Courtney Wiedenmann, a member of Saddle Teens 4-H Club, was in the top 5 individuals overall who will receive a $1,000 Superior Young Producer Horse college scholarship. Courtney scored 242 points out of 300 points. On July 24, during the Illinois State Junior Horse Show, the seventeenth annual Superior Young Producer Award (SYPA) contest was held. The forty-three youth horse enthusiasts who competed in this year s contest began the competition by judging two halter classes and two performance classes. Judging classes included stock-type gelding conformation, stock-type mare conformation, stock-type hunter under saddle and stock-type western pleasure. Contestants then took a written test, completed fifty multiple picture questions and five skillathon stations. Plaques were given to the top three individuals in each event (judging, written exam, and stations). The top five individuals overall earned a $1,000 scholarship to the post-secondary education institution of their choice. To participate, these individuals were either a 4-H or FFA member in good standing, meeting all eligibility requirements. In addition, they were required to be between the ages of 14 and 19 according to 4-H or FFA rules. Congratulations to Courtney for doing an outstanding job of demonstrating her comprehensive horse knowledge. Way to go Courtney; that is quite an accomplishment!! A Big Thank You!!!! From the Saddle Teens 4-H Club Saddle Teens 4-H Club wishes to thank everyone for the generous support of their lunch stand at the Mercer County Fair Horse Show. These funds will be used to fund their Holiday Family Project. The Mercer County Horse Committee wishes to thank all the 4-H ers who participated in the horse show. The Fair time is an especially busy time for 4-H members and yet Mercer County Federation teens answered the call when our county was chosen to be one of the fairs in Illinois to take part in an economic impact study to understand the local and state economic and community benefits of our fair. Working around livestock and general judging schedules they were able to meet the required 500 completed surveys before the end of the fair thanks to community members that support the Mercer County Fair. When another need was identified at the Federation meeting to help Mercer County children get the supplies they will need to start the new school year they once again jumped into action. Sydney Roling, Isaac Goldner, and Brandi Welch immediately attended the fair board meeting to present the idea to them. The board approved the request to keep a school bus at the

4 Page4 fairgrounds during fair week and Glen Nelson donated a barrel of root beer to hand out in appreciation to those that donated school supplies. When asked, Alan Boucher agreed to provide a bus and Pack the Bus at Mercer County Fair became a reality. It was awesome and fun! said Sydney Roling. It was nice to recognize a need in the community and act on it. I really enjoyed it. We feel this was a great success for our first year of Pack the Bus, stated Tim Goderis. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of our community we were able to collect 615 school items plus monetary donations to provide even more. If interested in joining the 4-H Teen Federation contact Tracy Pestle, 4-H Program Coordinator at or fowlerpe@illinois.edu or talk to your club leader. This is a time for you to think ahead to your next year of 4-H. The first thing to think about is: What projects will I take? Think about the projects that you took this year. Did you like them? You may want to take them again. You can take the same project and try some new activities. Or you can move on to another level. Maybe you would like to try some new projects. Your leader will have the new Illinois Clover very soon. You can look through all the projects again. Be sure to look close. There might even be a few new projects listed. The next thing to think about is: What will I do in my 4-H club? Would you like to be on any club committees? What about being a club officer? Recreation chair, reporter, or historian is a good office to start with. You ll have some leadership responsibility, but not too much. Also, start thinking about speeches and demonstrations that you could give this year. You have the first one under your belt, and they get easier the second time. Get the most out of 4-H by trying new things and having fun! If you want to know more about projects, events, or activities, ask your leader, a member of your club, or call the local Extension office. Are you interested in horses? Don t have a horse, that s ok! Come check out Horse Bowl!
