20 Colors of the Pyramid Steps to a Healthier You The USDA s new Food Guidance System comes with a symbol to replace the original Food Guide Pyramid. The new MyPyramid symbol is meant to encourage consumers to make healthier food choices and to be active every day. MyPyramid is made up of six color bands representing the five food groups and oils. Those colors, with a brief description of each, are as follows: Red represents fruits. Consumers are encouraged to eat a variety of fruits and to go easy on fruit juices. Orange represents grains. Consumers are encouraged to eat at least 3 ounces of grains per day and to specifically look to include more whole grains in their diets. Green represents vegetables. Consumers are encouraged to eat more dark green and orange vegetables, along with more dry beans and peas. Yellow represents oils. Consumers are encouraged to limit solid fats and to select most fat sources from fish, nuts and vegetable oils. Blue represents milk. Consumers are encouraged to get their calcium-rich food, but to go low-fat or fat-free. Consumers who can t consume milk are encouraged to locate lactose-free alternatives. Purple represents meat and beans. Consumers are encouraged to choose low-fat or lean meats and poultry. Also, people are encouraged to vary their choices and to bake, broil or grill them. In order to personalize a food guidance system, go to the website ( The information required once at the site is age, gender and activity level. The combination of individual information is then used to calculate a person s recommended portion size of each food.
