1 MAY - JUNE Happy May Day! Summer is will be here before we know it! Growing up summer was my favorite time of year, because it meant lots of showing! The calendar is filling up fast with jackpots, workshops, camps, Showcase Showdown, shooting sports and fair! If you haven't hear of Showcase Showdown, or haven't been yet, be sure to check out the information on the contests available. We also have information on all of the workshops that are available. Showcase Showdown is a great learning opportunity, a place to make new friends from around the state, and offers many different competitions. If you are interested in going, or would like more information about Showcase Showdown I d love to chat with you. CLUB VISITS Council Members will be trying to start the new year off right with club visits. During these visits council members will come do a survey and visit with your club as to what the council does. 3 Leaders: As things are getting busy with programming please make sure all of your 4-H Members are enrolled. We still have a large group of members that are inactive and many who are not active due to the fact that their enrollment fees not being paid. If anyone of our members needs assistance in paying their enrollment fees please remind them that there are scholarship funds available through the 4-H Council. Leaders please do not forget to enroll for the year at Please remember that every 5 years you are required to be rescreened and do some additional training. Every year leaders must complete the MVR (Motor vehicle check) If you need assistance completing the enrollment process and the required screenings please contact Tycee at or Rachel at Leaders will you be doing project specific meetings? 4 SHOOTING SPORTS Archery County Outdoor Shoot: BIG HORN BASIN June 14-16th, 2018 Theme this year is: 4-H CAMP Around The World In 80 Hours 4-H Camp is held at the H <>W Camp which is located 18 miles up the Grass Creek Road outside of Meeteetse. Campers are required to stay in hard-sided campers or the cabins at the camp. Reserve your spot in a cabin ASAP There is a bath house with running water for showers and a large lodge for indoor activities and meals. Many activities are being planned. Each member is responsible for finding their own ride to camp. Many families carpool. Registration fees for camp are $75.00 and due to your local Extension Office by June 1st. Registration forms available in your local office or at June 2nd in Cody at the outdoor range. Please call Tony Siebert for shooting times County Shoot for all other disciplines: June 8-9th in Cody at the Cody Shooting Complex. Please call Starla Craig at for shooting times. 5 JUDGING PRACTICES All judging practices will start the week of May 7th. Livestock and Produce Judging will be on Tuesdays and Horse Judging will be on Thursdays. 6 YOUTH QUALITY ASSURANCE YQA is for any member showing any 4-H market animal. This REQUIREMENT ensures that you are raising a quality market animal to sell. LAST YQA CLASS: May 15th Level 1-6:00pm Level 2-7:00pm At the fairgrounds in the Bicentennial Hall. If you are still lacking Level 3 please contact Tycee as soon as possible to make arrangements at or tmohler2@uwyo.edu Youth Quality Assurance (YQA) teaches youth how to give the best care for their livestock in order to produce a high quality product for consumers. This is learned through understanding the importance proper nutrition, housing, identification, handling, carcass quality, health care, withdrawal times, and recordkeeping. All youth planning to sell a market project must complete YQA each year. This is NOT a Junior Livestock Sale Committee requirement. Below is a list of dates for all nutrition and YQA classes that will be offered this year. If members have gone through Pork check Off (PQA) or have completed the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) or have another quality assurance certification, that will meet your requirements. Members may also opt to take the course online at yqca.org. There is a $12.00 fee to take this course. If you would prefer to test out of YQA, an age and species appropriate test may be taken at either extension office. Youth must score an 80% or higher, and can retake the test (on a different day) as many times as they would like. Members scoring 100% (on the senior level test) will no longer need to complete YQA in future years. Junior and intermediates scoring 100% will not need to complete YQA again until they reach a new age level. Here is a study guide for the tests! study-guide. MARCH/APRIL 2018 Park 4-H Newsletter 6

Topic will be Entomology and all 4-H members are welcome to attend. Cloverbuds is a fun, educational program for children ages 5-7 by Jan. 1 of the current 4-H year. Wyoming 4-H Dog Camp and Judge s Training June 9 10 Riverton Dog project members, check out this educational opportunity! There will be an educational clinic on Saturday and a Fun Match on Sunday with Swap Meet too! Youth that want to learn more on showing and get some experience can come and learn and then compete while others can learn how to judge a 4-H dog show and get some live experience at the Fun Match. If you know anyone that might be interested, sign up at the following link and you can check out more details. Registration is due May 18. Cloverbuds lets young children learn about their world in a positive environment. Children work together to explore topics from arts/ crafts and bicycling to making healthy food choices. Showcase Showdown offers an opportunity for youth to explore various industries through contests and workshops offered at a state level. The event takes place at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming. Youth can participate in 4-H contests, workshops, tours and activities over the course of three days. here are also two award ceremonies that recognize 4-H youth for their efforts. Below you will find information about each contest. Livestock Skill-a-Thon The objective of this contest is to educate youth in science, engineering and technology while exploring their relation to livestock and the livestock industry. This contest gives participants the opportunity to bring their knowledge from judging, showing and demonstrations into one activity. This contest has various classes that participants will utilize skills in breeds and parts identification as well as quality assurance, feed identification, and a group processing activity. Produce Judging Through the produce judging contest, participants are given the opportunity to identify various types of produce through an identification line as well as evaluate eight classes and answer questions/ reasons that correlate to the different classes. Youth can participate in this contest as an individual or as a team. Cake Decorating In this contest, youth will decorate a cake (provided) using buttercream frosting (provided) and other materials (not provided). There is a predetermined schedule for this contest and youth will have up to one hour to complete their creation based on the theme announced at the start of the contest. Participation can be done as an individual or as a team of up to three people. Robotics The Wyoming 4-H Robot Contest robotics contest is modeled after the National Robotics Challenge which began as the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Robotic Technology and Engineering Challenge in The contests used have been modified to fit the needs and capabilities of Wyoming 4 -H project members and the contest is open to any 4-H member currently enrolled in the Robotics project. Based upon entries, a schedule will be created and ed out to all participants providing addresses during registration and to the county 4-H educators. 9 Horse Judging During this contest, youth will have the opportunity to evaluate two to five halter classes and two to four performance classes. They will also answer questions and or reasons (depending on age division). Hippology This contest will provide an opportunity for youth to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of equine science and management. This contest is only available for teams of two to four contestants. In this contest, participants will have an evaluation phase, stations, a team problem, and an exam. Presentations (Prepared and Impromptu) During both of these contests, youth will have the opportunity to develop their verbal communication skills through presentations. In prepared, youth have 3-10 minutes to present as juniors, 5-10 minutes as intermediates, and 7-15 minutes as seniors. Props are also allowed in the prepared contest. Youth competitors in the impromptu contest will choose three topics from a hat and pick one topic to present to the judges. They will have 5 minutes to prepare their presentation before entering the judging room. No props may be used in this contest. Dog Skill-a-Thon During the Dog Skill a Thon, youth will have the opportunity to test their skills when it comes to all things canine. The contest will consist of four parts. Those components are; jeopardy, breed identification, parts identification and a hands on skill a thon. This contest is scored as a team as well as individually. Table Setting While this contest is only available to individual competitors, youth will have the opportunity to apply real world skills in the food service industry. Contestants will have 15 minutes to complete a planned setting then will be judged through interviews. Food Cook-Off The food cook off provides a hands-on competition that incorporates many areas of the Foods & Nutrition Project. It also helps youth to learn the techniques of logical and accurate decision making as well as teach them to recognize the reasons for their decisions. In this contest, participants must compete as a team of 2-5 members and use the required amount of ingredients for their age division to make one dish. They have one hour to complete the contest and all materials must be provided by the team. MARCH/APRIL 2018 Park 4-H Newsletter 9

10 STILL TO COME! PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP The photography workshop will be rescheduled for sometime in June. Please be on the look out in the Monday Message or Social Media. All those signed up for the previous one we will notify you of date and time. Those who have already paid will be credited those fees to participate. DOG WORKSHOP Dog members be on the lookout for a dog workshop on July 18th. This will cover showmanship and possible agility and rally. LIVESTOCK WORKSHOP Livestock members be watching for a livestock workshop around the time of the Summer Sizzler on June 9th. Clinician will be covering nutrition, grooming and showmanship. FAIR NEWS New Opportunities for Fair 2018! Check out the fair book the middle of May for more details or call the fair office at Rate of Gain Contest Anyone interested in the rate of gain contest may participate as long as your animal is entered in the species market class. Park County Bred and Fed Contest Any calf, swine, meat goat or lamb bred & fed in Park County is eligible! When purchasing your projects for this year s fair, consider keeping it local. Calves Guaranteed cash and prizes of $500 Lambs Guaranteed cash and prizes of $250 Meat Goat Guaranteed cash and prizes of $250 Swine Guaranteed cash and prizes of $250 **Fair entry date is July 5th. This gives all 4-H Members and equal opportunity to win an award for their hard work on their portfolio.
