The weather is starting to improve, people are enjoying the outdoors more, and the flowers are beginning to blossom. Dorchester County 4-H is also blossoming this Spring! This time of year is always busy for the 4-H program. There is the annual 4-H Recognition Dinner, public speaking contests, club meetings, trips, and project work along with a myriad of other things. There are also exciting new opportunities blossoming in the next few months. Be on the lookout in this newsletter for information about a Sheep & Goat Workshop, Science Saturday program celebrating Earth Day, a Volunteer & Parent Workshop, Engineering camp, a community service opportunity, and much more. Our first face-to-face meeting was held at the 4-H Center in Timonium. I was introduced to the other members and found out I was assigned to the Public Relations Committee. I was excited because I love photography and was hoping I would be able to use my skills to promote 4-H. I attended my first State Council retreat on February at the Crowne Plaza in Annapolis. We worked together to decide on a public issue for the year that would be of interest to Marylanders. We voted for bee population/environmental impact. We will be creating awareness of the effects of the bee population on the environment and what we eat every day. Stay tuned for more information and activities related to this important issue. During the retreat we had many educational sessions on a variety of topics from communication to advocacy. We also had Sean Clougherty come in and speak to us on what should be in our social media posts and news articles. In my Public Relations Committee, we worked on planning out a basic schedule for our social media postings and newsletter content. I am in charge of the Monday Instagram posts. Other posts will be on Wednesdays and Fridays. Make sure to follow us on Look for some of the pictures I took during the retreat of our activities, 4-H member profiles, and group photos. I was so excited about taking pictures that I won the Spirit Award for the weekend which entitles me to a $25 certificate to be used at the Maryland 4-H store. We didn t work the entire weekend. We did lots of fun ice breakers and my favorite was called Shuffle Ya Bunz. We also went swimming in the indoor pool, played giant Scrabble, and had a fashion show. I met many new friends and learned about other 4-H projects that they are part of. I am honored to be Dorchester s representative for State 4-H Council and look forward to updating you on future activities and events! 2

3 Last chance to Re-enroll This is your last chance to re-enroll as a 4-H member or volunteer for 2017! Re-enrollment forms are due by April 5th. If you do not re-enroll then you will miss out on the chance to participate in 4-H opportunities including the Fair, etc. The $10 state 4-H enrollment fee is also due by April 5th. Cloverbud members and volunteers do not pay this fee. The fee is capped at $30 per family for families that have more than 3 children enrolled in 4-H. Letters will be mailed to those this affects. Contact Navonne at nowen@umd.edu if you have any questions or are unsure if you have re-enrolled. 4-H Public Speaking Contest Results The Dorchester County 4-H Public Speaking Contest took place on February 24th at Thendara 4-H Center. Congratulations to the following participants who had the chance to practice their public speaking skills: Justin Wilson, Junior Radio Spot - First place & Champion (eligible for Regional & State contests) Kaitlyn Bradley, Intermediate Prepared Speech - First place & Champion (eligible for Regional & State contests) Ali Todd, Intermediate Visual Presentation - First place & Champion (eligible for 4-H Presents! event at Maryland State Fair) Rachel Widmaier, Intermediate Demonstration - First place & Champion (eligible for 4-H Presents! event at Maryland State Fair) MD 4-H Youth Art Contest Results Congratulations to Rachel Widmaier, Trailblazers 4-H Club, for participating in the 4-H Youth Art Contest at the Horse World Expo held in Timonium in January. Rachel received three blue ribbons and had the Champion Intermediate art entry out of over 20 entries! Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Scholarship To promote the preservation, awareness, and appreciation of our environment, the Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Inc., offers scholarships to Maryland students who are pursuing careers in fish and wildlife management, environmental education and science, and related fields. Sporting Clays Tournament The 22nd Annual Maryland 4-H Foundation Sporting Clays Tournament will be held April 1st at Schraders in Henderson (Caroline County). This annual event benefits the MD 4-H Shooting Sports program. This is a 50 target shoot for youth and adults. For more information or to register, please contact Conrad Arnold at carnold@umd.edu. 4 Volunteer & Parent Workshop 4-H club leaders, volunteers, and parents are invited to a Volunteer & Parent Workshop on Wednesday, April 5th from 6-8 pm at the Thendara 4-H Center. Dinner will be provided starting at 6 pm and the event will help you DISCOVER, EXPLORE, and GROW! See attached flyer for details. Pre-registration is required by March 31st. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. You don t want to miss the fun and hands-on activities! 4-H Engineering Camp Get ready for the 2017 Maryland 4-H Engineering Camp at the Rocks 4-H Camp in Harford County from April 21st-23rd. At this camp youth ages (as of January 1, 2017) and adult volunteers will get hands on introduction to 4-H engineering projects, participate in team engineering challenges, develop teamwork skills, and form friendships with youth from across the state. Engineering projects include: Large tractor operation, lawn tractor, geospatial, welding, and marine engineering. The cost for the Maryland 4-H Engineering camp is: * $ for 4-H members if received before April 1st; $ for non 4-H members if received before April 1st * $ for all registrations received after April 1st * $ for all adult volunteers (must be UME approved volunteers) Registration packets are available online at ter.ps/4hencamp17. Visit our Facebook page at ref=bookmarks. Dorchester County 4-H is offering two FULL scholarships for members to attend and one FULL scholarship for an adult UME volunteer to attend. Science Saturday The mid-shore 4-H programs are hosting a Science Saturday program on Saturday, April 22nd. The event will be held from 9 am to 3 pm at the Caroline County 4-H Park in Denton. We will be celebrating Earth Day by discovering what makes our planet so great and how we can protect it. Youth ages 8-18 are invited and will explore earth friendly topics, use pedal power to create drinks and snacks, make take-home items and projects, enjoy a nature hike, and much more. Pre-registration on the attached flyer is required. Cost is $10 per youth by April 7th; $15 after that date. Bring a lunch and drink. Everything else will be provided. Register today as space is limited! Open to ALL (4-H membership not required) so invite your friends! 4-H Recognition Dinner - RSVP by March 8th The 4-H Recognition Dinner is Saturday, March 18th at 6 pm at the Thendara 4-H Center. All youth and volunteers who were involved in 2016 will be recognized and are encouraged to attend. All new members and families are invited too! A catered meal will be provided at no cost. The event will feature a Share Fair and Silent Auction. 4-Hers should plan to bring something for the Share Fair. Silent Auction donations are welcome and needed; please bring them on the 18th. Bring a check or cash to pay for your purchases. Oh, and we have Dorchester County 4-H t-shirts to sell too! You must RSVP to attend. 5 Animal Science Tidbits Sheep & Goat Clinic Maryland 4-H will be hosting a Sheep & Goat Clinic on April 7th & 8th at the Caroline County 4-H Park in Denton. Youth interested in learning more about sheep or goats should plan to attend. This clinic is offered at no charge and lunch/supplies are provided. See attached flyer and application for details. Registration is due March 13th. Champion Drive Show Animal Sale The Champion Drive Show Animal Sale will be held Saturday, April 1st at the QA 4-H Park in Centreville. The sale will feature purebred and crossbred hogs, market goats, and market lambs. Preview of animals is from 11-1 and the sale will begin at 1 pm. This is a local opportunity to purchase your 4-H market animals. 4-H Market & Breeding Animal Ownership Deadlines 4-Hers must own their market & breeding animals by the following deadlines: Market Hogs, Lambs, & Goats - May 1st Breeding Animals - June 1st Eastern Shore 4-H Spring Show The Eastern Shore 4-H Spring Show is scheduled for Saturday, May 13th at the QA 4-H Park in Centreville. Youth can exhibit beef, dairy, sheep, swine, goats, rabbits, cavies, and dogs. Entries are due postmarked by April 15th. Please Navonne for the show catalog Maryland Animal Health Fair & Show Requirements The 2017 Animal Health Fair & Show Requirements are now available at: AnimalHealth/Pages/default.aspx. 4-H/FFA Livestock Auction Scholarship The Caroline/Dorchester County Fair awards a scholarship each year to a Caroline or Dorchester 4-H or FFA member. The funds are from donations received through the livestock auction. Applications are due May 2nd. Contact the office for eligibility requirements and an application. Community Service Opportunity The Caroline/Dorchester County Fair Board is hosting a Bingo fundraiser on Sunday, March 26th at the Caroline County 4-H Park in Denton. Youth and adult help is needed to make the event a success! Please consider helping and earn community service hours in the process. Help is needed throughout the day from 9:30-5:30. Doors open at 12:30 and the Bingo starts at 2 pm. You can help with set-up, registration, game tables, pit beef dinner, kitchen, assisting with Bingo, clean-up, and other tasks. We need photos of 4-H members and volunteers in action meetings, trips, contests, fairs, working on projects at home, etc. The photos will be used in a special presentation at the Rec. Dinner.
