2 IT S THE BIG TIME IN D9 4-H ROUNDUP 2013, APRIL 26-27TH, ALVIN, TX The District 4-H Program will run similar to last year! 4-H contests will be held in one 2-day weekend! It will be like a 4H-a-palooza-o-fun for the whole family! 4-H members can participate in one or more contests; everyone can watch most contests and events to learn more; and there will be family activities, including BBQ cook-off; and big award presentations each day! You can come for one day or both. You can stay for a few hours or the whole time. Advantages are: 1. There is only one weekend you will have to schedule around other activities 2. Only one weekend to travel for almost all district contests 3. There will be a good balance between competition and fun! You will have to plan and prepare carefully if you want to participate in several contests (so that is a possible drawback to those of us who wait to the last minute!) reasonable accommodations will be made to allow 4-H members to participate in as many contests as they would like. 4-H Membership Membership in 4-H means being registered on 4-H Connect, paying the annual membership fee and being approved as a member at the county, district and state level. Just attending monthly 4-H club meetings does not count! Beginning in September 2013, attending club meetings will not count (towards the magic number of 5) if the child is not registered on 4-H Connect! TEXAS 4 H ROUNDUP GUIDELINES To view or print a copy of the Texas 4 H Roundup Guidelines please visit: h p://texas4 h.tamu.edu/roundup and look in the Resources sec on of the page for the pdf file tled Roundup Guidelines. This guide outlines the various contests that will be held at the State 4 H Roundup and at the District 9 Roundup. It indicates the objec ves of the contests as well as the how the contests will be scored. When developing a educa onal presenta on, it helps to know how they are scored so special emphasis can be placed in the areas worth the most points. The same category guidelines are applied to County and District Roundup Events. There are several Invita onal events that have been added to State Round Up, check it out! 4 ARE YOU READY? Steer and commercial heifer exhibitors have already tagged their animals for the 2013 BCF. Families showing market goats and lambs have started looking for animals too. Experienced families realize things need to be ready before an animal is brought home. Inexperienced families can use a li le informa on BEFORE THEY GET AN ANIMAL. Here are two main points to keep in mind. 1 st Pens should be completed, secure and free from obvious problems that could poten ally cause injury or death. 2 nd Fresh feed (for that specie) and water must be onhand. No fy your feed dealer as to when you will be ge ng an animal, so they will have feed available! LOCATING LIVESTOCK PROJECTS 4 H and FFA members needing assistance loca ng and possibly securing livestock projects for the 2013 Burleson County Fair should contact their supervising Ag Teacher or County Agent as soon as possible. Addi onally, there are a number of adult volunteers willing to help exhibitors with projects. Just remember, don t wait too long or you might miss out! 2013 BURLESON COUNTY FAIR RABBIT EXHIBITORS Burleson County 4 H members interested in showing rabbits at the 2013 Burleson County Fair must a end (or a family member) the rabbit mee ng scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Monday, April 22nd or Thursday, May 9th at the EXPO Building in Caldwell. WHO S THE JUDGE? 2013 BCF Steers & Heifers Same as last year Poultry Dale Hya Rabbits Robert Lawrence Swine Edward Schneider Goats and Lambs Chad Coburn 2013 Burleson County Fair Books are in! Get yours from your club manager or come by the Extension Office to pick up a copy. Basics of Raising a Show Animal Regardless of specie, a few basic principles can be applied when trying to raise a blue ribbon show animal. Raising a livestock project can be separated into several parts or phases. For this discussion, three parts will be addressed. First is gene cs. Every animal is limited by their gene cs, or, the characteris cs passed on to them by their sire and dam. Essen ally, these characteris cs represent everything a par cular animal can be! Gene cally speaking, there is a huge difference between pasture livestock and show stock. Once valida on is completed, the first part is done and cannot be changed. Next, the exhibitor must feed and care for the animal in such a way to allow it to reach its full gene c poten al. Feed and care is the second part. Facility, feed & water quan ty and quality as well as the general environment significantly influence whether or not the animal reaches its gene c poten al. Too li le feed limits growth while excess feed causes other problems. Poor quality feed may not provide all the good things required for sustained growth. POOR QUALITY WATER WILL LIMIT ALL CONSUMPTION. Water quality can be influenced by temperature, taste, freshness, and cleanliness. Water source loca on can also affect consump on. Livestock should be calm and comfortable in their environment. Pens should be located in substan al air flow away from stress causing things such as barking dogs, air compressors and banging barn doors to name a few. The size of the animal s pen should allow moderate movement by the animal. Too big and the animal will be hard to catch. Too small and cleanliness becomes an issue. Health will be the final part. Healthy animals are a by product of daily monitoring and effort, not a mere coincidence. Health can be separated into internal and external considera ons. Livestock need to remain free of internal parasites and other bacteria or problems that might limit growth. Ruminant animals need hay or some type of forage on a daily basis to keep the rumen healthy and func oning. External health considera ons would be parasites like lice, fleas, flies as well as fungal problems such as ring worm. Addi onally, sharp edges on loose n, wire, screws and nails can poten ally cut livestock. Families and exhibitors that are successful in the show ring know blue ribbons and championships are earned one day at a me! PAGE 3

5 Comments from 2013 BCF Poultry Judge Dr. Dale Hya The criteria for top placing market poultry are basically the same regardless of the species. It boils down to a breast meat yield compe on. The breast should be wide in the chest area and con nue to be wide along and down a rela vely long keel, resembling a rectangular configura on. Broilers are exhibi ng in pens of three and there is some emphasis on similarity or uniformity between the birds however, major emphasis should always lean towards meat. Uniformly poor or marginal broilers will not win the show; never leave your big bird at home STATE FAIR OF TEXAS BARROW TAGS 4 H and FFA members wan ng to show a barrow at the 2013 State Fair of Texas must validate their project during June 30, Barrow tags must be ordered by April 30 th at a cost of $10 per tag. A er the 30 th, tags will cost $20 each. Reminder: Valida on is not an entry. RECORDBOOK TRAINING, APRIL 23rd Maybe you ve heard a lot about 4 H recordbooks, and think you may want to do one, but you don t know where to start. We have set aside the evening of April 23rd to work with you! We will meet at 7:00pm in the Extension Office conference room. If you have a book started, bring it with you and we can help from there. If you don t even know where to begin, come on to the training and we can help you get started. Please call the Extension Office to let us know you are coming so that we have enough copies made. Note: This training is for 4 H recordbooks for all 4 H projects. This training is not for Commercial Heifer recordbooks. Goat and Lamb Valida on Tags for the 2013 State Fair of Texas 4 H and FFA members wan ng to exhibit a meat goat or market lamb at the 2013 State Fair of Texas must have their animals (wethers only) validated in the Statewide Valida on Program in June. However, tags must be ordered first! April 15th is the deadline to order meat goat and market lamb valida on tags for the State Fair of Texas. Cost is $10 each and should be paid for when ordered. Order by no fying your AST or call the Extension office. MARCH LIVESTOCK JUDGING RESULTS At the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo we had many kids represen ng Burleson County.
