RESULTS FROM YESTERDAY ONE ACT PLAY STUDENTS ON TO STATE The 8AA Minnesota State High School League one act play section finals were held in the AAHS PAC last night. Alexandria's play, The Cripple of Inishmaan, was crowned first from a field of six area plays, granting Alexandria students a spot in the state one act play festival on February at the O'Shaughnessy Auditorium at St. Catherine's University. The Cripple of Inishmaan, by Martin McDonagh, is the story of a teenage boy with polio in 1930s Ireland who dreams of being a film star in Hollywood. A group of three judges awarded Alexandria first place, calling the play "simply very fine theatre" and "excellent and engaging storytelling." Leading Alexandria's team on stage were senior Jude Pelowski, juniors Benjamin Long, Kylee Johnson, and Claire Wilmesmeier, and sophomores Ben Dirck, Jackson Grove, Sidney Enninga, and Levi Lotti. Crew members are Taryn Schmidt, Lauren Russell, Derek Schweich, Brycen Vilmain, Joe Howson, Maggie Pfeffer, Hope Burnham, Ki Blaser, Makia Krippner, Hannah Rinicker, and Winston Anderson. Also contributing were Jackson Chell, Rachel Meyer, Henri Santelman, and Emily Prestby.
Jude Pelowski, Jackson Grove, Claire Wilmesmeier, Sidney Enninga, Kylee Johnson, Benjamin Long, Ben Dirck, and Levi Lotti BOYS HOCKEY - VARSITY Cathedral 4 Alexandria 0 The Cardinal Boys' hockey team hosted St.Cloud Cathedral last night at the RCC. The Crusaders proved to be too much as they skated away with a 4-0 win. St.Cloud led 1-0 after one period and 3-0 after two. Both teams went 0-3 on the powerplay. St.Cloud outshot the Cards Jack Nettleton played well in goal making some nice glove saves. Alexandria competed hard all three periods but just could not convert on some quality scoring chances. Alexandria (6-6-1 conf.) travels to Prairie Center tonight for a section game. BOYS HOCKEY - JV Alexandria 2 St. Cloud Cathedral 3 JV Cards were one game of the four game night at the RCC last night. The game was a tight the whole night. As the opening period came to a close the score was 0-0 and stayed this way until about 4 minutes left in the second period when Nic VanOrsdel scored with the assist going to Gunvalson and Kopp. Cathedral knew that they hadn't played a close game to go down a goal so less than a minute later, they scored a goal of the own to make it a 1-1 game. Before the close of the second period they got another to put the home team down 2-1. Early in the third period Ryker Treat slapped at the puck in a scrum in from of the net and it lobbed over the goalies pads into the back of the net to make the score 2-2. The rest of the period saw both teams get several good chances but it was ultimately St. Cloud that came away with the win as they put the puck past netminder, Jackson Boline. The goal came from a scrum in front of the net and found its way past the goal line with 0.8 seconds left to go before the game went to overtime. Overall it was a good hard fought game by both sides. The JV Cards have off tonight as the Varsity boys travel to Sauk Centre. The JV Cards return to the ice when they
travel to a rescheduled St. Cloud Tech game down at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The team falls to a record of with two games remaining. GIRLS HOCKEY VARSITY Alexandria 0 St. Cloud Ice Breakers 1 Final regular season games end with a 1-0 loss to the whole town of St. Cloud and some of the surrounding area making up the IceBreakers. The lone goal game in the 2nd period just as we killed off a penalty. Final regular season record , with a 6-5 record at home and a record away or at a neutral site. The cards ended up 3rd in the CLC, but #1 in Section 6A. Our first post season game will be on Tuesday versus Northern Lakes who beat Willmar 4-2 yesterday. Please come out and provide the energy these girls need to make their run. BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING - VARSITY Alexandria 99 Willmar 82 Our Alexandria Cardinals tangled feathers with the birds from down south. The Red Bird Racers beat the Willmar Cardinals by a final score of 99 to 82. Patrick Chromey was a double event winner, with a winning 1:58 and 5:21 in the 2 and 5 Free this evening. D Anthony Moorer and Zach Dummer went 1-2 in the 200 IM, Moorer coming in at a 2:19. Alex Diving was in great shape tonight going Brady Wolkow stepped out of retirement for one night and claimed the victory with a 257. Wolkow had knee surgery less than a year a half ago and last dove as a freshmen. Henri Santelman and Preston Bowden both dove well over 200. Luke Houska dropped 6 seconds in his 100 fly and won the event with a 1:00. Houska, P. Chromey, Wolkow, and N. Chromey swam to first place in the 2 free relay with a 1:36. Wolkow competed in his second individual event, the 100 backstroke, and won that event with a sub-minute backstroke. BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING JV Alexandria 97 Willmar 54 Our JV Alexandria Cardinals, had a nice meet. Some of the boys were on a drop taper and saw plenty of personal bests all-around. Donny Helfrich won his first high school event in the 200 Free, coming in a 2:24. Devin Roering dropped nearly 4 seconds in the 2 IM and came in first with a 2:56. Devan Swerman picked up his second jv victory of season with a season best, 122. Josh Brezina had a nice race, winning the 100 Freestyle with a 1:03. Adam Zimmerman swam a personal best in his 500 freestyle and won with a 6:18. John Wimmer looked very smooth and fast in the 100 breast and won the event in a 1:22. The 400 Free Relay picked up the last victory in the evening and won in a 4:28. Garret Maras, Swerman, Helfrich, and Jaymeson Wolkow teamed up for the Alexandria A. The real story of the evening is the event that followed the meet where everyone won. Families came together and enjoyed being a part of the Cardinal Family. A special thank you to the parents and families that stuck around to enjoy the fantastic night. Special notes on the evening were school record holder, and NCAA All- American Aaron Rooney gave the crowd a show, Coach Kluver won the 50 freestyle, and the Storhaug Family brought flames to the water in two events. In the final event of the evening, the Olson and Jabas Family teamed up for the 100 Family Freestyle Relay Victory. Senior Captain Chad Blank summarized it best, "Live in the moment. This team has, and will always be unlike any other, so enjoy making the memories when you can." The Cardinals are now off until next Saturday, when they conclude their CLC schedule regular season with the CLC Championship at St. Cloud Tech. Go Cards! WRESTLING Alex 30 Brainerd 35 Another night of a close call for the Cardinal wrestling team. The team seems to be right there with the better teams in the CLC and/or Section competition but cannot seem to put together a total team match to come up with a win. It isn t for lack of effort of preparation as our team is ready to battle with the best, but for some reason or another we are not getting all team members to compete to the best of their ability on the same night. We had chances where we had our Brainerd opponent on their backs and very nearly pinned but couldn t get the call- only to later in the match get pinned. Or be up early in the match only to allow the Brainerd opponent creep back in the match, gain confidence and then pull out an upset win in overtime. This team has
the leadership that will keep the team together, continue to work for the common goal and strive to bring it all together for the Section events later this month. Final Score: 30 Alex 35 Brainerd 106 Patnode, Brad (B) defeated Kremer, Adam (A) {Maj Dec 16-5} 113 Patnode, Kyle (B) defeated Snitker, Wyatt (A) {Fall 1:18} 120 Kremer, Mitch (A) defeated Kubesh, Cole (B) {Dec 5-4} 126 Bogart, Ben (A) defeated Kramer, Braden (B) {Dec 6-2} 132 Johnson, Adam (A) defeated Breun, Drew (B) {Dec 9-5} 138 Boran, Max (B) defeated Chamberlin, Titus (A) {Fall 6:07} 145 Robinson, Drew (B) defeated Runge, Logan (A) {Maj Dec 11-3} 152 Schlosser, Andy (B) defeated Brezina, Joseph (A) {Fall 3:15} 160 Cole, Chandler (A) defeated Hardy, Colton (B) {Dec 5-3} 170 Wohl, CJ (B) defeated Kleindl, Tyler (A) {Fall 5:33} 182 Kohls, Jay (A) defeated Gibson, Morgan (B) {Fall 1:36} 195 Theodore, Logan (B) defeated Kluver-Longfellow, Quintin (A) {Dec 9-7(OT)} 220 Somerville, Mac (A) defeated DeRosier, Fletcher (B) {Fall 5:52} BOYS BASKETBALL VARSITY Alexandria 71 Apollo 54 Alexandria Boys Basketball team defeated the St. Cloud Apollo Eagles on Thursday night, The Cards utilized 2 keys runs, one in each half, to gain momentum and take control of the game. Some great individual and team defensive efforts, efficient offense, and several key hustle plays sparked Alexandria throughout the night. Apollo made a few runs of their own, but the Cards were able to make timely plays on each end of the floor to halt the Eagles run or ignite their own run. BOYS BASKETBALL JV Alexandria 60 St. Cloud Apollo 49 The Cardinals JV Basketball Teams got a win at home on Thursday, after a 2 week lay-off. The Cards took control of the game early on the heels of unselfish basketball and solid defense. The Cards were able to get the Eagles in transition to build a lead heading into the locker room. In the second half the Cards would extend their lead to as much as 20, but missed free-throws and turned the ball over to allow the Eagles to shrink the lead late in the game. It was a solid team win for the Cards, who will start a 4-game week on Monday when they head to Sartell. BOYS BASKETBALL B SQUAD Alexandria 71 SC Apollo 43 The Alexandria B squad continued to play good ball Thursday night as they rolled to an easy victory against a team that they beat by only 5 back in December. We jumped to an early lead and never looked back going into the half up 14. The second half was more of the same as our lead hit 33 points at one time. We now become road warriors as we travel to Bemidji Saturday, Sartell Monday and Moorhead Tuesday. MORE RESULTS FROM WEDNESDAY BAND SOLO ENSEMBLE It was a great day in Sartell for Solo and Ensemble Contest. The AAHS Band Department brought 46 different events to the day long contest. After a long day, Alexandria came home with 25 Excellent score recipients and 15 Superior(top mark possible) score recipients. We had many Seniors performing in their last Solo and Ensemble Contest who earned Superior ratings - including Matthew Bittmann on Baritone Sax, Nora Merk on
Trumpet, and Tiffanie Sell on Trumpet. Alexandria's Jazz I ensemble also brought home a Superior score and an "Outstanding Performance" score in the site. This means they were the top group from that judging site. Besides Jazz I, the Symphonic Band's percussionists performed "Concerto for Garage Band", received a Superior Rating, and took home an "Outstanding Performance" score for their site. Overall a fantastic day filled with so many talented students showing off their incredible musical talents! GAME RESCHEDULED FROM TUESDAY: Mon.
