Oct. 1 kicks of National 4-H Week and the first weekend in Oct. in the 4-H community is known as, 48 Hours of 4-H. This is when 4-H programs across the state of Kansas are all completing community service projects on the same weekend, making the best better in their communities. How exciting is that! I am very proud of the community service projects our youth are completing in Wyandotte County. I am proud to announce we have added an eighth community club to our 4-H program, the Truth Seekers! We are working with their adult leaders and youth to help them become acquainted with our program and assist them as they start their journey as a 4-H club. As 4-H enrollment season approaches, families please remember that each child must have their own individual 4-H Online profiles, with projects selected to be officially enrolled in our 4-H program. In order to participate at the 2018 county fair, youth MUST be enrolled with projects selected online by May 1. Please contact the Office if you have any questions or need assistance with the online system. October is an exciting month, as the Extension Office is celebrating our centennial year and we are having our first 4-H Roundup event after 4-H Council on Oct. 19! Stay tuned to our Facebook page for daily updates on the 4-H program, events, and the most up-to-date-information. Sincerely, Nicole Crosson 4-H Youth Development Agent 1 P a g e

The event includes a cooking demonstration by WDAF Fox TV s Lisa Farmer, as well as numerous engaging activities, displays and refreshments. All are invited to the Open House. You are invited to the Open House event. Staff, past employees and special guests are invited to the centennial dinner that will proceed the annual elections board meeting. The public is also invited to this meeting. Dr. Pat Bosco, K- State Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of students is the keynote speaker. This meeting will also include special recognition of the 20-year anniversary of the Master Gardeners and the 15-year anniversary of the Master Food Volunteers. The Supplemental Nutrition Education Program (SNAP-Ed) is celebrating its 21st year. Nozella Brown, director of the Wyandotte County office, said the centennial celebration marks a special moment in the history of local extension services. I think of it in terms of our mission of connecting (Kansas State University) to the residents in our county and meeting the local community needs, Brown said. We have always tried to offer a culturally appropriate program and we ve been at the forefront of providing the county with non-biased education and resources that helps to enrich citizens lives. The KSRE Wyandotte County office was established on October 25, 1917, just a few years after the U.S. government passed the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 that established the Cooperative Extension Service across the country. The Smith-Lever Act provided a federal appropriation to states to develop extension programs in every county. In Kansas, the extension service is managed through Kansas State University, which has established extension units in each of the state s 105 counties. Extension offices bring the resources of the university to those working in the community. Before the Wyandotte Extension office was officially opened, Ellen M. Batchelor, hired Sept. 1, 1917 served as the Home Demonstration Agent for the county. The county s first extension 2 P a g e

3 agriculture agent was A.G. VanHorn, hired on Nov. 1, Today, there are six agents, including the director, serving the county, as well as four nutrition educators, a 4-H program assistant, an office professional/receptionist and an administrative assistant for financial operations. Brown credited the Unified Government and numerous other partners for the local office s success in empowering residents over the years. We ve established many partnerships and collaborations over the years to help us serve our residents better, she said. Our office has helped to serve as the connector that bridges to the services people want and need. K-State Research and Extension is a statewide network of educators sharing unbiased, research-based information and expertise on issues important to Kansans. Wyandotte County staff have access to specialists and agents across the state to help with local challenges.
