WOW!! That was a hot and dry July for the records books that I am sure we will all remember for a while. With that said, I can t believe how quickly time is flying by. It is now August, school is about ready to start again and that means the hockey season is just around the corner. If you haven t taken a look at the website recently, I encourage you to take a look on a pretty regular basis this time of year. Registration is open and in full swing, many of you have already taken advantage of the early sign-up. Thank you for doing so as it assists us as a board in our season planning. Other things that have been added recently include Travel Team tryout schedule, discounted tickets to an NHL Pre-season game in Kansas City, discounted tickets to the College Ice Breaker Tournament featuring UNO in Kansas City and last but definitely not least, the announcement that OHC is now officially on Twitter. If you have a Twitter account, I highly encourage you to follow the Omaha Hockey Club. This is something new this year (I know, we are a little behind the times), but we would like to add this media to our member notification streams to help keep all of you abreast on what is happening in OHC. Items I foresee being Tweeted include but are not limited to, Special Events, Weather advisories regarding whether or not events are on or off during a weather event, updates on travel teams as they are out of town and updates for our house programs as Continued page 4 OHC 1

3 From the Travel Director s puck bag Tony Kopf Tryouts are nearly upon us and players and parents alike should be feeling some degree of anxiety. If you are confident you are a top notch player and will make the respective team you are trying out for, the anxiety may be from who your teammates might be; a good player may feel stress from the likelihood that there are a lot of equally talented players trying for a limited number of spots and an average player may feel the stress of potentially not making the same travel team with friends he or she has played with on a team last season. Parents, well honestly, it s about the kids so your stress is not really a priority, not p.c. perhaps, but it really isn t. There are numerous resources for skaters and goalies to make them better, such as camps, DVDs, and books and so on. However, in the end, it s up to a player to give their individual best every time they hit the ice and being able to respect a coach s decision on the selection of the right players for their teams. When on the ice, be humble in victory, be gracious in defeat, be hockey players. Win every race, stop every rush, out-work every opponent. I took the following excerpt from the Overtime chapter of Ken Dryden s The Game to conclude: I am a player. I love to play; I want to win; It matters to me if I win or lose; It matters to me how I play the game; I want to win without injustice or bad luck or regret; I want to own every pleasure and disappointment; I want to get lost in play; I want time not to matter; I want to do something more important than me; I cannot win alone; I need my teammates and my opponents to make me better; I trust, because I have to trust; I forgive, because I need to be forgiven; I play a game, not only a game; I try because that matters to me; I try because it s more fun that way; I don t quit because it doesn t feel good when I do; I play with others, but I play against me; I learn when I play; I play when I learn; I practice because I like to be good; I try what I ve never tried before; I fail, to fail smarter; I want to be better than I was yesterday. When you tryout, EARN your respective spots, don t let them be given to someone else and when tryouts are over, leave it on the ice. Good luck to all in the upcoming weeks. 4 Letter from the President continued they play. It can be a great tool to increase our membership awareness for the programs throughout our organization. I truly look forward to seeing what this new information stream will bring to OHC. Here is your quick update on the area rinks. Tranquility is up and running full speed now. It has been a mess this summer, but in the long run is going to be much better for them with the new coolers for the ice. From what I have heard, the ice is getting better daily. Ralston is still moving forward. We still are planning for ice availability there beginning October 15 th. The of course will cause some issues for the first 4-5 weeks of our Travel Teams ice and a couple of weeks of our IP and Mites, but after it is open, we should be in a pretty good situation. I just ask for your patience as we work through the schedule for the first part of October. There may be some changes as we work around the opening of Ralston, but I promise you we will do our best to keep you updated. Enjoy what is left of the summer vacation and good luck to all the players as they prepare for a new school year. 5 Registration Information continued For IP players only, there is an additional charge of $30 if you need a new jersey and socks for the upcoming season. New for the season OHC is pleased to offer the following improvements for the season with no increase in the registration fees: IP the IP White and Grey sections will continue to have two 45 minute sessions per week while the IP Orange group will have one 45 minute session and one 60 minute session per week. Mite supplemental ice will be available to all Mite participants so instead of averaging two sessions per week, Mite teams will be offered approximately one extra session every other week. Squirt through Bantam House League additional ice will be available to all Squirt through Bantam House League teams so instead of averaging one game and one practice per week, teams will be offered approximately one extra practice every other week. HS Club games for the HS Club program will increase from 60 minutes in duration to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Online Payments Once again, for the season, the online registration process will include the convenience of online payments. All participants will be required to select a payment option during the online registration process. The available payment options are Visa and MasterCard (both traditional credit cards and check/debit cards will be accepted), Discover, and PayPal. Travel players and Midwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL) Jr. Varsity and Varsity players Players interested in trying out for the Jr. Lancers Squirt, Peewee, or Bantam AA or A travel teams or the MHSHL Jr. Varsity / Varsity teams must first register as a House League player and must select one of the House League payment options when completing the initial registration process. Once the travel teams have been selected and team budgets have been finalized, travel players will be required to select a secondary payment plan in order to cover the difference between their house league fee and their travel fee. Detailed information will be provided during your first parents meeting before the season begins. Registration Information continued What about players who do fundraising or get corporate sponsorships? Players who are planning to take advantage of fundraising or corporate sponsorships must still select an online payment option to cover 100% of their registration fees. If a family participates in OHC fundraising programs, they only remit to OHC to cost of the products they actually sell and they get to keep all remaining funds which can then be used to offset the cost of their online payments. If a family is able to secure corporate sponsorships, OHC will write a check back to the family for the amount equal to the corporate sponsorship less a 5% administrative fee. What about players applying for hardship assistance? Players applying for hardship assistance will need to contact Gilinda Giles directly at (ggomahahockey@cox.net) in order to complete an offline version of the registration process and to establish an approved payment schedule.
