W. 11._Lanceley. LEATHER GLOVES AND MITTENS, 1944 The leather glove and mitten industry in 1944 registered an increase in both, the volume and value of goods produced. There were 3 more establishments than in Fployee,s increased by 5.6 p.c., salaries and wages by 6.0 P.c., the cost of materials by 9.0 p.c. and the value of products by 8.9 p.c. All types of products showed increases in quantity manufactured, except men's lined and boys' unlined working gloves. Other products including fabric gloves and moccasins increased in value by 30.8 P.C. The production of gloves and mittens during the year amounted to 956,959 dozen pairs, an increase as compared with 1943 of 63,918 dozen pairs.the value of the output of the 67 factories was an increase of 849,171. Comprised in the totel value of production are: 8,635,918, the value of gloves and mittens: 636,571, the value of aiscellaneous goods; and $1U,669, the amount received for custom work. The larger part of the production consists of working gloves and mittens, with a total of 683,33 dozen pairs, valued at 4,774,365. Tue output of dress gloves amounted to 273,636 dozen pairs, valued at Z,861,553. The general average value per dozen pairs for the two classes combined was t9.02 as compared with $8.94 in The factories are located by provinces as follows, with the figures for 1943 in parentheses: Quebec, 3 (29); Ontario, 24 (24); Manitoba, 7 (7); and British Columbia 3 (4). The relation which the value of production of each province bears to the total for Canada is shown by percentage, as follows, witn the 1943 figures in parentheses: Quebec, 59.5 (57.7); Ontario, 9.6 (co.6); Manitoba, 8.1 (8.4); and British Columbia, 2.8 (3.3). Tables 1 to 3 summarize the principal data of the industry over a period of years, while Tables 4 to 10 give statistics for 1944, by provinces, including a table showing the production of gloves and mittens classified according to the kinds of leather used in their manufacture. The volume contains also statistics of imports and exports and a list of leather glove and mitten rnufeturers. NOTE: Profits or losr s cannot he estimated from Census figures, as no data are collected for certain expense items, such as Interest, rent, depreciation, taxes, insurance, advertising, etc.
