Thank you for all the help and support that you lent for me and all the other 4- H volunteers during the 4-H fair week. EVERY- ONE was greatly appreciated! Just because the 4-H show week has ended, it doesn t mean 4-H does! Get ready for award season. Award packets are due to the office by AUGUST 23! These forms MUST be turned in by leaders of your club. If you have questions about records/awards, there is lots of information included in this newsletter! Also, the Kids Helping Kids CLOTHING DRIVE is coming up VERY soon. Read more about this event below. 2 P A G E 2 Over 750 youth have joined Illinois shooting sports in 2010! You must receive your hunter certification card... before you can buy a hunting license. 4-H Shooting Club SIGN UP! The U of I Extension 4- H Shooting Sports Program provides instruction in the safe handling of firearms and archery equipment. The program teaches selfresponsibility, decision-making, selfdiscipline, goal setting, teamwork and safety. The Shooting Sports Program is being taught as a group project. Trained certified instructors are present when any planned 4-H Shooting Sport activity is conducted. The disciplines of archery, air and.22 caliber rifle, and shotgun are included. Hunter Safety Course The University of Illinois Extension Agriculture Program and the White County Gun Club will be offering Hunter Education classes in August. The classes will be: Tuesday, Aug PM Thursday, Aug. 12, 6-8 PM Saturday, Aug. 14, 9 AM 3 PM. Participants must attend all 10 hours of instruction and pass a test to receive their Hunter Certification Card. You must have this card before you can buy a hunting license. You must be at least 9 years of age to attend. Adults are also welcome to take the White County is trying to begin a shooting club! If you are interested in becoming a member of the shooting club in White County, please call the extension office at We need to know who is interested ASAP! Please call the office by August 20! class. Adults must also take all 10 hours of instruction to receive their certification. Classes will be held at the White County Extension Office in Carmi. Southern Illinois Leadership Conference Great news! Exciting plans are shaping up for the fourth annual Southern Illinois Leadership Convention. The special leadership development event for all Illinois high school students or teens not yet 19 years of age by September 1, 2010, is set for Saturday, October 9, through Monday, October 11, 2010, at Touch of Nature Environmental Center in beautiful Southern Illinois. This year s theme is MISSION POSSIBLE: Your Mission Is Leadership! Please note the early bird registration fee is $150 this year. That deadline is September 3, and the regular fee of $175 is due September 10. Two special NEW features of the 2010 convention are: 1) ½ fee scholarships are available for teams of 2-3 teens from local school clubs 2) Eight of the ten workshops offered this year are being developed and are to be taught by teens from the 2010 planning committee Call the office if you are interested in this upcoming conference!

We would like White County 4-H to be represented at all the fall festivals White County Fair Dunking Stand This year as in the past the Carmi Lions will be donating their dunking stand at the White County fairgrounds for this year in one manner of another. Many clubs walk through the parades hosted by each community to gain awareness for White County 4-H. Please let the office know about your our county 4-H clubs to operate and make some money!!! If your club is interested, please contact the office for an available day (August 2-7) or club s interest in these events so that we do not over-book one parade over another. Award descriptions (competitive) are enclosed in this newsletter (see insert pages 7-8).Here are some important dates you need to know. August 4 State 4-H Club Award applications are due in County Office. August 16 4-H members should have their records to leaders. August 23 Leaders should turn in records at office. Members ARE NOT allowed to drop records off at county office. August 31 ALL LEADERS please be present for record grading at 5:30PM. September 7 Corn Day Candidate Interviews by Awards Committee. It is important that White County 4-H sponsors realize how much we appreciate them. A special reminder to member that showed sheep wethers at this year s livestock show, Donnie Seitz and John Martin Williams sponsored special awards for you this year! Do not forget to appreciative. 6 University of Illinois Extension Hamilton-Wayne-White Unit White County Office 1715 College Ave. Carmi, Illinois Jessica South White County 4-H Robin Pyle Secretary Dennis Epplin Interim County Director Discover Chicago This year s Discover Chicago trip will be October 9-11, Those attending this year s trip will visit the Museum of Science and Industry, dine on a medieval feast at Medieval Times, visit the John Hancock Center, Field Museum, Rainforest Café, and Shedd Aquarium. All students who will be in fifth, sixth, or seventh grade will be eligible to for this trip. Youth do not need to be in 4-H in order to attend. Cost for the trip will be $299 which includes a mission to all attractions, lodging, bus transportation, meals and insur- ance. 8 2010 WHITE COUNTY 4-H AWARDS By the Numbers Most of the award forms & instructions can be downloaded from the Extension Website at: See your club leader for more information! Project Medals 4-Hers may complete applications for PROJECT AWARD MEDALS in the following categories. There are no age requirements. 4-Hers must have taken the project THIS YEAR to qualify for the medal, but their work in all years will be taken into consideration when graded. Each medal can only be awarded once during the 4-Her s entire career. Achievement for Entire 4-H career all areas Agriculture includes project work in beef, cat, dairy, goats, horse & pony, poultry, rabbit, sheep, small pets, swine and vet science Community Involvement Global Awareness includes project work in citizenship, community service, intercultural Environment & Natural Resources includes project work in camping & outdoor living, conservation, entomology, forestry, geology, sports fishing, wildlife and natural resources Food Nutrition & Health includes project work in foods & nutrition & health Home and Family includes project work in child development, intergenerational, family relations, clothing, consumer education and interior design Engineering & Technology includes project work in aerospace, bicycles, computer, electricity, safety, GIS/GPS, small engines, tractor, welding and woodworking Personal Development includes project work in communication, photography, visual arts, leadership, recreation and theater arts Plants & Soils includes project work in crops, horticulture, and plant & soil science Project Blue Awards 4-Hers who have already won a medal in a certain project area, but still do good work in that area, may apply for a BLUE AWARD CERTIFICATE. You cannot apply for a blue award until you have already received the medal!!!! MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: Complete the 4-H Highlights form and a White County General Award Application (front only) for each blue award they are applying for. MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: Complete the 4-H Highlights form and a White County General Award Application (front & back sides) for each medal they are applying for. Check the past winners list to be certain they have not previously been awarded a medal. Special Electricity Award 4-Hers who complete the Electricity Project may wish to apply for this special state award. The ILLINOIS ELECTRIFICATION COUNCIL PLAQUE can only be won once in 4-H career MEMBER S APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Complete the 4-H Highlights form and the White County General Award Application (front & back sides). Victory Awards Small gifts are awarded to the top 4-H applicant in each club in each of the following age divisions: (AGE 8 OR 9) (AGE 10 OR 11) (AGE 12) A county winner from each age is also selected. Outstanding First Year Member Two camp scholarships (valued at $140) are awarded to the top two first year members in the county. Encouragement Award The ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD is intended to encourage children to keep trying their best. Nominees should have completed the 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th grade. Four youth are selected annually, and the award can only be won once in the 4-Her s career. MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: None. LEADER RESPONSIBILITY: Prepare the Encouragement Award Application. Community Involvement Award Cash prizes ($25, $15, $10) are awarded to the top three essays in both age categories: (age 8-12) (age 13-18) MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: Complete the 4-H Highlights form and the White County Community Involvement Award Application form which includes your essay question. Corn King & Corn Queen The Carmi Kiwanis joins 4-H in honoring the top boy & top girl 4-Her each year. The Corn King & Corn Queen are joined by four male and four female attendants and reign over the annual Corn Day activities. They also receive cash bonds & prizes from the Kiwanis Club. Candidates must be at least 14 years old. MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: Complete the 4-H Highlights form, sign the Corn Day Royalty Intent to Participate form and participate in an interview with the 4-H Leadership Committee. I Dare You Award The I DARE YOU AWARD is intended to reward high school 4-Hers who demonstrate outstanding leadership, compassion and character. Nominees should have completed the 9 th grade. Four youth are selected annually, and the award can only be won once in the 4-Her s career. MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: None. LEADER RESPONSIBILITY: Prepare the I Dare You Award Application. Officer Awards Special prizes are given to the following top club officers: President MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: Write an essay about your leadership as the club s president. Include your involvement in preparing the club agenda, planning programs, assisting members, holding officer meetings, etc. which might give a clue into how you personally led your 4-H club. Secretary MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: Submit secretary book and all supplemental material. The secretary s book may be typed instead of handwritten, but all additional sections of the secretary s book must be completed. Treasurer MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: Submit treasurer book, bank statements and all supplemental material. THE AUDIT MUST BE COMPLETED AND SIGNED. Office Reporter MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: None. Forms have been collected at the county office each month. Newspaper Reporter MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: Submit all club reports. You must submit actual copies which appeared in the newspaper or photocopies of the actual stories. Scrapbook MEMBER S APPLICATION PROCESS: Submit club scrapbook. LEADER RESPONSIBILITY: Complete the Club Officer Transmittal Form.

10 4-H Show Wrap-Up! Horse Show The 4-H Horse show was held once again at the Dorothy and Jerry Sutton Farm near Norris City. Members competed for highpoint trophies in horsemanship and showmanship classes and also enjoyed several fun activities, such as the egg and spoon race, barrel races, pole races, and a catalog race. This year the senior horsemanship division winner was Bethany Harl and the junior horsemanship winner was Riley Price. Winners of the fun events (i.e. egg and spoon race, catalog race, pole bending, barrel and flag races) were Bethany Harl (senior division) and Olivia Bohleber (junior division). Altogether nine riders participated in this year s 4-H horse show contests. Dogs, Cats, and Small Pets Saturday afternoon, the smaller animal shows were held including dogs, cats, and other small pets. The judging for these shows began at 1:30 p.m. at the White County fairgrounds. The dog show concluded with the dog obedience contest. Sadie, owned by Claudia Whetstone of Carmi, was the overall winner of the dog obedience contest and the best of show winner in dog care at this year s show. Best of show recipient in cat care was Madison Childers. Food Show The 4-H food show was held on Monday, July 12. This year there are more than 100 individual exhibits ready for judging at the annual show. These projects ranged from the introductory cooking projects involving cookie and coffeecakes to the advanced projects including pastry shells, yeast bread rolls, and homemade candies. The table decorating contest was an exciting highlight of the food show. Members who registered for this project built a table setting and decoration around the theme. The overall winner of this year s table decorating contest was Mattie Colbert. Other participants included Olivia Bohleber, Madison Roberson, and Caitlin South. Clothing Show The clothing show was also held on Monday, July 12 at 12:30. Clothing exhibitors had the option of making or purchasing their garments. These members also modeled their garments at the fashion revue, during the 4-H awards program on Wednesday evening. Rabbits Eva Nelson-Ochs won best of show rabbit in this year s competition, along with several other blue ribbons and best awards. Congratulations to ALL participants. Sisters Hannah and Samantha Gowdy won Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion fryers at this year s 4-H rabbit show. National rabbit judge and breeder Billy Dodge judged the rabbit show on Monday afternoon in the rabbit barn at the fairgrounds. General Projects On Tuesday, July 13 members brought several general projects to the White County fairgrounds for conference-style judging. Members worked a full year on everything from visual arts projects to welding projects to electricity and journalism projects. 4-H Olympics The first annual 4-H Olympics were held during the general projects show. Several youth participated in the fun games to help pass time during general show judging. Participation prizes this year were donated by Carmi McDonalds and Carmi Dairy Queen. Carmi Showtime Cinemas also donated movie tickets for the 4-H Olympian, Olivia Bohleber. Tug-o-War, water gun style, was also held under the large shade trees behind the floral hall. Thank you to everyone who participated! Auction of Blue Ribbon Animals The Annual 4-H Auction of Blue Ribbon Animals was held at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening, July 14. This year, businesses and individuals did well in encouraging the 4-H program. $25, was raised at this year s blue ribbon auction, almost $10, more than in Returning as guest auctioneers in 2010 were Rick Davis and George Johnson, with Matt Madewell acting as ringman and Bryan Weaver serving as photographer. In addition to animals, plates of cookies and other baked goods were sold throughout the auction, so that buyers could support the 4-H program at all levels of donations. A special thanks to Nancy Colbert, Betty and Marcy Fechtig, and Carolyn Price for donating these sweet treats for the auction. Carcass Contest Seven White County 4-H members participated in the joint-carcass contest this year. The carcass contest, held on Friday, July 16, welcomed both White County 4-H members along with Wayne County 4-Hers for a combined carcass contest at 2 p.m. The carcasses were scored on ribeye/chop area, rate of gain, marbling and color. The overall winner from White County was Madison Roberson of Norris City with her swine entry. The 2010 contest was fully funded by Enfield Packing Plant.
