Please complete your tag order form and return it along wi your payment to e Extension office by Monday, August 15. A pre-paid tagging fee must accompany validation tag orders for all livestock. Participants must have reached eir 12, but not eir 18 birday on January 1, 2012 and not be enrolled beyond eir junior year in high school. * Must have reached eir 14 birday for e Houston show. MEDINA COUNTY 4-H AWARDS BANQUET Everyone is invited to attend e Annual 4-H Awards Banquet on Tuesday, August 9. Please see e flyer included in is newsletter for more information. STATE FAIR ENTRIES Exhibitors interested in exhibiting validated cattle or swine projects at e State Fair need to enter ose st projects between August 1 rough e 20 during office hours at e Extension office. Contact Jason Ott for more information Show Pig Shortcourse If a swine project is in your future, is clinic will cover all e various aspects of selecting, feeding and showing a pig. (See attached flyer) QUALITY COUNTS VERIFICATION REQUIRED FOR ALL 2012 TEXAS MAJOR LIVESTOCK SHOWS Starting in 2012, Quality Counts verification will be required for all you exhibiting livestock (market and/or breeding) at major livestock shows in Texas (including e Ft. Wor Livestock Show, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Star of Texas Fair in Austin, San Angelo Livestock Show, Sandhills Stock Show in Odessa, State Fair of Texas in Dallas, and Heart O Texas Fair in Waco). The verification process will require junior exhibitors to pass an online test at measures eir knowledge on quality assurance and character education content items. The Quality Counts Program has now been in existence statewide for six years. Over is time, it has reached an average of 30,000 you per year rough e 4-H and FFA Programs. The program outcomes clearly demonstrate you being more knowledgeable of best management practices associated wi livestock projects. More importantly, e program s impact has demonstrated positive changes in personal character attributes as well as adoption of livestock best management practices. Over ese six years, Quality Counts has been supported and endorsed by every major livestock show in Texas. These livestock shows have been instrumental in helping market e program statewide and have also been a strong partner regarding e educational content developed for e Quality Counts Program. In addition, ese livestock shows have fully endorsed is verification process. Starting in May, you are able to go online to take e test and become verified. A verification number will need to be provided at e time of making an official entry into a Texas major livestock show. Thus, you will need to have completed and passed e test before e major livestock show s entry deadline. A passing score has been determined to be 80%. You educators and e major livestock shows in Texas believe strongly in Quality Counts. Collectively, ey are confident at is significant step of requiring you to be Quality Counts Verified, Verified, starting in 2012, will strengen and enhance e you livestock program in Texas. 3 MEGA MEETING - August 27, 2011 Palo Alto College, San Antonio District 10 Project Development Committees Each committee sponsors an educational workshop and conduct a business meeting to elect new officers and discuss events and activities for e coming year.the Project Committees are encouraged to coordinate some learning experience during e 4-H year related to eir project areas. Volunteer Workshops The District Volunteer Leaders Association provides leadership planning ese workshops and recruiting speakers.workshops focus on a variety of 4-H projects, contests, and 4-H management topics. District 4-H Council Business Meeting The District 4-H Council Officers will conduct a business meeting and coordinate training for District 4-H Council delegates and any oer you who wish to participate in e meeting. District VLAT Business Meeting The District VLAT Officers will conduct e annual business meeting of e association. sessions during e 1 ½ hour time period. (Brazos Building) 1. This schedule will allow 4-H members and adults to network and participate in quality educational sessions as well as stay up to date on business happening in e District 4-H Council VLAT. Below is e schedule for e day. 9:00-9:45 Registration - College Student Center 9:45-1:30 VLAT Silent Auction College Student Center 9:45-10:15 General Session and instructions for e day College Student Center 10:15-12:15 Project Development Committee Training/Workshops at various departments across campus 10:30-12:15 4-H Volunteer Leader Training Concurrent sessions will be offered. Volunteers will be able to attend two 45 minute Heifers Arrive Friday (9/9) 1:00-10:00 p.m. or Saturday (9/10) 1:00-2:00 p.m. Check heifer registration papers. Steer Arrive Friday (9/9) 1:00-10:00 p.m. or Saturday (9/10) Weigh and classify steers. 3-6 p.m. Saturday (9/10) Goats May arrive beginning at 7:00 a.m. Check-in and weigh-in from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on judging/show date September 10 3:00 p.m. September 11 8:00 a.m. September 17 10:00 a.m. Lambs September 18 10:00 a.m. NOTE...ere is no night security for cattle housed overnight. They may arrive on Friday, but it is not required.

4 DISTRICT RECORD BOOK JUDGING July 14 e Record Books from District 10 were judged at e Helotes 4-H Center. Medina County was represented by senior Ryan Saaoff wi his Record Book on his Sheep Project, intermediate 4-H er Rees Saaoff wi his Record Book on his Sheep Project and Jacie Henefey, Intermediate 4-H er, wi her Record Book on her Beef Project. Competition in ese categories is rough and we congratulate ese 4-H ers for eir participation in e district Record Book contest. COUNTY FASHION AND TEXTILE SHOW st June 21 was e County Fashion and Textile Show. Miranda Waechter earned a blue ribbon wi her ree tiered skirt in e casual/construction category. Margaret Jasik earned a blue ribbon wi her pink pj s she entered in e specialty category. Bo Miranda and Margaret are from e Devine Jr 4H Club and is is eir first year in e cloing project. Silia Lopez from e LaCoste 4-H Club entered ree items in e Textile Show. Her entry in e kitchen items category was a dish towel apron and earned a blue ribbon. She also entered a beaded bracelet in e jewelry category and an embellished blue jean pocket purse in e accessory category. Bo of ese entries also earned blue ribbons. All ree contestants were eligible to move up to e District Fashion and Textile Show wi eir entries. DISTRICT FASHION AND TEXTILE SHOW Hondo High School was buzzing wi participants from 22 counties at e District 10 Fashion and Textile Show. Medina county was well represented by Silia Lopez, junior 4-H er from LaCoste 4-H Club. Silia entered ree items in e Textile Show. She was awarded a red ribbon for her dish towel apron in e Kitchen Item category, a blue ribbon for her beaded bracelet in e Jewelry category and a blue ribbon in e Accessories category wi her embellished blue jean pocket purse. This is Silia s first year in e Textile Show. Congratulations Silia!! ANIMALS FOR SALE LAMBS, GOATS, PIGS, RABBITS Breeder lists are available at e Extension office. We also receive flyers on upcoming sales. TEXAS 4-H ROUNDUP In our Summer Newsletter we neglected to mention e Healy Lifestyles Invitational Intermediate team...and we want to make sure ey are recognized and st congratulated for receiving 1 place. The team consisted of: Lorin Haliscak, Alejo Hernandez, Margaret Jasik and Miranda Waechter st Congratulations again on your 1 place award. DISTRICT COUNCIL NEWS... Congratulations to Ryan Saaoff on his new District Council position as Information Officer for District 10! COMMERCIAL HEIFER SHOW Junior Commercial Heifer Show and Sale was added to e Medina County Junior Livestock Show last two years to give 4H and FFA you wi commercial beef project an opportunity for recognition during e stock show. In e inaugural year 10 pens of 3 to 4 head entered e show. A total of 33 head were sold for a sale gross of $39,000 last year wi 19 pens entering e show. Division rules can be found at under publications. Validation for is division will be held on Sunday, September 25 at 5:00pm. Individuals interested in entering is division must complete a commercial heifer nomination form included in is newsletter and submit a $20 nomination fee by September 5. Any prospective exhibitors are encouraged to direct questions to our office. 4-H LIVESTOCK PROJECT CHANGES Medina County Livestock Show - 1. A standard entry deadline of December 15 for all species was created. a. This means entry fees will no longer be due at validation. Exhibitors will work wi agents and ASI to enter show. b. You will still need to pay for validation tags prior to e validation event. c. You must be entered to show. 2. Heifer classes will not be preset. 3. Commercial Heifers will have to pay a pen nomination fee of $20 in addition to an entry fee of $20. a. Prize money will be awarded to top pens in 2012 in addition to proceeds from going rough e heifer auction. 4. Students involved in UIL competitions at e area or state level are allowed to miss e auction wiout penalty.

5 4-H MEETING ATTENDANCE The attendance rule requires at you attend at least 50% of your club meetings to be eligible for 4-H contests. This includes e Medina County Junior Livestock Show. Attendance is counted on a 12 mon basis, starting e mon after each event occurs. You will be allowed to attend no more an two 4-H meetings at a 4-H club in which you are not enrolled.
