3 MEDINA COUNTY 4-H SAUSAGE DINNER FUNDRAISER Sausage Dinner tickets have been distributed to all clubs and should be making their way to each 4-H family. Proceeds from the Sausage Dinner are split between the local 4-H Clubs and County 4-H Council. We are asking that each family sell/buy at least 10 tickets. The plates consist of generous portions of sausage, parsley potatoes, green beans flavored with bacon and onions and a creamy coleslaw, plates sell for $7.00. What a deal! The top seller from each club, selling a minimum of 25 tickets will win $25.00 cash. Money and/or tickets are due back at your March club meeting. PAGE 3 4-H HEALTHY LIFESTYLES INVITATIONAL The classes and resources for the H Healthy Lifestyles Invitational Contest are now available at: Previous contest classes are also posted on the website. The contest is held during Texas 4-H Roundup and is open to intermediate and senior 4-H members. Youth may compete as teams or individuals. PRACTICE CONSUMER DECISION MAKING The Consumer Decision-Making contest is a competitive event that enables 4-H ers to practice making decisions based on information about a situation and four available marketplace options. This contest is an opportunity to practice marketplace knowledge and skills and to compare personal decisions with the decisions from a panel of judges who are knowledgeable about today s marketplace and its various goods and services. Study materials and a more detailed description of the contest are available at: If you want to learn more about the Consumer Decision Making contest plan on attending the practice on February 7 th. We will meet at St Paul Lutheran Church in Hondo from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The 2013 District 10 Consumer Decision Making Contest at S.A.L.E. will be February 16th. 4-H CONSUMER EDUCATION YOUTUBE VIDEOS Wendy Scott, 4-H Specialist, has posted a couple of YouTube videos on 4-H Consumer Decision Making. The link is: H+consumer+decision+making When you go to that site, you will see 4-H Consumer Decision Making Part I and Part II. Please view both of the videos. The videos discuss the Consumer Education project and the Consumer Decision Making contest. The contest portion is broken down into 2 parts - how to coach a team, and a sample class and reasons. Clothing Project Kickoff Extreme Designer March 2 9 am noon The Extreme Designer is a unique opportunity for a team of 4-H members to put their knowledge and skills of fashion design, fiber content, fabric care, teamwork, and public speaking to work. This pilot event mimics some of the Project Runway concepts while soliciting application of those skills 4-H works to develop in its members. Come join in the planning stages of this fun event. Pre-register by February 25 th. You don t need a team to participate. Call the Extension office for more information and to sign up. A flyer with more information can be found in this newsletter. See flyer in this newsletter.

4 PAGE 4 THANK YOU LETTERS Now that the County Livestock Show for 2013 is over, it s time to write the Thank You letters to ALL of your buyers. In addition, be sure to complete your 4-H Project Record form. Your club manager will need to receive your form before your auction check can be released to you. Good Luck to all that will be competing in the major livestock shows!! ANNUAL STOCKSHOW BOARD MEETING The annual meeting of the Medina County Junior Livestock Show has been scheduled. At this meeting the Board of Directors will hear any suggestions for improvements or changes for next year s show. The meeting is open to the public. Date: Tuesday, March 26th Time: 7:00 PM Place: Hondo NEED A LIVESTOCK PROJECT VISIT Contact Jason Ott at the Extension office to schedule an appointment. NO PASS - NO SHOW RULE The No Pass, No Show rule is in effect for all Major Livestock Shows. Academically ineligible exhibitors will not be allowed to show their animal. The animal may not be shown by anyone else. ANIMAL HEALTH REQUIREMENTS If you are entered in a major stock show, make sure you meet all the Animal Health Requirements for that species, prior to the show. A flier of the Animal Health Requirements for the San Antonio Livestock Exposition can be found in this newsletter. LIVESTOCK PROJECT RECORD FORM It s time to start finishing up your project record forms these get confused with the Texas 4-H Recordbook, but are very different. The Livestock Project Record Form is filled out by 4-H livestock exhibitors in regards to their livestock project. The Project Record Form teaches the skill of record keeping, along with showing progress, growth and accomplishments in your livestock project. The record form needs to be given to your club manager along with your thank you notes to buyers as soon as possible after the Medina County Jr Livestock Show. The 4-H Livestock Project Record Form is located on the Medina County Extension website (medina.agrilife.org) under publications, livestock, 4-H Livestock Project Record Form. The Texas 4-H Recordbook is totally optional and can be on any project usually your main 4-H project. Competition for the Texas 4-H Recordbook takes place in June and July. More information on the Texas 4-H Recordbook is explained below. If you have questions on either record form or recordbook please call Debby Bodenchuk at the Extension office. RECORDBOOKS It s time to start keeping records for your Projects. Keeping records is a great way to hold on to your memories about your incredible adventures in 4-H. Record keeping is also a great way to develop skills in time management, communication, setting goals and deadlines, money management and project evaluations. In an effort to update the current recordbook system a committee has developed an online program with a data entry system that easily allows for updates, editing and printing. There will be three (3) levels of recordbooks based on 4-H age (junior, intermediate, and senior). Information requested for each level will progressively add on to each other. The junior & intermediate books are significantly simplified from past recordbooks. The senior level book is similar to the past record book with some minor edits. Parts of the report form will be standardized to allow for ease of completion and judging. Much of the data from previous recordbooks that a member may have saved on their home computer may be cut and pasted into the new form All 4-H members will begin using the new online forms or a new paper form that will be available for download from the Texas 4-H website beginning with the H year. Recordbooks will still be printed and turned in (in hardcopy form) to be judged by the deadline set by your local County Extension Office. This system is available for use at: Watch future newsletters for Recordbook workshops held in Medina County.
