The Wildcats battled the Mavericks to a 2-2 draw on Nov. 25 behind Atte Tolvanen s 37-save effort and goals by Dominik Shine and Troy Loggins scored 35 seconds apart in the first period. Omaha blanked Northern Michigan, 2-0, the next night as Evan Weninger stopped 31 shots, including 19 in the third period. On Nov. 25, the Wildcats went into 3-on-3 overtime for only the second time in program history and for the first time on their home ice. Robbie Payne tapped a Shine rebound into an empty net with 8.3 seconds remaining in the second bonus frame to lift the Wildcats to the unofficial victory. The 2-2 draw snapped a five-game losing slide, but Northern Michigan remains winless in its past seven games. The Alaska-Anchorage/Northern Michigan Series (0-6-2 WCHA) 1/9 Northern Michigan held Omaha to a single power-play goal during their series. The Mavericks entered the series converting on 35.3 percent of their power-play opportunities, 7 percent higher than second-place American International. Last season, the Wildcats only squared off against the Seawolves once. Northern Michigan earned the sweep, its first of the campaign, by winning the first game on Feb. 5, 3-2, and the second, 5-4. 2 during a late man advantage to propel the Wildcats to victory. Shine (2g-1a) and Darren Nowick (3a) helped seal the sweep with three-point outings the next night. Northern Michigan last traveled to Anchorage on Nov , Both games ended in a shutout. In the Wildcats 1-0 win on Nov. 21, Mathias Dahlstrom turned aside 13 shots, and Payne netted his first career game-winning goal. Olivier Mantha returned the favor the next night, making 28 saves to propel Alaska-Anchorage to a 4-0 victory. A quartet of seniors Shine (3g-4a), Gerard Hanson (1g-5a), Brock Maschmeyer (3g-1a) and Shane Sooth (1g-3a) are the leading point producers against the Seawolves on this year s team. No goaltenders on the roster have faced Alaska-Anchorage. Northern Michigan owns a four-game winning streak against the Seawolves dating back to Jan. 30, All four of those victories were scored at the Berry Events Center. Wildcat Penalty Kill Rebounds Against Nation s Best Power Play Entering its series with the Wildcats, Omaha owned the NCAA s best power play, which had converted on a whopping 35.3 percent of its opportunities. Notably, the Mavericks were seven percent more successful than second-place American International (28.3) and had scored at least two power-play goals in eight of their 12 games on the season, including five in a row. But the Northern Michigan penalty kill limited Omaha to a single power-play goal on nine opportunities during the series. That performance improved the Wildcats season penalty kill percentage to 74.7, moving them out of last place in the country. On Nov. 26, they held the Mavericks scoreless (0-for-4) on the man advantage. Omaha last failed to net at least one power-play goal during a 2-1 loss at Denver on March 5, 2016, going 0-for-3. Before Northern Michigan snapped their streak, the Mavericks had netted at least one power-play goal in 15-straight games dating back to March 11, The Next Time Out The Wildcats return to the Berry Events Center for this season s only series against Alabama-Huntsville. On Dec. 9, Northern Michigan will host a Toss Your Socks night as part of Rock Your Socks week in honor of long-time supporter Larry Heiskanen. Everyone is encouraged to wear their loud and crazy socks, and children in kindergarten through 12th grade who bring socks to donate to local charities will gain free admission. On Dec. 10, the Wildcats will hold their annual Teddy Bear toss. Game Day Information Radio: Every game, home and away, will be broadcast on FM The Point and called by Dave Danis. 4 Ice Chips By registering his fourth goal of the season in Northern Michigan s 2-2 tie against Omaha, Dominik Shine tied Robbie Payne and Darien Craighead for the team lead. He also took 15 of Northern Michigan s 63 shots on net during the weekend, setting a new career high with 10 during Nov. 25 s draw. Payne is the only Wildcat to have surpassed 10 points through the season s first 16 games, sitting in a tie for ninth in the WCHA with 12 (4g-8a). Gerard Hanson (3g-6a) is one point shy of the threshold while Zach Diamantoni (1g-7a) needs two more to reach it. Despite having his four-game point streak snapped by being held off the score sheet by Omaha, Philip Beaulieu remains among the WCHA s top point producing rookie blueliners. He is tied for fourth in points (7), tied for second in goals (2) and tied for sixth in assists (5). He also sits in a tie for 16th among all WCHA defensemen in points. Only 25 WCHA players, all defensemen, have blocked at least 20 shots this season. Northern Michigan boasts three of those players: Rylan Yaremko (6th, 32), Beaulieu (t-17th, 22) and Jordan Klimek (21st, 21). Two others, Brock Maschmeyer and Connor Frantti, are just one blocked shot shy of that plateau. With 18 blocked shots, Hanson remains the WCHA s forward leader. Only five forwards rank in the WCHA s top 50 in this statistical category. Payne joins Hanson in that select group; his 13 blocked shots has him in a two-way tie for 50th overall and alone in fifth among forwards. Atte Tolvanen made a season-high 37 saves in Nov. 25 s 2-2 tie. Overall, he turned aside 58 of 62 Omaha shots during the series, which improved his season save percentage to.904 from.898. The Wildcats suffered their fifth shutout loss of the season on Nov. 26. All five of those losses came by a 2-0 margin. Troy Loggins s first career strike proved to be the difference as Atte Tolvanen made 27 saves, including 14 in the final frame, to hold the Badgers at bay. The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 19 seconds into the game by capitalizing on a Wisconsin turnover. Maschmeyer one-timed the loose puck from just above the left circle, and Hanson flipped the booming rebound over Matt Jurusik s glove. After that, the teams traded power play goals before Loggins netted what proved to be the game-winning goal at 6:00 of the second period. Wisconsin appeared to net the equalizer early in the final frame when Cameron Hughes fired a shot on net that Tolvanen stopped, and the Badgers converged in the crease. Before the net was knocked off its moorings, Hanson pushed the loose puck underneath Tolvanen to keep it from crossing the line. Darien Craighead netted his second of the game to give Northern Michigan the lead just over two minutes in, but the Badgers responded with two unanswered strikes to secure the victory. Two of Payne s plays were highlight reel worthy. He set up Darien Craighead s first career goal in the middle of the second period by corralling a loose puck on his knees and sliding it through traffic. Just over two minutes later, he scored his second shorthanded goal after disrupting a Badger breakout and pulling Matt Jurusik out of the net with a fake for a tap-in goal. Payne also tied a Northern Michigan school record with his two shorthanded tallies. Only six Wildcats have netted that number in one game, with J.P.
