) comes from a great high school program and has a high lacrosse IQ. He should see action on the Beacons second line and will also rotate in to take faceoffs, while freshman Hudson Henriques (Saugus, MA) has already seen action in the fall with Wentworth Institute of Technology before his transfer to UMass Boston. He has good stick skills and excellent speed and will vie for time in the midfield and attack as well as faceoffs. Freshman Eric Collins (Somerville, MA) was a four-year letterwinner at Matignon High School and should contribute in the midfield for the Beacons. Senior Rocco Dabecco (South Park, PA) and freshman Devin Hutchinson (Port Huron, MI) will make the transition from the ice to the grass. They are both excellent athletes, having played hockey for UMass Boston, but will now look for time in the defensive midfield. Hutchinson could also drop back to play defense as well. Juniors Ryan Pollock (Chandler, AZ) and John Clark (Quincy, MA) will both add to the midfield depth as very coachable athletes. The Beacons defense is comprised of a tight-knit trio, which will be among the region s most physically imposing units. The defense is anchored by two-year Captain Matt Dunn (Milton, MA), who has been among the team s groundball leaders throughout his career, averaging nearly 50 a season. The 6 2, 240-pound Dunn is an excellent defender, who is the heart and soul of the team. Not only that, but his strong physical presence will be a huge key for the defense. Junior Patrick McDonagh (Dorchester, MA) also provides an imposing presence on the defensive side of the ball at 6 4, 210 pounds. He has improved greatly since picking up the sport a year ago and understands the game well to earn him a starting role once again this season. Classmate Jared Doherty (Conway, NH) gives opponents no relief with a 6 4, 230-pound frame and will help lead UMass Boston as a captain. He s a great athlete, who is versatile and could see action in the offensive midfield as well. Freshman Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) and sophomore Matt Gradin (Milton, MA) will both challenge for the starting goalie spot. Fitti comes from a tremendous program and is an excellent athlete, coming off a season with the Beacons hockey squad. Gradin was a four-year letterwinner at Lawrence Academy and will look to make an impact at the collegiate level. UMB Lacrosse 3

17 THE LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE The Little East Conference officially began on April 28, 1986 as a playing conference for men s and women s basketball among six New England institutions: Eastern Connecticut State University, Plymouth State College, Rhode Island College, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (formerly Southeastern Massachusetts University), the University of Massachusetts Boston and the University of Southern Maine. From the beginning the conference was officially recognized by the NCAA. The number of sports contested in the conference has grown to include men s and women s soccer, baseball, men s and women s cross country, men s and women s indoor track, men s and women s outdoor track, men s and women s lacrosse, softball, men s and women s tennis, volleyball and field hockey, as well as the original men s and women s basketball. The number of participating institutions rose to seven with the addition of Western Connecticut State University in and then to eight for the year as Keene State College joined. Along with planning for the inclusion of new sports within the conference, the LEC s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field programs are participating in an innovative joint program with the MASCAC conference to determine New England Alliance championships. Events contested are scored within each conference and for the Alliance as well. The LEC recognizes the advantages of combining with other conferences which allows teams with lower numbers of participants to join forces and compete at a full-team level. The Beacons win the Colonial Division championship with an 8-0 record and advance to the semifi nals of the ECAC tournament Midfi elder David Taylor becomes the second UMass Boston player to participate in the USILA North-South national all-star game Attackman Jamie Mulroney sets New England career records with 211 goals and 350 points and is selected for the USILA North-South national all-star game. Mulroney and defenseman Dan Chouinard are named to the NEILA All-New England team The Beacons fi nish the season having allowed the fewest goals of any team in the nation and at 12-1, have the fi fth-best record in the country. Starting out in a downtown Boston location, the university moved to its current 175-acre campus on the Columbia Point peninsula in 1974 and merged with Boston State College in A commuter school, UMass Boston is nationally recognized as a model of excellence for urban universities. Sports Medicine Quite simply, the sports medicine center at UMass Boston is one of the best in the area. It combines the best facility with the best people -- all with the goal of keeping Beacon student-athletes healthy. The sports medicine room falls under the direction of head athletic trainer Ed Perkins, a UMass Boston graduate and former athlete with the Beacons. Before taking over at UMB, Ed worked with the nationally ranked men s basketball team at Temple University before returning to Division III athletics at MIT and at Bridgewater State College. Shannon Soares, a certified athletic trainer in her own right, is the university s assistant athletic trainer. Shannon s credentials include a stint with Dennis-Yarmouth High School as its head athletic trainer and two summers working with top major league baseball prospects in the prestigious Cape Cod League. What that means to you is that when you become a member of the Beacons, you are in the safest environment possible. Whether it be injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, or rehabilitation, the training staff at UMass Boston is looking out for you. Before you are eligible for competition, you will be required to undergo a thorough physical examination. You will be monitored throughout the training phase and competitive season. And the training staff works closely with your head coach to make your participation in Beacon athletics as safe as it can be. To ensure quality individual care, the training staff regularly acquires the latest and most effective modalities. The sports medicine center at UMass Boston is equipped with a four-channel electrical stimulation with combination ultrasound unit, a paraffin bath, two hydrocollator units, a Jobst compression unit and a whirlpool bath. Strength & Conditioning The University of Massachusetts Boston is one of the few NCAA III schools in the country to offer a year round strength and conditioning program. The varsity weight room is designed to improve all areas of athletic performance for all sports. The strength and conditioning coach is a certified professional. The focus is to educate and train athletes on how to properly execute exercises that will allow them to be more efficient with the sports specific movements and enable them to participate with a reduced chance of injury. Our goal is to produce athletes who are faster, stronger and more powerful, in order for them to compete at their highest level.

29 CLARK ATHLETIC CENTER The student athlete at UMass Boston has a wealth of athletic and recreational facilities available within the confines of the Clark Athletic Center. Boston Youth Games, the Boston Housing Authority Jamboree, the Bay State Games and MIAA state tournament games in soccer, ice hockey and basketball. The athletic center has served as the home of the Beacon basketball program since its completion in Named for Catherine Forbes Clark, a former trustee of the University of Massachusetts system and prominent Dorchester civic leader, the Clark Athletic Center emulates its namesake by serving the University community as well as area residents throughout the year. Considered one of the finest athletic and recreational facilities in Greater Boston, the complex accommodates the school s 18 intercollegiate sports and extensive intramural program. The Center s building houses a main gymnasium, which includes a 3,500-seat basketball arena along with three auxiliary basketball courts and two volleyball courts, a 1,000- seat ice rink, and an Olympic-size swimming pool with a high-dive area, six 25-yard lanes and an observation deck. A weight room, creative and combative rooms and a sports medicine area round out the interior of the structure. Outside the building, UMass Boston boasts an eight-lane 400-meter track, eight tennis courts, a softball diamond and two multipurpose fields primarily used for soccer and lacrosse. The outdoor facilities also include a boathouse and dock for the sailing program as well as several recreational fields. The athletic center became the new home of the Boston Shootout, the premier high school basketball tournament in the nation, in 1997 and has served as a workout facility for the Boston Celtics and the 2000 McDonald s All- American High School Basketball team, while also serving as the site of the Sprite Slam Jam. During the summer of 1999, the center began hosting the Shaw s Summer Pro League, featuring current and future stars of the NBA. The center also hosts the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs during the NBA season, serving as a practice site for both of those teams on their visits to Boston. The Clark Athletic Center saw its most excitement for 2000 in just one night when on October 3rd, the University hosted the first United States Presidential Debate of When the parties finally agreed to the Boston debate, the event was suddenly only two weeks away. In that time frame the Clark Athletic Center had to be converted into a debate hall and the adjacent hockey rink into a media center, replete with red carpet, approximately 700 phones, more than 70 televisions, and accommodations for almost 1,600 media representatives from around the world. The complex has also doubled as a concert venue, hosting multiple-grammy winning artist Kanye West in 2006 as well as the O Jays and Common in UMass Boston also boasts one of the finest personal fitness facilities in the area in the Beacon Fitness Center. The state-of-the-art recreational area provides students, faculty and staff with modern equipment in a clean environment. The fitness center offers cardiovascular machines, nautilus and free weights, squash and racquetball courts, a walking track and aerobics. In addition to extensive use by the intercollegiate and intramural programs, the Clark Athletic Center serves as the site for numerous community activities. Included in the list of community activities are a variety of events for both youth and the physically challenged. UMass Boston hosts the National Youth Sports Program, an NCAAsponsored summer camp for inner-city youth, as well as the Dana Barros Basketball Camp, the All Dorchester Sports League, the UMB Lacrosse 27

30 2002 Season UMB IN THE COMMUNITY Intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and recreation for students, staff and faculty are the primary programs of the UMass Boston Department of Athletics. The department offers 14 varsity sports and is a member of the NCAA s Division III. UMass Boston has teams competing in the ECAC, the Little East Conference and ECAC East Ice Hockey. Ninetythree Beacons in seven sports have been named All-Americans. The women s indoor and outdoor track and field teams had an outstanding record of achievement, including four NCAA Team Championships and 37 individual NCAA Championships. But the Department of Athletics has another important concern as well--service to the community. Whether it s complimentary use of the University s athletic facilities, coaches and student athletes sports clinics for youth groups, or holiday visits to area hospitals, UMass Boston Athletics is in the forefront of serving area neighborhoods and communities throughout the state. More than 150 school, charitable, government and private organizations use UMass Boston athletic facilities each year at little or no cost. Over 2,500 people visit our athletic facilities each year, as participants or spectators. UMass Boston s indoor and outdoor athletic facilities are in use by visitors for over 2100 hours each year. In 2007 the National Consortium for Academics and Sports named the Department of Athletics at UMass Boston as # 1 in the country among Division III institutions and seventh overall for Community Service. UMass Boston was named Honorable Mention by the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators/Jostens in the category of An Array of Projects or Activities in UMass Boston is in a unique position as the only public university in the City of Boston. For that reason, the University has a responsibility above and beyond its mission to provide a superior higher education at moderate cost to the people of the metropolitan area. Because of its urban environment and its spacious, coastline location, the University can reach out to its neighbors and provide first rate facilities for healthy, stimulating sports and recreational activities. National Consortium for Academics and Sports member institutions develop Outreach and Community Service programs with current student-athletes and former student-athletes from the Degree Completion Program. Over the last 22 years, NCAS member institutions, through their outreach and community service programs, have reached more than 16.5 million youth nationwide with messages about violence prevention, gender sensitivity, conflict resolution, the importance of academics and athletics, staying in school, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and much more. Since 1985, NCAS student-athletes have given over 18 million hours of community service. There is no one way to conduct school outreach programs. It is clear from the great work done by NCAS members that there are many ways to provide quality programs. Beacon Dash Cross Country teams sponsor and run the event with proceeds going to the Early Learning Center Bring Your Child to Work Day Womens basketball ran a clinic for 30 kids along with arts and crafts

31 OPPORTUNITIES FOR ATHLETES As a student athlete at UMass Boston you will have unique opportunities to represent the University on a national level and in national programs. NCAA CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS The school year marked the department s first year as a member of the NCAA s CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Presently, 323 institutions and six conference offices now participate in this NCAA supported life skills program. The NCAA mission of CHAMPS/Life Skills is committed to a comprehensive program that provides educational experience and services in order to develop well balanced lifestyles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program will be presented this year at UMB through the development of workshops/guest speakers that address identified life skill needs in the five commitment areas of this program. As part of our membership in CHAMPS/Life Skills, each year one of four student athlete nominees will attend the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference. SAAC MEMBERS STUDENT ATHLETE ADVISORY COUNCIL The Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is comprised of student athlete representatives from each of UMass Boston s teams. The purpose of the organization is to promote all UMB sports and provide student athletes an opportunity to impact those issues that affect their daily lives. SAAC is the student athlete s voice and their vehicle to implement new ideas and influence positive change to enhance the studentathlete experience at UMass Boston. Members of each team will nominate and select an eligible student athlete to represent their sport on the SAAC. An alternate will also be selected, in the event that the designated representative cannot attend a meeting. It is expected that each team will be represented at every scheduled meeting/event. Throughout the year, student athletes are encouraged to communicate ideas and concerns to the respective representative of their sport. 33 COLLEGE DEGREE PROGRAMS Five Colleges to Choose From When you apply, you ll be seeking admission to one of five UMass Boston college that conduct degree programs for undergraduates. The colleges are briefly described here. Your choice of a college means that you ll be expected to complete a major offered by your college, but it doesn t limit you to courses within your college. For example, science students routinely take liberal arts courses, and vice versa, while both liberal arts and science students can arrange to minor in management.
