2 THE NANANGO AGRICULTURAL, PASTORAL AND MINING SOCIETY INC The Management Committee of the Nanango Agricultural, Pastoral & Mining Society Inc would like to take this opportunity to welcome our Members, Patrons, Community and all members of the public to our 108th Annual Show to be held on Saturday 8th April We are looking forward to bringing you an entertainment filled day catering for all ages. Our Show Society is very excited to announce that there will be NO PAVILION ENTRY FEES THIS YEAR, thanks to the generous sponsorship of IGA Nanango. Whilst we strive to maintain our Agricultural Heritage, we continually work to ensure the event is relevant for today s show goers. As well as our traditional features, including Woodchop, Rodeo, Livestock Events, Pavilion Displays, Fireworks, Trade Displays, Junior Judges Competitions, Live Music and Entertainment, Food Stalls, Bar & Barbeque, Miss Showgirl & Rural Ambassador etc, some of our other attractions for 2017 are Stilt Walkers, Wrestling, Luke s Snake Kingdom, Michael Sekullich s Rings of Fire Horse Spectacular, Noah s Racing Pigs, Harness Racing, Hot Shoeing & Farriering and so much more. As usual, without the dedication and commitment from our Volunteers, Members and Sponsors, the Show would not be the success that it is. 6 Nanango Miss Showgirl 2016 Hanna Perrett Nanango Rural Ambassador 2016 Justin Matthews THE 2017 NANANGO MISS SHOWGIRL The Nanango Show Society is looking for girls between the ages of 18 years 28 years who have never been married or had a child, to take part in their MISS SHOW GIRL QUEST. Entrants MUST have been a resident of Queensland for at least three months prior to the competition. The 2017 Nanango Miss Showgirl, will be announced at the Les Fogg Pavilion at the Show Grounds on Saturday Evening 25th March The Showgirl will receive a cash prize of $500 and then will be required to take part in the South Burnet Sub-Chamber Miss Showgirl Quest to be judged at date to be advised. The Winner of that contest will go to Brisbane to compete in the QUEENSLAND CHAMBERS MISS SHOWGIRL COMPETITION, with lots of prizes to be won. Locally we also hold a Miss Teen for girls aged and a Miss Junior for those aged QUEENSLAND CHAMBER OF AGRICULTURAL SOCIETIES INC To Raise the Profile of Queensland Shows RURAL AMBASSADOR AWARD Nanango Show Society invites applications from entrants who must be: Born or Naturalised Australians permanently resident in the Nanango Shire Area Aged between years as at 1 st May 2017 Actively involved or demonstrate a readiness to become actively involved in our Show and be knowledgeable about current rural issues pertaining to our local area, Queensland and Australia and have a strong affiliation towards agriculture. Be available to compete in the Sub Chamber judging to be held 10th June 2017 in Wondai. The Award is open to both male and female and married or single entrants. Full Conditions of Entry and entry form may be obtained from the Show Secretary at or by nanangoshowsociety@bigpond.com The Winner will then represent Nanango at the South Burnett Sub-Chamber Rural Ambassador Award judging. The winner of which will then represent the South Burnett in The Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies State Final held at the Brisbane Exhibition in August. 7 RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. The Rules and Regulations comprised in the model uniform schedule compiled by the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies except where such may be modified or added to by special rules and regulations, shall be the conditions of competition, and all exhibitors and competitors shall make their entries or enter into the competition on this condition. 2. Entries will not be received from any person disqualified by the QLD Chamber of Agricultural Societies during the period of such disqualification. Should any entry be accidentally accepted, it shall, when discovered, be deemed void, and the entry fee forfeited. 3. No special entry form is required by competitors. 4. Livestock exhibits must be bona fide property of the Exhibitor for one month prior to the Show. 5. Exhibitors, if requested by the Society, shall prove the correctness of their entries by statutory declaration. 6. Exhibits entered in the wrong Class by an Exhibitor may be transferred to the proper Class by the Steward and the Judge notified. 7. Exhibitors, unless otherwise provided for, may show as many exhibits as they desire in each Class but separate entries must be paid for. 8. Responsibility of Pedigrees or other particulars required by the schedule rests solely with the Exhibitors. Incorrect particulars, or omission of particulars required, may render the competitor liable to forfeiture of prize money, and to disqualification for such period as the committee may deem fitting. 9. Entries in the livestock section will be taken as guaranteed that exhibits are free from disease. In case of infectious disease being spread through the violation of this regulation, the Exhibitor shall be responsible. Should there be any reason to suspect that an exhibit is either dangerous or diseased; the Society reserves the right to refuse admittance or to remove the exhibits from the grounds at the expense of the Exhibitor. 10. The Society may receive for exhibition only, not for competition, any exhibits not specified in the schedule, provided there is sufficient space. The Society reserves the right to refuse any entry without giving reasons for doing so. 11. It shall be the responsibility of the Stewards to explain fully to the Judges the conditions of each class. 12. The Stewards shall attend on Judges and afford any information required, but shall not do so or say anything to influence their decision. They shall not reveal the name of the exhibitor or repeat the remarks of the Judge. 13. The Judges may recommend extra prizes for exhibits not specially provided for in the section, but the recommendations are subject to the approval by the committee. 14. Judges have the power to disqualify any exhibit, which in their opinion does not comply with the regulation and shall inform the Stewards of the reason which shall be recorded in the award book. 15. Judges have the power to withhold any prize if they consider the exhibit of insufficient merit. 16. Judges may inform the Stewards of any remarks or notes they desire to have recorded in the award book. 17. Stewards shall have the power to remove exhibitors or other persons from the vicinity of the judge while judging. 18. All persons shall be subject to the regulations of the Stewards, and any person or persons causing a nuisance will be expelled from the grounds, and in the case of Exhibitors, may be disqualified. 19. Protests must be lodged at the Secretary s Office, in writing, with a fee of $20, not later than one (1) hour after the judging of the event, in which the protest is to be made. If the committee considers the protest frivolous, the deposit shall become forfeited to the Secretary. 20. Disputes, objections, & protests shall be decided by the committee, whose decision will be final & binding on all parties. 21. All exhibits must be delivered to and from the grounds at the risk of the Exhibitor. 22. The Society will not under any circumstances hold itself liable for any accident on the grounds or premises. 23. The Society will not, under any circumstances, hold itself liable for any accident, damage or non delivery of livestock or other exhibits at the Society s Show, and it shall be a condition of entry that each Exhibitor shall hold the Society blameless and indemnify it against any legal proceedings arising through any accident, loss, non delivery or damage whatsoever. 24. Where animals are being led, worked and displayed, it is the responsibility of the owner/handler at the time, to ensure the animal does not become a public safety liability. 25. Dogs, other than those owned by members of the Canine Control Council, must be kept in a float or vehicle, or else on a short leash, and must be suitably muzzled as to prevent it being able to injure or bite any person or other animal. 26. A GENERAL PARADE OF PRIZE-WINNING STOCK WILL BE HELD ON THE MAIN DAY OF THE SHOW. ANY LIVESTOCK EXHIBITS NOT TAKING PART, FORFEIT THE PRIZE OR MONEY WON, AND THE OWNER MAY BE SUBJECT TO A FINE. 27. Auctioneers shall pay to the Society a commission of not less than 2.5% on livestock sales effected on the grounds, whether by auction or private contract. 28. All prize money is to be collected on the day of the Show, unless prior arrangements are made with the Secretary. Prize money not collected within 28days of Show date will be forfeited. ACCOMMODATION For the duration of the show, camping facilities with toilets and hot showers are available, at no charge to Exhibitors. However, power outlets are limited, so please do not overload them. EXHIBITORS MUST PAY GATE ENTRANCE FEE Section 1 LIVESTOCK SECTION HORSES CHIEF STEWARD: Ms. Lyn McNamara phone STEWARD: Mrs. Iris Kleinhanss phone NOMINATIONS CLOSE: 11AM On Grounds 8th April 2017 It is a requirement that a HORSE HEALTH DECLARATION FORM and COMPETITIOR INDEMNITY FORM are completed and handed in when entering. These forms are available on request or are enclosed in the horse schedule. Refusing, or failing, to complete an Indemnity and Health Declaration forms for all horses and exhibitors, will result in exclusion from the grounds. CONDITIONS: 1. The age of all horses to be calculated as at the 1st August. Every horse foaled before 1st August in any year shall be deemed to be one (1) year old on that date. 2. The Judges are requested to satisfy themselves as far as possible, regarding the soundness of horses, before awarding ribbons and sashes, and to avoid making awards to animals showing symptoms of hereditary unsoundness. No protest on veterinary grounds will be received. 3. All Stallions over the age of two years must be led on bars or yearling bits, or stallion halter and chain. Handlers/Riders of Stallions to be over 14 yrs of age. 4. District Events are confined to the South Burnett Regional Shire of Nanango, Blackbutt, Kingaroy, Wondai, Murgon, Proston and Yarraman. District horses to be ridden by district rider. A District rider is one who has himself/herself, and horse, has resided in the area for at least three (3) months prior to the Show. 5. Local Events are confined to Post Code Judges and Stewards at all times, reserve the right to reject any nomination they so desire, and to withhold any awards if they consider necessary. 7. Hacks, Galloways and Ponies will not be measured unless a dispute arises and then the official measurer s word is final. 8. All Horses competing in Breed Classes must be registered or recorded with respective breed society/association, and registration papers must be produced upon request. Owners and/or competitors must be current financial members of the Association/Breed as required. Current membership proof may be requested. 9. A Maiden is classified as a horse never having won a first prize in any similar event at any show. 7

8 10. A Novice is classified as a horse not having won a Champion Ribbon at an Agricultural Show, or a First at a Royal Show, in a hack/hunter class. 11. A Show Hunter is classified as a heavier horse with more substance than a modern fine hack. No coloured brow brands or multi coloured ribbons on rider. 12. A horse that competes as a show hack cannot compete as a show hunter hack except where stated. YOU MUST CHOOSE TO COMPETE YOUR HORSE AS A SHOW HACK OR A SHOW HUNTER HACK. 13. Trophy where indicated replaces 1st prize. 14. Evidence of age of Junior Riders must be produced if requested. 15. Classes to follow the order laid down in the programme. 16. The Chief Steward has the discretionary powers to see that events on the program are not held up while competitors compete in more than one ring. 17. A Judges decision representing his/her individual preference is not protestable unless it is alleged to be in violation of the rules. Any protest must be made in writing and accompanied by a $20 fee and must be lodged within one hour of completion of event. 18. A Judge or official may at any time exclude any horse or rider or handler from the contest or from the remainder of the show, for cruelty or abuse, of a horse, or for being guilty of unsportsmanlike or aggressive behaviour towards a judge, official or another competitor. 19. No floats, trucks or cars to be parked in the area between the ring and Pony Club area. 20. Competitors-electric fences are not allowed on the grounds on Show days for safety reasons. 21. Suitable foot wear must be worn by competitors when competing in led or ridden classes - e.g. joggers, thongs are not allowed. 22. Where animals are being led, worked and displayed it is the responsibility of the owner/handler to ensure the animal does not become a public liability. 23. Harness Racing will be incorporated into our show. DOGS Dogs other than exhibited in the Championship Dog Show, must be kept in a closed float or vehicle, or on a short leash, and must be suitably muzzled as to prevent it from being able to injure or bite any person or other animal. Cattle must not be introduced unless they are from a property or herding which Johne's Disease has been known, or suspected to exist, during the five year period prior to the Show. 5. Any Exhibitors/Competitors intending to bring electrical equipment to the Show grounds will be required to ensure that such equipment is fitted with residual current protection and that all electrical leads, tools and appliances have been inspected by a licensed electrical contractor and currently tagged. The Exhibitors/Competitors are required to ensure that they, and all persons under their Direction or control, comply with all requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995, and the Society holds each Exhibitor responsible to discharge its obligations to provide and maintain a safe place and system of work, during occupation by the Exhibitor/Competitor of any area of the Showgrounds. 11. Stewards have the right to remove any animal from the Judging Ring if that animal is a danger to the safety of the public. 12. All cattle must be accompanied by a DPI Travel Permit, endorsed with treatments performed (if necessary), and an owner Waybill. 13. It is the responsibility of the Owner or person-in-charge of the stock to ensure that the cattle tick requirements (where necessary) have been fulfilled in regard to the entry treatments. Persons not fulfilling the requirements will be refused entry to the Showgrounds. 14. It is the responsibility of the Owner or person-in-charge of the stock to contact their nearest Department of Primary Industries Stock Inspector and arrange for treatment (where necessary) of their stock according to the statutory requirements. 15. It is forbidden to administer any prohibited drug or cause one to be administered in any way whatsoever. 16. A prohibited drug means any substance originating externally to the animal (whether or not endogenous to the animal) capable of affecting the performance or behaviour of an animal by its action upon central or peripheral nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the alimentary system, the musclo-skeletal system or the uro-genital system and shall include analgesics, anti-histamines, antiinflammatory agents, blood coagulants, diuretics, hormones and their synthetic counterparts, cortico-steroids, anabolic steroids, local anaesthetics, muscle relaxants and tranquillizers and vitamins. 17. Any exhibit which has been brought to the Showgrounds and is found to have had administered to it any prohibited drug as defined above, may, without prejudice to any other action which may be taken in respect of the matter, be debarred by the Show Stewards from competing in any event for which it may have been entered. 18. No drug, hormone or tranquillizer shall be administered to any animal exhibit except under the direction of the Society's Veterinary Surgeon who will advise the Stewards if in his opinion such drug, hormone or tranquillizer, or is likely to have any effect upon the animal which would be material to its chances of being awarded a prize and in such case the Stewards may debar the animal from competing. A Show Steward may at any time direct the Society's Veterinary Surgeon to take a sample of blood, saliva or urine from an exhibit for testing.

HINTS Always read the Schedule carefully. Show cooking is a lot of fun if you don t win a prize, study the winning entries to see where you went wrong, also talk to the Chief Steward. Best of LUCK! Chocolate Fudge Don t overheat as it grains too much and loses its bright colour. Coconut Ice 26 Another sweet you must not overcook as it becomes hard to cut. Most schedules say boiled, NOT made with copha. Don t colour the pink too brightly. One drop of rose pink gives a good colour. French Jellies Firm, and a good colour. Try to put two colours together as this is much more appealing. Marshmallows Should break when twisted twice and be firm to touch. Russian Caramels This depends on the Judge. Some like it like toffee, I like it grained like fudge. Make all sweets uniform in size. In a collection always name all varieties. Make sweets approximately three or four centimeters in size. Chutney Good colour, fruity flavour, mellow taste. Jams Good colour and flavour, thick enough that when dropped from spoon will stay dropped. Should have a nice pearly shine, cook jam slowly before adding sugar and boil briskly after sugar has been added. Add lemon juice at start of cooking jam as it brings out the pectin in fruit. Jellies Good colour when held up to the light, free from any clouding. Best way to prevent this is to hang fruit overnight, do not squeeze bag. Make sure that bottle is full enough so that when lid is placed on bottle there is no gap between the jelly and the lid. Also, only stir jelly until sugar dissolves. Marmalade Always cut skins finely (without fruit); don t put through a blender. Some recipes give this method, but still not accepted for show work as it makes the jam cloudy. If jam is too hot when bottled, fruit will rise from the bottom losing points. When putting jams in a show, unless schedule states Jams and Marmalades, never use a citrus fruit, as they are classed as marmalade. Cook rind till tender before adding sugar. Jams lose colour with age. Bottling Jams is the same as for the Jellies. Relish Should be boiled to thicken, cornflour or Plain Flour should not be required. Good colour. Bottles should be uniform size, approx. 500gm. Use bottles with straight sides, neatly labeled and polished free of drips and finger marks. Always pack bottles of Jelly or other bottle work so they will not lean sideways during transport. Always line the inside of lids with white cardboard or heavy paper. Most judges prefer no hats. Biscuits Bake in a low-sided tray. High-sided trays block out heat causing the bottom of the biscuits to brown before the top. If the mixture is too soft, refrigerate rather than adding flour, which can spoil the texture. When schedule states plain biscuits, they should be rolled and put through a pusher. Biscuits dropped and pressed with a fork are classed as cookies. Texture of biscuits should be fine and crisp. Flavour plays a big part in judging - the flavour should denote what type of biscuit it is. In a collection, name each variety and ensure uniformity. Boiled Fruit Cake As this is called a Poor man s cake it should have only 375gm packet of mixed fruit and a nice glossy top. A lot of competitors lose points for cleaning out the bowl too much. This part of the mixture has less fruit and this will show, spoiling the appearance of the cake. Fruit Cake Flavour should be very pleasing, with fruit distributed evenly when cut. Fruit should have a glossy look. If overcooked, fruit will start to burst. The top should be nice and smooth. This can be achieved by wetting your hand and patting the top of the cake before cooking. Scones A light and fine texture. This comes about by kneading well. Size should be about 5 centimeters. For show work, scones should never touch whilst cooking. For pumpkin scones, always strain the pumpkin so that no pieces of pumpkin show in scones when opened. Before bringing scones to a show, rub off any visible flour with a soft cloth. Scones should be evenly cooked and nicely browned top and bottom. Scones should be broken in

27 half, not cut. Texture scones should flake when thumb is rolled across lightly. Shortbread To be a delicate straw colour. When tasted, should leave a rich butter taste in your mouth. Slice Should be cut into 5cm squares. Six pieces to a tray unless otherwise stated. Base firmly cooked according to the recipe, nice even colour. Firm icing, not wet, no drips over edges. For show work, trim edges to get a nice straight edge before cutting into 5cm squares. Sponges A good sponge is light and moist, but not soggy. Delicately and evenly browned with no overhanging or sugar spots. With a sponge roll, take care not to overcook as they will crack when rolled. Always use warm jam in a sandwich sponge or roll. Sultana Cake Beat well to avoid sugar spots, but don t over beat. For show work, only use 360gram sultanas to a 250gram mixture (check schedule). The cake should be light brown when taken out of the oven. When icing cake for show work, join sandwiches with a fine line of icing, always have only a thin layer on top, using very little butter, add a little glycerine to keep icing soft. When cooking for show, don t use a cake cooler. Turn out on a tea towel, turning often. Having cooling rack marks will mean you lose points. Always use good quality ingredients at room temperature. One tablespoon of hot water while creaming butter and sugar helps remove sugar spots. Use Fielders Cornflour for cakes and White Wings for thickening. When adding flour, don t add it all at once as some flour is drier and you may not need it all. Only add until a good consistency is achieved. A good size for Pikelets is one tablespoon. Always pour your mixture from the point of the spoon to get a good shape. Don t put dates or prunes in rich fruitcake for show work. When icing cakes or patty cakes use few decorations, and keep away from where the judge cuts through the centre of the cake. All entries are cut in half for judging and tasting unless otherwise specified.
