1 CARDINAL CONNECTION Friday, December 9, 2016 EVENTS TODAY AND THE WEEKEND December 9th Time Event Location Dismiss Leave Return Wrestling: Varsity 4:30pm West Central Tourney WCA 3:30pm 8:00pm December 10th Time Event Location Dismiss Leave Return Wrestling: Varsity 9:30am West Central Tourney WCA 6:30am 7:00pm Hockey: Girls Varsity 7:00pm Rogers Rogers Arena 3:30pm 11:00pm RESULTS FROM YESTERDAY WRESTLING Alexandria 24 Brainerd 55 Brainerd came to town last night ready to wrestle and the final score of the wrestling match was evidence that the Cardinals have work to do to prepare for other Central Lakes matches. This team will step up and put in the work to elevate their level of competition. The Cardinals were without a few starters in the lineup and we know that if we put the time in the practice room and continue to improve with our young squad that we can compete in the CLC. Jay Kohls stepped up big time last night with an impressive pin of his Brainerd opponent. Ben bogart continued his undefeated season, Deryk Neu has one loss and Quintin Kluver Longfellow and Ryan Borris have just two losses on the season to lead this team into the West Central Tournament tomorrow in Barrett. Alexandria vs Brainerd Dual Meet Summary 106 Ostrowski, Cole (B) defeated Borris, Ryan (A) {Dec 10-4} 113 Orsburn, Chad (B) defeated Lemm, Jeris (A) {Fall 6:20} 120 Kubesh, Cole (B) defeated Sparr, AJ (A) {Fall 1:48} 126 Patnode, Kyle (B) defeated Snitker, Wyatt (A) {Fall 2:06} 132 Bogart, Ben (A) defeated Patnode, Brad (B) {Fall 2:05} 138 Peterson, Tucker (B) defeated Vance, James (A) {Fall 0: Boran, Max (B) defeated Botz, Trappier (A) {Fall 4:08} 152 Schlosser, Andy (B) defeated Runge, Logan (A) {Maj Dec 13-5} 160 Miller, Chance (B) defeated Kleindl, Tyler (A) {Fall 6:05} 170 Hardy, Colton (B) defeated Brezina, Joseph (A) {Fall 0:36} 182 Kohls, Jay (Alexandria) defeated Gibson, Morgan (B){Fall 2:02} 195 Theodore, Logan (B) defeated Forfeit, (A) {Forfeit} 220 Kluver-Longfellow, Quintin (A) defeated Derosier, Fletcher (B) {Fall1:33} 285 Neu, Deryk (A) defeated, Forfeit (B) {Forfeit} GIRLS BASKETBALL VARSITY Alexandria 82 St Cloud Apollo 27 The Lady Cards jumped back in conference play hitting the road to take on the Eagles. We were focused from the opening tip as we swarmed the Eagles with defensive pressure that was relentless, concentrating on
2 their sharp shooter Lariah Washington. We locked down on defense, ran the floor and executed offensively to cruise to a halftime lead. We came out in the second half with more of the same... tough, hard nosed defense, running the floor, unselfish team play, and playing fast. The Cards subbed early and often as all the Lady Cards saw minutes contributing to the win. Scoring was paced by Macy Hatlestad 26, Kayla Feldhake 16, Kendall Kohler 13, Kiyana Miller 8, Courtney Gould 7, Kelby Olson-Rodel and Mac Duwenhoegger 3, 2 for Emma Zeigler, Maggie Slagle and Emma Schmidt. Sophomore Kaye Paschka did not score but solidified herself as a lockdown defender as she harassed and frustrated Apollo star, Washington. Sarah Frederick, Kara Thomson, Ella Grove and Lauren Stockmoe also were solid in the contest. Assists were dished out by Macy Hatlestad with 5 and Kendall Kohler and Kelby Olson- Rodel with 3 each. Steals were paced by Olson - Rodel and Kaye Paschka with 4 each. The boards were controlled by Feldhake and Hatlestad with 7 and Duwenhoegger ripping down 6. Solid team win for the Lady Cards on the road ups our season record to 3-1 overall and 2-0 on the CLC. Next action is on the road next week to Fergus and DL. Go Cards! Senior Guard Macy Hatlestad hit her 1000 career point on a free throw early in the game. Congrats to Macy!! Top 20 Thinkers and Teams know that their positive attitudes, tremendous work ethic are all STAR QUALITIES that lead to the desired result. Bottom 80 Thinkers and Teams look for the easy way out, cut corners and play the Blame Game when things do not go well or they get the desired result. GIRLS BASKETBALL JV Alexandria 64 Apollo 22 The Alexandria Cardinals went to St. Cloud to take on Apollo Thursday night. From the tip the Cardinals came out aggressive and were attacking the hoop on offense and flying all over the court with their full court pressure on defense. Matie Wirtjes, Taylor Partington, and Ella Grove did a great job attacking the hoop on offense. Emily Jones and Emily Aker were able to beat up the Eagles on the boards and were able to dominate the inside with their post moves. Alexandria was able to jump to a lead at halftime. The
3 second half the Cardinals focused on applying half court pressure defense and continuing to play smart and execute on offense. Alexandria was also able to have 13 different players notch their name in the scoring column. It was an impressive team victory for the Cardinals JV where all Cards contributed with balancing scoring and suffocating defense. The win puts the Cardinals record to 3-1 on the year. GIRLS BASKETBALL 9 TH GRADE Alexandria 53 Apollo 35 The 9th grade girls soared to St. Cloud on Thursday to take on the Eagles of Apollo, swooping in and snatching another W from the water. Once the game began, it was clear that it was going to be a rough and tumble game on both sides of the ball. The girls clawed their way to a lead at half, despite being uncharacteristically cold from the floor and the line. Nonetheless, the girls held a point lead most of the game and carried it into the second half. Once there, the girls turned it on and buckets began to fall. The girls played aggressively on defense, which helped hold the Eagles to 35 total points. The Squad travels to Fergus Falls on Tuesday to take on the Otters. BOYS HOCKEY VARSITY St. Cloud 5 Alexandria 5 (OT) The Cardinals hosted St. Cloud last night to open the home portion of their schedule. Three periods, and an overtime session, were not enough to decide an outcome, and the game ended in a 5-5 (OT) tie. With an electric atmosphere, and a big crowd on hand, the Cards came out a little too amped up and could not settle into the flow of the game. As a result St. Cloud led 2-0 after one period. The Cards found their speed and intensity in the second period and scored five goals to go into the second period intermission leading 5-4. Ben Doherty ignited the scoring outburst when he fired a shot just under the short-side cross bar to give the jump start Alexandria needed. Mack Strong had a big night again and scored the next two of his three goals on the evening to tie the game at three. Derek Berning scored the next Card's goal on a breakaway, receiving a nice pass from Derek Dropik. Mack Strong rounded out the second period scoring, and completed his hat trick, to push the score to 5-4 Alexandria. St. Cloud scored at 10:05 of the third period to tie the game, and sent it into overtime. Both teams exchanged quality scoring chances in overtime but the goalies stood tall resulting in a 5-5 tie. Derek Dropik (2) Wade Smith, Ben Doherty (2) Jack Westlund, and Jack Powell all assisted on Cardinal scoring. Mack Strong had an excellent night and was named Player of the Game. Bailey Rosch looked good in net, in his first varsity start. The Cardinals (1-0-1 conference) travel to St. Cloud next Tuesday to take on the Crusaders. BOYS HOCKEY JV Alexandria 6 St. Cloud 1 The JV Cards opened their home opener on a double header night with the girls. Playing in the "slightly colder" rink of the West Rink at the RCC didn't seem to slow the boys down! Opening the scoring for Alex was Wosepka from Peterson with 5:49 left of the first period. Before the close of the first Blake Hoelscher slammed in a rebound from the point from Kopp. After killing off a five minute checking from behind, the JV Cards end the first period up 2-0. Going into the second period about half way through, Hoelscher got his second of the night with less than 20 seconds left, after a St. Cloud turnover on their own blue line. Before the close of the second, Loken took the puck on his own which somehow found the back of the net as he drove the net with a defender close on him. Before the end of the second, the JV Cards had to kill off yet another 5 minute penalty. Alexandria had one slip-up as the D got caught pinching and gave up a breakaway which saw St. Cloud beat Goaltender Aaron, Randazzo, scoring their first of the game with about 1:30 left in the period. Into the final period of the game, the score was 4-1 Alexandria. The both of the final two goals of the game came from Alex Jost. The first was off a three shot rebound from Paul Schwartz and his second was unassisted as he walked off the halfboards and beat the goalie. The game was split between two goaltenders, Rendazzo and Boline, both of which had some great saves.
4 The JV Cards are now 3-0 on the season as they are on the road this coming week. Tuesday at the MAC vs St. Cloud Cathedral and Thursday at Fergus Falls. Let s keep it rolling boys! GIRLS HOCKEY VARSITY St. Cloud 2 Alexandria 1 The lady cards played a St. Cloud team tonight that came ready to play right out of the gates. Despite losing 2-1, goaltender Sarah Finley was the key player for the Cardinals, as she kept her teammates in the game and making some key saves. The cards got off to a slow start and although they came back fighting in the 3rd with getting a shorthanded goal from McKenna Ellingson assisted by Kristin Trosvig, the comeback came up short. We learned that a sense of urgency must be consistently present throughout the entire game. Cards are back on the ice Saturday night in Rogers. Due to the fact that AAHS interacts with many business partners and we have many speakers set up to come into the classrooms, the A & B Day schedule is set and remains the same regardless of snow days. For example, Monday, November 21 st was scheduled to be a B Day. AAHS was closed on Friday, November 18 th due to the snowstorm and it was an A Day. Therefore, Monday, November 21 st remained a B Day. If we have a number of snow days and they all happen to be on A Days (or all on B Days), then administration will re-evaluate and may change the AB schedule near the end of each semester to make sure students are receiving the same number of A & B Days. You will be informed if the AB schedule changes near the end of the semester.
