NOTICE TO: 2017 Mercer County Traveling Trophy Winners: Please make arrangements to have trophies returned to the Mercer County Extension office ASAP. As we look toward a summer filled with shows, we encourage you to remember this: It s never about winning; it s about being part of something more than yourself. It s never about being perfect; it s about being your personal best. It s never about beating someone else; it s about beating your last effort. It s never about losing; it s about learning. It s never quitting, never giving in, never selling out. It s learning to lose gracefully and win graciously in the ring of life. It s learning that sometimes the break goes your way and sometimes it doesn t. It s about respecting your competitor and respecting the rules because the minute you stop either one, you ve lost. --Illinois 4-H Mercer County 4-H Horse and Pony Show Date: Saturday, July 7 Location: 4K Arena Ave. Viola, IL Exhibitors are required to wear a helmet while riding a horse. 3 4-H Hall of Fame The Illinois 4-H Foundation will honor outstanding 4-H volunteers on Tuesday, August 14 in the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. This year, the Hall of Fame will induct volunteers who made tremendous contributions to their local 4-H programs. The celebration begins at 2:30 p.m. as a part of Ag Day right before the Sale of Champions activities begin. Supporters and families of the recipients are welcome to attend. Each county is allowed to nominate one individual for induction each year. Read below to find out more about our local volunteers going into the Hall of Fame this year. Mercer County Please congratulate Bill Boruff as a 2018 Hall of Fame nominee! Bill is a Mercer County 4-H club leader. He was a 10 year member of the Joy Ag 4-H club, which later became the Joy-Eliza Ag 4-H Club. He is a third generation leader of the club. His grandpa, mother, and uncle were all leaders of the club. Now, Bill and his wife, Stacey, lead the club and his children are members. His son, Andrew, is in his tenth year of 4-H and daughter, Kaelyn, is in her seventh year of 4-H. Bill is involved in 4-H in many ways. He has been a fair superintendent for 20 years. He started as superintendent in the hog barn and is now superintendent of the sheep barn. In Joy-Eliza Ag, he is specifically the Cloverbud leader. He does activities with the Cloverbuds at every meeting. A few of the activities have included showing them how to use an antique corn sheller during harvest, learning the parts of a chicken, hands-on chicken activities, pumpkin bowling in the fall, and lambing barn tours in the winter. And that s just naming a few! Bill also helps financially support the Mercer County 4-H program by cooking over 500 pork chops at the annual 4-H BBQ fundraiser and donating his time at the Youth Livestock auction during fair as one of the auctioneers. Apart from 4-H, Bill is a very busy guy. He works at John Deere Parts Distribution and also operates a family farm. He is an auctioneer at Dale L. Jones Auction Company. He has been a volunteer firefighter for several years. He is now the Chief of the Eliza Fire Station. He is also involved with the Eliza Lions club and the Eliza Community Church. Bill is an outstanding volunteer and role model in Mercer County community and we are grateful to have him. Congrats, Bill and thanks for all you do! Rock Island County Please congratulate Pam Berenger. Pam has been part of the 4-H family dating back to the1980s. When her kids first joined 4-H, she helped with club activities; however, it didn t take but a year and she was an assistant leader. She would later become a full-time leader. Pam has not only served as a 4-H leader during her kids 4-H years, but also both her older and now younger grandkids. She has been described as having helium hand meaning that she always raises her hand and agrees to help in one way or another. Pam isn t the type of person to sit back and wait for things to happen. She had heard comments about there not being enough horse shows for the kids to showcase and practice, so she went into action and organized shows and raised money to pay for the judges and ribbons. She also organized a SPIN club and secured a grant to help get the SPIN club up and running. The past three years the Hayburners 4-H Club has sponsored a show Ride for Hunger that has raised $900 and collected about 500 pounds of food for the Riverbend Food Bank. In September, Hayburners and Trail Blazers 4-H Clubs together hosted Hooves for Paws and raised $4,000 for QC Paws, a non-profit organization that supports the needs of animals in the Rock Island County Animal Care and Control Shelter. Pam is an inspiration. Her passion for both kids and 4-H shines through in all the activities she has attended and organized. She is a pleasure to work with and the 4-H staff enjoys her wit, humor, and enthusiasm for the 4-H program. Rock Island County 4-H has been very fortunate to have Pam Berenger as one of its treasured 4-H leaders and volunteers. Congratulations, Pam, on a well-deserved honor! 3

As we look toward a summer filled with shows, we encourage you to remember this: It s never about winning; it s about being part of something more than yourself. It s never about being perfect; it s about being your personal best. It s never about beating someone else; it s about beating your last effort. It s never about losing; it s about learning.
