The lady Cardinals were able to win two of the three matches on the day to improve their overall record to 11-2 on the season. The Cards defeated Sauk Centre in the first round by a score of 7-0, with everyone winning in straight sets with the exception of Jamie at second singles where she had to go to a third set breaker to get her point. Josie Nelson stepped into our lineup for the first time this season and she picked up a nice win at fourth singles to pick up from where she left off last season. The Cards then played an always solid Crookston team and with the exception of third doubles we dominated the Pirates. Ellie Ronning played one of her better matches of the season and defeated a very good player and only surrendered four games at first singles. Jamie, Kim, and Alli were the other singles winners. Kaity & Mariah also played one of their better matches and blanked thier opponents at first doubles. Brianna & Madison rolled in the first set at third doubles winning 6-2, but things fell apart and they dropped the next set and the breaker. The third match of the day was with Delano, a team that is ranked in the top ten in the state and they showed us why. We have never played them before and they defeated us 6-1. I thought our girls played a good match at most every spot, but Delano is a very good team with seven seniors in their lineup that have played a lot of tennis. Our third doubles team of Laura & Brianna played aggressive tennis and were able to win at that spot in straight sets. Our goal for the day was to get a win over Crookston and play the other two teams tough. Crookston is a common opponent for the north sub section teams so they were a priority. I feel we improved on this day and it will benefit us as we head into next week when we play Brainerd and Apollo. Laura Wilmesmeier picked up three wins on the day, and every player with the exception of Alli, Josie, and Madison got two wins on the day, Alli, Josie, and Madison all got one win, but only played two matches. With the game scoreless 20 minutes into the second half, McKenna Smith got behind the defenders on a breakaway. She drew the foul just outside the penalty area, giving Alex a free kick, as opposed to a PK. McKenna ripped a shot over the Tech wall that was hard for the Tech GK to handle cleanly. Four Alex players were crashing the net and it was Maggie Slagle that knocked in the rebound. Tech tied it up with 7 minutes remaining in regulation a defensive breakdown when a cross slipped through the goal area and found a weak side runner that wasn t marked. Kaye Paschka had the best opportunity in OT when a blast from in tight was fought off by the Tech GK. Alex saw much improved play from the defensive unit. Senior captain Kendall Kohler along with freshman Shea Issendorf led a defensive crew that also included Anna Jensen, Maryn Vaagness, Madi Gay, and Maggie Pfeffer. For the fourth time in the season, what seemed like a perfectly executed corner kick ended with Kohler s header just missing this time clanking off the crossbar. Josie Minnerath earned the team s Warrior Award this game for her aggressive play in the midfield. Right now this team is focusing on growth and improvement, not win / loss record. We saw huge improvement in intensity and execution. The goal is to continue doing so every game and come into playoffs as a team that will be competitive in any section match up. GIRLS SOCCER JV2 Alexandria 7 St. Cloud Tech Tigers 0 The JV2 team played another strong game and showed continued progress in passing and defending. The team worked well together to control the pace of the game and limiting the visiting Tech Tigers to just a couple of shots for the entire game. Scoring statistics: Olive Kopp (one goal), Hadlee Hansen (one goal/ two assists), Camille Hegstad (three goals), Anna Zwilling (one goal), Christina Drown (one goal). Next up for the Cardinals, the Sartell Sabres. BOYS SOCCER VARSITY Alexandria 0 Tech 2 The Cardinal boys soccer team host the St Cloud Tech Tigers. The final score Alexandria 0, St Cloud Tech 2. The two scores happen in the 8 th and 9 minutes. Zach Harstad turned away 21 other shots against a very good Tiger team. Tech controlled the first half. The Cards did come out stronger the second half but were unable to score. Our next game is at Sartell on Tuesday, 5pm. The Cardinal Nation activity passes and T-shirts will be available during open house at AAHS on August 31st, or they can be purchased any time throughout the school year. If you have any questions, please contact the activities office at ext SENIOR CITIZEN PASS It s Time to Become a Classic Cardinal Fan!! The Activities Department of District 206 values the senior citizens of Alexandria and appreciates the support they give to the students and coaches/advisors of the athletic teams and fine arts groups. To show our appreciation to these citizens, we will be making a Classic Cardinal Fan pass available to anyone 65 years old or older. This pass will sell for $20 and will permit the holder to attend 10 regular season contests of their choice. This is a $40 savings. These passes will be for sale at the ticket booths at any contest, or they may be purchased at the Activities Office at Alexandria Area High School. No individual tickets sold at contests will reflect a senior citizen price. In order to get this savings a Classic Cardinal Fan pass must to be purchased.
