BLACKBEARD SAILING CLUB Upper Broad Creek On The Neuse PO Box 24, Bridgeton, NC Volume 40, Number 5 ALL THE NEWS THAT S IN THE WINDS (252) COMMODORE Dave Whitney VICE-COMMODORE Bill Braun SECRETARY Jan Green TREASURER Ken Gurganus DIRECTORS Ed Doughty Bill Green Bill Talbert Nick Karasek Archer Watkins Pete Thorn DOCKMASTER Bill Drechsler DINGHY & DRY STORAGE Ted Clark EDITORS Judy Hills George Myers bscepitaph@yahoo.com From the Commodore The first BSC race of the season went off in fine style, with 25 boats on the start line. Race Coordinator Pete Thorn and PRO Joy Evans put together a good weekend of racing for all. There still is some controversy about the results of the Interclub competition, but that is being resolved. There are really only two clubs who are fielding teams for the ICRC races, BSC and the Oriental Dinghy Club. Both clubs want the competition to continue, so a consensus will be easily reached. That does not take away from the awesome competition that took place. The next race weekend is June 2-3, the First Citizens Cup. The Saturday race will start near Minnesott Beach and end in front of our clubhouse. After the race, there will be a DECKPARTY, with DJ s Scott and Donna Wade in charge. This is the first time we have had a deck party and we hope a lot of members will come, whether they race or not. There will also be a catered dinner downstairs. Plan to come out and enjoy what we hope will be an annual event. Contact Pete Thorn or check the website for information on obtaining dinner tickets. Come out and enjoy the ambience! The work to get our antiquated sewer system replaced is continuing with the bid process underway. Doug Longhini has taken the lead on this project from the beginning and is doing a great job. We expect work will begin soon after Labor Day. We expect some minor interruption of services, but will let you know well before they occur. Those of you who live in Fairfield Harbor are aware that the results of the survey on incorporation have been published. Based on the results, the process has been shelved. Since the committee included BSC in their incorporation plans, we were vehemently opposed. The results would have cost the club and each member money for taxes for which we would have gained nothing. We are scheduling an anchoring seminar for the morning of June 16. This is aimed to help new members, as well as providing information to others. There will be a panel of members to review what their plans are and to provide advice. We will also provide help for members who have not completed their Hurricane Plan. In addition, we will be bringing in new members on that date. Ken Caviston hopes to have at least 10 new member families ready for that date. Even if we meet that goal, we will still be short of our 200 member family goal. If you know of anyone who has an interest, please take the time to acquaint them with our club. If you can sponsor a new family, we will work with you to find a second sponsor. Survival of BSC is not an issue. We will continue to thrive, as long as there is an interest in sailing. However, we need full membership and full slips, to provide money to continue to improve and maintain our facilities. The outside and inside of our clubhouse is starting to look pretty shabby. There is no money to spend this year on beautification, and next year will be sparse as well, unless we can fill up our membership roster and our slips. (continued p. 2) Dave Whitney

Page 2 (continued from p. 1) On a positive note, the Cinco de Mayo Race, sponsored by NYRA, raised $500 for the ETYSA program. This was a great effort of their part, to promote sailing in the New Bern area. The races were held just off Union Point Park, on a great day for sailing. Included were kids sailing their Opti s out there with all of the rest. Thanks, NYRA! The construction you see going on near the bathhouse is a new shed which will house all of the ETYSA equipment. Come out on Saturday, and watch them sail. And you might want to actually go sailing yourself. Spring won t last forever.. QUOTES ON SAILING A sailing ship is no democracy; you don't caucus a crew as to where you'll go anymore than you inquire when they'd like to shorten sail. Sterling Hayden Design has taken the place of what sailing used to be. Dennis Conner Blackbeard Team 15 Strong at ECB Cup Mark Brennesholtz A large bunch of BSC sailors, including three first-time Cruisers and four San Juan 21 s were challenged by seven boats from ODC. In light air both days, the San Juans dominated the combined Spinnaker fleet and the combined Jib and Main fleet in four races. Branin Thorn in No Quarter took first in spinnaker over Jeff Thomas in Duct Tape. ODC took the next three places. In JAM, Hans Lassen aced all four races to finish first in Roadrunner. Charlie Nelson was second in Water Phantom. Dave Ritter and Drew McCrocklin were fourth in Team Elite. The Cruising class had four Blackbeard boats, led by Billy Starr in Patience with a second, newcomer Charlie Batchelor single-handing Time Out was third, followed by Bill Siegendorf in Tern and Mike Kirkman in Sweet Surrender. Bill and Mike were racing both their boats for the first time. Great turnout. Due to some miscommunication, the classes were combined in a way that made splitting out ICRC Team scores difficult. However, Team Blackbeard still won the flags for having the best five finishers. Actually there were six: Branin Thorn, Jeff Thomas, Hans Lassen, Charlie Nelson, Dave Ritter, and Billy Starr. Congratulations all. The final tally gave BSC 8 points and ODC 11. Congratulations also to Team Captain Arch Altman and Team Workhorse Pete Thorn for getting a great turnout. The Dragon s Breath in early August will be the bookend on the ICRC 2012 series for bragging rights on the Neuse. With our slim lead going to Oriental, we need another strong turnout to clinch our first win for the whole year. Put August 4 th and 5 th on your calendars now! I keep sailing on in this middle passage. I am sailing into the wind and the dark. But I am doing my best to keep my boat steady and my sails full. Arthur Ashe It is not the ship so much as the skillful sailing that assures the prosperous voyage. George William Curtis A ship is always referred to as "she" because it costs so much to keep her in paint and powder. Adm. Chester Nimitz Tinka Talbert and Clare Lynn Brock raced SJ Squirrels on the Highway, sometimes with Cora, but Cora deserted them to race aboard Dave Furna's Viper White Snake on Sunday (Zahradka photo).

Page 3 BSC Dog Committee Report by Larry Sorenson A trained dog is a happy dog. Why? 1. A trained dog knows what is expected of their behavior. 2. You know what your dog is capable of doing. 3. The quality time spent together training builds and enhances the canine /human bond. The quality of life for both you and your dog will be enhanced. Combined spinnaker start at the ECB Cup in some of the better wind we saw over the weekend. Ten boats hit the line within seconds (Zahradka photo) Connection to Fairfield Harbour Wastewater System By: Doug Longhini The Board of Directors has authorized the bidding of the project to connect Blackbeard Facilities to the Fairfield Harbour Wastewater system operated by Utilities Incorporated. Over the past three years we have: Obtained all necessary easements (Fairfield POA, Wyndham Properties) Surveyed the project area ( Mayo and Associates) Contracted engineering specifications/ drawings (C.T. Clayton Engineering) Negotiated wastewater capacity at the plant (Utilities Inc.) Applied for and obtained the Wastewater Permit from the State of NC Budgeted for and set aside funding in the Capital Facilities Budget The project consists of replacing our existing pump tank and septic tank/ field with a new central gravity collection tank and pump station. This will pump all of our wastewater to a manhole located on Barkentine Drive where it will be transported through existing sewer lines to the treatment plant. We have sent bid packages to a number of local construction Companies that specialize in this type of work. We intend to open bids on June 13, 2012 and attempt to negotiate a contract with the most responsive bidder. The construction will begin just after Labor Day and be completed as soon as possible after that date. There will be some inconvenience for Club Members during construction particularly when we disconnect from our septic system and connect to the Fairfield System. We will give you more detailed information in future reports. There is a full set of specifications and drawings for the project located in the clubhouse for review by the members. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact Doug Longhini at ncsailor47@yahoo.com or call Blackbeard s tip to responsible dog owners: The latest information for BSC pet owners is on a clipboard just across from the Commodore s office. If you are a new BSC member or not sure of the Pet Rules this is the place to get the information. NOTICE TO ALL WET SLIP HOLDERS A big Thank You to most of the members who have submitted the required information by May 1st that was spelled out in the newly revised Dock Policy. However, some information is either lacking or incomplete for a small number of wet slip holders. Those lacking the required information will be identified by a 3" X 4" bright yellow card attached to your shore power box which details any items that still need to be submitted to the Dockmaster. Please check to verify that all of your information has been submitted. The Dockmaster wants to go sailing this summer and not spend time chasing down forgetful members. Bill Drechsler, BSC Dockmaster

Page 4 Making Sense (and Cents) of Dinghies! By Bill Green Hurricane Irene left us with dinghies and tenders scattered everywhere. During the cleanup, without reliable records to tell us who owns which boat and in which rack it belongs, we put many in any empty slot. On workday we made our first serious attempt at making sense of this mess. Thanks to the help of a few volunteers and many cooperative Members, we now know who owns more than half of these dinks and we have assigned racks to them. But much remains to be done. We still have not identified the owners of many dinghies that are on Club property. If you have a dinghy at the Club that was not identified on workday, please contact Ted Clark at to get a rack properly assigned to you. It is critical that you do this before the end of May. Despite our efforts, we expect that there will be some small boats that cannot be identified and that, in effect, have been abandoned at the Club. Here is our plan to deal with them. Work to identify the owners of dinghies will continue for several months. To facilitate this effort, we will publish a notice in the Epitaph for the months of March through October, outlining our plans for unidentified dinghies. Beginning in June, we will move unidentified dinghies into the woods where they will continue to be available for their owners to identify and request a rack. On fall workday, October 20 th, 2012, any remaining boats will be considered to have been abandoned and will be sold at auction. The proceeds to be donated to ETYSA. Unsold boats will be disposed of. So there you have it. Let s make sense and cents of the dinghies at Blackbeard Sailing Club. WE NEED YOUR STORIES The editors of the Epitaph think that this newsletter could be a better read. Every month we get the necessary stuff about maintenance issues, what to do in a hurricane, what to do with your dog, what to do with your dinghy, pleas to be good club citizens, etc. There is also there are regular articles and photos about racing and the Junior Sailing Program, but we need more content that motivates us to actually read this paper. That is where you can help. If you have a story that has been entertaining people under the club house or on Facebook, why not share it with everyone? It can be a small victory over the steady deterioration of your old boat, a great cruise you took, some spectacular race you participated in or observed, whatever might amuse your fellow BSC ers. Write it up exactly like you would tell someone, attach a photo, and send it to bscepitah@yahoo.com. We can t promise to publish everything we get, but you will be surprised by just how much we do print. A good example is the article submitted by Eddy Parker which starts on page 6 of this edition. We ll try this for a few months and if it doesn t work, we will see if we can recruit someone to revive Eleanor Lockhart s Scuttlebutt Column. Watch out Gurganus! While the above dinghy is not one on the BSC property there are some derelicts out in the woods that come close. Photo by Judy Hills

St. Pete National Offshore One Design Regatta by Doug Longhini Blackbeard members Kanga (Doug Longhini, crew John Pitcavage) and Joyride (Mike Evans, crew Mark Weinhimer) in San Juan 21 s traveled in mid February to St. Petersburg, Florida to compete in the Sperry Topsider NOOD Regatta. They were part of a 15-boat fleet in a 114 boat one-design regatta. Winds went from 0 with strong tides to 30 knots with 5-foot waves. Great race and fantastic facilities. Kanga finished 2 nd in working sails and Joyride 2 nd in spinnaker. The photo taken by Photoboat shows Kanga in 20-knot winds going to weather after an 8 knot down wind surfing leg. The second photo also by Photoboat was the Sailing World Magazine cover of the day showing Joyride just ahead of Kanga heading to a 2-3 finish in heavy air. Page 5 ZEN AND THE ART OF SAILBOAT MAINTENANCE This article appears on the Sail- Net website. What is contained here are some pithy observations from the author Don Casey: The psyche is a strange thing. It is often easier to have unfounded confidence in someone else than to have justifiable confidence in yourself. If you wish you could do more of the work on your own boat yourself, the fear of screwing up is nearly always a poor reason to decide against it. Most boat projects require more attitude than aptitude. Fear of paint the boat yourself? No boat ever sank because of brush strokes in the paint or bubbles in the varnish. The knowledge that, in the worst case, you can effect repairs for a few bucks takes a great deal of the stress out of handling an unwieldy sailboat in close quarters. If you want to do your own work, or if your financial situation is such that you need to do the work yourself, but you are paralyzed by apprehension, give yourself a break. In most cases the worst that can happen is that the result falls short of your expectations, but with every attempt you expand your capacity. And you just might discover that the greatest reward is in the doing. Click here to access full article.

Page 6 Cruising to a race Delivering our boat to Charleston for Charleston Race Week. Article and Photos By Eddy Parker Brown Eyed Girl anchored out at Cape Lookout, NC. I t was a dark and stormy night, no, really. We were supposed to leave for Charleston, SC from New Bern, NC the next morning and strong thunderstorms were buffeting the boat. We bought our Beneteau First 36.7 Brown Eyed Girl new in 2004, but last summer a boat broke free during hurricane Irene and destroyed our boat. We just recently completed the commissioning of our new 36.7 with the same name. The maiden voyage on the original BEG was from Charleston South Carolina where we picked her up to our home port of New Bern, NC. Ironically, the maiden voyage of our new boat was a delivery of our boat from New Bern to Charleston. Luckily the storms had cleared out by the time we left the marina at first light and my wife, daughter and I had a pleasant sail to Adams Creek in NE winds that built to 18 knots by the time we were got to the waterway. After transiting the ICW, we went out Beaufort Inlet and headed out to Cape Lookout, a protected deep water anchorage on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The good thing about cruising this time of year, you usually have the anchorage to yourself, and Sunday was no exception. There was one other cruiser in the bight from Rhode Island, and otherwise it was deserted. After a pleasant day of playing on the beach with temperatures hovering in the lower 70s, we retired to the boat for dinner and a good night s sleep before heading offshore early the next morning for Masonboro Inlet some 70 miles away. The forecast was for the winds to go to the SW in the evening and increase to 20 knots before switching to the NW and dropping to 12 knots. When the southwesterly kicked in, the winds were stronger than predicted with some gusts topping 30 knots. I was awakened by a thump and when I went topside, the inflatable dinghy had actually blown off the bow but luckily I had it tied on. The next morning saw winds that had gone west and decreased to 20 knots, but the prognosticated NW winds had been pushed back to late morning. We went ahead and headed out since we were going to be just shy of being able to lay the inlet with W winds. Leaving the bight, the waves were running 8-10 feet with some swells easily topping 12 feet. We slammed into the waves until the wind finally started freeing up by 11:00 and by 1:00 they had gone all the way around to the NE, making for a nice broad reach with 20 knots of wind in a still confused seaway. By 2:00 the seas settled in and we had a beautiful sail the rest of the way to Masonboro Inlet, arriving at 6:00. We stayed at a friend s dock that night with a planned early departure Tuesday morning. Sailing at 110 degrees, 18 knots of wind and 7.5 knots of boat speed.

Tuesday dawned bright and a bit chilly with temperatures in the low 50s, but with light winds and a tide that was going to be working with us we were going to try to make it as far as we could that day. This section of the ICW takes you behind Carolina Beach, through Snows Cut and down the Cape Fear River to Southport. We were hitting 10.5 knots over ground with no wind but abundant sunshine. The one worry I had on this section of the waterway is I had been warned that there was often shoaling at Lockwood s Ferry Inlet, but we never saw less than 9 feet of water going through there. Next was the passage behind Myrtle and North Myrtle Beach. There were numerous signs warning of rocks on the sides of the channels, and you could see large outcroppings of rock under the water s surface so being vigilant was a must. We passed through one section of North Myrtle we affectionately call Tackytown. There were monstrous stucco houses with lots of curves and tile roofs; we figure the builder s son-in-law was a tile salesman because even the bridge over the waterway had nice roof tiles. They were certainly ostentatious structures on the side of the ICW. Just past this bridge we passed John Jackson on Aquila, a local New Bern sailor heading back from a trip down to Florida who warned us of shallow water behind Isle of Palms. We finally cleared out of the canal behind Myrtle Beach and entered the Waccamaw River, what a difference a few miles can make! We anchored in a small bay off the river and it was reminiscent of the images from Heart of Darkness. This part of the waterway is easily the prettiest section of the ICW I have been on, with beautiful cypress trees growing to the water s edge for about 5 hours, punctuated occasionally by a small houseboat or restaurant. At one point we passed a house that was obviously grilling burgers and it was hard not to stop and ask for one they smelled so good. Page 7 As we approached Georgetown the river got quite wide and the tide was flooding with us, which was nice. We passed Georgetown, SC around 11:00 and decided to push on to Charleston. After Georgetown, the waterway gets a bit on the shallow side and the channel is very narrow. As we were crossing the Santee River at low tide, the water at times was down close to 6 feet that is the get out and push depth for our boat. It was here we saw our second alligator and a pod of dolphins that played around the boat for quite some time. Sarah was even able to get a shot of one out of the water. The transit behind Isle of Palms was luckily free of any bumps on the bottom as we passed through at high tide. The last bridge before Charleston is a bascule bridge that opens on the hour, we were lucky enough to not even have to slow the engine to get through on the 6:00 opening and were at the docks in Charleston by 7:00.

Page 8 The next day we moved BEG to her slip for the duration of our stay in Charleston. We were trying to get to the closest grocery store and decided it would be easiest to motor across the Cooper River and walk to the Harris Teeter in downtown Charleston. About ¾ the way across, the motor died. I tries pulling the cord to restart it, but it appeared the motor was locked up so we started rowing back the way we came. Soon after we started rowing, a boat came up and offered us a tow over to the marina. The boat was perfectly named Problem Solved. After that we decided to take the free shuttle into town and resupply the boat. Thursday evening, we got a call from Jennifer s sister telling us that our dog Foxy had escaped from her brother s back yard on Sunday and was still on the lam. They had put up fliers and posted her description on several websites and they had received several reports that Foxy had been sighted around Pullen Park and Cameron Village almost 4 miles away along very busy roads. We packed up the next morning, got a rental car and headed back to Raleigh. As soon as we turned the car in, we grabbed our bikes and started looking for her. We looked and called all around the area for almost four hours when someone at Pullen Park called to say they had just seen Foxy, so we took off over there and met the lady who had called. She said she had tried to follow her but she disappeared over next to NC State. We took off over toward the last sighting and split up, and within about five minutes Jennifer came across Foxy on the bridge at NC State on Pullen Rd. She was one happy dog to see us and Sarah was one happy kid to have her dog back! This was Jennifer s 50 th birthday, and she said it was absolutely the best present she could ever hope for. Part 2 - Racing in Charleston We carefully watched the long range forecast for Charleston, and it was looking good with knots of breeze, sunny skies and mild temperatures. I really don t know why I look at those things. Turns out the weather was stormy, overcast and cool. We rented a house on Sullivan s Island and moved the boat to Toller s Cove for the duration of the race. The Charleston City Marina where race headquarters were located can be quite chaotic during race week with over 200 boats heading out to race, half of them without motors, and the current ripping through. There was the additional benefit of not having to haul your stuff half a mile to the boat. Saturday was forecast to have winds in the 5 knot range, but luckily they got that wrong and with winds ranging from knots it was a great day for racing. We kept the #1 up as we never felt too overpowered during the race. Waves were in the 3-5 foot range and fairly steep, so driving the waves was important and a skill I don t get to practice very often. The drive out to the race course is quite long, but there were some really interesting boats to watch including two Transpac 52s and Shockwave, a 72 foot mini-maxi and the new Farr 400s.

This was really the first race we had done with the new boat, and we had some new boat issues. The most significant was the cover on the jib halyard. An extra cover was stitched onto the halyard to keep it from slipping in the rope clutch, and it chose to let go right after the start of the first race and slipped down a couple of feet. We got the halyard back up and were off racing. The real problem came at the first weather mark when the extra cover jammed the halyard and would not let it come down making a jibe all but impossible. While messing with that, another boat jibed over to port and started coming toward us. I called starboard and the driver was a bit confused and accidentally jibed, knocking one of their crew unconscious. The race committee took the stricken crew member off the boat and they continued to race without a spinnaker. I checked in after the race and he was shaken up but was OK. The second day of racing had sunny skies, warmer temperatures and winds around 8 knots. We were getting the boat rolling better and were leading from start till the last windward mark, where some rigging issues and trimming issues gave up a 10 boat length lead turn into a 30 second loss for second place. The final day of racing, was cold, wet and very light air. The wind had blown out of the SW until early Sunday morning when it turned to the NE. The waves were running every bit of 5 feet in the exact opposite direction of a 6-0 knot breeze. We would surf down the waves going upwind and slam into them going downwind, which made for some very challenging sailing. During the last race the wind all but shut down and the rain started in earnest as evidenced by the look of pure joy on Tinka s face. Page 9 All in all, I felt we did pretty well considering the competition in Charleston. Two of the boats in our class had won Charleston Race Week and the Beneteau 10R was crewed by the factory team. We finished 7 out of 12 boats, but well ahead of Echo, the 36.7 I changed keels with. I did a little analysis on the results, and we lost 10 positions in various races by less than 30 seconds, and in 5 of those races it was less than 10 seconds, so we could have realistically moved up to 4 th if we would have had a bit more time on the boat. Watch out racers, this boat appears to be quicker than my old 36.7! Crew for the race were Blackbeard s members Bill, Cora and Tinka Talbert, Brian Sears, Larry Learn, Doug Longhini, John The Consultant Pitcavage and CL Brock with Ruben Diaz from Havelock rounding out the crew prior to moving to China Lake to do secret weapons research. We tried to explain to him that there was no lake and as such sailing would not be an option, but he decided to go anyway. The boat returned to Blackbeard s on the Tuesday following the race, and the crew of Doug, John and Larry had quite the ride back with strong winds on the aft quarter except for a brief period of 60 knots of breeze in a storm, but I ll let the guys tell you that story. Dock to dock from Charleston to Blackbeard s was 36 hours in the words of our good friend Ed Doughty, what a ride.

Page 10 ETYSA WRAPS UP SPRING SESSION By Alan Hills The Edward Teach Youth Sailing Association (ETYSA) has just wrapped up our spring Saturday sailing sessions. We averaged 8 plus kids per session and welcomed some new blood to the fold. Our next activity will be a weeklong session to be held June 11 th through 15 th. In order to properly manage the event we have capped the enrollment to 20 youth so be sure to notify Clare Brock or Tinka Talbert if you have a child/grandchild/other youth that would like to participate. Some of you may have noticed a new structure being built next to the bathhouse. This will be the storage shed for ETYSA, which Arch Altman picked up for us for half price (yea!). We are currently using the rope shed and are looking forward to having our own new home to store our rigging. Clare reports that we have received $500 in donations at the Cinco de Mayo regatta recently which will help us maintain and upgrade or equipment this year; thanks to Clare and all who participated in aiding us with our mission. We have added a land trainer to our fleet this year which we will be using for the landside portion of our classes. We feel this will be a valuable instruction tool for the novices by allowing them to learn how the boat will react without actually being out on the water. In closing, if you would like to volunteer to help us during the June session to contact Clare or Tinka. You don t have to be a crack sailor or a teacher to help out, just interested in seeing that our beloved sport passes on to the next generation. Also, if there are any of you that would like to help with the shed, we can use you. Contact Alan Hills ( ). Lastly, I have to say that this whole endeavor isn t the same without the Bornarth family around. We miss all they brought to this group and will strive to move forward what they helped start. Thanks Dan and Holly and good luck to you! ETYSA NEEDS We have heard some members ask, What does ETYSA need? In the article on the left by Alan Hills there is a plea for help with the sessions and building the storage shed. But beyond that we have some physical needs. We are attempting to keep the cost of the sessions low so that we can get more participants. Would you be willing to donate or provide funds for the following: SPRING SESSION (photo by Alan Hills) Hand held VHF radios (3) for the safety boats to be able to communicate A rig for one Opti (mast, boom, sail and sprit) we have the boat ready to go Singlets (pennies) cost $25 each and prevent strips on life jackets from catching on rigging. one needed for each youth. ETYSA burgee stickers and flags. Contact Doug Longhini or Arch Altman if you can contribute or are willing to purchase. We also we have a San Juan 21 that was donated which is for sale. Currently it can be seen in dry storage at the club. If interested, contact Alan Hills at
