1 Issue No. 424 Fremont Sailing Club, P.O. Box 793 Fremont, CA April, 2004 Lake Elizabeth Is Ready For Sailing! Lake Elizabeth Recreation Supervisor Phil Hagmann said on March 25 that the Lake will be filled to summer levels beginning April 2. How about sailing Lidos, FJs and similar deep water craft. About two weeks later. If this info is wrong, don t blame Phil, he s the only one left in the boat house. Submitted by Doug Hamilton, Historian March Madness at the Lake! March 20th general meeting began with food of course. After a short meeting, Roy Jordan and Tom Federico conducted a demonstration of the sailing start sequence. More photos on page 7 Page 1

Dear Dinghy Captain, How does a mainsail work? J.J. Dear J.J, An Intuitive question. A mainsail serves two purposes. It provides lift when sailing to windward and it provides drag when sailing off the wind. The main lifts like a kite as you beat windward. The air passes over the sail to create areas of differing pressure: higher pressure on the windward side (the side you see) and lower on the leeward side (the front side or the side you don t see). The lift is transferred to the hull and the boat moves forward. The speed of the boat is determined by the proper shape of the sail along with the velocity of the wind and water conditions. The boat is pulled forward when sailing to windward. Downwind, the wind pushes the boat. There you have it. More another time. Captain Dinghy Respectfully submitted, Hans Wolff Dinghy Captain s Question Corner Page 2

3 Fremont Sailing Club Board Meeting Minutes Tuesday April 6, 2004 Board Members Present: Greg Morrill, Kathleen Turner, Roy Jordon, Vern Tucker and our Port Capitan Sidney Lee. Commodore Morrill called the meeting to order at 1905 hours. The minutes of the March meeting, were approved as printed in the Windjammer. Editors Report: Kathleen again announced she would like all articles for the Windjammer be ed to her no later than the Friday after the board meetings. This will usually be the first Friday of each month. Race Captain s Report: Roy tossed out ideas of how to score or compensate the instructor for the novice sailor in our series. Suggested that maybe could score them in the same manner as we score those who serve on the RC. Others suggested may be a discount at the Bailers Ball or maybe a discount on club membership. There not being a quorum nothing was decided. Vice Commodore s Report: Chuck announced the Ducks for Bucks on April24th. Chuck indicated he would take his lead sled aka Lido and set it up on the lawn, along with information about the FSC. Chuck is also negotiating with Mariani s on how much of a deposit we need to give them for the Bailers Ball. El Toro Report: We now have four entries for the Fremont Relays. Keep those entries coming in! For other El Toro news see elsewhere in the Windjammer. Lido Report: See elsewhere in the Windjammer for additional Lido news. F J Report:? Not present. Commodore s Report: Greg showed up with an A Frame billboard advertising the sailing classes. This will be outside the boat house every day the lake is staffed. Gives name and phone number of contact people. Although Greg did not mention it, he would like help with the Flight of the Bulls to be held on Saturday May 8th. This is the day before Mother s day. It is an El Toro event and will be held at Foster City. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 2000 hours. The next Board meeting will be held at the Fremont Main Library on Tuesday May 4, 1900 hours. Respectfully submitted, Vern Tucker, Secretary Page 3

5 Fleet News El Toro Fleet Report If you missed the FSC General Meeting Pot Luck last month you missed a fun time. We had a good turnout, good food, a free raffle with gifts, and an overall nice evening with our friends in the Sailing Club. If you want another event of this kind later in the year, let your voice be heard at our Fleet meetings. There are two items that need to be addressed. The first is the need for Race Committee members. Our Fleet has the Race Committee duty on May 2nd, opening day on Lake Liz, August 15th and October 3rd. So far only Kathy Federico has volunteered to work the finish line on May 2nd and Pete Blasberg has signed up for October 3rd. We also have to do the BBQ on August 15th and I know the entire Fleet will pitch in to help out with that. Please give me a call or me with the dates that you will be able to serve on the Race Committee. The second item is the Fremont Relays. Our El Toro Fleet should enter at least 6 all Fremont teams. So far only Morre Oberg and yours truly have entered from Fremont. I plan to have a Fremont Teams award at our June Fleet meeting for all of the all Fremont teams that enter the Regatta. Let s support this Fremont sponsored Regatta and get our boats out. Our April Fleet meeting will be at the home of June and Paul Fuge in Scotts Valley. Pete will get the word out, I hope to see you there. Submitted by Tom Federico Lido Fleet Several skippers have taken advantage of the early sailing season this year. The Lido 14 s sailed around the local waters at Lake Merritt, Shoreline, and Redwood City. Congratulations are in order for Morie Oberg who sailed a great second race at Lake Merritt. The winds were very light and Morie s crew consisted of Sandy, his wife, and Heidi, his daughter. Twice the input, sounds like a good idea to me. I would like to add a new fleet to the Lidos, at our local lake, an S fleet. That would give us two Lido fleets consisting of the A fleet (minimum number of persons racing show be two (2) and the S fleet (single-handed, no crew.) The purpose of this suggestion is to encourage people to come out to the lake and sail. Trophies will be awarded in each qualifying fleet for each series of races, provided three (3) or more boats start in at least 60% of the races in a series. If an A fleet skipper wants to be eligible to sail Class Association events, you must be a member of the Lido 14 class Association and conform to rules and regulations. If you have any questions regarding the Class Association, please give me a call. The March general meeting at the Community Center was a big hit. The variety of food gave us a new reason to go on a diet. There was a short general meeting, and a demo starting sequence using people as boats. You should have seen the crazy skippers running around, you would have thought that they were completing for a trophy. There were many prizes given out for the raffle. Awards were given out for the Shoreline Winter Series. If you missed this meeting, you are going to have to wait sometime this year for another. I believe everyone would like to have us put another General Meeting and Pot Luck on this year. Joe Davis was busy the next day, Sunday, with the Lido workday at his home. 1) The A-frame now has an electric wench to lift the Lidos. 2) Morie worked on his boat, buffing out the top deck. 3) Jim worked on the bottom of his boat, sanding and buffing. 4) They started building Mast Carriers/Light bars to be completed next time. If this is any indication of things to come, this is going to be a busy year. Submitted by Jack Navarra Page 5
