The Pitt Panthers (11-17, 3-13 EAGL) are heading to their second consecutive Northeast Regional Championship. Hosted by the University of Michigan, the Panthers will take on some of the nation s toughest competition with No. 2 Utah, No. 9 Michigan and No. 14 Auburn. Also competing in the regional competition will be EAGL conference opponents New Hampshire and Rutgers. Individual competitors from Yale, Rhode Island and Penn will be included as well. The competition is scheduled for 6 p.m. on April 8, in the Crisler Arena. This is the day in April that most collegiate gymnasts train for all year, but don t realize how fast it comes up, said Head Coach Debbie Yohman. It is doubtful that Andrea [Arlotta] will be able to compete in the all-around, but that decision will be made at the last possible moment. However, it is important that everyone in our lineup realizes that each of their performances counts and contributes to our national ranking at the end of the year. Recruits are watching. Pitt and our administrators are watching. Our competitors are watching. If we are going to Regionals, we need to go to succeed. On the vault, Pitt has two competitors ranked in the region s top 20. Junior Andrea Arlotta and freshman Victoria McGuigan-Carl are 13th and 16th respectively. Pitt also has two gymnasts in the top 20 on the uneven bars as well. Arlotta ranks 10th and recently finished eighth at the EAGL Championships. Sophomore Samantha DeBone ranks 13th on this event, having a regional qualifying score (RQS) of Both gymnasts were all-conference selections on the uneven bars. On the balance beam, Pitt has three gymnasts in the top 20. Arlotta leads in 15th with an RQS of Freshman Anya Chayka has become one of the team s leading beam competitors in 16th with an RQS of 9.690, and DeBone ranks 19th with an RQS of Pitt also has three gymnasts on the floor exercise as well. V MIKE ROWE Assistant Coach First Season Michigan State( 85) A member of the 2002 Region Five USAG Coaching Staff of the Year, Michael Rowe joins Pitt gymnastics as an assistant coach for the 2006 season. Originally from Michigan, Rowe has over 20 years of experience in gymnastics instruction and competitive coaching. While in Michigan, Rowe worked at Geddert s Twistars-USA as a head compulsory coach, optional team coach and choreographer. Rowe was an integral part of the women s coaching staff, qualifying all but one gymnast to the 2005 Junior Olympic National Championships, and he continually produced national champions. The club Mike came from is known for the number of gymnasts they annually send to Junior Nationals, as well as the NCAA gymnasts they have produced, Yohman said of Rowe s experience. He is highly respected throughout the region and has learned from the best. His easy rapport with people will transition well in the gym, and play well on the recruiting circut. In addition, he brings an added dimension to our program with a background in choreography. In addition to coaching at Geddart s, Rowe was a clinician for the Region Five Mini- Congress, Michigan State Congress and various state and region camps. He chaired a National Gymnastics Day initiative to raise money for Children s Miracle Network at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich. Rowe is a 1985 graduate of Michigan State University where he was a collegiate cheerleader. Prior to that Rowe was a gymnast at both Western Michigan and in high school. He also danced professionally from , mostly in regional and national tours of musical theatre. BETHANY WAGNER Assistant Coach Fourth Season New Hampshire ( 02) Bethany Wagner is in her fourth season as an assistant coach on the Pittsburgh gymnastics staff. Even before joining the Panthers, Wagner was no stranger to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League. Wagner attended the University of New Hampshire, where she finished her competitive career in She also served as team co-captain that year and led the Wildcats to a fifth-place at the EAGL Championships.Wagner recieved the award for Most Improved Gymnast at UNH that year. She tied for fourth on the balance beam at the 2002 league meet with a score of As a sophomore in 2000, Wagner was named to the All-EAGL Second Team on the vault, her strongest event during her collegiate career. Prior to New Hampshire, she trained and competed at Shield s Gymnastics in New Jersey. She was a Dean s Scholarship recipient while at New Hampshire, where she majored in marine and freshwater biology. According to Yohman, Wagner has helped strengthen the team s floor routines in her short time at Pittsburgh. Floor exercise has always been a strength for the Panthers, and Bethany has insured that we will have built on that strength, Yohman said. Wagner has also handled the recruiting coordination in the past and currently oversees the gymnasts strength and conditioning programs. Wagner, 25, is a native of Bound Brook, N.J.

14 Head Coach Debbie Yohman - 20th Season As she begins her 20 th season with the Panthers, head coach Debbie Yohman s career has been filled with record-breaking moments and a program that s changing for the future. Her efforts have been recognized by gaining quality recruits from Olympiccaliber gyms, and a look at the last few years in particular demonstrates why Yohman is leading Pitt gymnastics in the right direction. In 2000, Yohman coached her team to a second-place finish as they hosted the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships. Then in 2004, she watched as Alyse Zeffiro recorded the Panthers first two perfect 10.0 scores on the vault and floor exercise. Last season she coached Leila Tait to a regional beam title and a berth to the NCAA Championships. She didn t set Nationals as a goal, but she worked hard and did the job, Yohman said of Tait. It was a surprise when it happened, but not a surprise that it could happen when she won that event. Those are the kinds of things that we work for. If you train hard and learn how important it is to compete well all the time you ll find yourself up on that podium. An ECAC Coach of the Year, EAGL Coach of the Year and the 2002 Northeast Region Coach of the Year, Yohman has produced numerous decorated athletes over the years. Zeffiro was a 2004 league champion on the vault, and Danielle Freddie Alba was EAGL balance beam champion, and Samantha Salyers won Uneven Bars both at EAGL & NCAA Regionals. In addition to having successful competitors, Yohman said one of the major highlights in the last 20 years was the construction of the new training facility. I think we re progressing in a very positive direction, said Yohman. We re moving in a direction that we were simply not capable of going until we got this facility. The project was such a challenge, talking with colleagues, looking at gyms around the country, working with the architect and putting it together. Then to see it all be built and furnished with new equipment was tremendously rewarding. The new facility and progression of Yohman s program has attracted national attention, drawing in new recruits from topnotch gyms. For the 2006 season, Yohman has brought in a number of power gymnasts. The amount of energy they pack into their routines combined with their difficulty should greatly impact the season. When asked about the Panther newcomers, Yohman talks about their hard work and focus in the gym in addition to their aspiring academic goals. Yohman s gymnasts may have achieved many successes in the gym, but they have been equally strong in the classroom. In the last ten years, 41 Panther gymnasts have been named to the EAGL All-Academic team with seven of them being named to the team for four consecutive years. The team has also boasted 32 NACGC/W All-American Scholar Athletes having a grade point average of 3.5 or better. With Coach Yohman at the helm, our women s gymnastics team has always had exemplary student-athletes proudly representing the University, said Senior Associate Athletic Director Carol Sprague. I am thrilled with the completion of a dedicated, state of the art, Women s Gymnastics Training Center in August of She now has all the tools necessary to guide our team to the upper echelon of the EAGL Conference. Yohman also has had a long association with successful gymnastics programs as a competitor. During her collegiate career, she was a member of the 1976 national championship team at Clarion University. Additionally, she served as a student assistant for Clarion in 1977, also a national championship season, and then as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa ( ). Yohman is a current representative and former chair of the Women s Collegiate Program Committee and previously was the NCAA Gymnastics Coaches representative to the Women s Technical Committee (WTC) of USGF. Yohman also served for four years as chairperson of the ECAC Division I Selection Committee. She has served as meet director for Big 8, Big 10, and MAIAW Regional Championships, and is a USAG Elite judge. I am very proud of the level of progress this program has attained, and even more excited about the potential we have for the future. The level of expectation has increased and everyone from our athletes to our support staff has been energized about our team. We ARE a team on the move! COACHING STATISTICS Mil-Wisconsin Pittsburgh CAREER I am very proud of the level of progress this program has attained, and even more excited about the potential we have for the future.
