1 CARDINAL CONNECTION Wednesday, October 19, 2016 EVENTS TODAY AND THE WEEKEND October 19th Time Versus Location Dismiss Leave Return Minnewaska Football 2:00pm Minnewaska vs AGC AAHS Football: Varsity 7:00pm St. Cloud Tech AAHS Oct. 20th Time Versus Location Dismiss Leave Return Soccer: Girls Varsity 8:00pm Section Final SCSU RESULTS FROM YESTERDAY GIRLS SOCCER When a season comes to an end, initially, it seems that the only take-away is an empty feeling in your gut. I don t have to look too hard to find 3 other take-aways from our season: 1. Hard work does pay off. Evidence: There are 6 teams in our conference that we played twice. The first time we played them, we won just 1 of 6. The next time we played those same teams, we won 4 of 6 games and were within a goal of the last game. 2. When an entire group is unified in their determination and commitment, anything is possible. Evidence: The seemingly miraculous playoff comeback win vs DL. 3. As much as it is about the win, it is more about the journey and the relationships you build on the way. Evidence: The realization that what I will REALLY miss is going to the field every day, working hard and having fun with an incredible group of student athletes (especially those who wrapped up their HS soccer career!). That is what gives me the empty feeling in my gut! Section Semis: Sartell 1 / Alex 0 Alex was on the road against the number #1 seed. Sartell showed why they were the top seed, controlling the ball most of the half. The only goal came with just under 5 minutes remaining in the first half when Sartell Defender Brooke Walters snuck in unmarked from the defensive line to receive a throw in. That forced the Alex defense to leave marks to stop her scoring threat. An open Maia Trombley received a pass and was able to get off the game winner a hard shot to the left corner from 15 yards out. Alex started the second half with its greatest offensive pressure. Continued pressure during the first 9 minutes resulted in a Sartell foul in the penalty area, giving the Cards a PK and their best scoring opportunity. Tessa Knoblach, who was one of the heroes in the PK shootout three days ago, took the PK. Her shot was very well placed towards the right corner, but lacked the pace that she wanted, giving Sartell s GK a chance to make the save and keep the lead. Alex GK Emma Ziegler played a great game, showing courageous play by coming off her line multiple times to punch out high balls away from oncoming Sartell attackers and keep the cards within striking distance. Seniors that wrapped up their Cardinal soccer career were: : Emma Ziegler, Kendall Kohler, McKenzie Revering, Tessa Knoblach, Ashten Oberg, Anna Jensen, Maryn Vaagenes, Maggie Slagle, Madisson Gay, Maggie Pfeffer, McKenna Smith, Elise Anderson, Britt Hurlen, Kiyana Miller, and student managers: Laura Timm, and Emily Larson. FOOTBALL JV

2 Cards 8-Tech 14 The JV Cardinal football squad headed to St. Cloud Tech last night. The Cards started on defense and stopped the Tigers on fourth down. The Cards' first possession resulted in a fumble and a return by a Tiger for a touchdown. The two point conversion was unsuccessful. The second half was a defensive battle going back and forth. With less than thirty seconds left in the first half Tech threw a 60 yard touchdown pass to one of their speedy receivers to make it 12-0 followed by a successful two point conversion. It was 14-0 at half. The second half was dominated by the Cards. We had some TD passes slip through our finger tips but everyone stayed composed and ready to get the next one. Defense continued to play great, recovering a fumble one series and Wade Odland getting an interception on the following defensive series. Late in the fourth quarter, Josh Wagner connected with Adam Pohlen for our first score. The two point conversion pass to Daniel Jantzen was good. As time ran out, it was Alexandria 8, St. Clout Tech 14 This was our last JV game. It has been fun to watch these young men grow and work together as a team. CROSS COUNTRY Central Lakes Conference Cross Country Championship The Alexandria cross country teams competed at the CLC Championships at Sartell at the Blackberry Ridge Golf Course. It was a beautiful Mid October day, a great fall cross country day. The course was run on a golf course that was new to all teams and not posting particularly fast times with the rolling hills. The Alexandria teams were ready for their competition and had some good team performances for the season. In addition, there were a few season best times. Thanks fans for coming out to support us!!! GIRLS RESULTS The Alexandria girls cross country team had many outstanding races with a fourth place team finish behind a highly state ranked Willmar team and a good Sartell and Rocori team. The Alexandria girls posted several season best performances. Bethany and Aleah Miller were back at it with Bethany being 9th to be ALL CONFERENCE and Aleah receiving 12th to be All Conference. Megan Shulstad and Kylie Larson were ALL CONFERENCE HONORABLE MENTION. Two other inspiring races were Heavy Bordak who ran a 26 second season best on the tough course and back in the line-up it was awesome tohave Rachel Kumorowicz on the line and running a great race! 3 The boys CLC varsity race showed how tough our Conference and Sections are in Cross Country. Sartell took a commanding lead and never looked back with a 1st place finish and Willmar and Rocori ran well to edge us out. Alexandria was fourth overall and claimed three All Conference runners and one honorable mention. The boys varsity Kyle Vander tuin broke the 17:00 barrier on this tough course. This meet showed us and made the boys realize what we are up against and wanting to make that final push into sections. The boys did post eight season bests on this course. Jason Moorman on the JV had a 20 second season best along with Pat Lovrein having a 29 sec season best! COMPLETE RESULTS CAN BE FOUND ON: pickleevents.com VOLLEYBALL Alexandria 3 St. Cloud Tech , 25-22, The Cardinals ended their regular season play with a sweep of CLC opponents, St. Cloud Tech. Tech previously swept the Cardinals this season, so it was a great turnaround for the team and an excellent way to wrap up regular season play! Last night s match was also in honor of our senior players and managers: Abby Pohlen, Syri Williams, Jordyn Lamb, Kayla Feldhake, Madison Simonson, and Hannah Miller. After a brief presentation on behalf of our seniors at the beginning of the match, the girls took the court with intention and took care of business. Statistically, Kendra Hardy had one of her best matches yet this season, producing 10 kills in 21 attempts with a.333 hitting percentage. Other Cardinal offensive contributors were Abby Pohlen with 8 kills, Jordyn Lamb and McKenzie Duwenhoegger with 7 kills, and Tori Jeseritz with 5 kills. Jeseritz also continues to play with extreme consistency, posting a.625 hitting percentage. Kayla Feldhake ran the offense with poise and confidence as she has done all year, putting up 41 assists. The Cardinal defense was strong and determined; Syri Williams had 16 digs, McKenzie Duwenhoegger had 11, and Abby Pohlen contributed 9. Alana Rodas had one of her best service nights of the season with 3 aces, 1 error, and 11 attempts. Even the girls who did not find themselves on the court last night played a very positive and supporting role as always. Their communication and encouragement from the bench is outstanding; it s that joint and united effort, from each and every player on the team, that will get this team through sections with success! The first section match for the Cardinals will be next Wednesday, most likely on the road. Seeding will take place Sunday evening and more details will be known after that. Go Cards! All high school games are considered school activities and behavior expectations are established through district and school policy, as well as the Minnesota State High School League. Here are some expectations we want to remind students and parents of: Elementary Students

5 Students must be accompanied by and supervised by an adult. Students should not be dropped off without an accompanying adult. Students must remain in appropriate spectator areas that are supervised by adults. This means seated in the grandstand or bleachers. Middle School Students Students must remain in appropriate spectator areas that are supervised by adults. This means seated in the grandstand or bleachers. ANNUAL PASS NOW AVAILABLE Adult Cardinal fans have an opportunity to purchase an Annual pass that will admit them to all regular season home events and concerts during the school year for $ The Alexandria Cardinals Annual Pass may be purchased at the District Administrative Office (located at Woodland Elementary building) from 7:30-3:45 throughout the school year. If you have any questions, please contact the activities office at ext CARDINAL NATION Students in grades 9-12 will once again have an opportunity to purchase a Cardinal Nation T-shirt and a photo ID activity pass that will admit them to all regular season home events and concerts during the school year for $ This is a significant savings for students over the course of the school year in comparison to paying $4.00 per event for regular student admission fees. Students are asked to sign a Code of Conduct agreement regarding behavior expectations, with the understanding that misconduct during an event could result in the activity pass being revoked by AAHS administration. The Cardinal Nation activity passes and T-shirts will be available during open house at AAHS on August 31st, or they can be purchased any time throughout the school year. If you have any questions, please contact the activities office at ext SENIOR CITIZEN PASS The Activities Department of District 206 values the senior citizens of Alexandria and appreciates the support they give to the students and coaches/advisors of the athletic teams and fine arts groups. To show our appreciation to these citizens, we will be making a Classic Cardinal Fan pass available to anyone 65 years old or older. This pass will sell for $20 and will permit the holder to attend 10 regular season contests of their choice. This is a $40 savings. These passes will be for sale at the ticket booths at any contest, or they may be purchased at the Activities Office at Alexandria Area High School. No individual tickets sold at contests will reflect a senior citizen price. In order to get this savings a Classic Cardinal Fan pass must to be purchased.
