I look forward to the coming year, knowing that there will be some bumpy waves along the way, but I am confident that we can sail safely through them. I dislike rules, but they are necessary to allow your club to run smoothly. Really, if we all just remember the Golden Rule, life will be pleasant. This brings me to some new rules that are being put in place about the controlling of dogs on BSC property. We now have a Dog Committee, chaired by Larry Sorenson, and they have come up with a comprehensive list of items regarding dogs at BSC. [See Pages 2 and 3 of this Epitaph for more information.] Dog incidents have been a nagging problem at BSC for a long time, and will be addressed using the guidelines developed by the Dog Committee. Please read them and note the changes. More areas are now off-limits to dogs and only dogs belonging to members are allowed on the property. Self help is an important part of our culture at BSC, and we recently had another fine example: our ancient bathhouse heating system quit just as the cold weather hit. A group quickly got together, rigged a temporary fix, and then found the parts for a permanent fix. I know that Arnold Giles, Bill Braun, Ron Helms and Jimmy Sellers were involved and there may be others I have missed. A new website is in place, built by Nick Karasek. Our old website was good, but the new one is on steroids. Be sure to check it out, and make it a habit to use it. It is a great way to keep up with what is going on. A quick count finds a total of 16 boats for sale right now at BSC! Some of these members will buy other boats, but a number will swallow the anchor. We have just 194 members at present and may fall farther behind in the spring. Everyone needs to be a recruiter to help us bring our club back to full strength. Contact Ken Caviston for new member information. ALL THE NEWS THAT S IN THE WINDS (252) There was a massive fire recently at McCotters Marina on the Pamlico River. The cause was a short where the power cord plugged into a boat. Please check your boat for problem areas and remember the club rule banning the use of heaters when the owner is not present. Your new board has met for the first time and is off to a great start. We are lucky to have members willing to give their time and talents and to be part of this team. At the February 11 th meeting, they will begin the process of determining where to spend your money this year. They will also begin to put some procedures in place to deal with abandoned stuff. We have stuff (dinghies, poles, forestays, canvas, etc.) scattered throughout the property, some of which is not identified. The other big issue is boats that are abandoned (stored and never used). One of these sank recently in its slip, a pointed reminder that some type of control is needed. Huddle time and date: 5:00 pm on Feb. 6th in the clubhouse. Come out and cheer for your favorite football team and eat spicy chili with other Blackbeard members on Super Bowl Sunday afternoon. The party starts around 5:00 pm in the club house and ends when the best team wins. Joe Draper and David Pfefferkorn are making a big pot of spicy chili for everyone attending and would like others to BYOB and bring a favorite appetizer to share. Please RSVP by to give us an estimate of how many will be attending - we need to know how much Spicy Chili to cook! Don't forget the first annual Blackbeard's Super Bowl Party! 2 Page 2 BSC Dog Committee Report I volunteered to chair the Dog Committee because I saw an unhappy future at BSC for families with dogs and maybe no dogs at all. BSC pet policies had been ignored too long and the Board formed a small but balanced committee to look at the Club s needs. With the Board s passing of the BSC Pet Policy on January 7 th, 2011 we have a fresh start. It will take an effort by all members to make this work. For starters, we need a larger committee to help with implementation particularly the construction of needed improvements to our facilities. At present we have $200 in the treasury that is earmarked for these improvements and that came from the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) obedience class. However, we may need more and I am willing to teach another CGC obedience class this spring. I understand the canine-human bond, but I also see the needs of all BSC members. I have personally witnessed encounters with dogs that had a negative impact on the total BSC family. Hopefully the slate is wiped clean and we can begin a time during which our pets are a welcome part of the BSC Family. Rules and regulations can never replace common courtesy or being responsible: do it because it s the right thing to do. I will provide a monthly pet tip for the Epitaph, and we are working on adding a new Pets Group to the website that will provide relevant information and educational tips. This can also be used to post pictures of your pets and to share pet-related ideas with other members. Pet Tip for January All Flexi leads have locks that allow you to shorten the lead to a length that is suitable to the current situation. If you are in a close or congested area you should shorten the leash down 2 or 3 feet for the comfort of other members. This is the safe, courteous, and responsible thing to do. Please consider this whenever you and your pet are on the docks or under the clubhouse. Flexi leads are wonderful tools if used correctly learn how the lock works and use it. Here is the new BSC Pet Policy. If you have questions please call me at BSC Pet Policy Well-behaved dogs and responsible owners are welcome partners in the total BSC Family. Dog owners must ensure the best behavior of their family pets. The following is a quote from the BSC Mission statement: "The basic premise of BSC is, and always has been, to promote the sport of sailing. The involvement of the total family ensures that this will never change. Rules for Pets on BSC Property Rabies vaccines are required by the state of North Carolina and Craven County and must be complied with for all pets brought on BSC property. Dogs, cats or any other type of pets, are NOT allowed in the clubhouse, bathhouse, upper most deck or picnic shelter. All pets must be under control (on an appropriately sized leash) while on the BSC property. The person in physical control of the leash must have the ability and strength to handle and control the dog. If an owner elects to use a flexi-type leash they must be knowledgeable in the operation of the leash. While on the docks or in close quarters, the flexi leash must be locked to the shortest safe length. Dogs may not be tethered in a location which would impede or interfere with the movement of BSC members going to or from common and normally used BSC facilities open to members. NO tethering is allowed under the clubhouse, on the decks or on the docks. Tethering is defined as tying a pet to an object. Dogs may be tethered for a short period of time at authorized locations or put in approved pet containment areas. BSC dog-owning volunteers will provide the labor and funds to construct and maintain shortterm containment areas and tethering points. The cost of these improvements will be met through private donations. The equipment used and locations will be approved by BSC Board. The dog exercise area is located at the gate end of the center parking area among the three cypress trees. Pet owners are required to pick up pet waste and place it in the dumpster. All dog bites to people MUST be reported in accordance with NC State and Craven County laws and to the BSC Board if human skin is broken. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL. Dog bites must be reported to a Craven County Animal Control Officer. All incidents involving unacceptable dog behavior shall be reported to the Dog Committee or a Board member. Reports should be in writing and contain a brief description of what happened and be signed by a member. Minor infractions may be handled by the Dog Committee through education and training. Serious infractions will be referred to the Board for action. The Board will establish appropriate corrective action for incidents that are properly reported. A first serious offence will result in a warning. The warning will require the dog to successfully complete the AKC Canine Good Citizen program. The BSC Dog Committee will assist the owner in locating approved trainers/ evaluators. A list of approved evaluators and more information about the CGC Program may be obtained at A second serious reported offence may result in the dog being banned. If an owner allows a dog to become a nuisance, menacing, threatening, to lunge or to become a safety concern, any BSC member present has the responsibility to request that the dog be removed from that common use area. Only BSC members have the privilege of bringing pets on site. Board Action The Board approved the following statement to be added to the membership application: Will you be bringing a pet to BSC? Yes* No by Larry Sorenson *If yes, I will maintain rabies vaccines as required by the state of North Carolina and Craven County laws. I hereby certify my pet(s) has a current vaccination for rabies and will be kept current. Payment of annual dues will attest that the vaccinations are current. It is recommended the dog owner maintain the current rabies certificate on their boat at times when their pet is onboard. I will follow the rule outlined for pet behavior. Additionally, the Board approved the BSC Dog Committee being removed from the list of Special Committees and added to the list of Standing Committees. I would like to compile an list of all members that are interested in receiving BSC pet updates. I have some names and addresses, but not for all interested parties. To make sure you are on my list to receive information about pets at BSC, please me at llsoren@earthlink.net. Larry

3 2011 Social Events Start Off with a Bang! Please save February 6 th for Joe Draper and David Pfefferkorn s Super Bowl / Chili Party. If you plan to attend, let Joe know at josdrap15@yahoo.com. And on February 12 th, our BSC social will feature a Valentine theme. Wear red and be sweet that week! George Nauman On behalf of the Membership, BSC extends its condolences to member Christina Riley, on the sudden passing of her mother in Myrtle Beach on December 29 th. Please keep Christina in your thoughts during this difficult time. Page 3 suggests heavy loads on wiring due to the cold weather. In the Duck Creek fire a couple of years ago, the investigation concluded that an extension cord on an unattended electric heater was responsible. At BSC there have been reports of lower than normal voltage on C Dock during the past couple of weeks of extremely cold weather. Could this be a Front Gate Update Thanks to Arnold Giles, we have a new gate opener at BSC! As most of you are aware, we have a new gate opener assembly at our front gate. The old one was not only on its last legs; it was never designed to handle the load that we were asking of it. Thanks to time-consuming internet research, and after sorting through the dozens and dozens of openers available, Arnold was able to zero in on one model that met our requirements and would work with our existing gate assembly and controls. This saved BSC the expense of a new gate and opening controls including the keypad and card reader and the inside-the-gate push button and car sensor. (The car sensor will be wired in the near future.) This unit also has battery backup in case of power failure. After conferring with the manufacturer and the NC dealer, Arnold secured Board approval and ordered the new unit. We now have a gate opener of sufficient quality to handle our demanding needs. As a rather robust operator, this unit required a firm concrete foundation, with a footprint of roughly two feet by two feet and sunk two feet into the ground. Assembling a workday crew, Arnold fashioned a concrete form, dug the hole for the foundation, mixed and poured the concrete, installed the necessary conduits, carefully aligned the mounting bolts in the wet concrete that after curing, matched the mounting holes on the unit perfectly. All that was left was to figure out the wiring, mount and test the new unit and control arms, and remove the old unit. Step by step, it came into focus and is working smoothly today. The gate will stay open a full 40 seconds when entering or leaving. But never gamble with the gate. If it s open when you arrive, don t assume that it will remain open for you. Push the inside button or use your card on the outside to ensure another 40 seconds for safe passage through the gate. Be safe: push-a da button! Marina Fire A major fire at McCotters marina recently wreaked havoc on an old, established marina in Washington NC. Some 30 boats were lost and a number of people were injured escaping the inferno. The newscast films of the fire were quite frightening. While this tragic loss of boats occurred somewhere else, it is not something that we should take lightly. It could very well happen at any marina or facility including ours. It is imperative that we all take precautions to avoid the possibility of this type of disaster. News reports have suggested that the cause was electrical in nature. This result of electric heaters running en masse? I certainly hope not. It is not only very dangerous, but against club policy to leave unattended electric heaters on the dock. This has nothing to do with the cost of electricity, but rather with the safety of our docks and members boats. Please check your boat to make sure you have properly winterized for the cold weather. Electric heaters are not the answer! And make sure that if you are using an electric heater while on your boat, never use an extension cord of any kind. Plug the heater directly into an AC receptacle. Most extension cords tend to drop the voltage and can heat up to the point of melting. A boat fire on any dock will most likely burn the entire dock since burning fiberglass is nearly impossible to put out and a fire will spread quickly to nearby boats. Be Safe!! Take care of your boat and your fellow members.

4 Page 4 Race News Pre-Christmas Race No Present The Winter Series races on December 18 barely made it over the rules Real Feel limit of 35 degrees (if it really did), but a steady drizzle and sometimes regular rain made it pretty miserable. Fortunately, the wind was in the 8 to 10 range, so I suppose it could have been worse. We had one crewmember who thought maybe we had a little sleet. PRO Bill Jarvis ran a long first race and a very short second race (for spinnakers only), so we were back at the dock before 2 pm. On Compass Rose, we started with the #2, changed to the better #1, and flew the spinnaker. Three soaking wet sails below plus all the wet lines, a couple of leaks, and wet bodies made for the wettest the boat has ever been below. Even the wood bulkheads were sweating. Time for a dehumidifier. The first race was six legs for the four brave non-spin boats, and after an hour and a half, Longview beat Aquila by only 43 seconds. Together with BSC s Julie, the cumulative standings are very close, and throwouts will be critical. Non-spins elected not to attempt a second race. Smart call. For seven spinnakers, the start of race one had Compass Rose over early, pushed up by Afterthought. After restarting on port, we followed Charlie Nelson s Water Phantom up the right side of the course, which seemed to be lifted and in better air. It kept us in range of the faster boats at the windward mark. The first spinnaker sets all went well, but once the chutes got wet, launching and trimming became more sluggish. At the end, Afterthought continued her dominance correcting over us by 44 seconds and over Eddy Parker in Brown Eyed Girl by less than two minutes. Doug King in Blue Yonder was only 58 seconds behind Eddy. The second race was very short just windward and back to the RC. We got a good start that allowed a port crossing of the fleet. In the brief elapsed time, Afterthought won again and Compass Rose was second, with Eddy Parker third. Afterthought and BEG are very close in the series standings. The rest of us are racing for third! New Year s Resolution: No PHRF on January 8 th. After ricocheting all week above and below the 35 degree Real Feel forecast, the final call was below, so races were cancelled for the day. Next and final Winter Series race date is January 22. After two cold dates, we are sure to have warm sunny conditions. January, February and March Racing Events January 22 marks the end of the NYRA Winter Series. February has no events scheduled. The Commodores Ball Regatta has been pushed back a week. See below. March 5 is the NYRA Commodores Ball Regatta. This is a one-day regatta that hopefully will mark the first of the spring races rather than the last of the winter events. Contact Bill Jarvis at or bjarvis1@suddenlink.net. March 26 & 27 is the NYRA Invitational Regatta at the Bridgeton Harbor Marina. The past few years San Juans and Catalinas have raced close to the Jerry Rezab, left, and Ted Odell huddled up on Compass Rose. (Zahradka photo) marina, while PHRF boats have done a moderate distance race and/or at a course off Broad Creek. Contact Bill Jarvis. The 2011 Race Schedule put together by the Interclub Racing Committee (ICRC) is enclosed with this issue of the Epitaph. Please mark race dates you plan to do and let your crews know the schedule. 5 Fred Latham New Year s Day Regatta For the last 39 years, our own Fred Latham s San Juan 21 Regatta has hit the water for a sail on New Year s Day. Fred wasn t able to take out Mad Mama himself this year. Tim Poole & son Tim Jr. from Raleigh, had trailer trouble on the road. They came anyway and sailed Fred's Mad Momma. It was great to have Mad Momma back on the race course. Fred coached from the clubhouse deck and was on hand greeting everyone at lunch and presenting the trophies. All present enjoyed sharing in Fred's stories. We have no idea how Fred manages it, but with record cold & snow last week, and forecast record cold and snow the week after, he pulled out a near perfect day! Jeremy & Josh Leray collect first place in the Working Sails division. This year, eleven San Juan 21s and three cruising boats came out on a cold New Year s day to start the year off on the water at Blackbeard for this annual fun Regatta. With temperatures in the 30 s on New Year s Eve, it was forecast to be warm with the bright sun and light shifting winds in the creek. This fun Regatta proved to be one of the better ones, with everyone having a big time. After a hotdog and chili lunch cooked up by the team of Mike Harrison and Mike Bonner, during which 104 hotdogs and all the trimmings were consumed in the clubhouse, the fleet hit the water at about 1:00 PM. Temperatures were warming up to the forecast 65-degree range and with fresh winds, the day turned out just fine. The fleet consisted of four boats entered in the working sails class and seven in the spinnaker class. This was the first time in Ken s memory that more Spinnaker boats raced than nonspinnaker boats. Three races were pulled off by PRO Bill Jarvis, with close racing at each mark of the course in a southerly breeze of six to eight knots. Then it was back to the docks to pull out and award trophies. In the working sail class, new BSC members Jeremy, Mary Ann, and their son, junior sailor Josh Leray, along with crew Larry Learn won with two first place finishes and a second. Congratulations to them on their second event on their newly purchased San Juan 21 Two for Juan. Mike Bonner with Mike Harrison placed second. In the spinnaker class it was great to have Hans Lassen and Doug Longhini enter, even if under a great deal of peer pressure. With some very close mark roundings and finishes throughout the fleet, Dan Bornarth and crew Branin Thorn on Black Jack won the class with two first place and a second place finish. Mike Evans was second and Jeff Thomas third. Eddy Parker helps daughter Sarah take home the Stern Award. Page 5 Fred was awarded a plaque marking the 39 th New Year s sail by Mad Mama. Dan Bornarth and Branin Thorn take first in the Spinnaker Division. Last but not least, the Stern Award was presented to the skipper who observed the most sterns for the day. Skippering her father s boat in a very competitive field, the Stern Award goes to Sarah Parker! As usual, the racing was very close with mark roundings and finishes involving overlapped boats. The San Juan 21 class continues to prove itself in very competitive sailing on the Neuse River. One other note: mark your calendar as the San Juan 21 North American Championships are returning to the Neuse River sponsored by Local San Juan 21 Fleet Eight and Bridgeton Harbor. Sailing will be off Union Point between June 23 rd and 26 th. Members of Fleet 8 will be working hard to make sure the San Juan 21 North American championship trophies remain here locally for another year as they did in & Dan Bornarth (Editor s note: This article is a compilation of two articles submitted by and Dan Bornarth. A big thanks to both.) Photos by LuAnn Parins
