Buck St Ste #105 Caldwell, TX Phone: (979) Fax: (979) Club News Snook 4-H- will be holding its annual Drive Thru BBQ and Bake Sale on Sunday, January 15, 2017 from 11:00-1:00. In conjunction with the BBQ the Food and Nutrition Group will have a bake sale to raise funds for needy families during the 2017 Thanksgiving Holiday. The meal will consist of half a chicken, sausage, potatoes and beans, if you need tickets contact any Snook 4-H member. Our January meeting will be on Sunday, January H Horse Club will not meet in January or February The club will resume meetings in March 2017 through the summer. Stitch & Design Club would like to invite everyone to our Winter Workshop on Monday, January 16 at the Expo Center. It will be from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The cost is $25.00 for pre-registration with the Extension Office or $30.00 at the door. We have many activities planned for a fun-filled day. We will begin forming our Duds to Dazzle teams in February. If you are interested, please contact Sharon Kovar at Frenstat 4-H will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 4th at 7:00 p.m. at the Frenstat Recreation Center. 2 January 6 th -8 th Teen Retreat January 6 th -8 th at the Texas 4-H Center, Brownwood, TX The Texas 4-H Center is hosting Teen Retreat. This weekend long program is for youth in grades 8-12 to learn about specific activities inside 4-H. County Agents, 4-H Specialists and the 4-H Center Summer Staff will be leading the programs. This year s educational sessions include: Vet Science Gardening Leadership Healthy Lifestyles As always, we will have a 4-H dance on Saturday Night. Cost is $120 for youth or $90 for adults. January 11 th - Let it Sew, Let it Sew, Let it Sew Winter Workshop Last day to register for the 4-H Stitch & Design Winter Workshop held on January 16 th. Please see the last page for more details. January 12 th - 4-H Robotics Caldwell Middle School 1 st meeting of the new year. January th - Refashion Retreat January 13-15, 2017 Texas 4-H Center Brownwood, TX This weekend long retreat is open to junior, intermediate, and senior 4-H members features educational sessions conducted by the Texas 4-H Clothing & Textiles Advisory Board and 4-H Agents and specialists. They will be conducting hands-on educational workshops related to the 4-H Clothing & Textiles Project. The highlight of the retreat is for 4-H members to use their consumer buying skills to purchase items from a local thrift store and then refurbish them into a new garment, which they will model in a style show the last morning of the retreat. Each youth member must be accompanied by an adult. One adult may chaperone multiple kids. All adults must enroll as a 4-H volunteer have a verified background check and complete child protection training in 4-H Connect prior to camp. Cost: $120 for youth $90 for Adults To register go to texas4hcenter.tamu.edu January 16 th Let it Sew, Let it Sew, Let it Sew 4-H Stitch & Design Winter Workshop January 18 th - 4-H Council & ALA Meeting in Deanville at the Fire Station at 7P.M. January nd 4-H Archery Family Camp The Texas 4-H Center is proud to be hosting a weekend long family style archery camp January 20-22, This program is designed as an introduction to the archery project within Texas 4-H. No experience is necessary but please remember that any youth that want to participate in a shooting sports competition later on will need a certified coach to take them. This camp is family-style, meaning that each youth participant must have an adult attending with them. One adult may chaperone multiple youth. Any adult attending 4-H archery Family Camp must be currently enrolled in 4-H Connect as a volunteer with a completed background check and child protection training. No certification option is available for participants. The cost for the program is $170 for hotel-style lodging, or $145 for dormitory-style lodging. January nd - 4-H Leaders/Coach Training The D9 4-H Youth Development Program will be offering a 4-H Leaders/Coaches Training in Somerville. Registration is open on 4-H Connect now and will close on Monday, January 9, January 27 th - Beekeeping Essay Contest The 2017 Beekeeping Essay contest information. This year s essay will be submitted online through Texas 4-H Connect. Essay Topic: How can MP3 (Managed Pollinator Protection Plan) more effectively protect honey bees from pesticide exposure? Awards: Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners from Texas 4-H: 1 st place $300, 2 nd place $200, 3 rd place $100. January th - Yeague Somerville High School th st. Money has to be received from the buyers, thank you letters received from the exhibitors, and all accounting is double and triple checked to eliminate any mistakes. 3 4-H Day at the State Capitol February 8 th, 2017 Austin, TX This day is designed for 4-H members to learn more about our state legislative process, see our legislators in session, & to visit their respective elected officials. Open for registration January 9 th at Noon closes January 27 th or when event is filled with 250 youth and 50 adults. Cost: $30 includes lunch and a T-shirt EEA Scholarship Opportunity There is a scholarship available from the Texas Extension Educating Association for graduating seniors that turned in a 4-H Record Book for this current year. The application and record book should be turned in to the Extension Office by February 15, National 4-H Conference March 25 th -30 th The National 4-H Conference is a yearly opportunity for 4-H members from all over the nation to gather together and discuss societal topics. Participants are selected by their state 4-H program & attend as a delegation Texas 4-H Photography Contest Theme: Reflections These are photos shot off any natural or artificial reflective surface. A well executed shot will be able to show perfect symmetry or a slightly distorted shot. Examples of photographs in the theme would be, but not limited to, photos from lakes, a window pane, a mirror, or a polished/waxed car. 4-H members are encouraged to be creative when thinking about reflections in everyday life and where they are seen. Changes to rules for Photos must be 8x10 in size with a quality resolution. Over the past two years the majority of disqualifications in the contest have occurred when the photograph is too small to be viewed by the judge when downloaded from 4-H Connect. Additionally, please remember that all photos must be original work of the 4-H member submitting the photograph. No photograph can be submitted which has been taken by other 4-H members, a family member, or any printed/digital source. All photos will be scanned through a reverse image search. Entry period: April 1-15, 2017 though 4-H Connect. Participation is limited because the focus is not on the development of the participant but on development of the 4-H program. To this end, you are trained to enhance the 4-H program on the county level. Participants are also used as a sounding board changes in the District 4-H program.

Entry: $20.00 per brisket, spare ribs, and chicken entry. $5.00 per burger entry per team. Enough meat & beans to serve the county delegation in attendance at Big Time in D9 (coordinate with other county BBQ cook-off teams) Burger Bonanza entry consists of 2 dressed ready-to-eat ½ lbs burgers cut in half (each half should be secured by toothpicks). Added Award: $200 to the Best Youth Burger cooked on a gas grill! 4-H Discover Scientific Method Research Poster Contest May 13, 2017 Entry/Registration Deadline: April 16 th per person payable on 4-H Connect. Entry Form (abstract with your agent s signature) to snolen@ag.tamu.edu by April 10, The 4-H Discover Scientific Method Research Poster Contest will allow youth to apply the scientific method to the subject matter they have learned through their 4-H projects. The scientific method is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions. Scientists use the scientific method to explore relationships in nature. The research poster contest will allow youth an opportunity to display and explain through the scientific method their project, research, & observations. Ag Products ID Contest May 13, 2017 Entry/Registration Deadline: April 16 th 20 TX agricultural products are selected and exhibited at separate stations. Contestants select the correct identification of each product from 4 possible answers. Following, the product identification, each station has one multiple choice question pertaining to the product on display. Questions can be general to the industry that produced the product and specific to the individual product that is on display. Contestants are given 40 seconds at each station to answer both questions. Please refer to Product list for suggested products and the resource guide for study materials. Products and resources are listed in the samples rules and the Agricultural Products Manual. Consumer Decision Making May 13, 2017 Entry/Registration Deadline: April 16, 2017 Description/Objective: Demonstrate skill in making decisions based on facts, apply knowledge and experience in consumer education by analyzing consumer situations, experience making choices among selected marketplace options, develop and strengthen reasoning ability in consumer skills, and demonstrate their ability to organize thoughts and express them orally in a clear, confident manner. Duds to Dazzle May 13, 2017 Description: Youth in the 4-H Clothing & Textiles Project learn about fibers and fabrics, wardrobe selection, clothing construction, comparison shopping, fashion interpretation, understanding of style and design, proper grooming, pose in front of others, and personal presentation skills. The Texas 4-H Duds to Dazzle Clothing & Textile Competition goes one step beyond, utilizing the knowledge and skills learned in the project, while increasing awareness of the impact of the clothing and textiles industry on the environment, specifically the waste stream. In the competition, teams of 4-H members will redesign and re-purpose discarded garments or textiles into new, viable consumer products. Educational Presentations/Public Speaking May 12, 2017 Description/Objective: Educational presentations are planned talks in which one or more 4-H members teach others about project or activity. The talks are ways of sharing useful information and of showing and telling others how to make or do something. 2 types of 4-H educational presentations are demonstrations and illustrated talks. These types of talks are effective because people learn faster and remember longer if they see as well as hear. The greatest value of demonstrations and illustrated talks, however, is to the 4-H members who plan, prepare, and present them. Every 4-H member profits in some way from planning and presenting an educational presentation. Fashion Story Board May 12, 2017 Description/Objective: The 4-H Fashion Story board is an industryinspired method of displaying of original designs. The best story boards create vivid visual images that are interesting and appealing to viewers. The story board tells the story of the designer s idea. The story board includes original illustrations and flats, as well as, additional materials that have influenced the unique design. The purpose of the Fashion Story Board contest is to give 4-H members an opportunity to gain knowledge of the career responsibilities of a fashion designer and illustrator, enhance creativity and originality, and develop visual communication skills. 4-H members must submit a story board on the day of the contest that provides a solution to the following design brief. Fashion Show May 12, 2017 Description/Objective:To recognize 4-H members who have excelled in clothing projects and exhibit skills in the application of knowledge of fibers and fabrics to wardrobe selection, clothing construction, or comparison shopping, fashion interpretation and understanding of style, good grooming and poise in front of others, and modeling and presentation of themselves and their garments. Food Challenge May 12-13, 2017 Description/Objective: Provide an opportunity for each participant to exhibit their knowledge and skills when preparing and presenting a dish. Provide an opportunity for each participant to learn from other team members and to promote teamwork. Empower youth to participate in a public speaking role. Provide leadership opportunities for youth. Give 4-H members the opportunity to participate in a new exciting 4-H opportunity. Food Show May 12, 2017 Description/Objective: the food and nutrition project helps participants learn to make healthy food choices, reduce disease and illness risks, and gain knowledge of nutrition. Major learning experiences are centered around nutrition, menu planning, food buying and preparation, food safety, careers, and cultural influences. The food show is open to all 4-H members. The food show provides for educational and personal development and recognizes youth who excel in the 4-H food and nutrition program. Healthy Lifestyles May 13, 2017 Description/Objective: The 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Invitational provides youth in the junior, intermediate and senior age divisions the opportunity to participate in a competitive event and utilize the knowledge and skills gained through participation in 4-H healthy lifestyles programs. With a set-up similar to the consumer decision making contest, the healthy lifestyles invitational consists of two parts: (1) Judging-participants will be presented with a scenario and must individually rank the four products/choices based upon the situation at-hand. (2) Presentation- teams are presented with a scenario and must work together within a given amount of time to analyze the situation, develop a solution and make a team presentation to a panel of judges. Leaders 4 Life May 13, 2017 Description/Objective: The Leaders 4 Life Skill-A-Thon is a competitive event designed to challenge county 4-H council teams in their leadership skills, parliamentary procedure, and service learning. Photography *Important Note: This is not a qualifying contest for the State Photography Contest* May 11-13, 2017 District Round Up) Entry/Registration Deadline: Online entry using 4-H CONNECT closes March 26, 2017 Entry Fee: $5 for each photo entered Photography Judging Contest May 13, 2017 Description: The photography project encourages self-expression and teaches proper use of photogenic equipment and developing process. Photography provides opportunities for career exploration and promoting 4-H. Participation in this contest does not have a defined schedule for each contestants participation. Participants can participate anytime between 8 and noon. Produce Judging May 13, 2017 Entry Fee: TBA Description/Objectives: The objective of this activity is to teach participants as consumers how to select good produce, and as produce buyers/horticulture commodity producers, what sells best to consumers. This is an individual activity only. Produce will be either fruits or vegetables that are commonly grown or consumed in Texas. Activity will consist of four produce classes. Each produce class will have four samples of the same produce. Participants are to rank the four samples in order of highest to lowest according to the judging criteria and fill out the corresponding bubble on their scantron. Cuts on points will be decided at the activity. The highest total score is points are possible per class. Results will be posted online. Quiz Bowls (Beef, Horse, Nutrition, and Swine) May 11, 2017 Quiz bowls are a valuable teaching technique regardless of the subject matter being quizzed. They present project information in a semi-competitive setting characterized by attitudes of friendliness, cooperation and fairness. A quiz bowl is not meant to be a memorization process, in that members only study questions and know the answers to those questions. It is a motivational tool to provide a fun way to encourage members to learn project information. Robotics Challenge May 12, 2017 Description: The Robotics Challenge is a contest designed to allow 4-H members to demonstrate their robotics, engineering, and problem solving skills. From a set of challenges revealed at the contest and within an allotted amount of time, teams of 3 to 5 members will build, program, and test their robot. Teams will then attempt to earn point by completing as many challenges as possible. Share the Fun May 12-13, 2017 To perpetuate the reputation of Texas 4-H and Youth Development as an educational program. To determine top placing teams and individuals in Share the Fun and qualify contestants for State 4-H Roundup To provide recognition for project work and skills development in the areas of public speaking and subject matter expertise. To promote teamwork for 4-H members and adult leaders and expand their knowledge of 4-H opportunities To provide 4-H members the opportunity to compare the skills they have gained with those of other members and with their own previous performance To provide 4-H members with an opportunity to develop and practice public speaking and presentation skills. Vet Science Skillathon May 12, 2017 Description: The veterinary science skillathon is a competitive event designed to test the knowledge and skills that a 4-H member can gain through his or her involvement in a Veterinary Science project. There are several components to the contest. The written exam is to test the participant s subject matter knowledge. The identification exam will include veterinary instruments, breeds, parasites, and internal organs. Finally, the communication portion of the contest helps to develop research and public speaking skills. Wildlife Challenge May 13, 2017 Description/Objective: Wildlife species include mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and more. All wildlife depends on native plants to complete their habitat requirements. In today s natural world, most wildlife habitat requires management due to the changes occurring steadily since our country began. Developing an appreciation and understanding of our natural world at an early age increases the likelihood that wildlife habitat will continue to be managed properly to support an abundance of wildlife species throughout the country. This is the ultimate wildlife challenge.
