Beginning September 1, the Michigan 4-H Participant Age Policy reflects a younger beginning age for 4-H members. The new age for 4-H members is 8 to 19 years old, continuing to use January 1 of the program year as the date of calculation. The 4-H Cloverbud experience will remain available to youth ages 5-7. This policy change has been implemented by MSU Extension after lengthy consultation with early childhood and Michigan 4-H youth Youth ages 8 to 19 as of January 1 of the program year are eligible to be Michigan 4-H members. development staff, as well as careful consideration of research regarding youth and competition. Furthermore, it moves Michigan 4-H into alignment with counterparts across the country, including National 4-H. As always, age appropriateness and safety remain a top consideration for 4-H programming areas and Michigan 4-H continues to support minimum age limits for certain learning environments that may not be appropriate for children 8 years of age. Additionally, individual county 4-H programs with MSU Extension also retain their right to determine the beginning age for 4-H involvement within that county. Furthermore, Michigan 4-H partners such as fairs and exhibitions may choose to implement age limits for certain projects where they feel 8-year-old participation (or older age groups) may not be safe or appropriate (for example, market beef projects). Alternatively, fairs and exhibitions may offer activities that are not consistent with 4-H Cloverbud policies, such as competition for youth below age 8. These are not considered a Michigan 4-H Youth Development activity and participation is the decision of the young person and his or her family. All Michigan 4-H Foundation members (those who have donated $25 or more in the past year) are invited to attend and vote at the Michigan 4-H Foundation Annual Membership Meeting. This meeting will be held on Friday, Oct. 5, at 2:30 p.m. at the MSU Kellogg Center in East Lansing. Agenda items include trustee elections, audited financial statement report, 2018 president s report and recognition of major donors to Michigan 4-H within the past year. Michigan 4-H donors are encouraged to attend. Admission to the annual membership meeting is complimentary. Register by Sept. 20 at michigan-4-h-foundationannual-membershipmeeting/. For more information on the 4-H Participant Age Policy, visit michigan_4_h_participant_age_policy1. For questions regarding the Cloverbud age, visit msue.anr.msu.edu/resources/michigan_4_h_cloverbud_frequently_asked_questions.
6 STATEWIDE NEWS AREA Tractor Supply 4-H Paper Clover campaign kicks off Oct. 3 6 Again this fall, local Tractor Supply Co. (TSC) stores are continuing their long-standing partnership with 4-H for the 2018 Fall Paper Clover Campaign supporting county, state and national 4-H programming. From Oct. 3 14, 2018, TSC customers can participate in the 2018 Fall Paper Clover campaign by purchasing paper clovers for $1 or more at checkout. This bi-annual event takes place at TSC s 1,600 stores across the nation including the 86 stores in Michigan. Of the funds raised, 70 percent returns to the community in which it was raised to support county 4-H programs. Of the remaining funds, 10 percent supports state 4-H volunteer and teen leadership training workshops, 5 percent supports other state 4-H programs, and the remaining 15 percent goes to the Michigan 4-H Foundation and National 4-H Council for underwriting the cost of the program. This past spring, the TSC Paper Clover fundraiser generated nearly $55,000 for Michigan 4-H. Help more youth in your community experience 4-H by purchasing a $1 clover at your neighborhood Tractor Supply store this October. National 4-H Week to be celebrated Oct For the 76th consecutive year, millions of youth, parents, volunteers and alumni across the country will celebrate National 4-H Week from October This year's theme, Inspire Kids to Do, is a campaign that will give kids more opportunities to do, empowering them with the skills they need to succeed in life and career. During the 2018 National 4-H Week, Michigan 4-H is encouraging 4-H youth, volunteers, staff and supporters to get out and inspire youth to be True Leaders through hands-on doing. From empowering them to pursue their passions to learning new skills, this October is a perfect time to make a difference for the next generation. Across the country, the goal of the 2018 National 4-H Week is to reach one million doers. You can help accomplish this by sharing how 4-H has inspired you or your kids to do on social media channels and with individuals in your community. Though every day during National 4-H Week is a great time to show your pride, Tuesday, Oct. 9, is the official 4-H Spirit Day where it is encouraged to wear 4-H apparel to show your 4-H pride. 4-H Youth in Action Award applications due Oct. 22 Sharing your 4-H story could earn you a $5,000 scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C. for National 4-H Council s Legacy Awards, where you ll have the chance to tell your story while meeting 4-H celebrities and other notable alums. The 4-H Youth in Action Award program recognizes four 4-H true leaders from across the nation in core pillar areas of agriculture, civic engagement, healthy living and STEM.
