2 4-H FST FCTS Youth Leadership Team Chicago Trip Left to right: Kendall Knodle, Tyler Behme, riana Coan, Haleigh Hester, Natalie Fry, Erin Kistner, lex Miller, Rachel Wolff, Taylor Wills, Nathan Bailey, (Back) Hyler Pence, ustin Pence, Kaden Reynolds. Thirteen youth from Montgomery, Christian and Macoupin Counties took part in a Chicago Career Exploration trip on pril 2. The group was led by Extension 4-H program coordinators, Elisha Hughes and Kate Harding. The purpose of the trip was to explore new careers at a tech company in Chicago called Relativity. This included a company tour, discussion panel and learning to code. The company inhabits eight floors of a Chicago high-rise near Union Station. The discussion panel included members of their programming, law, human resources, online security and promotions departments. Other than talking about what they do in each department, they talked about how they got where they are today. Many of them started out in different fields before they ended up at Relativity. They encouraged the youth to get as much experience in as many areas as possible until they find what they like doing. The youth participated in a short coding session and were encouraged to try coding in school because it is a field that needs more workers. While in Chicago the group visited the cultural center, the Bean, Sky Deck and finished with Chicago Style pizza. 2

5 4-H FST FCTS Host families needed for Japanese & Korean 4-H Exchange students for 4 WEEKS this summer. July 25-ug 19. Placements needed now Enjoy an International Experience Without Leaving Your Home. Please consider sharing in the experience of being a host family and taking a young foreign exchange student into your home. Your family will have the opportunity to enjoy another culture, grow in their communication skills, and build memories that will last a lifetime. While the student is only here for a month, the effects of this exchange has long-lasting benefits for your own students. Studies indicate that students who are exposed to multicultural experiences tend to be more creative and think unconventionally compared to their peers. This experience also looks great on a college resume as recruiters favor students with a better understanding of the multicultural environment encountered on college campuses and in the work place. Even if you have a busy summer, bring them along with you, and let them experience everyday life in an merican family. Host family requirements Families must pass a background check, have a youth in the home with a similar age, gender and interest as the exchange student, and have an interest in other cultures. Students will need their own bed, but can share a room. Students arrive July 25 and return ugust 20, age ranges from You don t need to plan anything special during their stay; they just want to experience everyday merican life. For more information, visit Contact Miriam Rosenbohm rosenbohm07@comcast.net or Elisha Hughes mailto:ehugh2@illinois.edu 5

9 4-H FST FCTS N INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT Making the best in each of us better On the surface, members in your 4-H club may look pretty similar, but in reality, they all possess differences. They are different ages, come from different family backgrounds, have traveled/lived in different places, and have different likes. Each member brings a unique perspective which is influenced by his or her own unique individuality. When considering club activities, events and programs, it s important to think about the similarities and differences of your club s membership. To make sure everyone feels included, get to know your members. What are their favorite, places to go, food, hobbies, music, or games to play. fun way to learn about similarities and differences is to play the Have You Ever game. Have you ever: been ziplining lived in another state eaten alligator watched Spongebob Sqaurepants said 'excuse me' when there was no one around scared myself in a mirror sung in the shower. been to a foreign country spoken a difference language been to Disney World To play, have members stand in the middle of the room, if they have done what is called, have them move to one side of the room. sk clarifying questions, such as what states have you lived in, did you like alligator, what countries have you been to, what languages do you speak, what song do you sing in the shower, would you sing for us, etc. By acknowledging and celebrating similarities and differences, members feel accepted and appreciated. They are more likely to participate and become more engaged in club, county and state activities, programs and events. They are more likely to feel valued and supported. Remember, we all learn and communicate in a many ways. Taking the time and effort to treat every member as an individual and truly believing that each can succeed will have a positive and lasting effect on success in life. That s what 4-H is all about To make the best in each of us better! Stand up and be heard Compete in NEW Public Presentation Contest new contest will showcase the speaking talents of the Illinois 4-H members. The contest will be Saturday, June 9 in Decatur at Richland Community College. ctivities will begin around 9 a.m. Each county may send three delegates and they may come from any of the four divisions: Formal Speech, Illustrated Speech, Original Works, Oral Interpretation. Youth may participate in this contest ND STILL BE SELECTED as a delegate to state fair in a different project area. ll presentations must be 4 to 6 minutes in length. See the rules and scoresheets online at 4-H.illinois.edu. Click Member>Projects>Communications. The contest is sponsored by Compeer Financial through the Illinois 4-H Foundation. We hope clubs will travel to the contest to cheer on their favorite competitors and learn more about speaking in public. 9
