1 BALMAIN LITTLE ATHLETICS CENTRE Firstly, many thanks to all those athletes, parents and friends who turned out to support our Guinness World Record Attempt. As most of you will already know we amassed 560 puts over 2m on the day and are now awaiting official ratification of our World Record Holder status! It was great to see our famous BLAC club spirit in action, and we hope to hold more of these fun and friendly events in the future. For those of you who missed the fun, check out the pictures on page 8. Whilst Saturday competition continues apace, at this point in the season our thoughts start to turn to the inter-club carnivals, starting at the end of the month with the NSW State Relay Championships at Homebush. Congratulations to all those athletes who have been selected to represent the Club as part of the State Relay squad. We wish you luck and lots of fun as you step up to the next level of competition and enjoy the opportunity to compete at Olympic Park. All those who are taking part in the State Relay Championships please ensure you have received and read the briefing notes for important information about programme, uniform code, training and parental assistance. As with all Little A s events, State Relays is run entirely by volunteers and it is vital for all parents to complete a duty for the event to run smoothly. See you at the Oval, David Our First Personal Best Winners Congratulations go to Jackson Kaufmann (U12) who won the U8-U17 Personal Best Award and Zoe Howdin (U6) and Freya Cleary (U7) who shared the U6-U7 Personal Best Award. 3 HEADS UP FOR ZONE Zone Championships are held in each of the 24 Zones throughout NSW. Balmain is in the Inner City Zone, with Eastern Suburbs, South Eastern, Randwick-Botany, Canterbury, Western Suburbs & Tigers Wests. This is the first stage competition en-route to the Regional Championship to be held at Sylvania Waters on February 2014 and the NSW State Championships on March 2014 at Homebush. U7-U17 athletes are able to participate. The first 6 places from Zone progress to the Regional Championships, along with the next 4 best qualifiers from Inner City and Southern Metropolitan Zones. U7 athletes do not progress past the Zone championships. Athletes in the U9-U17 age groups that meet the qualifying criteria at the Regional Championship then progress to the State level. This year the Inner City Zone championships will be held on 25 th and 26 th January at ES Marks near Centennial Park. U7-U12's may compete in up to 4 events. - U17's may compete in up to 6 events. Balmain is able to enter a maximum of 4 athletes per event. Given the large number of athletes this year, we are anticipating an oversubscription of entries in some events, particularly in the younger age groups. We will try to accommodate all interested athletes but higher ranked will take precedence. The ranking will be based on results achieved at Saturday competition. The committee may also consider results from NSWPSSA Championships, CIS or NSWCPS or official competitions run and recognised by Little Athletics NSW. Athletes must any ratified results, outside club competition, that they would like to be considered ASAP to timbatho@hotmail.com. Application forms and further details will be available from the BLAC website in the next few days. An entry fee of $15 will apply for each athlete. The cost includes the supply of a Zone team t-shirt. Entries will close on Saturday 7 th December. Interested athletes will be asked to nominate their preferred events plus any others in which they would be interested to compete. Athletes will be advised of their events by Thursday, 12 th December via . A table will be set up on Saturday, 14th December to collect the entry fee of $15 and confirm the required t-shirt size. An athlete s entry will not be confirmed until payment is received. Please be aware that for each athlete entered, parents or carers are committing to perform a rostered duty of hours at the Zone Championships. We have applied for a grant under the NSW Government s Community Building Partnership program, to improve facilities at KGO. This includes the addition of long jump runways and throwing cages These facilities will help the club greatly in improving the capacity and safety. You can help us by sending an to our local Member, Jamie Parker expressing support for the grant application. The should be addressed to Jamie.Parker@parliament.nsw.gov.au. Or info@balmainlac.org.au and we can send you a proforma letter

4 PEOPLE IN PROFILE U17s Fran Potter and Andreas Damouras are in their 13th and 12th seasons respectively at BLAC. They ve lived through 6 Club Presidents, several uniform changes and more weekly programmes that you could shake a stick at. As 2013/14 is their last season as Little Athletes, we caught up with Fran and Andreas to find out what s kept them coming back to the oval, and what advice they would give younger athletes about how to get as much out of the Little A s experience as they have. FRAN When and how did you come to join Balmain Little Athletics? We came back from living in Singapore and my parents enrolled my older sister and I into little athletics because they thought it would be fun and healthy. What have been your favourite events?. When I was younger I used to enjoy most events including most field events and middle distance. As I got older I started to specialise and focus on events that I was better in and these include the 1500m walk & run and Javelin. What s the event you love to hate? The 1500m Walk because I don't really enjoy the event itself too much in that it is hard and straining, but it is what I do best in. What are your 3 most memorable moments from Little A s? Achieving Zone, Regional, and State levels for the first time; Organising and participating in March pasts at Zone with streamers and balloons; Egg and Bacon Rolls! Many people drop out of Little A s when they reach their teens, What would you tell the U12-14 athletes about why it s good to stay through Seniors? Keeping up Athletics through seniors helps you build friendships, improve in events and specialise. It also keeps you busy when you may otherwise stay in bed all morning and helps you to be well disciplined in having healthy & fun commitments, and short and long term goals. If you could go back in time and talk to the U9 aged Fran, what advice would you give her about how to get the most out of her Little A s experience? I would tell her to keep up the sport and to give all her effort into each weekend competition. I remember when I was that age thinking that the place achieved in each event mattered the most, however this is not the case. The key is to concentrate on performing to make yourself feel good and get PBs rather than competing to win. What plans do you have for continuing to participate in athletics after this season? It would be a shame to stop the sport after enjoying and participating in Athletics for so long. This is why I plan to continue by participating in a seniors club, competitions, and continuing training to keep fit. ANDREAS When and how did you come to join Balmain Little Athletics? We heard about it at Birchgrove Public school from another family in kindy. What have been your favourite events?. High jump because there is no other event that is a knock out event. I also used to like walk and hurdles but not anymore. What s the event you love to hate? Long distance running because I suck at it! What are your 3 most memorable moments from Little A s? Coming 2nd at HJ the first time I did it at Zone; Sticking my weekly event tickets in the book (before we had the results on-line); Receiving my 10 year award; When the tree fell down just after I ran past the spot doing 800 m run. Many people drop out of Little A s when they reach their teens, What would you tell the U12-14 athletes about why it s good to stay through Seniors? It s good for fitness and all round sport so whatever other sports you want to do, keeping up athletics will help you. If you could go back in time and talk to the U9 aged Andreas, what advice would you give him about how to get the most out of his Little A s experience? No-one is naturally good at all events, just keep working at them to improve as much as you can. What plans do you have for continuing to participate in athletics after this season? I m not sure yet. I play Baseball with school and have become really interested in playing Volleyball, so I may specialise in that. See over for some fantastic photos of Fran and Andreas over their Little Athletics careers. Thanks to Sarina Damouras & Robin Hammond for the great shots

6 BEYOND BALMAIN NSW All Schools Success Over 1200 secondary school athletes recently converged on Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre for the NSW All Schools Track & Field Championships; the state championships for secondary school athletes. The event incorporates athletes from all sectors of the school system, (Government, Catholic and Independent), and has a long and rich history. Balmain was well represented, in hot and windy conditions, by Lara Bosnich, Susie Douglas, Jamie Karabesinis, Marnie Clarkson, Alex Kerr, Clementine Landels, Georgia Page, Annabelle Parmigiani, Frances Potter, Holly Campbell and Paige Campbell. There were some great results, with 6 medals won and many finalists, including: Gold- Clementine Landels 14yrs 90mH and 200mH. Silver Annabelle Parmigiani 16yrs High Jump. Bronze- Paige Campbell 17yrs 1500m, Holly Campbell 17yrs 800m & Jamie Karabesinis 12yrs Long Jump. Clementine will now compete at the Australian All Schools Championships in Townsville. Golden Girls Two of our girls shone brightly in their respective school State competitions this month. In the NSW PSSA (primary schools) competition, Sara Dougan made a clean sweep in the sprinting events bagging golds in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay all in personal best times. A fantastic achievement. Meanwhile, in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges competition (the State level competition for the Catholic High schools) Lara Bosnich collected golds in the 100m and 200m and a bronze in the 800m. In other notable performances at NSW PSSA Angus Beer continued a superb middle distance season with a win in the 11B 800m, with Ethan Brouw finishing 4 th in the same race. Matilda Swan made the final of the 12G 100m (won by Sara Dougan), with Eliza Swan reaching the semi-final. Sam Chen also reached the semi-final round of his 100m (U10B). Well done to all the Balmain athletes who competed at the State level. We are very proud of your achievements. And good luck to Sara & Angus who will now progress to the National PSSA round. 7 SENIORS NEWS In only its second year, the newly reformed Balmain Athletics Club has got the Sydney athletics community talking as the season has been set alight by a small but growing number of Balmain athletes. The interclub competition, The Treloar Shield, involves 37 clubs and is based upon eight rounds at various venues around greater Sydney. In a tremendous opening effort in Round 1 at SOPAC, Balmain found itself placed 7 th in the strong Junior division and 1 st in the Masters (over 35) division. With an incredible combined effort Balmain earned 1079 points on the day to be edged into 3rd place overall in the Treloar Shield by Sydney University with points. It was fantastic for such a small club to knock off much larger, stronger and well known athletics clubs and challenge the might of Sydney University. Notable efforts came from Clem Landels (U15) who won both the 90m and 200m hurdles races, Annabelle Parmiagani (U17) and Ethan Brouw () who both finished 2 nd in their respective HJ and Angus Beer who finished 4 th in the 3000m. Ethan and Angus are 11 year olds competing in the. A number of BLAC parents donned the Black & Gold for the first time and competed in the Masters. Congratulations to Alice Bohdan who won the 80m Hurdles and finished 2 nd in HJ and TJ, and to Robert Kaufmann who won the 110m Hurdles and finished 3 rd in the TJ. Round 2 required the expert use of a map and compass to find Illawong. Carys Batho competed well finishing with a string of 3 rd places in the Javelin, Discus and Shot Put and Marnie Clarkson started her season with a 3 rd in the U17 Discus. The more central location of ES Marks for Round 3 enabled Balmain to put a larger and stronger team on the track. Marnie Clarkson achieved a seasons best in the HJ, Alice Bohdan won the HJ and TJ and Holly Campbell finished 7 th in a large Open 800m field. Competition returned to SOPAC for Round 4 which saw plenty of technical events, playing to Balmain s strengths. Balmain won the Masters division for the second time this year which enabled the club to hold onto 4 th place in the overall Treloar Shield. Round 5 gets underway on Saturday 29 th November. All athletes in the s and above qualify for free registration with Balmain Athletics Club. It is not too late to register, just contact Kim Gane or register via the AthleticsNSW website. You just need to know your Little Athletics number on your singlet. It is great fun and you compete against athletes your own age at Sydney s best Athletics facilities. Competition continues after Christmas with Multi- Event, Allcomers, Club Championship and State Championship events. The full competition grid available from ANW website via the following link: 20Post%20Xmas%20Competition%20Grid%20for% 20Web.pdf It seems our Seniors are a bit camera shy so we have no pictures of them in action this month. Instead here s one of my favourite Usain Bolt quotes. If you have a favourite inspirational quote to share with the BLAC community, please it to info@balmainlac.org.au. Good luck to our 2 Masters teams competing in the Athletics NSW Seniors State Relay Competition at Homebush this weekend. Bring us back some medals, guys!
