1 Windjammer Issue No. 399 Fremont Sailing Club, P.O. Box 793 Fremont, CA April, 2002 C o m m odore s Log It looks like the "Saga of the Dredging of Lake Elizabeth" marches on, with the start of the project finally eminent! We're being told we'll see the beginning of construction activity within two or three weeks, and thus when we start out the sailing season with the first race on May 5th, we'll be faced with a restricted lake, probably with floats across the lake between markers 3 and 7. We've sailed in such a restricted area before, a few years ago when the weed problem first appeared. It was a little tight, but workable, and a lot less trouble than picking up everything including marks, committee, equipment, and everybody else involved, and moving them to Timbuktu. Check the Board Meeting Minutes for the final decision on this matter. Thanks to Chuck St. Denis for stepping forward to become Lido Fleet Captain. I know that we all wish Chuck well in his new job and that we'll all be standing by to help make the job easier and assist him in his duties. The good part is that Jim Sterner and the rest of the Board have set up the schedule already so that part of the organizational work is done. We'll all have to step forward and volunteer for Race Committee duty and to serve as Fleet Meeting Hosts and event organizers. Thanks, Chuck, for rescuing the fleet and congratulations, Mr. Fleet Captain! Thanks to Jim Sterner for his great work in getting this year under way and for the quality job in publishing the Lido Fleet Calendar and Fleet Member List. I'll work with the list to finish updating it, since Cathy has the Membership Forms right here where I can get to them. We want to wish Jim, Signe, Kay, and Carolyn the best of luck and fortune in their new home up on Bainbridge Island in the Seattle Area. We'll see you this summer at the Nationals in Sequim. Now we have two fleet members in the area, counting the Christensens. Has anyone else got the bug to go north? Planning on going to the Boat Show at Jack London Square sometime between April 17 and 21? If you're planning on going on Sunday, the 21st and you'd like to join us for breakfast, some of us are going out to breakfast at Elio's Restaurant in San Leandro at 9:00 before going on to the show. Get off 880 at Washington Boulevard and go approximately 5 blocks down Washington eastward to the northwest corner of Washington and Halcyon Drive. They offer a great breakfast menu at very reasonable prices. Give me a call so I can get a reservation for the right number of sailors. All fleets welcome. The more the merrier. Thanks to Larry Weatherly for going the extra mile and converting over to a digital/ format for our Windjammer. It looks great with the color pictures and there's no waiting on the postman's call. However, we're going to continue to need good color photos for our new format. I'm going to propose we try to get some good digital pictures at the first races on May 5. We can use the committee boat to facilitate getting good perspectives on the boats and crews. As some of you have discovered, getting good sailboat pictures is harder than some might think. Be sure to show up with your boat and make the gallery. We'll be "shootin" for ya'! We can also use the results for a new color flyer for the club and for the FSC website. The Commodore's Checklist for shipshape membership and participation: Pay membership dues. Volunteer to help out Vern Tucker and Ian Murray with our sailing classes. (See FSC Calendar published last month for class schedule). Vern's phone: Plan on coming to the lake on Saturday, April 13, for the FSC Workday to help repaint the marks and set up the boats for the sailing classes. Chuck St. Denis's phone: 1-4, Would anyone like to take over Chuck's Port Captain's duties, now that he has another job? Joe Page 1

3 Board Meeting Minutes Fremont Sailing Club Board of Directors Meeting Tuesday, April 2, 2002 Commodore, Joe Doering, called the meeting to order at 1913 hours. Board members present: Gene Arrillaga, John Christman, Kevin Crozier, Cathy Doering, Joe Doering, Roy Jordan, Chuck St. Denis, Larry Weatherly, Hans Wolff. The minutes of the March meeting, as published in the Windjammer, were approved. Treasurer's Report: Hans discussed both the February and March budget reports. See copies in the Windjammer. Hans also announced that Helga Wolff has been trying to get information on ordering new burgees for the club, but has had no luck so far. Membership Chair's Report: We now have a total of 52 new members, with the addition of four renewals this month. See elsewhere in Windjammer. Race Captain's Report: A work day is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 to paint the buoys and fix the boats used in the sailing classes. We need volunteers since all of this effort will benefit the club. John Christman is planning on taking a look at the boats and the needs for the sailing classes before April 13 and so will have everything laid out. Please call Chuck St. Denis if you are able to help ( ); the more people who attend, the more fun it will be and the less time it will take. Thanks. The Lido fleet will have race duty the first series races of the year, May 5. El Toros will be in charge of the race committee on May 19. The FJ's will run the races, host the first invitational races of the year and fire up the barbecue on June 1. Roy Jordan has sent out invitations to the various clubs around the area and anticipates that the Sunfish will be sailing at Lake Elizabeth that day. Perhaps other boats as well. El Toro Report: See elsewhere in Windjammer. The Bullship is scheduled for Saturday, April 6. Even if you do not sail this race, it is fun to watch the boats finishing, from the St. Francis Yacht Club area. The next fleet meeting will be held at the Fuges' in Scott's Valley on April 27. FJ Report: See Windjammer. Lido Report: See elsewhere in Windjammer. Joe Doering and Chuck St. Denis have been working on a promotional flyer for the Lidos to have ready for the boat show on April Karen St. Denis has offered to have her company run-off the flyers for just the cost of the paper. This is a great opportunity for the fleet (and the club if other fleets will design and put together flyers) to save a lot of money. The Lido Fleet has been invited to a fleet party at the boat show at Jack London Square on Friday night, April 19, sponsored by the Lido builder, W.D. Schock, and the local dealer, Helms Marine. The get-together will occur right after the closing of the show that night, and all present and future Lido Fleet members are invited to attend. The FSC Lido Fleet is also planning a breakfast and a trip to the boat show on Sunday, April 21. Call Joe or Chuck for details. Commodore's Report: See elsewhere in Windjammer. Joe announced that Chuck St. Denis has graciously agreed to be fleet captain of the Lidos for the year, replacing Jim Sterner. Congratulations, Chuck. Vice Commodore's Report: Kevin has now received 16 responses to the survey about the Bailer's Ball and is now investigating the various options available to the club. The preferred choices appear to be between a dinner on a yacht or at a yacht club as far as location is concerned. Old Business: The dredging of Lake Elizabeth is scheduled to begin around the third week of April, which will mean that the entire lake will probably not be available for sailing on May 5 (and possibly May 19). After discussion, the Board decided to hold the races as scheduled with a modified, smaller race course. We have done this before, when we had the weed problems. This was decided based on the consideration that if we switched location, we would lose some boats and there is a lot of difficulty in providing everything needed by the race committee. The city is planning to begin filling the lake, as scheduled, around the first of April. Three members of the Kiwanis Club attended the meeting to announce this year's date for the Ducks for Bucks race (Saturday, April 27) and to, once again, ask for the support of the Fremont Sailing Club in collecting any escaped feathered creatures. We have done this for all of the years (8) the event has occurred and everyone who has participated agrees that this is not only a worthy cause but a fun day. The race will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Lake Elizabeth. If you can help, please call Cathy Doering ( ). Plan on getting there by 12:30 if you can. We are generally through by 2:00 p.m. We have decided to hold a photo day May 5 to get pictures for the Windjammer and the FSC Flyer we hope to put together soon. Bring your boat, your cameras, and your smiles on that day, the first day of our Spring Series. You may be immortalized. This is old news, but we are still looking for a sailing master to coordinate the sailing lessons. We have most of the worker bees lined up; we just need a "killer bee" to take charge. Please volunteer. Call any board member to offer your services. New Business: No new business this month. There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 2047 hours. The next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 1900 hours at the Fremont Main Library. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Doering, Acting Secretary Page 3

4 Lido Fleet Report As most of us know by now, fleet Captain Jim Sterner has moved to Washington, and taken his excellent crews (elves disguised as his children) with him. We ll miss you Jim, but be assured that sooner or later, daughters grow up and get married and then we ll be able to catch up with you on the water. The news is out. We were rained out at the Last Lake Merritt race. Now It s Chuck s turn to be fleet captain. After 24 years in the Reserves, I m ready, but be forewarned that my nautical hero is the famous and dynamic Commander McHale. Fleet 62 s outline for action will be the excellent master calendar that Capt. Jim assembled so well. However, a promise I ll make right from the start to all Lido skippers is that I can almost guarantee that more sailors will cross the finish line ahead of their fearless fleet captain than almost any other time in history. Rule 90 will be strictly enforced! April events include the April 13th Lake Liz Boatyard Blast, where we will assemble at the boat house and prepare and repair the yard and boats that will be used for lessons later this year. The lesson program is mighty important because it is a great source for new members. Wear old clothes, for we might do some painting. We ll meet at the boathouse at 0900 (9am). This is an open event for all members. Lido sailors have been invited to join the W. D. Schock Corporation at the Pacific Sail Expo on Friday evening April 19th, for a party. Call me for details if you did not get an invite directly from the Schock factory. On Sunday April 21st a trip to the PACIFIC SAIL EXPO is planned for Fleet 62. Members will meet for breakfast on the way, and then we ll continue on to Jack London Square to check out the show. Fleet Ne ws The cost for Sunday s admission is $13.00 (with our $2.00 discount coupons). If anyone in the club needs extra coupons, they are available at and at the West Marine stores. I ll also bring extras. Wear deck shoes. Lastly, April 27th is the great Rubber Ducky Race. Just bring your life jacket. The rangers will provide boats for collecting the ducks. Chuck ******************* From: "Sterner, James J." <James.Sterner@Honeywell.com> Subject: RE: [Fleet62] New Lido Fleet Captain Date: Tuesday, April 02, :21 PM This is great news! Good on ya, Chuck for stepping forward to support the Lido Fleet and FSC. You will do a fine job with a fine fleet. For Chuck, the Board, and all interested, my new contact information is: Jim Sterner 9771 NE Radio School Rd. Bainbridge Island, WA (H) (W) james.sterner@honeywell.com Jim ps- I am going to try and go out racing this weekend with Fleet 78, Anacortes, WA. It is about an 1.5 hour trip each way, but it's well worth it to get out on the water for some fun racing. There is some irony in the fact that I'm driving that far to race, when the water is a 5 minute walk from my front door. Oh well, what we'll do to go racing! El Toro Fleet Report It¹s April and that means a potluck/meeting on Saturday the 27th at June and Paul¹s in beautiful Scotts Valley. You may want to car pool, because it is a bit further than our usual destinations. Detailed directions from the hosts themselves at the end of this report. Thanks again to Vern and Nancy for their hospitality. We had a good dinner, a brief business meeting, a few announcements and a good time. Gene ******************* How to get here: Fortunately, it will be a full moon because you will need the extra light to read these directions from their Get yourselves on hwy 17 going south Watch for Scotts Valley city limit sign Then go downhill quite a long way Turn off Scotts Valley Dr & Granite Creek Rd exit Turn left at stop light (at Shell station) onto Scotts Valley Dr. (ignore Granite Creek) Go thru 6 or 7 stoplights on SV Dr. Turn right Bean Creek Rd. by middle school Continue past condos on both sides, shortly after Blue Bonnet St. on left, slow down and turn left at 552 Bean Creek Rd (big #s on a tree) Go very short distance into Montevalle park, weave to right and our house is #3 on Ponderosa St (one way street) P.S. We will arrange to make parking at some neighbors and 3-4 cars can park in our driveway. See you here. Any questions, call us at FJ Fleet Report June and Paul The new racing season at FSC begins next month. With all the activity that we had with the RYC Midwinters I am excited about the upcoming season and am looking forward to some great racing and a lot of fun. John Page 4

6 3DL Sails for S m all Boats from Sailing World AFTER FIVE YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT, North Sails has started producing 3DL sails for small one-design and club racers. The company says their Rotary Molded technology, or RM, will dramatically enhance production efficiencies. RM sails are made by a machine pioneered by Bill Slyne of Industrial Evolution, Inc., in Toronto. Slyne, who worked on the original 3DL molds used for bigger boats, is credited with developing the intricate rotating cylinder capable of producing a one-piece sail in approximately 10 minutes. While North is still in the early stages of manufacturing its first generation RM sails, the company says the technology will provide them significant cost savings over their traditional paneled sail making process. Using the RM machine, they'll essentially be able to mass-produce sails with foot lengths up to 14.5 feet. "The first sails will cost us several million dollars to cover the expense of development," says Jay Hansen, vice president of North Sails. "But we fully expect to be competitive with pricing, as production ramps up:" When making an individual sail, a computer controls complex hydraulics within the cylinder, and the rotating drum's surface is manipulated to precisely match a three-dimensional sail design. Shapes can be repeated with fine tolerances, which North believes will be important to one design classes that currently allow only paneled sails. In the first stage of manufacturing, Mylar film is fed into the machine. Strands of glue-infused aramid fibers are laid on the film in continuous thread patterns as the drum rotates. After the tensioned fibers are placed on the film in predicted load paths, another layer of Mylar seals them in place. The laminate is then vacuumbonded and heat cured before being removed to be trimmed and finished. 800-SAIL123, ext Politics Explained DEMOCRAT: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. You feel guilty for being successful. You vote people into office that put a tax on your cows, forcing you to sell one to raise money to pay the tax. The people you voted for then take the tax money, buy a cow and give it to your neighbor. You feel righteous. SOCIALIST: You have two cows. The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor. You form a cooperative to tell him how to manage his cow. REPUBLICAN: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. So? COMMUNIST: You have two cows. The government seizes both and provides you with milk. You wait in line for hours to get it. It is expensive and sour. CAPITALISM, AMERICAN STYLE: You have two cows. You sell one, take that money, along with additional cash, from venture capitalists, buy a bull (bulls cost more than cows) and build a herd of cows. Analysts forecast that you will be able to produce 500 new cows per year from the breeding pair and issue a strong buy. Your stock goes up 4,000% in two months before the first calf is even born. DEMOCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE: You have two cows. The government taxes you to the point you have to sell both to support a man in a foreign country who has only one cow, which was a gift from your government. BUREAUCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE: You have two cows. The government takes them both, shoots one, milks the other, pays you for the milk, and then pours the milk down the drain. AMERICAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You sell one, lease it back to yourself and do an IPO on the second one. You force the 2 cows to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised when one cow drops dead. You spin an announcement to the analysts stating you have downsized and are reducing expenses. Your stock goes up. FRENCH CORPORATION: You have two cows. You go on strike because you want three cows. You go to lunch and drink wine. Life is good. ITALIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows but you don't know where they are. While ambling around, you see a beautiful woman. You break for lunch. Life is good. RUSSIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You count them and learn you have five cows. You have some more vodka. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka. You produce your tenth, 5-year plan in the last 3 months. The Mafia shows up and takes over whatever many cows you really have. POLISH CORPORATION: You have two bulls. Employees are regularly maimed and killed attempting to milk them. NEW YORK CORPORATION: You have fifteen million cows. You have to choose which one will be the leader of the herd, so you pick some fat cow from Arkansas. TRADITIONALISM: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows. You sell them and retire on the income. ENNRON CAPITALISM. You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by your brother in law at the bank, then execute a debt equity swap with an associate general offer so that you get all your four cows back, with a tax exemption for a fifth cow. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred through an intermediary to a Cayman Island company secretly owned by the majority stockholder who sells the right to all seven cows back to your listed company. The Ennron annual report says the company owns eight cows with an option on one more. Page 6
