A ROAD win against Sartell just doesn't happen too often. Sartell out played Alex in the first half, scoring the only goal of the half on a PK due to a hard challenge on a Sabre attacker in the box. The second half saw Alex playing even with Sartell and earning their own PK when McKenna Smith was taken down hard in the Sabre penalty area. Karson Granning scored on the PK to tie it up. With 13 minutes left McKenna Smith made a great run with the ball down the right flank. After getting a step on the Sartell defender, she cut in and drove to the goal line. At the last minute she made a little cut pass back into the box and Kelsea Navratil was there to score. Alex went on to survive a few tense moments including a Sartell breakaway in the last minute to hang onto the win. Despite some positive things, the game was not our best. A good team like Sartell will expose a few things that need to be addressed. But again - a road win against Sartell is a sign of continued progress. Saves: Cardinal Emma Ziegler 9 / Sartell's Alicia Niblock 6 GIRLS SOCCER JV2 Sartell 1 Alexandria 0 The little Cards dropped a tough 1-0 game to Sartell. Alex had 7 break aways but couldn't convert. Abby Johnson had great game on defense. Next action is tomorrow at Sauk Rapids. VOLLEYBALL 9 TH GRADE The 9th grade A team remains undefeated after their fifth win against St Cloud Apollo last night. Scores were 25-9 and The B team also remains undefeated with scores of 25-8 and 25-7 against Apollo. Good work ladies! BOYS SOCCER VARSITY Alexandria 0 Sartell 1
2 Alexandria hosted the Sartell Sabres on a windy Tuesday night. For the first time this year the Cards were unable to get the ball in the back of the net. It didn t help that striker Devin Crowe went down with a hamstring injury early in the game. Our objective going into the game was to keep Sartell from scoring two consecutive goals. The team accomplished that objective behind strong defense from captain Grahm Hegstad and 18 saves from Keeper Zack Harstad; however, Sartell s lone goal midway through the second half proved to be the winner. BOYS SOCCER JV Alexandria 1 Sartell 1 The Cardinal JV Boys Soccer team was at home for the second time competing against Sartell. With an the first half of the game ending in a draw, the Cards saw some competitive play from the Sartell team. In the 52nd minute of play Wade Smith was able to find the back of the net from a well placed ball by Toby Novotny. Sorted was able to answer back with a goal in the 67th minute. The game ended with a draw at 1-1 with some great play. The JV Boys Soccer team is currently and will host Sauk Rapids-Rice this Thursday at 5pm. Mariah Wegner & Marisa Otto (A) 7-5, 6-3 #3 Doubles Megan Wroole & Brittany Fletcher (B) def. Taylor Partington & Ellen Dee (B) 6-2, 6-0 The Cardinals girls tennis team suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Brainerd Warriors last night 3-4. Four of our five loses have been by the score of 3-4, and all of those matches could have easily gone the way of the Cardinals. The Cards started slow at every spot with the exception of Alli Prestby at third singles. Alli cruised to a straight set win and continues to impress with her consistency and control. We lost the first set at all six of the other spots. We were really hoping to get a doubles win somewhere in the lineup, but Brainerd is always tough at the doubles positions. Kaity & Jamie lost two close sets, and Marisa & Mariah had a 5-4 lead in the first set of their match, but both spots went the way of the Warriors. Taylor & Ellen were only able to muster two games at third doubles. Our only hope was a sweep of the singles lineup and it almost happened. Ellie Ronning came back and won the second and third sets at first singles. Kim Snell fought her way back and won the second and third sets at second singles, and Josie Nelson came back and won the second set, but was unable to win the third set losing 3-6 at fourth singles. This was a very important match, we only play Brainerd once this season so the implications for the conference and the north subsection were huge. I am proud of the way the girls fought their way back in this match, but it is hard to come so far back when we start so poorly. Statistically when you win the first set in a match you have a 68 % chance of winning the match. We fall to 6-5 overall, and 2-3 in the conference. Laura Wilmesmeier & Madison Ressemann (A) 6-3,6-2 VOLLYEBALL VARSITY Alexandria 3 St. Cloud Apollo , 25-22, The Cardinals had an excellent, team centered match last night against the Apollo Eagles! We took our first match this year 3-0 and did so with confidence and enthusiasm. While the Eagles made a push in set two, the Cards held strong (something we are working hard on), and took the set. All eleven girls healthy to play got their moments to contribute on the court. Last night s focus was to celebrate other s successes and it really contributed to awesome team chemistry on and off the court. Natalie Minnerath and Kayla Feldhake led the team with seven kills each, While Jordan Lamb, Abby Pohlen, and Mac Duwenhoegger each had five. Setter Alexis stern had 31 set assists, as she continues to run a well-balanced offense on her own. Syri Williams provided solid energy and tips for success to her teammates from the bench and stepped in to provide energy and defense on the court for a bit as well. Kendra Hardy also found a bit more Varsity playing experience at the end of set three, during which she played confidently and aggressively, resulting in one kill. Our backrow players, Maddie Moore, Gracie Schroeder, and McKenna Goracke did a great job of setting our offense up for success with consistent passing on free balls and out of serve receive. Last night s win was a great team effort and demonstrated improved consistency of skills and execution. The Cardinals are home again tomorrow night against St. Cloud Tech. Thanks to all the fans who came out to support last night! VOLLEYBALL JV2 Alexandria 2 Apollo 1 The JV2 volleyball team beat St. Cloud Apollo 2-1 last night. The scores of the games were 25-18, 25-18, VOLLEYBALL 9 TH GRADE Alexandria 2 Apollo 0 The 9th grade A team remains undefeated after their fifth win against St Cloud Apollo last night. Scores were 25-9 and The B team also remains undefeated with scores of 25-8 and 25-7 against Apollo. Good work ladies!
