4 V O L U M E 3, I S S U E 5 P A G E 4 Sherwood Park Phoenix at ASA Provincials Phoenix comes away as the most successful team from the North at ASA Youth Club Provincials After a strong showing by our Tier IV Community teams in Provincials earlier this summer, all eyes now focused on the Tier I, II and III Provincials for our Sherwood Park Phoenix teams. The Tier II and III Provincials took place over the weekend of August 12-14, with eight teams taking part in the various agegroups and tiers. Of the teams competing, three managed to place in the medals capping off a very successful weekend for Phoenix teams. The U14 Tier II Girls were put into a pool with a very strong WHU Premiers team from Calgary. After both teams won their opening game, the teams met Saturday afternoon, with our Phoenix girls already having played earlier in the day. A tight match ended 3-2 in favour of the WHU team, relegating the girls to a consolation game for 5th place, in which they defeated Saints 9-0. The WHU team went on to win the Provincial competition. Our U16 Tier II Boys finished 4th in a very close competition. After starting with a win and loss, the boys made the semi-finals as the best 2nd place team. In the semi-finals the team lost to eventual Provincial Champions SWU Selects, and lost in the Bronze medal game to local rivals Scottish. A dominant Provincial performance came from our U16 Tier II Girls as they cruised to a Provincial Gold medal. After going through the group stage with 2 wins, scoring 10 goals and conceding 1. Most would think that the games would get closer moving into the semi-finals, however the girls upped their game, defeating Raiders 8-0, and shutting out Blizzard 4-0 in the final. U18 Girls Tier II had a strong EMSA season, but just couldn t get things going in Provincials, and ended up finishing in 6th place after a 3-0 defeat to the Saints. The U14 Tier III Boys (Sandle) captured the Gold medal after a very strong weekend, defeating Medicine Hat 3-1 in the Gold Medal game. The boys came together and played exceptionally well throughout the tournament. Our other Tier III Squad (Ricketts) struggled early in the tournament, however continued to grow each game, finishing 8th place. Our U14 Tier III Girls (MacNeil and Nicks) both had strong showings at this years Provincial Competition. MacNeil s team started out with a very unlucky 1-0 loss to the eventual Provincial champions Storm in a game where they couldn t buy a goal. The team found the back of the net in their next games, defeating Medicine Hat 7-0 and MW Selects 2-0 to finish 5th. Nick s team finished the group stage 2-0, advancing to the playoff round. In a close semi-final game the team fell to St. Albert 3-1, but rebounded to capture the Bronze medal defeating SW Sting 2-1. The Tier I Provincials took place the next weekend, August 20-23, with three teams vying for a chance to represent Alberta at the CSA Club National Championships in October. The U16 Tier I Girls looked to repeat after their gold medal finish last season at the Tier II Provincials, however came up against strong teams from Calgary in their pool. After drawing their first game, our girls fell 1-0 to eventual Champions from Foothills. The girls rebounded to secure the Bronze medal on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Rangers from Calgary. The U16 Tier I Boys who for the most part were part of our U14 Tier I champions last year were playing up an age-group at this years Provincials. The boys had a strong season, finishing 2nd in EIYSA despite being a year younger. The team finished 6th place, losing each game by only a goal, including their opening game to the eventual U16 Tier I Champions. The showing this season will certainly set the team up well in the future. Our U14 Tier I Girls were coming off a strong season, finishing 3rd in a tightly contested EIYSA league. The team finished in Pool Play, ending up placing 6th in the Competition. Congratulations to all of our teams for representing Sherwood Park so well over the Provincial Competitions

REX & FC Edmonton Select 12 Phoenix Players Sherwood Park continues to be a hot spot in Developing Elite Players The SPDSA is proud to offer elite youth soccer through our Phoenix program.
