BATTLE OF HIGHWAY 41 This marks the eighth season that Lawrence and Marian have squared off in the Battle of Highway 41 series. No. 1-ranked UW-Stevens Point got a goal with 1:18 left in overtime last Saturday to tip Lawrence 3-2 in a nonconference game at Willett Arena. Stephan Beauvais scored off a pass from Tanner Karty 3:42 into the overtime to lift the Pointers, the defending NCAA Division III champions. Lawrence battled back twice to tie the game to force the OT. Jacob Barber scored just 3:43 into the game to give the Pointers the early 1-0 lead. Sean Reynolds took a pass from Mikkel Joehnk and scored at the 14:06 mark of the second to tie it at 1-1. That didn t last long as Beauvais

2 scored for Stevens Point scored just 17 seconds later for a 2-1 advantage. With just 5:33 left in the third period, Matt Montemurro scored on the power play for the Vikings to tie it at 2-2. Jesse Gordichuk made 12 saves to get the win for Stevens Point. Greg Procopio stopped 40 shots for the Vikings. Ninth-ranked UW-Eau Claire scored four goals in the final 6:27 of the first period last Friday to take command and went on to an 8-1 nonconference win over Lawrence in the season opener. Mac Jansen had two goals and two assists for the Blugolds, who had just a edge in shots. After the Vikings failed to cash in on a two-man advantage midway through the first period, the Blugolds struck first on the power play. Jansen scored on the man-advantage at the 13:33 mark for a 1-0 edge. Eau Claire went 3-for-5 on the power play, and the Vikings were 0-for-8. Garrett Clemment made it 2-0 with a goal at the 15:02 mark, and Todd Koritzinsky scored just 1:06 later for a 3-0 edge. Colton Wolter capped the outburst with a goal at the 18:18 mark. The Blugolds added two goals in the first 11 minutes of the second period before Lawrence got on the board. The Vikings Nick Felan scored off an assist from Lane King at the 13:17 mark. Jay Deo made 22 saves to pick up the win for Eau Claire. Mattias Soderqvist made 13 saves for the Vikings before exiting midway through the second period. Procopio made seven saves in relief. VIKINGS UPDATE }Lawrence takes on Marian in the Battle of Highway 41 series this weekend. The teams have been playing for the traveling trophy since 2009, and Marian has won it all but once. Freshman forward Matt Beranek (Lake Villa, Ill.) earned his first career point when he picked up an assist on Montemurro s power-play goal that tied Saturday s game at UW-Stevens Point 2-2. }Lawrence was looking for its first win in any sport against a No. 1-ranked opponent. The highest-ranked opponent Lawrence has ever beaten was St. Norbert, which was ranked No. 2 in 2013 when the Vikings won 5-4. }The opening games also marked the return of junior forward Blake Roubos (Niagara Falls, Ontario). Roubos missed all of last season with a shoulder injury but Blake Roubos piled up 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points in his first two seasons. }Sophomore goaltender Greg Procopio had the finest game of his career as he helped take No. 1-ranked UW- Stevens Point to overtime. Procopio Greg Procopio made a career-high 40 saves against the Pointers. Procopio s previous career high was 30 saves against UW-Eau Claire and Adrian during the season. Procopio posted a 3.23 goals against average and.904 save percentage during the opening weekend. }Lawrence had a rough opening weekend on special teams. SCOUTING MARIAN }Marian opened the season with a pair of shutout losses to No. 2 St. Norbert. The Green Knights took the opener 6-0 and then won the series finale at Marian 7-0. }Marian entered this season with one of the best goaltending duos in the NCHA. Mike Baldwin went last season with a 1.60 GAA and.931 save percentage. Mike Gudmandson went a season ago with a 2.21 GAA and.903 save percentage. }Marian took a whopping 23 penalties for 57 minutes on the opening weekend. }The Sabres return four of their top five scorers from a season ago. Junior forward Derek Thorogood had nine goals and 25 assists for 34 points a season ago. Junior forward Hunter Steewart had just three goals but piled up 28 assists for 31 points last year. Sophomore Gianna Mangone was second on the team last season with 12 goals and picked up 14 assists for 26 points. Sophmore Jake Howie is back after scoring 10 goals and adding eight assists for 18 points. }Marian went 0-for-16 on the power play against St. Norbert, but did a good job killing off the man-advantage.
