1 High Expectations For Army In 2005 Rarely, in his 21 years at the Academy, has Army head coach Jack Emmer been this excited entering a lacrosse season. The NCAA s all-time winningest mentor at the Division I level has assembled a cast this spring that should keep the Black Knights in contention for an NCAA Tournament bid, while challenge for a Patriot League title. Emmer is putting a lot of pressure on this group of 43 men, but it s pressure he feels this particular squad can handle. We have a couple of (attackmen) who led the country in scoring last year, Emmer starts. Obviously, they will need to be productive. But how our midfielders play will be instrumental. There isn t a single freshman in that bunch. Army is coming off a 10-5 mark last spring and its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. This time around, Emmer and the Black Knights will attempt to reach the postseason for a third straight year and move deeper into the tournament. Both are attainable goals considering the depth of talent returning in 2005 following a hard-fought loss at Maryland in the NCAA First Round last May. For the fourth straight year, Army will open with the Syracuse Orange, the defending national champions. The Orange are one of three Top 10 schools that appear on the Black Knights slate this spring and one of seven opponents ranked in the preseason Top 25 by Faceoff Magazine/Inside Lacrosse. ATTACK Two preseason All-Americans, John Walker and Jim Wagner, are the leaders up front for the Black Knights. Both display their talents much differently, but are very effective at burying the ball in the back of the net. The duo combined for a school record 83 goals last year the most tallies between two teammates in a single season in Academy history. Walker s the dodger in the offense, who adds a flair up front that is difficult to ignore. His athleticism and ability to improvise around the cage make him an All-American. He can create scoring opportunities on his own and draws much of the defense s attention, which in turn creates opportunities for teammates. His 71 goals in two years puts him on pace to break the school s alltime record. Walker, a preseason third team All- America pick, was one of 10 candidates being considered for the Tewaaraton Award last season and should make the final cut to five finalists this season. Wagner, a co-captain and preseason honorable mention All-America, possesses a quick release that enables him to get shots off before the defense can slide. The senior, who was not highly recruited out of high school, has turned into Army s most dangerous sniper offensively. His 46 goals a year ago were third most in a single season at West Point. Entering his final year of eligibility, he stands 24th on the school s all-time scoring chart. The group really respects Jimmy s unselfish approach, Emmer said about Wagner s leadership qualities. He always has the team s best interest at heart, and he is there at every practice, every day. Everything he has accomplished in his career has been done without a lot of fanfare. The only void up front is that left by departed senior Jeff Bryan. Emmer has worked freshman Matt Scheel, who will don Bryan s familiar No. 20, and junior Erik Nerdalen into the third and final spot on attack. Both show great promise. Scheel distributes the ball well, giving him a slight edge as the feeder in the offensive scheme. The Medina, Ohio, native excelled at the Algonquin Cup this fall. Nerdalen has experience and a comfortable familiarity on his side. He will certainly see some time on the extra-man unit if not in the starting lineup at attack. The coaching staff is expecting Nerdalen to step up and contribute more regularly. Brandt Germann will spell the abovementioned group. Sophomore Hunter Wakeland and freshman Alex Morse need to develop their games and make that adjustment to the college level. MIDFIELD Despite a very talented attack unit, Emmer feels his midfield lines hold the key to a successful season. (The midfield s) strength is in their experience, which enables us to throw more schemes at them, Emmer explained. The Black Knights lose just one middie (Marko Kostovic) from a year ago, but can run three very experienced and capable lines out on the pitch at any time. The majority of Army s middies were attackmen in high school, opening up a plethora of options for Emmer and his coaching staff. The more the midfielders dodge and create scoring opportunities for themselves, the better off we will be, Emmer explained. That would make the defense slide to them and off of our attack. Jake Couch teams with sophomore Justin Bokmeyer and junior Mike Obringer on Army s top midfield line. Couch had a breakout year in 2004, scoring 16 goals and Ben Harrow Defensive finishing fifth on the team in scoring with 20 points. Couch entered the Academy with high expectations, and came into his own last year. Bokmeyer, a California product, made the adjustment to college lacrosse seem easy. Though penciled in on the team s third midfield unit at the beginning of last season, Bokmeyer rose all the way to the top, eventually earning a start on the top line in Army s NCAA Tournament game at Maryland. The plebe netted two goals in that postseason loss. However, he was the team s highest scoring freshman and finished seventh overall in scoring with 11 points (10G, 1A). Obringer, the third member of that No. 1 unit, is a good finisher in unsettled situations. He runs well with the ball and shoots well on the run, making him a perfect fit at midfield. Couch s twin brother, Chris, heads the second midfield line. The Couch twins are both selfless players and students of the game. Emmer feels they will get more scoring opportunities in Army s system. Chris Couch is teamed with classmates Brian Green and Chris Larsen. Green and Couch can both get to the goal and finish, and both players are very athletic with the ability to dodge. Larsen has the size and strength to be a force at the top of the restraining box and draw some attention. Sophomore Ryan Chase leads the third midfield Lacrosse Media Guide

2 One of Toughest Schedules Highlight Spring Head coach Jack Emmer considers Matt Bowerman to be one of his most physical defensemen. line. His partners are senior Matt Ellement, a clearing specialist with three years experience who can fill in at any role, and junior Jon Burton, a physical player who brings a high level of intensity. Nate Foust and sophomore Brian Ivany add depth to a loaded midfield. Both are still developing their game and could work into one of the lines depending on their progress throughout the season. Freshmen Ben Reardon and Paul Wigdzinski will benefit from the leadership and experience of the incumbent middies as they adjust to the college game. DEFENSE Preseason All-American Matt Luyster is the featured stopper at close defense for Emmer and his Black Knights. Luyster, known for his ability to run the field and shoot with the long pole, always draws the opposition s top offensive threat. The Hicksville, N.Y., native will also be utilized on the wing on faceoffs as Emmer tries to find somebody adept at picking up ground balls. Last year, Luyster s 61 grounders were third on the team. Matt Bowerman is the only other returning starter at close D. He brings with him another very solid frame and imposing presence on the field. Bowerman started all 15 games a year ago and is Army s most physical defender. Nick Doerr is slated as the third starter in that group. The Central N.Y., native has made great strides in the offseason and is coming off his best fall since joining the Academy. Doerr has a gift for knocking down passes and causing turnovers in the defensive end. He is much faster and quicker than he was as an underclassman. s Drew Narcum and Andrew Yakulis were mostly utilized in man-down situations last unit. Emmer believes that both are very capable of starting positions and will push the three projected starters on defense. Both are consistent, steady performers. Freshmen Tom Gossweiler and Adam Hansinger possess great potential and will spend their first year learning the game behind some experienced upperclassmen. GOALKEEPING co-captain Matt Darak returns for his third season as Army s starting goalie. Darak set the Academy record for saves in a single season, making 227 stops last spring and breaking a mark that had stood for 49 years. Matt has done exceedingly well, Emmer said. He has a quiet confidence about him. He took advantage of some playing time early in his career, and his game has gotten better every year. Darak is a positional goalie with solid fundamentals who does not stray from the cage much. He has come up big for the Black Knights in backto-back wins over Rutgers the last two years when the Scarlet Knights were ranked in the Top 10 each time. Eddie Clark is the most experienced reserve in goal for Army. He owns a similar stay-at-home style to Darak and is not easily flustered. Clark will be Emmer s top choice off the bench to spell Darak if the situation surfaces. Adam Fullerton is the third goalkeeper on the roster. The lefty from Liverpool, N.Y., is the best stick-handler of the three goalies. SPECIALISTS Erik Mineo and junior Tony Vozzolo are probably two of the most talented faceoff men Emmer has recruited since the early 1990s. Both possess good technique, but need to improve their ability to create a fast break off the draw and limit turnovers on the ground balls. Mineo has been hampered by knee injuries his entire career, but still lists among the schools all-time leaders in faceoff winning percentage. Vozzolo s short stature gives him plenty of leverage on the X. The two specialists should share the faceoff duties again this spring. Six veteran defensive midfielders make that group just as experienced as Army s three offensive midfield lines. Long-stick E.J. Behrendt and short-sticks Geoff Costa and Ben Harrow comprise the Black Knights No. 1 unit. All three are seniors and all three are excellent at clearing. Costa can dodge very well and Harrow has a lot of speed. Tory Sokul and senior Jeff Auer have plenty of game experience as well. They will both see quite a bit of playing time with Sokul spelling Behrendt at long-stick and Auer relieving Costa or Harrow. Sokul is a big defender with good range. Auer is a strong, physical player who brings a lot of intensity. Vic DeMouth is perhaps the fastest player on the Black Knights roster, which makes him valuable in the clearing game. Emmer also hopes to get him on the field in faceoff situations where he can come off the wing and scoop grounders. DeMouth is only in his second year on varsity, but has really made tremendous progress in two seasons. Tom Ronan is another defensive midfielder that will try to work his way into the lineup. He received quite a bit of playing time last spring, and the coaching staff is impressed with his progress. Ronan is an excellent option off the bench for the Black Knights. Roy Ragusa will spend his first year developing his game behind this very talented group. Three freshman long-stick middies, Ryan McClure, Jay Larson and Nick Miner have a lot of potential. They will need a year to adjust to the college level and learn their trade with some older, more experienced players in front of them on the depth chart. Emmer feels this trio has a lot of potential in Army s future. defensive midfielder Tom Ronan gained valuable game experience last season Lacrosse Media Guide 17
