3 2016 District Roundup Big Time in D9 - Roundup 2016 will be held April at Lone Star College Montgomery Campus 3200 College Park Drive, Conroe, TX H Contest will be held in one 2-day weekend! It will be like a 4-H-a-palooza-fun for the whole family! 4-H members can participate in one or more contests; everyone can watch most contest and events to learn more; and there will be family activities, including a BBQ cook-off and big award presentations each day! Reasonable accommodations will be made to allow 4-H members to participate in as many contests as they would like. Pine Wood Derby- The District 9 Pinewood Derby is designed to let kids show off what they know about 4-H and anything else kids talk about. While doing so they will be competing against other counties and having lots of fun. If all goes well this will be an exciting event for spectators as well as participants. 4-H Pit Master Food Challenge (BBQ Cook off)- Entry: $20.00 per Brisket, Spare Ribs, and Chicken entry. $5.00 per burger entry per team. Enough meat and beans to serve the county delegation in attendance at Big Time in D9 (coordinate with other county BBQ cook-off teams) Burger Bonanza entry consists of 2 dressed ready-to-eat 1/2 pound burgers cut in half (each half should be secured by tooth picks). Added Award: $ to the Best Youth Burger cooked on a Gas Grill! 4-H SET: Research Poster Contest- The 4-H SET Research Poster Contest will allow youth to apply the scientific method to the subject matter they have learned through their 4-H projects. The scientific method is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions. Scientists use the scientific method to explore relationships in nature. The research poster contest will allow youth an opportunity to display and explain through the scientific method their project, research and observations. Ag Products ID Contest- 20 Texas agricultural products are selected and exhibited at separate stations. Contestants select the correct identification of each product from four possible answers. Following, the product identification, each station has one multiple choice question pertaining to the product on display. Questions can be general to the industry that produced the product, (i.e. Texas national ranking, economic impact to Texas, general nutritional content, region of production) and specific to the individual product that is on display (i.e. cooking method, use, growing season, specific nutrition of the cut or variety). Contestants are given 40 seconds at each station to answer both questions. Please refer to the Product list for suggested products and the resource guide for study materials. Products and resources are listed in the samples rules and the Agricultural Products Manual. Consumer Decision Making- Demonstrate skill in making decisions based on facts Apply knowledge and experience in consumer education by analyzing consumer situations Experience making choices among selected marketplace options. Develop and strengthen reasoning ability in consumer skills. Demonstrate their ability to organize thoughts and express them orally in a clear, confident manner. Duds to Dazzle- Youth in the 4-H Clothing & Textile Project learn about fibers and fabrics, wardrobe selection, clothing construction, comparison shopping, fashion interpretation, understanding of style and design, proper grooming, poise in front of others, and personal presentation skills. The Texas 4-H Duds to Dazzle Clothing & Textile Competition goes one step beyond, utilizing the knowledge and skills learned in the project, while increasing awareness of the impact of the clothing and textile industry on the environment, specifically the waste stream. In the competition, teams of 4-H members will redesign and re-purpose discarded garments or textiles into new, viable consumer products. Educational Presentations/Public Speaking- Educational presentations are planned talks in which one or more 4-H members teach others about a project or activity. The talks are ways of sharing useful information and of showing and telling others how to make or do something. Two types of 4-H educational presentations are demonstrations and illustrated talks. These types of talks are effective because people learn faster and remember longer if they see as well as hear. Fashion Show- To recognize 4-H members who have excelled in clothing projects and exhibit skills in the application of knowledge of fibers and fabrics to wardrobe selection, clothing construction, or comparison shopping, fashion interpretation and understanding of style, good grooming and poise in front of others, and modeling and presentation of themselves and their garments. Fashion Story Board- To recognize 4-H members who have excelled in clothing projects and exhibit skills in the application of knowledge of fibers and fabrics to wardrobe selection, clothing construction, or comparison shopping, fashion interpretation and understanding of style, good grooming and poise in front of others, and modeling and presentation of themselves and their garments. Food Challenge- Provide an opportunity for each participant to exhibit their knowledge and skills when preparing and presenting a dish. Provide an opportunity for each participant to learn from other team members and to promote teamwork. Empower youth to participate in a public speaking role. Provide leadership opportunities for youth. Give 4-H members the opportunity to participate in a new exciting 4-H opportunity. Food Show- The food and nutrition project helps participants learn to make healthy food choices, reduce disease and illness risks, and gain knowledge of nutrition. Major learning experiences are centered around nutrition, menu planning, food buying and preparation, food safety, careers, and cultural influences. The Food Show is open to all 4-H members. The Food Show provides for educational and personal development and recognizes youth who excel in the 4-H Food and Nutrition program. Healthy Lifestyles- The 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Invitational provides youth in the junior, intermediate and senior age divisions the opportunity to participate in a competitive event and utilize the knowledge and skills gained through participation in 4-H healthy lifestyles programs. With a set-up similar to the Consumer Decision Making Contest, the healthy lifestyles invitational consists of two parts: (1) Judging participants will be presented with a scenario and must individually rank the four products/choices based upon the situation at-hand; (2) Presentation teams are presented with a scenario and must work together within a given amount of time to analyze the situation, develop a solution and make a team presentation to a panel of judges. Leaders 4 Life- The Leaders 4 Life Skill-A-Thon is a competitive event designed to challenge county 4-H council teams in their leadership skills, parliamentary procedure, and service learning. Photography- To develop life skills in composition, light, story line, posing and awareness. To encourage 4-H members to use photography as a meaningful communications tool in their lives. To provide photography project showcase opportunity for 4-H members. To continue sharing the message of 4-H. To utilize photographs which can promote and strengthen the 4-H program. Photography Judging Contest- The photography project encourages self-expression and teaches proper use of photographic equipment and developing processes. Photography provides opportunities for career exploration and promoting 4-H. Produce Judging- The objective of this activity is to teach participants as consumers how to select good produce, and as produce buyers/horticulture commodity producers, what sells best to consumers. This is an individual activity only. Quiz Bowls- valuable teaching technique regardless of the subject matter being quizzed. They present project information in a semi-competitive setting characterized by attitudes of friendliness, cooperation and fairness. A quiz bowl is not meant to be a memorization process, in that members only study questions and know the answers to those questions. It is a motivational tool to provide a fun way to encourage members to learn project information. Robotics Challenge- is a contest designed to allow 4-H members to demonstrate their robotics, engineering, and problem solving skills. From a set of challenges revealed at the contest and within an allotted amount of time, teams of 3 to 5 members will build, program, and test their robot. Teams will then attempt to earn point by completing as many challenges as possible. Share the Fun- To perpetuate the reputation of Texas 4-H and Youth Development as an educational program. To determine top placing teams and individuals in Share the Fun and qualify contestants for State 4-H Roundup To provide recognition for project work and skills development in the areas of public speaking and subject matter expertise To promote teamwork for 4-H members and adult leaders and expand their knowledge of 4-H opportunities To provide 4-H members the opportunity to compare the skills they have gained with those of other members and with their own previous performance. To provide 4-H members with an opportunity to develop and practice public speaking and presentation skills. Wildlife Challenge- Wildlife species include mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects and more. All wildlife depends on native plants to complete their habitat requirements. In today s natural world, most wildlife habitat requires management due to the changes occurring steadily since our country began. Developing an appreciation and understanding of our natural world at an early age increases the likelihood that wildlife habitat will continue to be managed properly to support an abundance of wildlife species throughout the country. This is the ultimate wildlife challenge.
