3 EEA Scholarship Opportunities There is a scholarship available from the Texas Extension Education Association for graduating seniors that turned in a 4-H Recordbook for this current year. The application and Recordbook should be turned in to the Extension Office by February 14, 2014!!! Feeding Livestock Projects Ideally, parents utilize the livestock project as a means to teach their children (or any other kids they may be helping) about responsibility, accountability, dedication, effort and sportsmanship among other things. One lesson to be learned is that pertaining to asking for help. If you don t know, ask a question! Finding accurate information is easier than you think. However, it begins with realizing you don t know and then asking a question! Identifying a good resource for information is also relatively easy. Ag teachers, county agents, project leaders and successful feeders all have a knowledge base and a willingness to help. However, questions must be asked before answers can be provided! Kids need to learn there is nothing wrong with not knowing (definition of ignorance); but, choosing to remain ignorant is wrong! ASK QUESTIONS! LIVESTOCK PROJECT SELECTION of responsibility and have fun, most any animal will suffice. If the goal is to win a major stock show, average quality genetics fall short. Try to select an animal that fits the goal. Careful selection is the first step towards success. Also, parents of young or small exhibitors should be mindful of the eventual size of the animal in September. Individuals needing help should contact their supervising AST or CEA. Families that have been successful in the show ring are also excellent resources! Get a list of the champion exhibitors from previous years and give them a call. One consistent message you will hear is the quantity of work invested months prior to the show. Those families may have started with really good animals, but it was their daily effort that forged their success. Round-Up County Roundup consists of educational presentations (method demonstrations/illustrated talks) and Share-the-Fun (similar to a talent show dancing, singing, instruments, acting, and poetry). Food Show / Food Challenge - March 8,2014 Fashion Show - March 16, 2014 Roundup - March 16, H and FFA exhibitors are starting to locate and purchase livestock projects for the 2013 Burleson County Fair. Time and experience play a vital role in knowing where to look and what to buy. First time or inexperienced exhibitors can feel overwhelmed with the process of project selection. However, adhering to a few basic guidelines can make the task a bit smoother: 1st- no impulse buying! 2nd- second opinions are quite useful, and 3rd- if you ask a breeder a question, listen to the answer. The truth of the matter is, no animal can escape their genetic potential. Average or run-of-the-mill animals may be inexpensive, but they rarely compete with genetics that have been developed for the show ring. Before setting out to purchase a livestock project, identify a set of goals. If the primary goal is to develop a sense Burleson County 4-H & Burleson County AgriLife Extension Extension/ COUNTY CAMP IN BROWNWOOD County Camp is a co ed camp that features tradi onal camp experiences and offers ac vi es such as kayaking, swimming, shoo ng sports, environmental educa on, art, dancing and much more. 5 Burleson County Fair 2014 BCF Turkey and Broiler Meetings Taking a megabyte out of hunger BCF turkey exhibitors will have the opportunity to attend one of two educational programs to be eligible to show turkey hens at the 2013 BCF. The 1st opportunity will be Thursday, March 6 and this will be for turkey exhibitors only. The 2nd meeting will be held Thursday, March 27 and is open to both turkey and broiler exhibitors. 4-H and FFA members (or a parent) wanting to exhibit a turkey hen (no Toms this year) must attend 1 of the 2 scheduled meetings. Exhibitors can order from 1-20 hens and they will be distributed on May 21. Reminder: No family orders and if a bird loses a wing-band that bird is no longer eligible to be shown. BCF broiler exhibitors will have the opportunity to attend one of two educational programs to be eligible to show broilers in the 2014 BCF. The 1st opportunity will be Thursday, March 27 and this will be for turkey and broiler exhibitors. The 2nd meeting will be held Thursday, June 12 and is open to broiler exhibitors only. 4-H and FFA members wanting to exhibit a pen of broilers must attend 1 of the 2 scheduled meetings. BCF Commercial Heifer Validation Burleson County 4-H and FFA members planning on participating in the Commercial Heifer Show at the 2014 Burleson County Fair must have their heifers validated on Saturday, March 1 at the Caldwell Livestock Commission from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Individual heifers will be classed into one of the following divisions: 1) Brahman x Hereford or F-1; 2) Black Brahman Derivative or; 3) All Other Breeds. On March 1, parents and exhibitors need to complete all necessary paperwork BEFORE unloading cattle. Remember, the validation process costs $10 per head and the official entry is $30 per pen of heifers, all of which is to be paid on March 1. If you have questions or conflicts with the scheduled validation date, contact Mr. Charles Doonan or Mr. Dennis Gaas well BEFORE March 1. In short, Don t miss March 1st FORMS FROM THE BCF All 2013 BCF exhibitors with sale receipts over $600 should have received an IRS 1099 from the BCFA. If you didn t, contact the BCF immediately so that they can get one mailed. Everyone pays taxes of some kind. Taxes support local, state and federal government in one way or another. Originally, government (regardless of level or size) was designed to provide services to citizens in the form of organized armed forces or security forces, development of roadways, etc In relation to taxes, the concept of fair share is arguable in every way imaginable. None the less, taxes are a part of life and if someone has a tax obligation then they prospered in some way, and that s a good thing! 4-H Rules for Burleson County Fair Reminder: 4-H members must attend at least five (5) club meetings (credit for one per month) OR four (4) club meetings and participate in one 4-H activity before they are eligible to participate in the 2014 Burleson County Fair. A list of acceptable 4-H activities can be found in the Family Handbook. Please make every effort to satisfy these requirements before summer as many clubs do not meet once school is out in May. 4 WHAT? This year, your Southeast District 9 4-H Council is taking a megabyte out of hunger! According to food banks within the Oh So Fine D9, as well as the Feed America formula, $1 can feed 4 persons. Our goal is to provide 100,000 meals to the community. In order for us to reach our goal we need YOUR help! So what can YOU do as a 4-Her to participate in this very important and broad reaching community service project? HOW? You can: Have a car wash where people give donations in return for their car being washed. Hold a fun run or mud run which endorses 4-H and raises money. Put on a play day for your county s horse project members and open it to the community. Sell concessions at a local high school football game or other public event with permission. Solicit donations from local businesses. Participate at local events (i.e. fairs, festivals, shows) as a county or club to raise money. Collect donations at Tractor Supply during clover campaigns. Boys vs. Girls loose change collection at council meetings. Be Creative! WHEN? Feel free to start raising funds as soon as you want! All money will be gathered prior to or at the Big Time in D9 event (May 2-3, 2014). At that time we hope to have reached our goal of $25,000 raised to provide the 100,000 meals to take that megabyte out of hunger! So put your best foot forward, and continue to make the best better! *** for more information please contact our office (979) *** The Elizabeth Lutheran Community Pantry would like to sincerely thank all of the 4-H Groups who donated so generously during our 4th Annual Food Drive! Thank you for caring for others who are less fortunate. Your donations help families right here in Burleson County. Each month, we provide groceries for these families; not to feed them all month, but to help them get through the month. We would be unable to do that without help from our community. You all have made a difference in these families lives! It seems that the youth always step up when it comes time to help. You all should be so proud of yourselves! With sincere gratitude, Becky Goetsch, Coordinator

Deadline: April 10, 2014 $20 per entry per age division For more information go to eventsandcontest/bigtime/bbq-cook-off/ For the past couple of years a BBQ Cook-Off has been held during Big Time in D9. The main purpose of this contest was to provide another avenue to experience the food & nutrition project as well as provide an evening meal for everyone at BTD9. Participation has been somewhat thin for a variety of reasons like 1)to far to drag a pit; 2)we don t have a big fancy pit; 3)we didn t know about it and; 4)it s just too much! In response, the planning committee added another category to address the previous four reasons. The Burger Bonanza will take place with the BBQ Cook-Off and the committee will provide a grill to cook the burgers (if you let us know)! Entry costs a mere $5 and consists of two (2) dressed (ready to eat) burgers. Judging will take place at 1pm on Saturday, May 3rd. Teams can bring their own fixings to create their masterpiece or simply use the basics (lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and cheese) provided by the committee. The BBQ Cook-Off will still take place as it has in the past. Complete rules can be found at the D9 4-H Round-up website. Sincerely, 5 Tina Roehling CEA-FCS
