Comments from 2013 BCF Goat/Lamb Judge Mr. Chad Coburn Structural correctness is the founda on to a good market lamb or goat. Obviously, muscle is also an important criteria in selec ng any market animal. I like lambs and goats to be expressively muscled over their rack and loin and progress into a big shapely leg. Animals should exhibit length of front, length of loin and hind saddle, and levelness of hip. I like animals that have nice shape to their rib, nice balanced and are propor onal from fore to rear flank. Finally, they need to be sound on their feet and legs. Comments from 2013 BCF Swine Judge Mr. Edward Schneider I like hogs that are well balanced with as much depth and width as possible yet remain rela vely sound. I like hogs that are square on their feet and legs. Color and breed make no difference as long as they fit my earlier descrip on. And, I do like middle and some so ness of center, but they can get too so. I do like to see shapely muscle; but, not hard muscle. Page 3

6 FOCUSING ON IMPROVEMENT Prac ce makes perfect is a phrase poin ng towards an important message improvement takes effort! Families choosing to par cipate in major stock shows are to be commended for their effort to improve their ability to select, feed and exhibit show animals. Improving one s ability to feed and show animals is a hands on ac vity. However, knowledge can be gained by a ending shows and simply watching what s happening. See what others are doing! Examine showmanship techniques! Study animals in the ring and listen to comments provided by the judge! All of this can increase knowledge and help prepare for other shows. In school, young students are encouraged to read and accumulate AR Points. In doing so, their individual ability to read improves, allowing them to perform at a higher level in school. Throughout life we face new and different challenges. How we deal with these opportuni es will dictate our eventual success or opportunity to try again. Prac cing is one way to help ensure we succeed. The need to prac ce doesn t end a er high school sports or junior high UIL compeons. The ability and dedica on to PRACTICE are some of the lessons exhibi ng livestock should develop in 4 H and FFA members. In reality, what does it ma er if a child learns to properly select, feed and show an animal? What does ma er is that the child learned how to dedicate themselves to the idea of improvement, regardless of the event, contest or ac vity. Parents can use showing livestock as a tool to teach their children this important lifelong characteris c. Any registered 4 H member can par cipate in any project or contest, all that is needed is a desire to learn and a li le bit of pa ence and persistence in learning the requirements. And, certainly a dedicated adult leader willing to assist is really helpful too! Some other contests that are a part of this big weekend include: Science, Engineering, and Technology (S.E.T.)
