Bob McNary 4-H Youth Development Specialist Jasper County University of Missouri Extension Courthouse Basement Carthage, MO fax: Inside this issue: Jasper County news 2 Regional news 4 State and National news 5 Grants & scholarships 9 Project resources 9 Calendar of events 9 Topics of interest can now be found on our website at missouri.edu/jasper/topicsof interest.aspx Flyer included in this newsletter: Christmas at Dixie Stampede Dear 4-H Families, The other evening I had the privilege, along with some 4-H members and parents from Jasper County, to hear Dr. Marshall Stewart, Vice Chancellor for Extension and Engagement (The Director of Missouri Extension) talk to us about Extension in Missouri. He pointed out that for every dollar that Missouri spends on Extension the residents of Missouri receive $11.25 back, a wonderful return on investment. 4-H is one of the major components of the University of Missouri s Extension program. 4-H is the largest youth development program in the United States. More than 6.5 million young people, ages 5 19 and 540,000 youth and adult volunteers participate. In Missouri, 4-H Youth Development programs reach one out of every nine young Missourians. 4-H is in practically every community across the state. Lots of things make 4-H successful. One of the major ones are the 4-H volunteer, if you are a volunteer, you are probably the most important ingredient. For that reason, Missouri 4-H is focusing new and enhanced resources on volunteer support and training. To find out what is new and improved check out the volunteer section on the Missouri 4-H webpage: Missouri 4-H is a leader in positive youth development. Our mission is 4-H Creating environments where young people are valued, contributing members of their community We do this through planned learning experiences around four essential elements. 4-H provides youth with: 1. supervised independence 2. a sense of belonging with a positive group 3. a spirit of generosity toward others 4. a wide variety of opportunities to master life challenges With the coming of a new school year, new opportunities, new challenges and often new responsibilities come. As the summer activities are winding down and before the school year gets underway, take some time to plan your school year activities. While the thrill and excitement of participating in the fairs and other summer activities is still fresh in your mind, take some time to think about your 4-H projects for this next year. It will soon be time to sign up, and decisions made in haste can sometimes be poor decisions. Think about what you liked (or maybe disliked) about your projects this year and choose new projects with these ideas in mind. If you took friends with you to the fairs that are not yet in 4-H, invite them to join. Many people who are unfamiliar with the 4-H program first learn about what we do when they attend our fair. You can all be ambassadors for 4-H by simply sharing with others what you have learned and the experiences you have enjoyed. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with so many of you this summer and thank all of you for the great summer we had. Together, with dedicated faculty, outstanding volunteers and spirited 4-H ers we can and will create environments where young people are valued, contributing members of their communities. Have a great August! Jasper County 4-H is a United Way agency

State and National News State 4-H Public Speaking Contest September 30 Registration deadline August 31. Register at 4HOnline. Complete rules for the 2017 contest are located at at -speaking/main. Please note : REPEAT COMPETITORS: For intermediates and seniors, first place finishers from a previous State 4-H Public Speaking Contest may not compete in that same category a second time, until they advance to the next age division. For example, a 1 st place winner in Intermediate Division Humorous Interpretation cannot compete in Humorous Interpretation again until they are old enough to compete in the Senior Division. Until that time, they will have to compete in another category. This restriction does not apply to juniors. Challenges we ve had in recent years: INTERPRETATION CONTENT: Youth are often drawn to explore extreme scenarios in their developmental journeys, and humanity s most brutal moments can seem very enticing as they seek material for a dramatic interpretation. However, with an audience that includes many very small children (who don t yet have a context for this information), depictions of things like beatings, rapes, torture, child deaths and genocide are not appropriate for the State 4-H Public Speaking Contest. Please help your competitors understand this now, so that there are no painful misunderstandings at the state contest after they ve gone through your county contest and spent several months rehearsing their dramatic speech. Put simply, the content of their interpretation for this contest must be appropriate for the entire family. CARING ADULTS: Our number one challenge with this contest is securing judges. Please consider volunteering to judge at this contest, and please help in recruiting other judges as well. 8 August 2017 page 8 Quality ( Q ) Tip Series: Q-Tip #16 Quality Structure Missouri 4-H is interested in making the best better in our youth, our leaders and our programs. An ongoing program improvement process called Quality Matters in 4-H is underway in Missouri. The Quality or Q-Tip series includes short, research-based tips to help youth and adult leaders be more intentional about planning 4-H club meetings and other events where members feel safe, supported and engaged in fun, interactive activities. In Q-Tip #15 we learned about freedom, structure, and limits through an activity. Today we will ensure we have a quality structure established for positive youth involvement. You have a quality structure in place if... Activities are paced for young people. Activities are not too long to lose interest, and not too short to prevent engagement. Choices, choices, choices. Young people get to choose what and how they experience information. Beginning, middle, end- There is a clear beginning, middle and end to program and activities. Participants expect the rituals that are built into these times. Beginnings might include structured opening activities, large group games, check in about day, homework help, ice breaker. Middles are typically the content and activities that support the goals. Ends are reflection activities, productions or presentations, closings. Youth have time in large groups, small groups and as individuals. The overall daily program and each activity in intentional about mixing it up. Youth have opportunities to plan and set goals. Young people help plan for the larger overall program, as well as during the activities they participate in daily. Copy and distribute the Planning and Reflection Techniques beginning on page 12 for ways to integrate youth planning into routine. Youth have opportunities for multiple ways to explore. Programs don t get trapped in one delivery medium. There are opportunities for visual art activities, sports and recreation, outdoor adventure, academic assistance, music and drama, mental exploration, citizenship and service, cooking, construction and science or nature Staff intentionally plan. Staff are thoughtful about building each of the above elements into both the overall program and the individual daily activities or offerings. YPQA Related Indicator: Staff Support Youth with Encouragement During activities, staff are almost always actively involved with youth (e.g. they provide directions, answer questions, work as partners or team members, check in with individual or small groups). Staff support at least some contributions or accomplishments of young people by acknowledging what they ve said or done with specific, nonevaluative language (e.g. Yes, the cleanup project you suggested is a way to give back to the community ). Staff make frequent use of open-ended questions (e.g. staff ask open-ended questions throughout the activity and questions are related to the context). Opportunities Outside 4-H 2017 AKSARBEN Stock Show Online Entry The 2017 AKSARBEN entry process will be an online entry process.
