2 COUNTY COUNTDOWN Brazos County 4-H Banquet The Brazos County 4-H Banquet is coming up! It well be held on September 14th at the Brazos Expo Center at 4:00 PM. The theme for this year is Harvesting 100 years of 4-H. Each club will be responsible for decorating their table. Please RSVP by September 5th at On the website, add everyone who will be attending to the list. If you need extra tickets, they will be available for purchase at the Brazos Extension Office. Pizza Ranch! It s that time of year again, and Pizza Ranch is coming up soon! This year it will be on October 8th and 9th. If you are interested in volunteering to help out, please contact the Brazos County Extension Office. T-Shirts!! County Council is selling t-shirts for $7.00 this year! They come in adult and youth sizes. Shirts are sold at the County Extension Office, and they will also be available at 4-H Fun Day. 3 COUNTY COUNTDOWN HOT Fair Contest & Events The Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo in Waco has added some new contest and events for 4-H members to enter in. Below is a list of the events and contest that will be held this year at the fair. Agriculture Public Speaking Contest Consumer Decision Making Contest Agriculture Product ID Contest Food Challenge Livestock Judging Trap Shooters Extravaganza For more information about these contest you can view the rule book at this link: All entries must be done through our office or the day of the event. If you have any questions please contact us here at the office at Congratulations Ashley and Beau Skinner on their new baby boy Taos 4-H Connect Membership Enrollment for September 1, 2014 starts a new 4-H enrollment year on 4-H Connect! All profiles will change to IN- ACTIVE ON AUGUST 31ST and you will be required to re-enroll for the H year. All 4- H members and adults need to complete both a family and individual profile for membership and to be able to register for events. If you are re-enrolling and already have an existing profile, do not create a new profile, UPDATE your existing one with new , physical addresses and phone numbers. 5 COUNTY COUNTDOWN 44 th ANNUAL BRAZOS COUNTY 4-H CAKE SHOW & AUCTION Monday, August 18, :00 p.m. AT THE BRAZOS CENTER Sponsored by the 4-H Adult Leaders Association to raise funds to support the 4-H program, a youth organization in Brazos County. Funds support 4-H'ers through Leadership Labs, Fashion Shows, Roundup Contests, Food Shows, etc How Does the Show and Sale Work? In support of the annual fundraiser, 4-H members, adults and family members are asked to bake cakes or pies which are entered in one of ten categories. You may make as many cakes as you want, however please avoid cakes/pies that require refrigeration! Remember all cakes/pies must be wrapped in plastic wrap, even if they are in a covered cake/pie container. *** Participants entering in categories 1-7 must make two (2) cupcakes or mini pies for the judges to taste. If they do not bring cupcakes/mini pies, the cake/pie will not be judged and will sell at the end of the auction. Please bring these in a covered GladWare, foil or similar container. 0. Clover Kids Division 5. Chocolate Cakes 1. 4-H Theme Cakes 6. Pound Cakes 2. Good Old Fashion Eating 7. Pies 3. Decorated Cakes (includes animal cakes) 8. Adult Cakes and Pies 4. Men and Boys Division ***EVERY Participant must bring a hand written thank you note per cake in a stamped unsealed envelope when they check their cakes in. Make the thank you note specific to your baked item. These will be addressed and mailed to the buyer of your cake/pie. Please encourage the participants to use their best skills when thanking members of our community for supporting our youth as they represent our entire Brazos County 4-H program! Dress: Sunday attire (collared shirt and slacks/nice jeans, dress; no t-shirts, shorts or flip flops) Check-in cakes/pies from 5:00-5:45 p.m. Hamburger Plates from J. Cody s will be available from 5 7:00 p.m. at the Brazos Center for $8/plate (includes burger, chips and drink). 4-H members are asked to remain during the auction to carry their cake/pie as it is auctioned, and to personally thank their buyer. Texas Two-Step Chicken Utensils: What you need: 2-quart shallow baking dish Measuring cups and spoons Mixing bowl and spoon Meat thermometer Ingredients: 4 boneless chicken breast halves 1½ cups picante sauce 3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 3 cups cooked brown rice What to do: 1. Wash hands and any cooking surface. 2. Preheat oven to 400 F. 3. Place chicken in 2-quart shallow baking dish. 4. Mix picante sauce, sugar and mustard. Pour over chicken. 5. Bake in oven for 20 minutes or until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 F. 6. Serve chicken with rice.
