3 P A G E 3 Coach and Team of the Week How to Nominate your Team or Coach Does your team deserve recognition? Has your Coach created a positive environment for the team? Nominate Your Team Nominate Your Coach SPDSA February Coaches of the Week Nominated By: Kari Horiachka Age Group of the Team: U10 Advanced Girls - Ian MacNeil Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Coach Ian MacNeill has done an outstanding job with the "Strikers" this season. Ian is very organized and prepared for each practice. Recognizing the range of skill level within the group of girls, he coaches to improve all the players on the team; from the least experienced to the most skilled. He sees the potential in each girl, and encourages them to reach for that every game and practice. Ian your time and effort is greatly appreciated. Thanks! OUTDOOR COACH AND TEAM OF THE WEEK The SPDSA will once again be recognizing nominated Teams and Coaches from both the Community and Phoenix programs. Press d is back for our Coach of the week and will be joined by Exist Cycle. Players on team of the week will receive an FC Edmonton game voucher. Nominated By: Kailey Fitzsimons Age Group of the Team: U14T2 Phoenix Girls - Lee Ballam Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week?: Lee Ballam is the best coach and deserves coach of the week because he is a coach that has his heart in the game, every game! He shows his emotions for the game and can either be truly happy with a win or upset over the loss, but will never dwell on the negative or give up on us (no matter what the score is). After every game, win or lose, we talk about the pros and cons of the game and what we can do better next time and what we need to do. Every practice he strives to help us master certain drills, and tells us the level we should be at with the drill or that we are doing better then he expected. We practice drills that the whole team needs to work on, not just certain players. Everyone is treated equal and is given playing time, there are no favorites. Another thing that we get to do is attend fitness sessions with Coach Lee's other team, the U18's. They show us what we can strive for, and push us to work harder. I always look forward to Coach Lee's practices and hope that he can keep coaching my team. I think that he is truly the best coach! We would like to thank Tutti Frutti for supporting our Team of the week for the past two seasons Outdoor Referee Courses Refresher April 7, 6:00pm - 9:00pm Referee courses will be held at the Community Centre. 401 Fesitval Lane Sherwood Park, AB If you are interestd in refereeing for the SPDSA please contact Derek Douglas d.douglas@spdsa.net SPDSA Referees of the Month Recognizing officials their continued hard work on the pitch February Referees of the Month The SPDSA would like to congratulate Kevin and Cathy Methot, Colby Kennedy and Aoife Botchey for being selected as the Referee s of the month for February. 5 P A G E 5 Indoor Volunteer Appreciation Night The SPDSA invited all volunteers to attend the 2014/2015 Indoor Season volunteer/staff appreciation night on March 6. The evening started with all volunteers arriving at Millennium Place, lacing up the boots and showing off their skills in the annual Volunteers game. SPDSA Technical Coordinator Daniel Drummond formed the teams and did a great job balancing the teams with each game being tightly contested. In the end the Red Rockets overcame a first game loss to win their final two games and capture the Trophy. All participants showed great respect to one another and it was a great way for all of our volunteers to come together. The focus shifted from soccer to food as the group headed to Average Joe s for some delicious food and the opportunity to win some great door prizes. It was great to see Coaches from all different teams, age-groups and levels interacting at Average Joes and the turnout was well above what we initially expected. The SPDSA could not operate without the fantastic support of all of our volunteers, and this night is our small way of saying Thanks and we can t wait to continue working with you throughout the 2015 Outdoor Season. Top: Tournament MVP Juan Colazo Below: Group Picture after the tournament National Volunteer Week April Accepting Nominations for SPDSA Volunteers We appreciate what you do! During the week of April Volunteers are celebrated by participating organizations. The SPDSA recognizes our Volunteers at the end of each season with our Volunteer Appreciation night (As noted in the article above) and also our volunteer Coaches with our Coach of the Week program. 6 P A G E 6 Canada Hosts the Women s World Cup Edmonton Hosts 11 Matches, Including 2 Canada Games This summer Canada will be in the spotlight as we host the FIFA Women s World Cup beginning June 6th culminating with the final on July 5th. It is the biggest Women s World Cup in history with the expansion from 16 teams in previous editions to the 24 teams competing in Canada. Canada has been drawn into a pool A with China PR, New Zealand and the Netherlands. China PR was a Women s soccer powerhouse in the late 90 s where they finished runners-up to the USA in 1999 which stands as their best result at a Women s World Cup. New Zealand, where Canadian Coach John Herdman was born, is making their 3rd consecutive World Cup appearance. New Zealand believes this is the year they are going to be able to make it past the group stage. The Netherlands is making their Women s World Cup debut in 2015, however shouldn't be taken lightly by anyone in the Group as the country in 2007 began a big push in developing the Women s game. Finally Canada, who after a poor showing at the 2011 World Cup will be looking to make amends on home soil in Coming off a strong Bronze medal performance at the 2012 Olympics, Canada will be looking to give home fans much to cheer about. The team is led by the ever popular and deadly striker, Christine Sinclair. Canada will play two of its group matches in Edmonton, including the opening game of the tournament on June 6th and their final group game in Montreal. Depending on where they finish Canada could play a Round of 16 game in Edmonton. 8 P A G E 8 Self-Confidence in sport - make your ego work for you! By Dr. Costas Karageorghis October 30, When athletes feel confident, they are more readily able to turn sporting potential into superior performance. Conversely, when they feel unsure of themselves, the slightest setback or smallest hurdle can have an inordinate effect on their performance. Costas Karageorghis explores the nature of self-confidence and presents a theory underlying the causes of self-confidence in sport. He also reviews recent research and provides some powerful techniques that you can apply to enhance your own confidence or that of athletes in your charge What is self-confidence? I don t think it s bragging to say I m something special. Muhammad Ali For many athletes, an explanation of the concept of self-confidence is hardly necessary as they know intuitively what it is. Indeed, self-confidence is so palpable in some athletes you can almost reach out and touch it. Their confidence is reflected in everything they say and do, in what they wear and how they look. Self-confidence is commonly defined as the sureness of feeling that you are equal to the task at hand. This sureness is characterised by absolute belief in ability. You may well know someone whose self-belief has this unshakeable quality, whose ego resists even the biggest setbacks. In such people, confidence is as resilient as a squash ball: the harder the blow, the quicker they bounce back. Nonetheless, although confidence is a desirable characteristic, arrogance or a sureness of feeling not well founded in one s ability is undesirable. If self-confidence is perhaps the guardian angel of sports performers then arrogance is their nemesis. Confidence is related to personality and those who exude self-confidence across a range of contexts, say at work, socially and in their sport, are said to be high in trait confidence. However, confidence can also be very specific to a particular situation or with reference to a set of circumstances in which case it is known as state confidence or self-efficacy. When you perform any skill successfully, you will generate confidence and be willing to attempt something slightly more difficult For example, a professional football player may give off vibes suggesting they are high in trait confidence; however, when they are faced with the prospect of saving their team in a penalty shoot-out at a major championship, their state confidence can plummet and this has the potential to wreak havoc on their performance. This is precisely what happened to David Beckham when England faced Portugal in the quarter finals of the European Football Championships in June In the throws of a nail-biting penalty shootout, he lost focus and hoofed the ball over the crossbar. Theoretical approaches to sport confidence There are two main theoretical approaches to sport confidence; one is Robin Vealey s model of sport confidence(1) and the other is Albert Bandura s self-efficacy theory(2). Owing to its prevalence in the sport psychology literature and the empirical support it has attracted, I am going to focus solely on the latter. Bandura s theory was amended by Deborah Feltz(3) to form a sportspecific version while I have adapted it even further to suit the applied nature of this article (see figure 1 below). The six sources of self-confidence The confidence an individual feels during a particular activity or situation is generally derived from one or more of the following six elements, which are presented in figure 1 in order of their relative importance: Performance accomplishments are the strongest contributor to sport confidence. When you perform any skill successfully, you will generate confidence and be willing to attempt something slightly more difficult. Skill learning should be organised into a series of tasks that progress gradually and allow you to master each step before progressing on to the next. Personal success breeds confidence, while repeated personal failure diminishes it. Being involved with the success of others can also significantly bolster your confidence, especially if you believe that the performer you are involved with (eg a teammate) closely matches your own qualities or abilities. In effect, it evokes the reaction: if they can do it, I can do it. Verbal persuasion is a means of attempting to change the attitudes and behaviour of those around us, and this includes changing their self-confidence. In sport, coaches often try to boost confidence by convincing athletes that the challenge ahead is within their capabilities: I know you re a great player so keep your head up and play hard! An athlete might reinforce this by repeating the message over and over to him or herself as a form of self-persuasion. A tip here is to avoid stating what you want in the negative; so, rather than I really don t want to come off second best try I really want to win this one. Accordingly, your mind will not need to consider what is not required in order to arrive at what is. Imagery experiences have to do with athletes recreating multi-sensory images of successful performance in their mind. Through creating such mental representations, mastery of a particular task or set of circumstances is far more likely. What you see is what you get (see PP 238)! Physiological states can reduce feelings of confidence through phenomena such as muscular tension, palpitations and butterflies in the stomach. The bodily sensations associated with competition need to be perceived as being facilitative to performance and this can be achieved through the application of appropriate stress management interventions such as the five breath technique and thoughtstopping (see PP 243). Emotional states is the final source of selfconfidence and relates to how you control the emotions associated with competition, such as excitement and anxiety. Very often, the importance of the occasion creates selfdoubt, which is why it is essential to control your thoughts and emotions. Learning imagery and concentration skills such as those described in the spotlight of excellence (Exercise 2) will help. The article goes on to talk about self-confidence research and 5 exercises to build Self-Confidence, which can be found at the link below. The above article was posted at and was written by Dr. Costas Karageorghis and can be found by clicking here.
