There will be hands-on activities including a petting zoo. Timeline: 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. - Farm in the Park 5 to 7 p.m. - 4-H BBQ meal available at the fire station. Dusk - A screening of Beauty and the Beast. *If you can t help at the BBQ talk to your leader about other community service projects. 2 Mercer County NOTICE TO: Fair Booth Contest 2017 Mercer County Traveling Trophy Winners: Please make arrangements to have trophies returned to the Mercer County Extension Office ASAP. Put your thinking caps on and be creative! The Federation will be sponsoring a club booth contest again this year. Clubs make up their own THEME. Booths will be judged on Wednesday, July 11 after 3 p.m. Sewing & Floriculture Project Members: There will be a Flower Arranging Contest on Wednesday, June 13 at the Aledo Farm Bureau. The workshop and contest participants will design center piece arrangements. The workshop begins at 2 p.m. with the contest at the conclusion. To register go to web.extension.illinois.edu/hmrs. Phyllis Nelson Memorial Livestock Scholarship The Mercer County Youth Livestock Auction Committee will be awarding the 2018 Phyllis Nelson Memorial Livestock Scholarship. A scholarship in the amount of $250 will be awarded to a high school senior or freshman in college. The student must be a current Mercer County 4-H member and must be a livestock exhibitor. Completed applications are due by June 15. Applications must be requested from Katie at (309) or keboruff@hotmail.com. Mercer County 4-H Horse and Pony Show Date: Saturday, July 7 Location: 4K Arena Ave. Viola, IL Register by entering horse classes in fairentry.com Entries are due BY June 1. Please refer to the Mercer County Fair Book pages for class rules and information. On show day, registration begins at 8 a.m. and the show starts at 9 a.m. Lunch concessions will be provided by Saddle Teens 4-H Club. 2

3 Mercer County Want to get a project done for the fair? Come learn how to put together a themed poster that will take you all the way to the State Fair. All you need to bring are your ideas and anything special (like pictures) you want to put on the poster. We will provide poster board and highlighting tools! This workshop is free of charge to Mercer County 4-H members. It will be held on Saturday, June 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Speer Funeral Home. This project takes used crayons and recycles them into new crayons that are distributed to Children s hospitals across the nation. Drop your bagged crayons to a garbage can marked crayon at either New Boston Elementary, Apollo Elementary, Mercer County High School Ag Building or Aledo Walmart. my pi camp Disaster Preparedness for Teens When: June Time: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Location: YMCA of Kewanee; 315 W 1st St. Kewanee What: hands-on sessions to complete FEMA s CERT Training. Congratulations to Andrew Boruff, Korryn Baraks, and Josie Finch who each received a Mercer County 4-H Memorial scholarship. These scholarships are made available through generous donations honoring members of the community and former Mercer County 4-H alumni. Best wishes to Andrew, Korryn and Josie in their pursuit of high education! Congratulations also to Alison Barrington and Vada Gregory, recipients of the Patti Jeanne Higgins 4-H Scholarship! This scholarship is provided by the family of Patti Jeanne who knew first-hand the value and impact 4-H can make in the lives of youth. Best wishes to Alison and Vada in their future endeavors! Sherrard 4-H Report Submitted by Rosie Hayes 5/19/18 Sherrard 4-H meeting. Big Thank you to everyone that donated to QC Paws. The club also bought $50 worth of supplies. Emily and Rosie donated items to QC paws on April 28th. We discussed the 4-H BBQ on June 8th 5-7pm. We are cleanup with Kimble. Emily, Rosie, Sidney and Cole, Andrew will be working at the BBQ. Rosie motioned to spend $45 to make 9 pies on June 6th. 4 pies will be for Mercer county BBQ. Emily seconds that motion. Everyone needs to do their 4 -H write up about themselves for the Times record. Please to Barb. We discussed Mercer Fair entries, but the website isn t up yet. A congratulations also goes out to Vanessa Bucher who placed third in the senior division of the State Horse Judging Contest. Great job, Vanessa! 3

4 Rock Island County Fair Booth Contest Put your thinking caps on and be creative! The Federation will be sponsoring a club booth contest again this year. Clubs make up their own THEME. Booths will be judged on Tuesday, July 17 after 5 p.m. Rural Go Getters Wyatt Viager We voted at the May meeting to pay off the supplies for the project. Then, we shared new news, which was signing up for our fair projects by June 1. We had a talk by Emma about when they went to Muscatine, Iowa and made a pillow case. Morgan did a talk about fishing. We also worked on a project for the Fair Booth. Floriculture Project Members: Club award applications are due to the Rock Island or Mercer County Extension Office by August 31. Get credit for all the wonderful things your club has done this year. Applications are available at: You see them at state 4-H events in their bright green shirts. Now YOU can become a 4-H Youth Leadership Team member. Eligibility: Age 16 to 19 by September 1, Length of service: Two years, so new Team members selected this summer will serve from September 1, 2018 through August 31, Apply mid-april online: go.illinois.edu/4hylt. Look for the application at the bottom of the page under Resources. Deadline: Early deadline is June 15 for interviews during Illini Summer Academies. Last deadline is July 31 for interviews during the Illinois State Fair. This unit has several youth currently serving on YLT. 5 Show N Show Off Dog Show Where: Granny Rose K-9 Enrichment Center When: Saturday, June 9 9:00 a.m. - Agility 10:30 a.m. - Showmanship 11:30 a.m. - Obedience (all levels) Entry: $10 first class, $1 for additional classes. Entries due by June 8. Contact the Extension office for an entry form. Horse Shows: Horse shows will be held at Black Hawk East on June 10 and July 1. All 4-H members are invited to participate. If you are interested in being an announcer or ring help, please contact Jennifer at the Extension office. 4-H Equine Tack Swap Join us on June 2 to buy, sell, or trade gently used equestrian equipment! We will be located at the Henry County Fairgrounds in the Merchant's Building. Item drop-off is from 7-9 a.m., and the swap will last until 3:30 p.m. 10% commission will be applied, and proceeds will benefit the Equine Ambassador program at the HCF If you would like to sell items or have any questions please contact Alyssa Gustus at (call or text) or amgustus@gmail.com **If a club would like to independently provide concessions, please contact me.** Livestock Warren County Livestock Judging Contest When: Saturday, June 9 Where: Warren County Fairgrounds, Roseville Registration begins at 8 a.m. Contest begins at 9 a.m. Divisions: Junior - Ages 8-13 Senior - Ages Cost: $3 per person Register: by June 7 for teams of 4 to Tara Chenoweth in Warren County Extension office or tlcheno@illinois.edu Questions: Contact Lynn Shimmin at * Boxed lunches will be available for $ DNA envelopes are available from the Extension office and are due back by June 15. State Livestock Judging When: Monday, June 18 Registration 8:30-9:30 a.m. Contest begins at 10 a.m. Where: Stock Pavilion on U of I campus in Urbana 1402 West Pennsylvania Avenue Details: Each county may enter a total of 3 teams between the junior and senior divisions. Teams must consist of 4 members. An unlimited number of individuals may enter. Juniors are ages 13 and under as of January 1, 2018 Seniors are ages as of January 1. 6 Our General Projects Show date is: Saturday, August 11 Orders are due to the Mercer Office by July 15. Tickets can be purchased ONLY for Saturday, August 11 - Mercer & Rock Island General Project Day and/or August 14 - Hall of Fame Induction. Livestock exhibitors must order their tickets via the State Fair Entry forms. Extension can only sell parking passes for Lot 18. Drop-off passes will be available for all general project exhibitors. This is NOT a parking pass. You must continue to your designated lot after dropping off or your car will be towed. If Lot 18 is full, you will be redirected to an open lot. Exhibitors aged 13+ need an admission pass. Extension no longer provides passes to exhibitors. State Poultry Judging Contest The Illinois 4-H State Poultry Judging Contest will be June 26. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the U of I Stock Pavilion in Champaign. Youth 8 to 13 (on Jan. 1, 2018) compete as juniors; youth 14 and older compete as seniors. The top winners will represent Illinois at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in November in Louisville, Kentucky. The contest will include three classes of past egg production hens, two classes ready-to-cook fowl or fryers, one class of ready-to-cook heavy fowl, one class of broken-out eggs, two classes of shell eggs candled, and two classes of exterior egg quality. Oral reasons will be on one of the egg production classes. The official resource is the National 4-H Poultry Judging Manual. Copies of the manual and more information are available from Extension Poultry Specialist Dr. Ken Koelkebeck, kkoelkeb@illinois.edu. State Fair State Dog Show The State 4-H Dog Show is moving to a larger location this year. It will be held on August 25 at the Granny Rose K-9 Enrichment Center in Dixon, Illinois. The larger location will allow both the obedience and the showmanship classes to be held on the same day! There will be a separate (non-4-h) open show held in the same location on Sunday, August 26. Youth who have time to stay are invited to participate in that show as well. State Fair General Projects: New in 2018 Volunteers will be celebrated with a special gift. Check in anytime August at the information booth in the Orr Building. There will be no Clover Celebration. There will be no Fashion Revue. The Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame winners will be inducted at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14 in the Orr Building prior to the Sale of Champions festivities. Project MUST remain on display until 3:30 p.m. Since there is no Clover Celebration, projects will be released promptly at 3:30, but not before. If you need to leave early, give your return ticket to someone else and ask them to pick up your project. Superior Young Producer Scholarships $1,000 will be awarded to 4-H members in beef, sheep, swine, dairy, and horses during the state fair. The beef, sheep, and swine contests will be combined and will include a skillathon, management test, and meat identification and judging. The horse contest includes a skillathon, management test, and live animal judging. Horse Contest - Wednesday, July 25 at 6 p.m. Beef, Sheep, and Swine - Wednesday, August 8 at 6 p.m. All contests are held in the Livestock Center Show Ring. Contact the Extension office for a full breakdown of contest rules and information. 6

7 2018 MERCER COUNTY YOUTH LIVESTOCK AUCTION RULES Market Beef, Market Swine, Pens of Commercial Meat Poultry, Pens of Commercial Meat Rabbits, Market Lambs, and Meat Goat Wethers RULES Only 4-H members are eligible to sell an animal. Member MUST be present to sell an animal. No scratches allowed without approval of the committee prior to the sale. Sale will start at 6 PM on Friday night of the Mercer County Fair. A 4-H'er may sell ONLY ONE MARKET ANIMAL and is entitled to sell any animal that receives a "Blue" or "Red" rating. Animals must be fit to sell and the Livestock Sale Committee has the right to reject the sale. Exhibitors will be responsible for livestock until after being sold and should present the animal in the best possible condition. IF THERE IS ANY INAPPROPRIATE HANDLING OF THE ANIMAL IN THE SALE RING, OR AT ANY TIME, SALE PRIVILEGES WILL BE REVOKED. All 4-H members participating in the sale are REQUIRED to attend a meeting in the Swine Barn at 3 PM the day of the sale to set up for the sale and finalize sale procedures. Parents are also needed at this set up time and sellers MUST help clean up that night after the sale. Sale order -Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champions must sell. IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE GRAND CHAMPION, YOU MUST CHOOSE WHICH ONE YOU WILL SELL. Any animals showing at further exhibition will be bought back by the 4-H member (seller), at the floor price established by the committee the day of the sale. AT WEIGH-IN YOU WILL BE GIVEN A COPY OF THE RULES TO BE SIGNED BY 4-H MEMBER. AND SIGN THAT YOU AGREE TO ABIDE BY ALL RULES. Steers must be broken to lead and led into the ring by the 4-H'er in order to sell. 4-H'ers with sale animals MUST notify the superintendent which animals they will be selling when they weigh-in. The 4-H member cannot withdraw the declared retention of ownership after weigh-in. Buyers are responsible for any premium over established market price. Entry weight at the 4-H show will be the sale weight. Meat chickens, ducks, turkeys and commercial rabbits will sell by the pen. WHEN YOU SIGN THE SALE INTENT FORM, 4% OF SALE PRICE WILL BE WITHHELD FROM THE SALE AMOUNT. These funds will to be used to cover sale expenses and help support 4-h in Mercer County. Sale weights - There is no weight requirement for any animal to be sold or bought back. (orphan calves are not considered a market animal, therefore are not eligible to sell in auction). APPROPRIATE SALE ATTIRE. NO SHORTS or T-SHIRTS ALLOWED. The only exception for t-shirts would be club or county 4-H t-shirts. CHECKS &THANK YOU CARD Photographer will be available after the sale so buyer can be in your picture. The youth is responsible for getting the picture to the buyer as quickly as they receive them. IF BUYER DOES NOT RECEIVE PICTURE & THANK-YOU CARD IN A REASON- ABLE TIME, SALE RIGHTS THE NEXT YEAR WILL BE REVOKED. If your buyer has not paid, you will not be sent your check until they have paid in full. The youth are responsible to solicit local businesses about purchasing the livestock. Packers will determine the minimum price the night of the sale. The Extension Office will not be distributing checks. Checks will be handled by the Livestock Auction Committee. IF A CHECK HAS TO BE REISSUED, A FEE OF $40.00 WIL BE ASSESSED. 7

The Mercer County 4-H BBQ date is Friday, June 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Aledo Fire Station. A day of family fun is planned for this year s BBQ beginning with Farm in the Park and ending with the movie Beauty and the Beast at dusk. I hope to see everyone there! A very special thank you to Mercer County Federation, Joyce Smith and Sharon Mayhew for volunteering to help coordinate the BBQ. This is a large and time consuming event to organize. Your help is greatly appreciated! Many thanks from the Mercer County 4-H members, leaders, and Extension staff. A gentle reminder about upcoming deadlines. State Fair horse exhibitors - entry forms MUST be postmarked by June 1. Don t forget to include 2 color photos of the horse, ownership/lease/registration papers and $10 stall fee per horse. Remember, your entry forms must be signed by an Extension staff member. Please don t wait until the last minute! Online fair entries are due June 1. Please do them early and contact us if you have problems. State Fair livestock exhibitors must have entry forms submitted by July 1 along with entry fees - these also must have an Extension signature. Fair time is always an exciting time of year!
