1 BLACKBEARD SAILING CLUB UPPER BROAD CREEK ON THE NEUSE PO BOX 1543, NEW BERN, NC March 2009 Volume 37, Number 3 News Deadline 11 th Each Month ALL THE NEWS THAT S IN THE WINDS (252) COMMODORE Lu-Ann Perryman \ VICE-COMMODORE Dave Whitney PAST COMMODORE Ken Gurganus SECRETARY Jan Green TREASURER Pete Koonce DIRECTORS Arnold Giles Ken Laws Doug Longhini Archer Watkins Tom Wynn DOCKMASTER Pete Moore DINGHY & DRY STORAGE Ted Clark (Dry Storage) Jon Petersen (Woods) John Stokes (Dinghies) EDITORS Bill Green George Myers bscepitaph@yahoo.com From the Commodore As a huge dog lover, I know that managing our four-legged babies is very important when we are around other people. All pets dogs, cats or any animal you bring to BSC must be on a leash and under your control at all times. Recently a dog that has never bitten anyone before, was tied on the dock in front of the owner s boat and when a member walked by, the dog became territorial. The member was lucky in this instance, but this should never have happened. Please remember the under your control at all times part no tying them on the dock or anywhere else for that matter. Unfortunately, most dogs, even those that have never bitten anyone before, will bite given the right circumstances. Another big social is under our belt. BSC member, Les Pendleton, gave a humorous presentation on his journey to writing. Thanks for sharing Les everyone had a great time! Les is just one of our many members that have a story to tell. Watch the Epitaph for the Member Spotlight and learn about your fellow members. Spring Workday looked liked it was going to be a washout but the rain held off enough so that more than 160 members and guests came out and worked like mad to complete our long list of jobs. Thanks to everyone for a great workday! Special kudos to the Grill Team, Terry Hanchey, Larry Basden, George Hall and Bill Braun, for a wonderful meal! I have to thank the heavens above for Edith Harper and her desserts, especially her homemade banana pudding my favorite! If you notice that you can receive a stronger wireless signal while sitting on your boat, thank Jon Petersen and Doug Laurie. They installed a technical thingy on A Dock that makes the signal stronger. I don t know what it is, but I can now surf the internet while on board! Jon and Doug you are now the official BSC Geek Squad! Don t forget that you can be a BSC fashionista by purchasing and wearing BSC apparel. Sally Johnson and Judy Armes are ready to take your order. There has been a lot of trash talk from C dock recently. Which dock has the coolest sailors? Boats? Water hoses? You name it, they are trash talking it! Being that the Pirate Queen s magnificent royal vessel is on A Dock, I have taken this personally. So, your PQ is challenging C Dock to a duel. B Dock feel free to join A Dock in showing that other dock how it s done. Details will be forthcoming soon but C is 3 rd in the alphabet for a reason... Blackbeard s committees need your help. Our committees make recommendations to the Board of Directors and these committees need you to participate! Help lead BSC join a committee. Upcoming Dates April 3, :30 pm Board Meeting April 4, :00 pm Social 6:00 pm Covered Dish Lu-Ann C. Perryman Life's pretty good, and why wouldn't it be? I'm a pirate, after all. Dateline Sunday, March 8 th, 6:30 pm Blackbeard Sailing Club by a very humble Arnold Giles. Tonight we came within five minutes of losing our picnic shelter to fire. Had it not been for the heroic actions of Don Huff and a newly charged fire extinguisher, the shelter would now be ashes. How did this happen? I, Arnold Giles, wanted to grill a steak. The new grill was a mess; it had been used for the Saturday social and left as is. Still, I lit it, left it to warm up and went to fetch my food. As I came back from the clubhouse, I saw Don running down B Dock. And I then saw the flames reaching almost to the rafters. The heat was so intense I could not turn off the grill, so Don used the extinguisher to kill the flames. When we opened the lid, the intense heat caused another flash but again the extinguisher put the flames down. If the flames had reached the old nylon spinnaker rolled up in the rafters, I doubt if we could have controlled it. Kudos? Lessons? Thank-you Archer Watkins for making sure the extinguisher was in good condition. Thank-you Don Huff for knowing how and having the courage to use the extinguisher. If you use the grill, clean out the fat after using it. Don't leave the grill unattended ever. Don't light a dirty or greasy grill. Should grills be under the shelter? Should sails be stored over the grills? April is WASH YOUR DOCK BOX month! Don t be the dirtiest dock box on your row

2 March 2009 Page 2 BSC Board Notes Important Issues & News from the BSC Board of Directors By Lu-Ann Perryman Quartermaster Jimmy Sellers is now responsible for the inventory and procurement of essential items. He will search out the best price and purchase in bulk as storage space allows. Dock Policy After much discussion, the Board adopted revisions to the dock policy. Item 4 - Maximum Boat Size Allowed, identifies the maximum weight and length allowed for a wet slip at BSC. Item 5 Dock Lines and Cleats, was revised and will make it easier to be safely tied and in compliance with the policy. The Slip Assignment/Reassignment form and the Slip Agreement were updated to conform to the revised dock policy. You can find the revised documents on the BSC website. Rules & Regulations The Board reviewed our Rules and Regulations and saw that they were out of date. Many changes had occurred through the years, and the R&R needed to conform to those changes. You can find the revised documents on the BSC website. Date for April Board Meeting The date for the April Board meeting is Friday April 3, All Board meetings are held at the BSC Clubhouse and are scheduled for the 1 st Friday of the month unless there is a conflict and start at 7:30 pm. 3 March 2009 Page 3 Member Spotlight With last month s Epitaph, we introduced our new Spotlight feature which is designed to help us get to know each other and to strengthen the Blackbeard community. This month, our Spotlight shines on Dan Bornarth and family sailors extraordinaire. Dan Bornarth has been racing around the world literally! He has raced from east to west across the United States, from Canada in the north to Miami in the South and that s just this continent. Dan has also raced in Italy, Monaco, Bermuda, France, Holland, New Zealand, Wales and England. His racing career highlights include winning Antigua Race Week on Roy Disney s Pyewacket and having a beer with the King of Spain in Majorca! Check out the photos below for a glimpse into Dan s sailing life. It s no wonder that Dan and Holly met over a sailboat while both were working at the Offshore Sailing School in Captiva, Florida in Since their marriage in 1994, three new sailors have come on board. Katie, age 10, has been crewing on San Juan 21s including the 2009 Fred Latham Regatta and on Brown Eyed Girl in the winter series. Trevor, age 8, also participated in the winter series on Brown Eyed Girl and is an experienced sewer man, pulling down the spinnaker during douses on the heavy air day. Emily at 6 years of age, will be following her older siblings this summer. In the meantime, she s perfecting her rowing technique. In addition to teaching his own junior sailors, Dan is interested in working with other kids at BSC and hopes this will lead to a full-fledged junior sail program. In addition to teaching at the Offshore Sailing School, Dan has also taught at North Sail Universities and at a local sailing club on Lake Ontario. Dan is also working on a set of seminars leading up to the San Juan 21 North American event. Although tailored to the San Juan 21, these seminars will be open to anyone interested in yacht racing. Dan is truly a 24/7 sailor. In addition to racing in his spare time, Dan has worked as a sail maker and rigger at North Sails in Virginia and Florida. After North Sails, Dan spent ten years with Derecktor Shipyards in Florida as a project manager on grand prix race boats, Volvo ocean race boats and maxi boats. His stint at Derecktor also included repair and refit of mega yachts, both sail and power, up to 200 ft in length. Currently, Dan is a Construction Manager with Hatteras Yachts, working closely with clients during construction of their new yachts. According to Dan, he has been given incredible opportunities to travel, represent the USA and meet some interesting characters. When he first volunteered to crew at Blackbeard s and was asked what he could do, he answered make sandwiches. Regardless, Dan has been crewing with Brown Eyed Girl since then and having a great time. His next big adventure will be crewing for his kids in a couple of years Newport to Bermuda - 2nd in Class Frers 66 Kodiak 1996 Key West Race Week - 1st place in Sport Boat Class B Tripp 33 Risky Business Please take a moment to say hello to Dan, Holly, Katie, Trevor and Emily the next time you see them at BSC. And if you know of a club member that would make a good subject for the next Spotlight, please drop the editors a note at bscepitaph@yahoo.com.

4 March 2009 Page 4 Race News NYRA Commodore s Ball Regatta Spring may not arrive until March 21, but winter was officially over February 21. The NYRA Commodore s Ball Regatta marked the end of the winter racing season, and no races are on the calendar until April. Light and variable winds forced a 30-minute delay in the start, but the wind finally settled in around five knots and the non-spinnaker fleet started with all five boats very much on the line a very competitive start. All boats stayed on starboard tack almost to the long lay line before tacking for the mark. The spinnaker start was almost as well organized, but four of the six starters tacked early to port and into lighter air. Echo and Compass Rose continued out on starboard and gained in the better wind, crossing the in-shore boats on the way to #17. The non-spinnakers were on a broad reach to a gybe mark and ran almost parallel to the chutes. In the still-light air, Afterthought and EZ sailed pretty hot gybe angles to get boat speed, but it availed them nothing as there did not appear to be any place changes on the run. The course was shortened to prevent going over the time limit. Non-spins finished at the leeward mark, and spinnakers at a windward finish line. The final beat to the finish turned into a close reach in building air for the spinnaker fleet, with Compass Rose taking first corrected, followed by Echo and Brown Eyed Girl. In non-spin, Lawrence Miller s Sails Call corrected to first, followed by Dave Whitney s Silent Pursuit and Aquilla. After resetting to course again twice to accommodate major wind shifts, both fleets ran a shorter windward-leeward course in six to ten knots. The highlight for us was getting into a tacking duel with Charlie Nelson s Water Phantom, which didn t help either one of us in the end. Charlie tried a gybe set on the spinnaker at the windward mark and got a classic hourglass. Compass Rose passed them as they were tidying up and worked down through the nonspinnaker fleet, but well behind the leaders. Water Phantom caught up back to the windward finish and crossed four seconds ahead of us. It was fun racing by Mark Brennesholtz Compass Rose (41958) leads Water Phantom to the leeward mark in the NYRA Commodore's Ball Regatta in February. A pretty day with light air gave sailors a treat for the last race of the winter. Compass Rose was named spinnaker Boat of the Year by NYRA (photo Furna) boat for boat, but we were battling for fifth and sixth, not for silver. Silent Pursuit beat Sails Call in the race, and on the tie breaker, Dave won the regatta for his class. Echo, Afterthought and Brown Eyed Girl took the first three places, correcting about half a minute apart each. For the regatta in spinnaker, Echo took first and Compass Rose took second on the tie-breaker over BEG. Mark Commodore s Ball Well Attended At the NYRA Commodore s Ball, awards for the regatta and the year were presented. Compass Rose was NYRA Boat of the Year in spinnaker class, and Chuck Thompson in SJ21 Packer Tacker was BOTY in the non-spinnaker. These awards are based on the results of eight events throughout the past twelve months, ending with the Commodore s Ball Regatta. Afterthought was the winner of the Spin A Winter Series trophy, Compass Rose took Spin B, and Silent Pursuit won non-spin. Kim Harrison was named Crew of the Year, and Bill Jarvis was awarded Sportsman of the Year. Please congratulate all the winners when you see them on the dock. March, April & May Events March no races scheduled. Time to do spring cleaning, crop planting, and bottom painting. Don t forget Bill Jarvis s Racing Rules seminar on March 21 at BSC. The $10 entry fee includes a pizza lunch. April 4 & 5 is the NYRA Invitational. This is a PHRF regatta, including SJ 21s and Catalina 22s. Last year this event was hosted by Bridgeton Harbor Marina but this year s venue is undecided. Contact Vince Doc Palancia at or vpalancia@ec.rr.com. April 25 & 26 is the Tiller Academy Benefit regatta in the turning basin in the Morehead City Port. A crowd with PA announcers is expected to explain and comment on the racing. With the expected currents and short legs, this could be arena racing at its best. Contact Paul Lockwood at or omarsail@embarqmail.com. May 2 & 3 is the ECB Cup at Blackbeard. This is an Inter-Club Racing Committee team regatta, which means that five-boat (or more) teams from each area club will compete in many classes for club supremacy in addition to individual boat honors. Mark Brennesholtz will be contacting racers in a few weeks to begin putting together Blackbeard s team. Contact Mike Bonner at or msbonner@suddenlink.net. May 22 & 23 is the North Carolina Offshore Championship in the ocean off Beaufort. This race attracts boats from Bald Head Island, Wilmington, and Wrightsville Beach. Shore activities will likely be at the NC Maritime Museum s Gallants Channel Annex with free dockage for participants. Contact Doc Palancia.

5 March 2009 Page 5 The 37 th annual Fred Latham New Years Day Regatta For the last 37 years, our own Fred Latham s San Juan 21 has hit the water for a sail on New Year s Day. Although Fred wasn t able to take Mad Mama out himself this year, Mike Harrison and a couple of guests did the honors and continued the tradition by taking her out once again for her New Year s Day sail across the creek, while Fred coached from the clubhouse deck. This year, eleven San Juan 21 s and three cruising boats came out on a cold New Year s Day to start the year off on the water at Blackbeard for this annual fun Regatta. With temperatures in the 20 s on New Year s Eve, it wasn t going to be a warm day at best, but with the bright sun and light, shifting winds in the creek, this fun Regatta proved to be one of the better ones with everyone having a big time. After a hotdog lunch cooked up by the team of Mike Harrison and Mike Bonner, during which 104 hotdogs with all the trimmings were consumed in the clubhouse, the fleet hit the water at about 1:00 PM. Temperatures were warming up a little but never got above the 40-degree range. But, with light winds, the day turned out just fine. The first race settled down in light air with the usual suspects taking the top spots. But the second race proved the most challenging with some major wind shifts. Just as the starting horn was going off, the wind shifted suddenly 90 degrees pushing the entire fleet to tack in unison to port. Looked like a ballet performance right on queue. After a mostly windward beat up to the first mark, the wind once by Ken Gurganus Working Sails Skipper Number Race 1 Race 2 Points Finish Ed Doughty Doug Longhini Alexander M. Schaefer Mike Bonner Tim Poole Hans Lassen Pete Koonce Eddy Parker Spinnaker Skipper Number Race 1 Race 2 Points Finish Mike Evans Jeff Thomas again swirled around a full 180 degrees making the next two legs also a beat to windward. Then, with the fleet at the leeward mark, the wind pivoted once again 90 degrees, forcing a reach back to the finish line. All this changing wind provided some challenging conditions and favored the boats that could stay in time with the shifts. To say this mixed up the fleet, would be an understatement, but everyone got the same shifts, so it was up to each skipper s choices and tactics that made the race. But what a great finish as Special Ed and crew boy Ted forged out in front to take this race with a solid lead over 2 nd place Tim Poole and Tim Jr. and Malcolm Schaefer following close behind for 3 rd Then it was back to the docks to pull out and award trophies. Fred was awarded a plaque marking the 37 th New Years sail by Mad Mama. The winners were then awarded their position trophies. Last but not least, the Stern Award was presented to the skipper who had observed the most sterns for the day. Skippering Eddy Parker s boat, the Stern Award goes to Tinka Talbert! See inset for full race scoring. Bride of Blackbeard Ain t she lovely? 2009 Membership Directory Blackbeard has a new Membership Directory, a/k/a the Pirate s Log. As of the March 14th workday, there were still a number of copies in the clubhouse, waiting for members to claim them. Please remember to stop by the clubhouse to get yours. Once again, the editors would like to express our thanks to Christian Guldager, a Danish artist, for his kind permission to use the wonderful image of Blackbeard featured on the cover of this years Pirate s Log. Please check out Christian s work on his website at
