1 Nov Art Opportunity High Winds Challenge Black Betsy Sailors Have you noticed the Regatta art hanging in the clubhouse? They are mounted on a heavy wooden panel with a brilliant UV scratch-free glossy finish. They're ready to hang, no need to frame. In case you don't know Cris, she is a well known local artist and has commissioned art installed in the Murray Nelson Center and other public buildings. She was the designer and lead artist for the Flagler Train mural at MM Cris's business is Eldorado Graphics where she does commercial art and design for printing and she also teaches oil painting at the Ocean Reef Art League. She has designed a majority of our T-shirts here at UKSC for the last 27 years and did the "Sunfish Beach" painting behind our serving table. The paintings are 16 x 24, cost $150 with a portion of the money going to the UKSC Gate Fund. Contact Cris or cris9@comcast.net It has long been felt that an electric front gate would be an asset to the club, allowing members to easily enter the grounds when the club is closed during the week. Just by entering a code or using an access card, the gate will slide open with the help of an electric motor. The Gate Fund has raised funds through donations and proceeds from auctions, but it still needs more funding and needs your help. True to tradition, Black Betsy was raced on a windy, blustery day! Two boats started, one finished and one turned back. Congratulations to Dick Saylor on Saylorman II and his dedicated crew as they braved high winds and sailed 12.5 miles one way, to finish under reefed main and jib, and turn around for the (thankfully) downwind ride home. Karl Langefeld, his crew Wavy Davy, and his dog Brandy, started the race his Sanderling, Katzenjammer. But as Karl reported to me via a phone call later, even with two reefs in the sail, they were knocked down twice and each time took on a LOT of water. They had to sail downwind to get the water out through the scuppers, and just kept going towards home. Race committee did not fare so well, either. (Get the whole story from someone at the Club). No one was hurt, and the boat was fine, but it was an adventure! Pontoon boats are not meant to drive in three foot waves! Fleet Captain Ginette Hughes Dick Saylor, aboard Saylorman II, with his dedicated crew braved high winds to be the only boat to finish the Black Betsy Race Nov. 2014, Page 1

3 The Month in Review Dockmaster s Regatta Many thanks to our hard working Dockmasters, Guy and Sallie, for the wonderful Regatta weekend. The t-shirts were a great hit, and the Mediterraneanthemed dinner was delicious! Sallie made the regatta dinner entrée of Chicken Marbello and the Moudardara rice. And Frigge and Don Tucgu made the salads and baklava. It was a non-stop weekend with a lot of fun. In addition to the the Dockmaster s Regatta itself (Portsmouth and PHRF races), there were three entries in the Recycled Boat Building Contest. Prizes were awarded to Sara Kahler and her winner of the 3 and under, 6-pack carrying class, and Guy Lange for the larger, human cargo model (A-hem...the only entry in that class!). Thanks Gina Dunnett and Sara Kahler for the great minute-by-minute, blow-by-blow photos! (See page 6 for photos). And thanks to all the members who helped make this weekend a great success: Gina Dunnett, Bill Stanard, Frigge and Don Tucgu, Juan Soriano, Steve Friedman, Cathie and Stuart Fox, Larry Thorson, Dave White, and Brenda and Ladd Lewis. Boat-Naming Celebration Bill Stanard invited everyone to an official and traditional renaming ceremony of his new boat, and home, on November 7 at the Club. The new name of the 41 Hatteras (where are the sails, Bill?) is Coast Pilot. This is an ancient ritual but included some not so ancient libations. Invocations were made to Poseidon, god of the sea, and the god of the winds. Fair winds and calm seas to Bill and Coast Pilot. Adult Learn-to-Sail Classes The second of the Adult Learn-to-Sail Class Series took place at the Club on October On page 4 of this Signals is an article submitted by one of our novice sailors, after the first class in September. Thank you, Gina Dunnett for your comments and insights. Looking forward to more of your insights. Halloween Party This year s Halloween party began with the following announcement: Pumpkins and zombies and witches green All mark the coming of Halloween! This year the Club will host a night, Guaranteed to give all a fright... And true to form UKSC members rose to the occasion. A great turnout with so many in costume. And the dishes were fantastic!! Did you all enjoy dining at the cadaver buffet? Thank you to everyone for the great display of Halloween spirit. Your enthusiasm was the recipe for a successful evening. A special shout out to everyone that helped us set-up or take down the decorations, including the haunted house entrance to the Club. Kathy Lyden and Tony Tufano, prospective members volunteering at the event, were key to getting it ready in time! Sharon Berry was an excellent MC and organizer, who partnered with Gina Dunnett to help pull it all together. Dave White, Karaoke Master, got folks up on their feet, singing and dancing to round out the evening. Thanks to our wonderful Dockmasters, Guy and Sallie Lange, for holding everything together, and keeping us all happy through the evening. And...three cheers to Guy for taking down all the staples! Thanks to the folks who contributed dishes to the food competition. And thanks to all for wearing your most wonderful Halloween regalia. And the winners were: Food entries: Appetizer Judy Lever-Duffy, Guacamole Ghost Main Dish Helen Koenig, Pumpkin Turkey Chili Dessert Anne O Neil, Ghoulish Jello Shots Best Dish Made with Pumpkin - Helen Koenig, Pumpkin Turkey Chili Costumes: Jelly Fish Ken & Janet Pangborn Swashbuckler & his Pirate Wife Ladd & Brenda Lewis Gangster & his gal - Bill & Pam Ellis Wicked Witch & her Bat Leah White & Pearl Save the Tatas Bruce & Gina Dunnett Nov. 2014, Page 3

4 Sailing for Newbies Advice from A Green Novice As a new member, I was delighted to be included in the UKSC s Beginner Sailor lessons. Early on in our marriage I was brought along to sail with my husband to offer both decorative value and ballast. Now it was my turn to sail properly and actually get to know what to do and why. Thank you to Ginette Hughes, Joe Worley and Stu Fox for your gracious giving of your time and for your never ending patience with this true novice. I always believe in passing on what you have learned pay it forward, as they say. So, to all you Newbies out there, here is my list of what the experienced sailor really means. Main sheet: Now I am very familiar with the flat and the fitted sheet. So I made the assumption I knew what the mainsheet was. Folks, it s not the sail. Even though the only thing on a boat that looks like a sheet is a sail, that s not correct. The sheets are ropes. Ropes: Actually they are indeed ropes but no one calls them ropes. They are halyards, sheets or lines. Personally, if you are instructed to pull the red and white rope you are more likely to get it the first time. Hang in there, Newbie. After a few calls for you to raise the sheets and grab the halyard, you will figure it out. The Painter: Don t look for the guy on the dock with the brush in his hand. You won t find him or his Wet Paint sign. It s the rope you use to tie the boat to the posts on the dock. Oops,I mean line. Block: Now, you would think a block would be square, right? I mean, when we were kids, did we all not stack square blocks? Discard that knowledge, Newbie, the block is actually a circle a hole you put the line through. Think of it as threading a needle with a round eye. Tightening or letting out the lines: A big deal is made about the technique. Newbies, can I tell you, simply think about your window blinds. Pretend you are letting the blinds go up or down and fixing them in place. You will have the hang of it in no time. Boom: This is the hard wooden or aluminum rod at the bottom of the main sail. I think it is called a boom because, if you don t watch your head, you might get hit and go boom Vang: I was sure they were saying the fang, and I kept looking for some pointy thing that I might scratch myself on. A vang keeps the boom down, but does not keep it from hitting you if you are not paying attention. So you still need to be aware, but Dracula is not onboard! Futtock This is not a phrase intended to refer to a fat backside. They are the wooden ribs that may be visible in a boat. Ho Relax ladies. Pirates may have had wenches, but no one is hurling an insult. Ho seems to be added for emphasis. A little stronger than the eh Canadians tack onto the end of a sentence. Land ho, heave ho, lee ho. Ho hum. I am told a Close Fetch is a Reach. So I went to my Labrador for consultation, as he is the best creature at fetching that I am aware of. If you throw a ball straight up in the air, the dog doesn t need to run, but he may need to leap up to grab it. So I believe I can confirm that a Close Fetch is a Reach. I can t wait to learn more in Sailing 201!!!! Thanks again to Stu Fox for all his patience. No doubt with more practice I will get the lingo down. In my defense I have to say that I think my crew knew what I meant when I said Prepare to make a left turn Left turn-ho! Contributed to Signals by Gina Dunnett. Thank you. Nov. 2014, Page 4
