If you wait until the last minute and run into problems there may not be anyone around to answer your questions or fix issues in fair entry. 1

2 You see them at state 4-H events in their bright green shirts. Now YOU can become a 4-H Youth Leadership Team member. Eligibility: Age 16 to 19 by September 1, Length of service: Two years, so new Team members selected this summer will serve from September 1, 2018 through August 31, Apply mid-april online: go.illinois.edu/4hylt. Look for the application at the bottom of the page under Resources. Deadline: Early deadline is June 15 for interviews during Illini Summer Academies. Last deadline is July 31 for interviews during the Illinois State Fair. This unit has several youth currently serving on YLT. They would be great resources if you have questions about applying, interviewing, or the benefits of joining. Kimel Kaitlynn DeBlock On March 11 th the Kimel 4-H club met for their monthly meeting at the Aledo Presbyterian church. The meeting was called to order at 5 p.m by president Josie Finch. The treasurer s and federation reports were give. There was no secretary s report that was given. Then the old business was given. They talked about the soup cook off that was March, 17 th. The new business was given. Mercer County 4-H s day to show general projects at State Fair will be August 11 th. Talks and demonstrations were given from Kaitlynn DeBlock and Ella Bull. 4-H Educator named for Henry, Stark, Rock Island, and Stark Counties Jennifer Peterson of Alpha, IL was promoted to the position of 4-H Youth Development Educator for University of Illinois Extension, serving the counties of Henry, Mercer, Rock Island and Stark. She is a familiar face to 4-H families in the unit as she has served as the 4-H Program Coordinator for the Henry and Stark Counties since Jennifer graduated from University of Illinois with a Bachelor s Degree in Ag Communications and a Master s Degree in Education. In her new role, Jennifer will oversee the community clubs in all four counties. She will continue to work out of the Henry/Stark office located at 358 Front Street in Galva, IL. To request an application, contact Katie Laleman or keboruff@hotmail.com Scholarships in the amount of $250 will be awarded to a high school senior or freshman in college. The student must be a current Mercer County 4-H member and must be a livestock exhibitor. Completed applications should be mailed to Katie Laleman, E 1600 Street, Geneseo, IL

3 2 Mercer County 4-H BBQ The Mercer County 4-H BBQ will be Friday, June 8, at the Aledo Fire Station from 5 7 p.m. In conjunction with the BBQ, there will be Farm in the Park 3:30 6 p.m. sponsored by the Mercer County Ag Education Program. There will be hands on activities, including a petting zoo; a variety show sponsored by and the movie Beauty and the Beast sponsored by Huffman s Farm & Home store. If you can t help at the BBQ or Farm in the Park, please talk to your leader about other possible community service events you can help with. Do all your family s entries before submitting. Each animal you are showing is a separate entry. Enter the general projects class that corresponds to the one in which you are enrolled. June 13 - Flower Arranging Workshop & Contest and Clothing Revue The Mercer County Youth Flower Arranging Contest will be held at the Mercer County Farm Bureau, Aledo on June 13, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Supplies will be provided at low cost of $10. An instructor will teach youth how to create one centerpiece around a theme such as a wedding, holiday, birthday, etc. Youth will then create an arrangement to be judged and take home. The arrangements are made at the contest with the supplies provided. Open to all youth ages 8 to 18. Mercer County 4-H Horse & Pony Show, 4K Arena, th Ave., Viola Saturday, July 7 ~ Registration begins at 8 a.m. Show begins at 9 a.m. Entries must be done online. Please refer to the 2018 Mercer County 4-H fair book for rules and class information. Lunch concessions will be available by Saddle Teens 4-H Club. Leaders, please don t forget to submit your members articles and pictures to the Times Record according to the schedule distributed at the last leaders meeting. 3

4 Livestock Horse papers are due to the Extension office by May 1. Included must be: Ownership or Lease papers Two COLOR photos (one of each side of horse) Risk Forms (if you haven t already turned one in for the year). Horse Shows: Horse shows will be held at Black Hawk East on May 20, June 10, and July 1. All 4-H members are invited to participate. Entry fee is $3 per class or $15 all day for one horse. Second horse is $10 all day. For more info, contact the Extension office at th Annual Charity Open Horse Show May 26 9 a.m. Schone s Friendship Farms, Milan, Illinois Rain or shine Entry Fees: $4 4-H members/$5 non 4-H members Superior Young Producer Scholarships $1,000 will be awarded to 4-H members in beef, sheep, swine, dairy, and horses during the state fair. The beef, sheep, and swine contests will be combined. The horse competition date is July 25. State Livestock Judging Contest When: Monday, June 18. Registration 8:30-9:30 a.m. Contest begins at 10 a.m. Where: Stock Pavilion on U of I campus in Urbana 1402 West Pennsylvania Avenue. Details: Each county may enter a total of 3 teams between the junior and senior divisions. Teams must consist of 4 members. An unlimited number of individuals may enter. Juniors are ages 13 and under as of January 1, 2018 Seniors are ages as of January 1. Warren County Livestock Judging Contest When: Saturday, June 9 Where: Warren County Fairgrounds, Roseville Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Contest begins at 9:00 a.m. Divisions: Junior - Ages 8-13 Senior - Ages Cost: $3 per person Register: by June 7 for teams of 4 to Tara Chenoweth in Warren County Extension Office. The nomination process will be done online this year. The process for nomination is as follows: 1. Get DNA envelopes from Extension and pull hair. 2. Enter all information into showstockmgr.com prior to delivering the DNA nomination envelopes to Extension. 3. Pay the $6 per envelope fee on the showstockmgr.com website prior to delivering envelopes to Extension. 4. Deadlines for turning in envelopes remain the same. June 15 They have added breeding sheep and breeding goat shows for The market swine show will be nonterminal with optional harvest. The show dates are September in Grand Island, NE. 4

5 Our General Projects Show date is: Saturday, August 11 State Poultry Judging Contest The Illinois 4-H State Poultry Judging Contest will be June 26. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the U of I Stock Pavilion in Champaign. Youth 8 to 13 (on Jan. 1, 2018) compete as juniors; youth 14 and older compete as seniors. The top winners will represent Illinois at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in November in Louisville, Kentucky. The contest will include three classes of past egg production hens, two classes ready-to-cook fowl or fryers, one class of ready-to-cook heavy fowl, one class of broken-out eggs, two classes of shell eggs candled, and two classes of exterior egg quality. Oral reasons will be on one of the egg production classes. The official resource is the National 4-H Poultry Judging Manual. Copies of the manual and more information are available from Extension Poultry Specialist Dr. Ken Koelkebeck, kkoelkeb@illinois.edu. Help Illinois Win $20,000 April 1 May 15, you can help Illinois win $20,000 just by raising your hand! Check it out State Fair State Dog Show The State 4-H Dog Show is moving to a larger location this year. It will be held on August 25 at the Granny Rose K-9 Enrichment Center in Dixon, Illinois. The larger location will allow both the obedience and the showmanship classes to be held on the same day! There will be a separate (non-4-h) open show held in the same location on Sunday, August 26. Youth who have time to stay are invited to participate in that show as well. State Fair General Projects: New in 2018 Volunteers will be celebrated with a special gift. Visual Arts: Duct Tape Arts will exhibit in the fiber class. Visual Arts: Stained Glass will exhibit in the glass class. Project MUST remain on display until 3:30 p.m. Since there is no Clover Celebration, projects will be released promptly at 3:30, but not before. If you need to leave early, give your return ticket to someone else and ask them to pick up your project. 5

I think the warm weather is FINALLY here, and it s that time when the kids start to count down the final days of the school year and the start of summer break! That also means that the fair will be here before we know it. Members will be able to register for fair classes until June 1st, after June 1st fair registration is closed. Before attempting to register for your fair classes, log on to il.4honline.com website and check the projects you have entered. You must know the project levels you are in before registering for your fair classes. Livestock entries make sure to register the number of stalls needed ONE time. Enter 0 for all other stalls.
