2 New Mexico 4-H Celebrates 100 Years! In 1911, as Boys and Girls Industrial Clubs organized, county superintendents of schools served as supervisors of county clubs. Each local school district had a chartered local club which was part of the county club, a forerunner of our 4- H County Councils we have today! During 1912, outlines of club work in crops, bread, and sewing were published in The College Record and sent out over central and eastern sections of the state. In January of that year, New Mexico Agricultural College and the Santa Fe Railway ran an agricultural train on all parts of the system. This demonstration train ran from Anthony to Raton, Albuquerque to Clovis, and from Clovis to Carlsbad. Special sessions here held for youth sharing information about organizing clubs in their area. 5 Help Us Grow More New Mexico YHEC Teams Recognized as the most comprehensive youth hunting program anywhere in North America, the Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) is the National Rifle Association s (NRA) graduate studies program in outdoor skills and safety training for young hunters. Open only to those who have completed hunter-safety training at the state level, the program is conducted under simulated hunting conditions to provide the best practical environment for reinforcing and testing a young hunter s skills. From rifle, shotgun, bow and muzzleloader shooting at life-sized targets, to wildlife identification, to map-and-compass orienteering and more, YHEC participants get hands-on training in eight skills areas, giving them expertise in all methods of take, all types of game and many different target presentations. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is looking to help develop more YHEC teams in our state. Existing teams hail from towns and cities including Portales, Dona Ana County, Las Cruces, Messilla Park, Clovis, Albuquerque, Carlsbad, Texico, Holman, La Mesa, Regina and Sandia Park. We would like to see more teams from urban areas and northern New Mexico. Nationwide, YHEC programs hosted by volunteer instructors draw an estimated 50,000 youths each year. Top ranked individuals advance to compete in the annual NRA International Youth Hunter Education Challenge, the pinnacle of the YHEC program. Every other year, the event is held at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton. Since its inception in 1985, YHEC has reached more than a million young sportsmen and women. For more information on starting or growing a YHEC team in your area, please contact: Lance Cherry - lance.cherry@state.nm.us (505) Jennifer Morgan - jennifer.morgan@state.nm.us (505) Mark Gruber - mgruber@state.nm.us (505)

Nomination forms are available on the State 4-H website and there is a $20 nomination fee. The 2 year old western pleasure futurity is for 2 year old horse which have been nominated, trained, entered and ridden by the 4-H member. NO other person can ride or show the horse. 4-H members can get on ground help and advice, but they are the only ones that can ride the horse. The same is true for the 3 year old versatility. However, these nominees need to have been nominated for the 2 year old western pleasure futurity and then as a 3 year old versatility horse. Watch for details in future newsletter. Horse Certificates are one of those documents that 4-H members enrolled in the horse project need to do every year. The horse certificate is a form similar to a registration form. You can find it on the State 4-H website under forms and publications. They are due on April 15 to the Extension Office. Why do 4-H ers have to submit a certificate every year? Horses get sold, traded and or leased. This is unique aspect to a project. This is the only way that we can verify that the horse being used as the project horse, is for a 4-H member to document that they are the exhibitor, lessor or owner of that particular horse. 4-H members must submit a horse certificate for any horse that you may have to use as your project for the year.

12 4-H Field Trip to Santa Fe On Monday, February 20th, twenty-three Sandoval County 4-H ers went on the Rail Runner to Santa Fe. The group went to lunch at the Burrito Co. and then had free time to walk around the plaza. Then 4-H ers went inside the Roundhouse so they could learn about it. The tour guide showed us many of the rooms including the House of Representatives chamber gallery, and the Governor s reception area and art gallery. The tour guide said that Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in the U.S. and many other interesting facts. After the Roundhouse tour, the 4-H group went back on the train to go to the Bernalillo Rail Runner station. The fieldtrip was a great opportunity to learn about how and where our laws are made and to visit with friends! On February 28th, 5th graders from Rio Rancho, Corrales & Jemez Valley Public Schools went to Kids, Kows & More. The event was hosted by the NMSU s Sandoval County Cooperative Extension Service and The Southwest Dairy Farmers at the Corrales recreation center. 4-H county council officers helped out by escorting the kids from station to station. Kids, Kows & More! You could learn interesting fact about agriculture and how products are made, meet farm animals in person, learn about bee keeping, wool production, and dairy cow milking. The sheep shearer said that when the lambs are about to be born, he shears the mother so the babies can find the milk to nurse. The weaving station talked about using Kool Aid to dye their yarn. I was a good learning experience because it is important for children to learn about agriculture so they know that clothes come from materials like wool and not just from a store. They need to know that milk comes from a cow before it gets to the grocery store. The 4-H officers got to have the experience of being in charge of a big group of 5th graders. Over 850 youth were bussed in from Corrales, Jemez, and Rio Rancho Public Schools. Jayne Clifton Fife, 4-H County Council Reporter

13 New Mexico Youth Ranch Management Camp New Mexico State University s Cooperative Extension Service anticipates repeating the success of last year s New Mexico Youth Ranch Management Camp by hosting the second annual event June 3 8, 2012 at the Valles Caldera National Preserve in northern New Mexico.
