UKSC GOES BACK TO THE 80S Summer Series #5 After Party Saturday, August 1 It s not every day the likes of David Lee Roth, Cyndi Lauper, and MC Hammer are spotted around the Club! But, thanks to Gina Dunnett, the 80s throwback party was a totally bitchin success, with everyone (Chip, Barb, and Bruce especially!) having a fantabuloso good time reliving those BIIIIIG hairbear days. Dinner included delish ribs and chicken prepared by Gina and Bruce, along with Sharon Berry. Then there was a contest for best duds (because, yes, some of us really did wear all that stuff!). A mega gnarly game of Trivial Pursuit followed, as well as dancing to lots of sick tunes from the 80s. Mondo thanks to our primo clean- up crew: Sharon Berry, Helen and Larry Koenig, Dennis and Sara Kahler, and Lynda Munshower. 2 SUMMER SERIES #5 The Season is Sailing On Saturday, August 1 & Sunday August 2 Despite a slow start due to a near no wind situation at first, the breeze eventually picked up and UKSC sailors were able to enjoy another day of excellent sailing out on Buttonwood Sound. Congratulations to our Series #5 finishers: PHRF Results: 1 st Pat McLaughlin on JibSea, 2 nd Larry and Helen Koenig on Helen K, and 3 rd Dick Saylor on Saylorman 2. Portsmouth Results: 1 st Leah White, 2 nd Steve Perry, 3 rd Dave White, 4 th Bruce McCord, and 5 th Paco Calvet. NOTE FROM THE FLEET CAPTAIN: Have you raced in 4 races since April 4? If not, there's still time to qualify by working the upcoming Labor Day Regatta, the last race of the series on 9/26 & 9/27, or the Club 420s on 10/3 & 10/ , Volume 42; Issue 9 (September) 2

UKSC LADIES EXPLORE THEIR ARTISTIC SIDE Proving That Talent On and Off The Water Abounds Friday, August 14 In case anyone noticed some conspicuous absences at Happy Hour, there was a reason. A number of our ladies gathered at Art Box for a Wine & Paint Friday Night. Although we asked for a sailing theme, everyone interpreted the subject very differently and beautifully! A testament to the group of talented individuals we are blessed to have in our club. After the paint was dry, the group THEN made their way to the club to display the masterpieces. Special thanks to Ginette Hughes for organizing this amazing event, and sparking all this creativity. 2015, Volume 42; Issue 9 (September) 3

DOG DAYS REGATTA AND AFTER PARTY A Damp But Doggone Good Time Saturday, August 15 After weeks of near drought conditions, Mother Nature chose the Dog Days Regatta to shower us with much- needed rain. This caused a delayed start and finally resulted in a cancellation. Our intrepid sailors returned safely to shore and the welcoming respite of the club, ready to feast on traditional Dog Days fare: Hot Dogs. This year, however, they got to fancy up their franks with 32 different tasty toppings. The event committee, headed by Sharon Berry, dished up everything needed to build a gourmet hot dog. From New York and New Jersey, to San Francisco, Kansas City, El Paso and more, no wiener style was left behind! Thanks goes out to Sharon and her prep team, Nina Griffiths and Liz Hooker, and to our grill masters, Dennis Kahler, Guy Lange, and Brent Hooker. And many special thanks to Ginette Hughes for sticking around to help with the clean up. SEPT MEMBERSHIP SPECIAL: FREE DRINKS! 1 Free Drink for Every Prospective New Member You Bring to a Club Event! Month of September Vice Commodore Stu Fox and the Membership Committee invite you to treat a friend to 1 FREE drink when they come in to check out our club benefits. Membership and dockage opportunities abound. As current membership Stu has a goal of adding 25 new friends over the coming months, and he needs all of us to join the effort. With 9 slips now open (a key revenue source of $200/month), new members with boats are VERY welcome. Keeping the UKSC alive and thriving depends on all of us working together to attract and retain members. So bring a friend and treat them to a FREE drink! (One time offer only) The UKSC depends on the 3- Ds of Club revenue: Dues, Docks, & Drinks. 2015, Volume 42; Issue 9 (September) 4

SUMMER SAILING STORIES Our Hurricane Birds Have Been Very Busy This Season Tom Jett s Summer Story Tom is a crewman on the tall ship Friends Good Will, owned by the Michigan Maritime Museum. The replica of an early 19 th century merchant ship is a traditionally rigged square topsail sloop (LWL 55', LOA 105' and 55 tons). The original was built in 1820 and was captured by the British early in the war of 1812, fought in the battle of Lake Erie on the British side, and was then captured by Commodore Perry and returned to the US side. It was eventually burned by the British in Buffalo, NY in From Memorial Day through Labor Day, Tom and crew take tourists out on Lake Michigan for 4 sails per day, as well as chartering for school groups. The 2- hour evening sunset sail is the highlight of every day ending with no less than a firing of the ship's cannon. In April and May, Tom and crew up rig, do maintenance, and training sails; in Sept and Oct they run charters and down rig. You can get hear more about Tom s tall ship experience when he s back home in late October. Editor s note: We want to share YOUR summer adventure with members too! Please send pics and a description to: elizabeth.b.hooker@gmail.com. Dave Adamusko s & Lindi Mallison s Summer Story It seems tall ships were a staple of this year s summer adventures. Wavey Davey and Lindi travelled to Baltimore, MD to see the replica of Lafayette's personal flagship, on which he sailed from France to the Americas in "L'Hermione" is an impressive 217 feet long. It is now on its maiden voyage along the east coast, soon to return to France. And, understandably, it s causing quite a stir everywhere it goes! Wavey Davey and Lindi will be back in late October to share more tales of their summer. Henry and Lynne Springler s Summer Story Newport, RI is the summer destination for the Springlers. They spend the warm months sailing around the area on their Nonsuch, Tiger Lily. In fact, their boat has become a bit of a local celebrity, even making the front page of the Newport Daily News! 2015, Volume 42; Issue 9 (September) 5

THE GREAT GREASED WATERMELON GRAB Piracy and Hijinx Reign Yet Again Saturday, August 23 UKSC members proved that everyone is 5 years old at heart and sometimes NOT playing well with others is the most fun! The Great Greased Watermelon Relays saw a good deal of all- in- fun roughhousing as 15 members teamed up in groups of 3 to race the Waves out into the bay to our melon coral and then bring them back to shore. Thievery and mischief marked a hilarious day that saw Team 5 (Jim Fish Enright, Helen Koenig, and the Norrie Clan) claiming victory. Special thanks to Ginette Hughes for planning and overseeing this year s Grab and to Fish for his help as our greasy melon wrangler (corraling the 7 pounders in the bay is not an easy job!) NEW SAILOR JOINS THE CLUB Congrats Judith & Kenyon! Saturday, August 15 Welcome Zander Langford to the UKSC. Our new sailor was born on August 15 at 9:53, weighing in at 6 lbs, 11 oz. Mom, Dad, and their handsome little guy are home and doing well. And, judging from his stylish nautical- themed baby wear, he s ready to start sailing any day! 2015, Volume 42; Issue 9 (September) 6

PRODUCTS FOR HEALTHY SEAS Making Choices to Help Protect Our Ocean By Lindi Mallison & Liz Hooker Sailors know the value of protecting our precious ocean environment. Although threats like warming water and acidification, over/destructive fishing, and coastal development are the most well- known threats to the health of our seas and reefs, there are ways we can help protect the waters we love from hidden dangers. Problem: Innocent- seeming plastic- based microbeads are found in 100s of products from cleansers and creams, to toothpaste and more. Trouble is, they flow down the drain and are too small to be filtered out by treatment facilities, so they ultimately end up in the ocean. Along the way, they soak up all kinds of toxins, which pose a threat to the fish that swallow them and, in turn, to us when those fish wind up grilled, blackened, or fried on our plates. Solution: Plenty of biodegradable additives exfoliate just as well, including rice, apricot seeds, walnut and pecan shells, bamboo, and jojoba. So, check labels and keep chemical microbeads out of the ocean and off our menus. Problem: Four common sunscreen ingredients have been shown to directly lead to coral bleaching. They are oxybenzone (benzophenone- 3), butylparaben, octinoxate (Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), 4- methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC). 6,000 metric tons of sunscreen wash off swimmers annually, putting our coral reefs at risk of bleaching. (Cont d on next page ) CALENDAR OF REMAINING EVENTS FOR 2015 Plan Now And Don t Miss the Fun The cooler weather is now finally on its way and all our hurricane birds are migrating back to the Keys. Which means it s time to mark your calendar for all the fun events planned for the rest of the year: SEPTEMBER 9/6 Labor Day All- Comers (BYOM) 9/26-27 Summer Series #6 OCTOBER 10/10-11 Columbus Day Regatta 10/31 All- Comers & Halloween Party NOVEMBER 11/14-15 Dockmaster s Regatta 11/26 Thanksgiving at the Club DECEMBER 12/4 Christmas Tree Trim Party 12/5-6 Flail and Sail 12/12 Christmas Boat Parade 12/19 Christmas Party 12/31 New Year s Eve Party As always, be sure to watch your regularly, because you never know when another impromptu gathering (date & movie night, cookout, etc) might pop up that you won t want to miss out on! STUFF THE BUS SUCCESS Filled to the Brim Thanks to UKSC The United Way Stuff the Bus is a program to help less fortunate area kids begin their school year right. The UKSC Collection Box, filled to the brim with much- needed school supplies, along with a check for $75 in monetary donations, was delivered and received with much appreciation. Many heartfelt thanks to our members for supporting teachers and students with their donations! 2015, Volume 42; Issue 9 (September) 7

(Cont d from previous page ) Solution: Avoid sunscreens with the ingredients listed on the previous page. Look for ingredients including Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide. Also, look for products that are water resistant and stay on your body and out of the water. Use sunscreen labeled biodegradable that will breakdown in the marine environment. One last note: When choosing personal care products and sunscreens, fewer chemicals are always better (for us and our oceans) and that includes scented products which are chemical- based and not regulated. Beware of the words fragrance or parfum in ingredient lists, and choose unscented products whenever possible. Not only will the reef and all marine life thank you so will your fellow sailors. Here s to safe sailing on healthy seas! Come get involved and have fun with fellow sailors!!! We have a lot of events planned over the coming months and we need help. Ask Sara Kahler about how you can help plan, prep, and more. Check out our web site regularly for the latest news and more! You ll find photos, links, membership information, and much, much more. HURRICANE SAFETY A Helpful Checklist Although Erika fizzled out in the end, she was a timely reminder that we need to be ready in case another storm hits KL: Supplies to get ahead of time: Waterproof containers for key documents Batteries for radios and flashlights Flashlights and lanterns Propane and lantern fuel Containers for water and gasoline Ropes/straps and tarps/plastic sheeting Small camp stove Nails, bolts, and hand tools First- aid kit Portable ice chest for food storage General preparation: Determine where to move your boat Trim back dead wood from trees Check for loose rain gutters/downspouts If a hurricane watch is in effect: Check often for official updates Fill your car with gas Get money from the bank Moor boats or move to safe shelter Stock up on canned goods and refill Rx s Secure lawn furniture/loose outdoor items Shutter or board windows (if non impact) Wedge sliding doors to prevent lifting If a hurricane warning is issued: Leave areas at risk of tides/flooding and leave early, in daylight if possible Shut off water and electricity Take small valuables, but travel light If you can t take pets, bring them in and leave food/water (shelters won t take them) Move valuables to upper floors Fill bathtub(s) for several days of water Turn refrig to coldest and don t open door Stay indoors on downwind side of the house More info is available from the Monroe County Emergency Management: specialsections/monroe%20county%20emergency% 20Management%20and%20Survival%20Guide.pdf 2015, Volume 42; Issue 9 (September) 8
