I know that sometimes it s hard to balance all the balls you have in the air and I thank you for always keeping that 4-H flag flying.

Seniors, thank you for being inspirational role models for the younger 4-H members and an exemplarily example of the 4-H spirit.

Also, as the older members will tell you, take full advantage of all the opportunities that you can through 4-H.

This means that we are headed into the last 4-H season for many graduating 4-H members. I would like to take this time to congratulate each of you on your accomplishments in 4-H and academically. I know that sometimes it s hard to balance all the balls you have in the air and I thank you for always keeping that 4-H flag flying. Your years as a 4-H member will come in handy later in life, I promise. The friends, adults, and experiences you have gained through 4-H are something you will have forever. Seniors, thank you for being inspirational role models for the younger 4-H members and an exemplarily example of the 4-H spirit. Other members, be sure and thank the seniors in your club. They have provided the leadership and inspiration that has gotten your club to where it is today. Also, as the older members will tell you, take full advantage of all the opportunities that you can through 4-H. This includes attending 4-H camp and horse camp in June, as well as 4-H Congress and the Carbon County Fair in July. Check out this newsletter for upcoming deadlines for these activities. Only project members & their parents may pick up swine tags. Please call the Ext. 4-H members must be 14 & have completed their record book the previous 4-H year to attend. 4-H Congress will be held July 8-11 this year on the MSU campus. Registration deadline is June 15.

3 Page 3 Are you interested in attending 4-H Congress in Bozeman this summer? Competitive events include Horse Skillathon, Horse & Livestock Judging, Public Speaking, Demonstration, Stir Ups (cooking), Fashion Revue, Quilting, Gavel Games (Parli Pro) & Wildlife. 4-H members must be 14 & have completed their record book the previous 4-H year to attend. 4-H Congress will be held July 8-11 this year on the MSU campus. Registration deadline is June 15. The Carbon County 4-H Council assists with registration fees. Please contact Nikki if you are interested in attending this fun youth event. 4 Page 4 *Are you taking an animal to the Carbon County Fair? Do you need Livestock Quality Assurance? QA is required every 2 years for any 4-H/FFA member exhibiting an animal at the fair. Yellowstone County has QA scheduled for May 15th & May 17th. *Fair Clean Up Days are scheduled for Saturday, July 12 and Saturday, July 19 starting at 9 am at the Carbon County Fairgrounds in Red Lodge. Attendance at one of the clean up days is required for 4-H/FFA members attending fair. Kitchen help is also needed Monday, July 21. *Montana Fair (Billings) sheep weigh & tag date is Sat., May 17 at PAYS. Quality Assurance will also be offered that day. Call Yell. Co for more info. Montana Fair dates are Aug Look online for the exhibitor handbook. *4-H Regional Citizenship Conference is June 16th in Billings. The focus of the program will be the judicial system with visit to the juvenile detention center and Justice Court. See the attached flier for registration. *Self-Determined & Independent Study project members are required to submit a project plan to the Extension Office. These were mailed out in March and April. You will not be able to exhibit your project at fair without a program plan on file. *A complete list of livestock jackpot shows and entry forms is available on the Yellowstone County Extension website: *Shooting Sports & Equestrian competitions are offered during the Big Sky State Games. Call Dog Superintendent Carla Prinkki ******************************************************************** Horse Happenings All horse project members should have received their folder with release and ID forms, level patterns, immunization requirements, assessment forms, etc. Due date for required horse forms is May 16. The Horse Trail Ride is scheduled for Saturday, June 7 at 2:00 pm at Bev Braten s arena (back road from Joliet to Fromberg). New this year will be obstacles, challenges & activities for the riders along the course. Horse Camp is June at the Red Lodge Fairgrounds. Camp applications will be available in May. Under the Beartooths Horse Show will be held Sat., June 28 in Red Lodge.

5 Page 5 Max Erickson, Tel Daniels Kenyon Hatten The ambassador team is springing into action. Early in the month, prospective ambassadors were interviewed. We are excited to announce our two new ambassadors: Danni Lynn Nardinger and Brittany Prinkki. Danni Lynn is a member of the Rock Creek Ranchers 4-H club and is involved in rodeo, sports and takes a variety of 4-H projects including equine, dog and beef. Brittany also is a member of the Rock Creek Ranchers 4-H club. She is involved in basketball, FFA, BPA and takes llama and equine projects. These two girls will be a great addition to the ambassador team. They bring may years of 4-H experience and enthusiasm. After months of planning, the District Livestock Camp was held in Billings last weekend. Tel, Kenyon, and Max worked with Yellowstone, Stillwater, and Big Horn county ambassadors to provide 4-Hers with an afternoon of learning about animals, showmanship and fitting. There were 50 participants plus parents in attendance. What a great event for our 4-Hers and for our ambassadors to showcase there knowledge of organizing, planning and leadership! Thank you to Katie Braten (poultry), Craig & Sidney Erickson (rabbit) and Danny & ShayLe Hildebrand (beef) for presenting livestock workshops. As the school year comes to an end, Tel will be graduating form Laurel High School. Congratulations Tel and thanks for all that you have done for our ambassador team. Remember, clubs, to keep raising money for the Ambassador Charity Challenge. The Wildlife Sanctuary needs your support. Is your club collecting money for the Ambassador Charity Challenge? The challenge ends June 15th. Host families are needed! MT 4-H is still in need of quite a few host families for 2014, for Japanese youth ages who are coming to Montana from July 20-August 18. If you are interested in hosting these youth, please contact Nikki as soon as possible. The kids want to experience what it is like to live with a Montana family and to participate in everyday activities that your family has planned. Also needed are families for high school students who are here for the school year and for IFYEs. IFYEs are young adults from primarily European countries who want a farm/ranch experience. The high school students are from Japan, Korea and Eurasian countries. Camps The Extension Office has a list of several agriculture-based youth camps being held this summer. The camps include MT Range Days, MT Youth Range Camp, MT Natural Resources Youth Camp, Youth Trapper Camp, Carbon County 4-H & Horse Camps and more. Congratulations to our new Carbon County 4-H Ambassadors Brittany Prinkki & Danni Lynn Nardinger of the Rock Creek Ranchers 4-H Club. They will be a great addition to our 4-H Ambassador team!

Carbon County Shooting Sports is in need of another gun safe! Due to the popularity of the program & grant money enabling the purchase of more firearms, the current safe has become crowded. Next Fair Board meeting: Mon., June 8 p.m. Fairgrounds, Red Lodge All Fair Superintendents & Organizational Leaders should plan to be in attendance. There will be a building walk-through and designation of clean-up projects. Any fair concerns will also be addressed as well as budget discussion. Call Fair Board Secretary Ann Ballard if you wish to be placed on the agenda ( ). New fair changes: 4-H/FFA members will only be allowed to sell 2 blue-ribbon items in the silent auction. Market sheep/goat weigh-in begins at 4 pm on July 23 followed by swine then beef. Please note changes to the fair show schedule (located at the front of the fair book.)
